Najmłodsza leksyka polska i bułgarska

Author(s): Joanna Satoła-Staśkowiak / Language(s): Bulgarian,Polish

“Newest Lexis in Polish and Bulgarian” by Joanna Satoła-Staśkowiak addresses the problem – noted by linguists, Slavists, Bulgarists and translators alike – of a gap that has emerged in contrastive description of the newest Polish and Bulgarian lexical units. No scholarly work has thus far been devoted to a comprehensive comparative study of changes in the Polish and Bulgarian lexicons. Thousands of new meanings and hundreds of altogether new words have appeared in Poland and Bulgaria as a result of the countries’ development in terms of technology, information processing and communication as well as political‑systemic changes within the two states and the emergence of new democratic regimes after 1989. Linguists have claimed the current moment to be the most productive in lexicographical terms in the history of linguistics (cf., e.g., Miodek 2000, 2012; Kirova 2001, 2004; Kita 2007; Blagoeva 2013; Videnov 1997). This book provides numerous examples of how the political and civilizational transformations of the contemporary world are inextricably linked with exceptionally rapid linguistic change. The form of presenting linguistic phenomena within the monograph has been chosen in accordance with one of the book’s crucial goals – to render the subject matter accessible not only to professional Slavic linguists but also to more general audiences. The book touches on various aspects of Polish and Bulgarian lexical innovation and sets directions for subsequent research projects within the field. An additional advantage of the monograph is constituted by the fact that both the newest linguistic tendencies in Polish and Bulgarian and particular lexical units (neologisms) are set against other Slavic languages, including Czech, Russian, Slovak and Ukrainian. In terms of sources, the work draws on all available publications concerning the languages in question, including the monolingual and bilingual dictionaries (printed as well as electronic) which incorporate new lexical units reflective of the 21st-century mind-set. A contrastive method has been applied, which jointly describes the analysed units in a parallel manner. In elucidating particular questions concerning neologisation, the author employed her own knowledge and the linguistic competence she acquired in the course of long-term contrastive research conducted in Poland and Bulgaria; her work on printed and electronic Bulgarian-Polish dictionaries; the parallel corpora of both languages that she has been compiling; finally, her experiences of everyday life in both linguistic realities. The aim of this book has been to portray the living, and newest, Polish and Bulgarian languages as they appear in actual linguistic communication and to investigate the processes whereby these languages are enriched, modified, reduced or impoverished; the study is also concerned with the problem of translating neologisms. The novelty of the research presented herein lies in the fact that the topic it explores has not yet received attention within Slavic linguistics and that in analysing its material it adopts research tools that are new in semantics (e.g., parallel corpora, statistical tools applied to revealing cross-lingual parallels). Original and creative, this study proposes more precise tools to describe newest lexemes and their linguistic context.

Synonimia w polskiej terminologii medycznej drugiej połowy XIX wieku

Author(s): Lucyna Agnieszka Jankowiak / Language(s): Polish

The book is an attempt to describe synonymy in scientific medical terminology (names of diseases) at the end of the 19th century based on the material obtained from “The Dictionary of Polish Medical Terminology” (Polish: “Słownik terminologii lekarskiej polskiej”) from 1881 including a broad description of historical background and the conditions in which Polish medical terminology developed at that time. The characteristics of synonymy concerned primarily structural, semantic and genetic aspects. A secondary aim of the book was to present the material, i.e. 940 synonymic series presented as a Dictionary and Index. The Dictionary of Polish Medical Terminology from 1881 is a work of Polish physicians belonging to Cracow and Warsaw schools. They attempted to systematise Polish medical terminology (collect current terminology and supplement it due to a considerable development in the field of medicine). The primary conclusion from the analysis is that it was impossible to avoid synonymy in the terminology that was created consciously, which was largely influenced by non-linguistic, rather than linguistic, factors (e.g. the influence of synonymy in foreign medical terminologies, especially in Latin, or influence of one of the regions on the selection of a given term). What is more, the range of synonymy in this terminology is substantial (approximately 38%). Synonymy concerns all names of diseases (both those known for a long time and those discovered just before the dictionary was made in 1881). 94.5% of the synonymic series consist of native terms only. In general, 65.5% of the series consist of terms with similar, homogeneous structures e.g. two-word items, which are the most common (437 series). Moreover, the series are usually composed of words with the same stems (41.7%). The synonyms in mixed groups (in terms of structure) have various (with diverse level of complexity) relations with one another (i.e. they have the same or different stems). Furthermore, a part of the terminological synonyms (154) present polysemic relations.

Wizerunek felietonisty i sposoby jego werbalnego komunikowania

Author(s): Anna Barańska-Szmitko / Language(s): Polish

The purpose of the research presented in the book was to answer: what image effect can be achieved by what verbal actions? Rational constructivism theory of Michael Fleischer was applied in the study so the research procedure was intersubjective and the researcher’s influence on the results was minimized; it also verified the communicative effect and the intentions were not taken into account. The methods of social researches (experiment) were combined with the analysis of language content (discourse analysis). Over 500 students were reading columns - a genre that allows authors to freely express their personality and beliefs. Upon reading one of the four columnists’ texts, the respondents assigned image characteristics of the publicist, and later indicated those fragments which had constituted the basis for identifying the selected characteristics. The collected quotations were used as material for discourse analysis, which allowed to identify the means of communication specific to each image characteristic (language exponents). The analysis of answers allowed to define the image traits of a public figure, communicating on a verbal level, and also enabled to create a catalogue of exponents of these characteristics. This is the first catalogue of such type and the first one, which was created on the basis of empirical research with the participation of respondents.

Wpływ słowa i obrazu na wizerunek osoby publicznej

Author(s): Anna Barańska-Szmitko / Language(s): Polish

The research problem presented in this study concerns image communication on a verbal level and through non-textual influences. More specifically, the aim is to define what image is possible to communicate by means of words (verbal image), through pictures (visual image), and how non-textual knowledge and perception of the text author (public image) affect his/her verbal image. The theoretical and methodological basis was Michael Fleischer’s rational constructivism. The results of the research presented in the study relate to the image of four Polish publicists: Krzysztof Varga, Piotr Zaremba, Magdalena Środa and Szymon Hołownia. The experiment formula was used. Over half a thousand respondents read columns written by the aforementioned public figures, looked at photos or recalled associations with these names in order to define verbal, visual and public image. The selection of public figures examined in the study was deliberate - the columnists chosen for the research represent different attitudes and write about different subjects. The analysis allows to determine the characteristics of particular types of images (verbal, visual, public) and how they affect one another.

Етническата памет в топонимите на Артануджи (историческа Грузия)

Author(s): Inga Ghutidze / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 4/2023

Artanuji, the oldest city of Klarjeti, historical Georgia, is within the boundaries of Turkey on the grounds of Kars Treaty (1921). According to the data, gathered through the fieldwork in 2010‒2014, ethnic Georgians were exiled from Artanuji after the World War II. The article deals with the written sources and field data, providing detailed information about the Artanuji population, ethnic Christian Georgians as well as Muslim Georgians. The historical past in this region reminds of itself through the toponyms that appeared in the places of historical Georgia and through the speech of population and covers the history of the ethnic groups. The toponyms attested on the territory of historical Georgia have a great importance for they shed light on a certain period of history and are the only witnesses of Georgian settlement here.

Св. Георги в грузински културен контекст

Author(s): Nino Abakelia / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 4/2023

The article briefly evaluates the vast literature relating to the worship of St. George in Georgia and draws on the ethnographic data collected by the author in the years 1977 to 1987. It explores the worship of St George in the Caucasus Georgia both in the past and present. Consequently, it discusses such categories as religious practice, belonging to the parish and territory, identity and, sharing holy places, epithets of the Saint, hybrid cults, etc. The materials used are: written historical sources, ethnographic data attested in the writings of Christian Missionaries (Christopher Castelli, Jean Chardin, Arcangelo Lamberti, etc.), the ethnographic data gathered (during 2018-19) among Internally displaced persons, and contemporary emic and etic researches undertaken by anthropologists of the 20th and 21st centuries. The argument of the present contribution is based upon a series of ethnographic observances that present traditional feasts of the saint and their transformations in the light of current political processes. Accordingly, detailed ethnographic field data and observations are contextualized in time and space, using the explorations and studies of anthropologists and historians. The article tries to show how once traditional Christian site (lieux de mémoire in Pierre Nora’s sense) with its real environment and with is firm identity is deterritorialized and transformed into a shared place of mixed and ambiguous pilgrimage place through the political processes and hybridization.
