This volume is a continuation of a series Na boku (On the Side), which undertakes reflections on different ways of permeation of literary theory discourse with literary discourse in modern and postmodern Polish literature. In the following volume, the research area has been extended to the 19th century (represented by Henryk Sienkiewicz). The authors of these essays continue their search for writers’ statements about literature formulated beside strictly literary discourse (Zbigniew Herbert, Jacek Dukaj, and Henryk Sienkiewicz), but also subtly filtering into this discourse (Jan Zych, Stanisław Barańczak), or even engulfing it in its entirety (Joanna Bartoń, Piotr Goźliński, and Witold Gombrowicz). This volume also develops reflections initiated in the previous volume of this series concerning the literary output of career literary scholars, in which the theoretical language is being relocated from „on the side” to the center of literature (Zofia Mitosek). In the opening essay by Józef Olejniczak, a new understanding of the „on-the-sidedness” emerges, one which was absent from earlier volumes. It stems from the perception of change in the situation of theory-dominated literature. “Not longer than a few years ago, the standing of literature seemed to be unswerving. Today – if Olejniczak is to be believed – when theory rules, the position of literature is “on the side”. On the other hand, the works collected in this volume demonstrate that theoretical discourse still draws on literary discourse, albeit in the postmodern formation, it is the other way around – literary criticism discourse and literary theory discourse forerun literary texts” (from the editorial review by prof. dr hab. The author presents the problem of writing research articles in English as a foreign language by Polish scholars – specialists in linguistics and applied linguistics – for publication in Anglo-American journals.In her book she explores which aspects of the process are the most challenging for the authors and what needs they have in this area. In the light of the current higher education reform and the new requirement of publishing in international journals, this issue is particularly important.She presents the complex problem of the role of English as a global language in academic communication and the situation of scholars from Poland, a semiperiphery country, who by submitting papers to highly-ranked journals compete with the researchers from the world’s leading countries in this area. When faced with the new challenges, they need to have a highly developed competence of writing in line with the dominant Anglo-American conventions.The author describes the problem presented in the book from a geopolitical point of view and considers the process of writing in English form a social, cognitive and rhetorical perspective. She also explores in detail the core of the issue in an empirical study and tries to diagnose what steps should be undertaken in order to facilitate the publication activities of Polish scholars at the highest international level.

The monograph is devoted to alternative history and steampunk – two significant genres of fantasy literature which build novel worlds around the answer to the question “What would might happen if ...”. The author discusses the poetics of both mentioned literary genres, and also subjects them to a multifaceted cultural analysis. Alternative history and steampunk novels are closely related to history, constituting a significant but subversive medium of cultural memory – the reader will thus find in the book an overview of the relationship between historical counterfactualism and its literary variation in alternative history novels. The following chapters are devoted to the discussion emerging from the analyzed novels regarding as the shape of cultural and national memory, the alternative history of literature, the alternative history of religion, the vision of (in) existing cities and metropolises, and counterfactual autobiography. The variety of applied research approaches and interdisciplinary, comparative and analytical character of the publication is signaled by the “archipelago” formula used in the subtitle.

The presented work is based on the manuscript Rig pa ’dzin pa’i pho nya by Ngag dbang ’jig grags, the 16th century last ruler of Rin spungs in Central Tibet. The manuscript is very rare and interesting for Tibetan literature, not broadly known and studied by Tibetologists both outside and inside Tibet. Two main themes of the manuscript are discussed in detail in the book: the itinerary of Śambhala and the life of the author, Ngag dbang ’jig grags. The volume includes chronological presentation of the manuscript with a commentary: the life of the author, Ngag dbang ’jig grags (second part of the text) and the guide to Śambhala (first part of the text), as well as its complete English translation. In the appendices discussion on the literary aspects of the manuscript is presented, accompanied by different glossaries and the index.

The work discusses the notion of the basic phonological segment from the perspective of selected European and American phonological theories. The discussion consists in the analyses of specific phonological problems in accordance with the tenets of a given framework, starting with the Kazan School and ending with the Optimality Theory. The goal of this study is to show the differences in the methodology and predictions of each framework that prove significant in the process of establishing the basic phonological unit. The dissertation elaborates on the data from English, Polish, German, and Russian.

The didactics of the native language as a foreign language, which is the subject of the author's analysis, concerns the specific condition of teaching foreign languages, i.e. defining one's own language and not a previously learned one in relation to teachers and to the authors of textbooks or other similar studies. Our "being in such language", to use Heidegger's term, is a unique relationship and incomparable with the competences acquired within subsequent languages. In this situation the language taught and the cultural space defined through it are native to the teacher, because they have been acquired from the very beginning of consciousness, and not learned and recognized as a result of an artificial educational process.
