Putative Dopamine Agonist (KB220Z) Attenuates Lucid Nightmares in PTSD Patients: Role of Enhanced Brain Reward Functional Connectivity and Homeostasis Redeeming Joy

Putative Dopamine Agonist (KB220Z) Attenuates Lucid Nightmares in PTSD Patients: Role of Enhanced Brain Reward Functional Connectivity and Homeostasis Redeeming Joy

Author(s): Becky McLaughlin,Thomas Mclaughlin,Kenneth Blum,Marlene Oscar-Berman,Marcelo Febo,Gozde Agan,James L. Fratantonio,Thomas Simpatico,Mark S. Gold / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2015

Lucid dreams are frequently pleasant and training techniques have been developed to teach dreamers to induce them. In addition, the induction of lucid dreams has also been used as a way to ameliorate nightmares. On the other hand, lucid dreams may be associated with psychiatric conditions, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Reward Deficiency Syndrome-associated diagnoses. In the latter conditions, lucid dreams can assume an unpleasant and frequently terrifying character. Case presentations: We present two cases of dramatic alleviation of terrifying lucid dreams in patients with PTSD. In the first case study, a 51-year-old, obese woman, diagnosed with PTSD and depression, had attempted suicide and experienced terrifying lucid nightmares linked to sexual/physical abuse from early childhood by family members including her alcoholic father. Her vivid “bad dreams” remained refractory in spite of 6 months of treatment with Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and standard pharmaceutical agents which included prazosin, clonidie and Adderall. The second 39-year-old PTSD woman patient had also suffered from lucid nightmares. Results: The medication visit notes reveal changes in the frequency, intensity and nature of these dreams after the complex putative dopamine agonist KB220Z was added to the first patient’s regimen. The patient reported her first experience of an extended period of happy dreams. The second PTSD patient, who had suffered from lucid nightmares, was administered KB220Z to attenuate methadone withdrawal symptoms and incidentally reported dreams full of happiness and laughter. Conclusions: These cases are discussed with reference to the known effects of KB220Z including enhanced dopamine homeostasis and functional connectivity of brain reward circuitry in rodents and humans. Their understanding awaits intensive investigation involving large-population, double-blinded studies.

Hatching the behavioral addiction egg: Reward Deficiency Solution System (RDSS)™ as a function of dopaminergic neurogenetics and brain functional connectivity linking all addictions under a common rubric

Hatching the behavioral addiction egg: Reward Deficiency Solution System (RDSS)™ as a function of dopaminergic neurogenetics and brain functional connectivity linking all addictions under a common rubric

Author(s): Kenneth Blum,Marcelo Febo,Thomas Mclaughlin,Frans J. Cronjé,David Han,Mark S. Gold / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2014

Following the first association between the dopamine D2 receptor gene polymorphism and severe alcoholism, there has been an explosion of research reports in the psychiatric and behavioral addiction literature and neurogenetics. With this increased knowledge, the field has been rife with controversy. Moreover, with the advent of Whole Genome-Wide Studies (GWAS) and Whole Exome Sequencing (WES), along with Functional Genome Convergence, the multiple-candidate gene approach still has merit and is considered by many as the most prudent approach. However, it is the combination of these two approaches that will ultimately define real, genetic allelic relationships, in terms of both risk and etiology. Since 1996, our laboratory has coined the umbrella term Reward Deficiency Syndrome (RDS) to explain the common neurochemical and genetic mechanisms involved with both substance and non-substance, addictive behaviors. Methods: This is a selective review of peer-reviewed papers primary listed in Pubmed and Medline. Results: A review of the available evidence indicates the importance of dopaminergic pathways and resting-state, functional connectivity of brain reward circuits. Discussion: Importantly, the proposal is that the real phenotype is RDS and impairments in the brain’s reward cascade, either genetically or environmentally (epigenetically) induced, influence both substance and non-substance, addictive behaviors. Understanding shared common mechanisms will ultimately lead to better diagnosis, treatment and prevention of relapse. While, at this juncture, we cannot as yet state that we have “hatched the behavioral addiction egg”, we are beginning to ask the correct questions and through an intense global effort will hopefully find a way of “redeeming joy” and permitting homo sapiens live a life, free of addiction and pain.

Intellectual Disability, Brain Damage, and Group-to-Individual Inferences: How the U.S. Court System Uses Neuroscience Data

Intellectual Disability, Brain Damage, and Group-to-Individual Inferences: How the U.S. Court System Uses Neuroscience Data

Author(s): Valerie Gray Hardcastle / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2018

In this essay, I home in on the difficulties with group-to-individual (G2i) inferences in neuroscience and how they impact the legal system. I briefly outline how cognitive shortcutting can distort legal decisions, and then turn my attention to G2i inferences, with a special focus on issues of intellectual disability and brain damage. I argue that judges and juries are not situated to appreciate the nuances in brain data and that they are required to make clinical decisions without clinical training. As a result, they effectively ignore those responsibilities and simply decide cases in virtue of what they already believe to be true. How judges actually make decisions in high-stakes criminal cases is troubling, but they are also hamstrung in a variety of ways.

Стигматизација на лица болни од шизофренија и на зависници од дрога и алкохол

Author(s): Mihajlo Popovski / Language(s): Macedonian Issue: 3/2009

The stigma of mental illness is common in the general population, including students. This paper presents results from a study on the features of stigma among students towards people with different mental health disorders, i.e. schizophrenia, drug addiction and alcohol addiction. The results show that students generally stigmatize addiction more severely than schizophrenia. They tend to attribute higher personal responsibility and blame the addiction, as a result of which they express increased anger and fear of addicts, as well as avoidant behaviour towards them. In contrast, students tend to attribute less personal responsibility and controllability to schizophrenia, thus feeling increased pity for people suffering from this disorder, although at the same time they believe that segregation and coercion are most appropriate for them. The study also found two opposing tendencies among students: a concurrent preparedness for helping behaviour as well as a tendency towards discriminatory behaviour against people with different mental health disorders.

Author(s): Małgorzata Ganc,Rafał Milner,Wiesław Wiktor Jędrzejczak,Henryk Skarżyński / Language(s): Polish Issue: 29/2017

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder – ADHD is a syndrome characterized by attention deficits, hyperactivity and impulsivity co-morbid often with central auditory processing dysfunctions. In children it causes then different learning difficulties, socioemotional problems in school and home environment. Currently, the EEG Biofeedback is one of the few empirically proven methods employed for years in the ADHD treatment. This paper present a case study of 9-year-old boy with ADHD co-morbid with central auditory processing deficits, who was treated with EEG Biofeedback. The effectiveness of therapy was evaluated by medical history, parent’s observations included in special questionnaires and behavioral tests examining cognitive and higher auditory functions. The impact of therapy on the child’s brain bioelectric activity (EEG) was also tested. The results of study showed normalization of brain activity after therapy which accompanied both better child’s cognitive and auditory functioning. After EEG Biofeedback trainings the emotional as well as the behavioral state had also improved, which in turn had a positive effect on the social relationships of the child in school and at home. To summarize it could be said that EEG Biofeedback training can be an effective therapeutic method for children with ADHD.

Maņu hierarhija. Smaržas un oža

Maņu hierarhija. Smaržas un oža

Author(s): Sandris Mūriņš / Language(s): Latvian Issue: 1/2008

There is a hierarchy of the senses, where the vision and hearing dominate, and smell is neglected. Language can be transcribed both visually and phonetically, however it cannot possess the aspect of smell. Similarly one can find many synonyms for "see" and "hear" but the amount for "smell" is more restricted. Additionally, there are social categories for persons with visual and hearing disabilities, but there is no social category for those who have difficulties with their sense of smell. In order to understand why smell is the neglected sense, the establishment of the hierarchy of the senses is analysed through Jacques Lacan's model of development of the psyche. It is argued that the exclusion of smell originates in the phases of development of the imaginary and symbolic psyche, where logic prevails to develop a strong connection of the senses, "to see", "to hear", and "to say", with the human psyche. By applying the Lacanian theory of the four discourses: the Master, the University, the Hysteric and the Analyst, the question of how perfume fits into a culture dominated by images and words is addressed. It is concluded that perfume, in a spontaneous fashion, strives to break down cultural bonds between images and words.

ISCJELJUJUĆI KONTAKT SRCA

ISCJELJUJUĆI KONTAKT SRCA

Author(s): Sabina Alispahić,Enedina Hasanbegović-Anić,Đenita Tuce / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 1/2019

In Gestalt therapy, good psychological health implies good contact with oneself and with others. Contact, with awareness and experiment, is one of the basic terms in gestalt therapy. It is defined as a relationship between oneself and the other (the environment or internal aspects such as alienated parts of self, blocked emotions, thoughts, memories, or anything that is not integrated into a person, and is not perceived as “I” but as “the other”). To be able to contact others and their hearts, we must first be aware of our heart – its condition, needs, and desires. We usually become aware of our heart when some negative emotion arises or when its rhythm changes, which is characteristic of the broken heart syndrome. This condition manifests with abnormal chest pain and / or lack of air, preceded by strong emotional stress that is most often associated with anxiety and / or panic attack. The paper describes the process of development of the broken heart syndrome, as well as possibilities of treatment. Finally, we can conclude that the broken heart syndrome is a paradox: it is an expression of vitality but also a defense against vitality; the manifestation is a “problem” but also a means of solving it. The primary purpose of suffering and negative experiences is healing: suffering can be a tool that helps us become complete. True healing always implies the spread of the heart and the expansion of consciousness. Ultimately, every successful healing of the broken heart will result in an emotional-spiritual growth and development.

Does handedness matter? Writing and tracing kinematic analysis in healthy adults

Does handedness matter? Writing and tracing kinematic analysis in healthy adults

Author(s): Nikola Ivančević,Marija Novičić,Vera Miler-Jerković,Milica Janković,Dejan Stevanović,Blažo Nikolić,Mirjana B. Popović,Jasna Jančić / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2019

Writing is a complex skill and it can be affected by many factors. One of the most obvious is handedness. The actual influence of handedness (especially left-handedness, since almost 10% of the population is left-handed) onto writing performance has not been fully studied in previous research. Digitalized kinematic analyses and assessments of writing strategies (i.e., graphic rules and principles) are two approaches to investigating writing characteristics poorly addressed in previous research. The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of handedness onto writing kinematics using the aforementioned approach. The study included 34 young healthy adults (of whom 11 were left-handed) performing three writing tasks on a digital board. The tasks included semicircle and figure tracing and cursive letter writing. Regarding kinematics, left-handers performed tracing movements with higher mean horizontal acceleration and lower mean horizontal jerk compared to right-handed subjects. In addition, the left-handed wrote less accurately (i.e., undershooting more writing borders) and made more pauses during the letter writing task. The obtained results suggest that handedness slightly affects writing performance, and since left- and right-handers use the same cognitive strategies to writing and tracing, the observed differences could be mainly due to biomechanical constraints, what needs further studies in more representative samples.

Zaburzenia sprawności językowych i komunikacyjnych u chorych po udarze prawej półkuli mózgu. Opisy przypadków

Author(s): Aneta Syta / Language(s): Polish Issue: 02/2020

Right hemisphere brain damage manifests itself in the language at the level of not only expression but also reception. Utterances of people with right hemisphere dysfunctions are often disorderly and illogical. As recipients, patients with right hemisphere brain damage, for instance, interrupt their interlocutor’s utterance, cannot understand jokes, mockeries, or ambiguous messages. The paper describes language and communication deficits arising from right hemisphere brain damage and cases of patients suffering from right hemisphere disorder. The data obtained in the course of examining people with right hemisphere damage show that the most disturbed aspects of language include: lexical and semantic processing, processing complex language information, discourse, and prosody.

The Parental Alienation Construct A Qualitative Analysis Of The Specialty Literature

Author(s): Alina Sîrbu,Loredana Marcela Trancă,Roxana Toma,Otilia Ioana Tudorel / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2020

Parental alienation (PA) is a phenomenon being identified more and more in the specialty literature dealing with the type of relationships established between the child and the parents, post-divorce or separation. It was considered to be introduced into the DSM V under the form of Parental Alienation Disorder (PAD), a newer form of what was initially called the Parental Alienation Syndrome (PAS). The purpose of this study was a survey of the works that dealt with the concept of parental alienation (PA), for identifying the way in which it is defined and recognized in the specialty literature, for a clearer definition of the parental alienation phenomenon. An initial number of 447 studies was selected, and after applying the eligibility criteria, 120 studies remained. From the point of view of the content, 85 studies were identified in reference to the conceptual delimitations of the parental alienation (PA) term, 17 studies referring to arguments pro/against the introduction of the concepts defining parental alienation (PA) in the clinical scope, and 18 studies referring to the method of assessment of parental alienation (PA). In relation to the methodology used, 20 quantitative studies, 12 qualitative studies, 2 mixed studies (quantitative and qualitative) and 86 articles on theoretical aspects concerning parental alienation were identified. The conclusions of this research shows, reviewing the scientific literature, the existence of some controversies regarding the use of Parental Alienation (PA) and Parental Alienation Syndrome (PAS). However, it is seen that the most authors prefer to use the phrase Parental Alienation (PA) instead of Parental Alienation Syndrome (PAS), because it is considered that this phrase describe better the affection of child-parent relationship after divorce. There are few empirical studies sustaining the validity of these concepts, a considerable gap thus forming on this segment. It is noted that a higher number of quantitative studies is needed to allow a clearer definition of the concept of parental alienation (PA) backed by empirical data.

COMBINED THERAPY FOR PATIENTS AFTER ISCHEMIC STROKE FROM THE POINT VIEW OF COMPREHENSIVE REHABILITATION

COMBINED THERAPY FOR PATIENTS AFTER ISCHEMIC STROKE FROM THE POINT VIEW OF COMPREHENSIVE REHABILITATION

Author(s): Michal Vostrý,Ladislav Zilcher / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2020

Aim. The main objective of the research was to find out the efficacy of the combined therapy suitable for patients after ischemic stroke (promoting social adaptability). The therapy itself is then focused on robotic, psychomotor and cognitive therapy. Methods. 58 probands diagnosed with a stroke participated on the research (ischemic type I60-I69; ICD-10: International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems), out of which 49 were male patients ages between 50-55 and women between the age of 52–57. The data collection was finished in 2017-2018. Indicators were evaluated and tested firstly after the initiation of the combined therapy, then after 15 weeks of intensive therapy, which took place 4 times a week 50 minutes for each patient participating in the research. Results. A statistically significant difference was recorded among all observed indicator areas (somatic, psychological, social and even cognitive), in which patients scored during the final testing significantly better results, than during the initial testing. Conclusion. The results of the research point to the fact, that combined therapy of robotic, psychomotor and cognitive can have positive effect, and is suitable as a treatment for patients after ischemic stroke, regarding their productive age. Positive results have been therefore overt among all tested areas.

O PERSPECTIVĂ PSIHOLOGICĂ ASUPRA VULNERABILITĂȚII UMANE–CONSIDERAȚII TEORETICE ȘI DOVEZI EMPIRICE

Author(s): Maria-Elena Osiceanu / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 1/2020

The purpose of this article is to provide a psychological perspective on the state of vulnerability, presented as an inherent characteristic of the human condition. Terminology benchmarks are set at the beginning, highlighting the transdisciplinarity of the concept and identifying the main sources and categories of vulnerability. Then, the vulnerability, the pain, and the suffering are analyzed in various fields of psychology (clinical psychology, social psychology, psychoanalysis). The end of the article is a pleading for vulnerability, articulated around three myths, each of them being an argument in favor of the need of vulnerability in the human existence.

Jezik boli – između epistemološke asimetrije i biološki zadane društvenosti

Author(s): Cecilija Jurčić Katunar / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 03/159/2020

Since pain, as a phenomenon, is accessible only to the person who experiences it (which represents an obstacle to the objective categorization in the linguistic medium), when patients want to make it available to their interlocutors, they describe it with very detailed and elaborate metaphorical scenarios, most often those relating to a form of body damage. Using such embodied metonymic and metaphorical definitions, they provide an adequate imaginative simulation of their subjective experience for their recipients. The paper presents an overview of philosophical insights on the phenomenology of pain as well as a review of contemporary neuroscience research on a social dimension of pain, but also the results of cognitive linguistic analysis of pain vocabulary based on descriptors from the McGill Questionnaire as well as on the corpus of authentic doctor-patient dialogues.

Terapijsko jahanje i rehabilitacijske znanosti

Author(s): Zora Itković,Sofija Boras / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 1/2003

This article presents a relatively new therapeutic method in Croatia. This method assures efficient and stimulant therapy for persons with disabilities, and persons with difficulties in social and emotional adaptation - the method of therapeutic horseback riding. Comparing resources in the world and in Croatia, the authors give a clear preview of the development of therapeutic horseback riding and present the place this method takes among rehabilitation sciences. The authors explain terms such as hypo-therapy, medical riding, sport riding, and voltigeuring are explained. The article particularly focuses on indications and contraindications for therapeutic riding, as a starting point for any specific action. The authors openly show their own interest in the use of this method in Croatia in the section named "The horse as a teacher and as a prime mover of emotional and social intelligence development in children". In the end, the article gives an overview of volunteer work as one of the strongest pillars of this program - which entails horseback riding with persons with special needs. In the article the authors especially concentrate on clarifying this important therapeutic method, but also encourage the readers to join one of the many activities that therapeutic riding offers.

Relationship between emotional reactivity to visual stimuli and basic personality traits

Author(s): Anđela Šoškić,Boris Đurović,Goran Opačić / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2021

Two studies with the same goal, but different instruments, investigated the correlation between basic personality traits and electrodermal reactivity to aversive visual stimuli. Study 1 focused on the Five Factor Model traits, while in Study 2, we investigated the HEXACO model, and an additional trait, Disintegration. In Study 1, emotional reactivity was expressed using Polyscore, a composite polygraph measure in which electrodermal response (EDR) had the largest weight, and it was measured with respect to stimuli with positive, neutral, and negative valences. In Study 2, we employed several measures of EDR to stimuli with negative valence. In both experiments, Conscientiousness correlated positively with EDR to aversive stimuli. Additionally, in Study 2, there was a negative correlation between Disintegration and EDR to aversive stimuli. Other traits were not related to EDR to aversive stimuli, and, in Study 1, we found no relationship between personality traits and reactivity to stimuli with positive or neutral valence.

Orhan Pamuk’un Yeni Hayat Romanına Psikanalitik Bir Yaklaşım

Author(s): Seda İzmirli Karamanlı / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 105/2021

In Orhan Pamuk’s Yeni Hayat, it is mentioned about a life which can be considered as meaningful by being converted to a fiction by the protagonist, Osman. The cycle of journey occurs in the dark depths of Osman’s subconscious. This cycle bears the signs of rootlessness, desire for liberation, and desire to become a ‘subject’. The image of angel pursued during these journeys points to Osman’s desire to find his existential meaning through an imagined ‘other’ associated with innocence and childhood, to build his identity and to be complete. During these journeys, the angelic image, which appears continuously as a way of salvation, refers to the desire to return to the paradise lost and mother figure; as well as the purification of sin. Eventually, this vicious cycle points to the process of Osman’s self-realization, self-recognition and self-discovery. Thereafter, he completes his ego and become a ‘subject’. In this article, a psychoanalytic review on Orhan Pamuk’s Yeni Hayat with the help of Sigmund Freud’s and Jacques Lacan’s theoretical perspectives on anxiety, id-ego-superego, creative writers and day-dreaming, psychoneurosis and mirror stage will be expounded.
