Žemų mokymosi pasiekimų įveikos paieška: neurodidaktinės įžvalgos

Žemų mokymosi pasiekimų įveikos paieška: neurodidaktinės įžvalgos

Author(s): Agnė Brandišauskienė,Aušra Daugirdienė,Jūratė Česnavičienė,Ramutė Bruzgelevičienė / Language(s): Lithuanian Issue: 44/2020

Lithuanian schools face the challenge of low learning achievement. International and national studies show that the results of Lithuanian school students are not tantamount. There are significant differences among different groups: between boys and girls, between students from different social–economic–cultural backgrounds, different types of localities (cities, towns or rural areas), as well as learners of different languages (Lithuanian, Russian, Polish) (Lithuania. National and Regional Education 2019. Student Achievement Gap). It is clear that the spectrum of factors influencing achievement is wide-ranging, from decisions made by students themselves, the teachers, or the schools, to the ones made in the wider settings or (context) or by municipalities. They all demand scientific discussion, but in this article we focus on the organisation of the teaching/learning process in the neurodidactic context. The work is based on theoretical insights, the core of which is neuroactivation in the learning process as one of the fundamental elements of good teaching and successful learning. In striving for quick, yet not always successful, learning achievement, we do not engage students in an in-depth learning process. Therefore, we fail to arouse interest in the subject taught; the students’ acquired knowledge is not preserved for long and is not used when necessary. By focusing on the teaching/learning process, we can lay the foundations for positive change at the neural level. Searching for the causes of low learning achievement and ways to overcome them, it is important to refer to the findings of contemporary studies concerning the connections between teaching and learning processes with the neuro-structure of children’s brains. A reciprocal connection was identified when learning changes the architecture (structure) of the brain, which in turn affects learning and attaches particular importance to the teacher’s work. It is its nature that can influence how the neuro-structure of the student’s brain changes at the cellular level. Therefore, it is important to consider aspects related to the student’s brain activity in the teaching process, namely excitation, awareness, memory and information transfer. In this respect, it makes sense to continue the research and to conceptually discuss the educational dimension and teaching/learning strategies when working with low achievers.

The City as a Place Prepared for Neurodiversity

The City as a Place Prepared for Neurodiversity

Author(s): Pavol Mazalán,Peter Mazalán / Language(s): English Issue: 1-2/2021

This study aims to analyse and reflect on the relationship between architecture and human neurodiversity. Individuals with different cognitive capabilities perceive and use space and it’s elements differently. Despite the fact that modern medicine has positively contributed toward and shift in social paradigm towards mental health and its impairments, the level of stigmatisation in the society is still relatively high, and very obvious in the European countries. A target group study examines architectural typology of psychiatric institutions of hospitals, sanatoria and social services establishments in Europe, with an emphasis on the historical context. Through the topic of care for people with mental health impairments it demonstrates the dynamic development of the role that architecture plays in relation to social interaction.

Göz Hareketleriyle Duyarsızlaştırma ve Yeniden İşleme (EMDR) Terapisi ve Uzun Dönemli Etkileri

Göz Hareketleriyle Duyarsızlaştırma ve Yeniden İşleme (EMDR) Terapisi ve Uzun Dönemli Etkileri

Author(s): Koray Akkuş / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 19/2021

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapeutic approach that has drew considerable attention and become controversial since its development. EMDR, which integrates various components of different psychotherapy schools, is a structured and short-term therapy approach. While it was initially used to reduce traumatic symptoms, recent studies indicate that EMDR may also be efficient in the treatment of various disorders. In this review, the long-term efficacy of EMDR in several disorders was investigated. For this purpose, the studies that examined the effectiveness of EMDR in common psychiatric problems such as post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety disorders and depressive disorders with at least 3-months follow-up measurements were included. Numerous controlled studies show that EMDR is a reliable method for the treatment of PTSD and treatment gains have been maintained in the long term. Moreover, a limited number of studies recently conducted indicate that EMDR gives promising results in the treatment of unipolar depression, panic disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. All in all, it can be concluded that EMDR is more effective than waiting lists and has an effect comparable with empirically supported therapies like cognitive behavioral therapy. However, the long-term follow-up studies with larger sample sizes are needed to reach reliable results.

Badanie wyrażania emocji u osób bilingwalnych

Badanie wyrażania emocji u osób bilingwalnych

Author(s): Elżbieta Sękowska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2021

The article provides a brief overview of the description and definition of emotions in various types of science, i.e. psychology, neurobiology, linguistics with a particular emphasis on anthropological linguistics. Cultural scripts postulated in research on emotional expressions in various languages are used to show the participation of cultural norms in the expression of feelings and their linguistic indicators. Formulated with the use of elementary units, they become not only a scientific method but also a very useful tool in teaching Polish as a foreign language, as evidenced by opinions of glottodidactics experts. It is postulated that teachers working in schools with students who have experienced an act of migration should take into account the emotional aspect both in terms of experience and language.

Teoria umysłu, oczekiwania społeczne a sytuacja osób z zaburzeniami w spektrum autyzmu, w tym z Zespołem Aspergera

Author(s): Wanda Baranowska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2020

The author attempted to analyse the state of research on the Theory of Mind and its deficit in people with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD), especially those with Asperger Syndrome (AS). This analysis also searched for connections between the Theory of Mind and expectations which set the rules of social interdependence. In the aspect of the analysed research, it can be concluded that the Theory of Mind is connected – through a common expectation of empathy – with the need and the rules of acceptance and respect. The biologically conditioned deficit of the Theory of Mind of people with ASD causes a high risk of rejecting these people because they do not meet social expectations.

D. D. jak dreszcz demencji

D. D. jak dreszcz demencji

Author(s): Hanna Serkowska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 34/2018

The claim here is that cultural representations of dementia may benefit from the structure of crime fiction which appears therefore to be among the theme most suited genres. We do not know enough about the disease or its etiology (the “culprit” remains unknown), hence the situation of the sufferer befits that of enigma or suspense, fear or confusion, doubt and presumption, standardly deployed by detective stories. Crime fiction narratives underscore that which is at stake in dementia: the riddle of disappearing of the person affected, the puzzle of memory loss, the identity doubt which extends to the relative when he or she is not recognized by the sufferer. By turning to a detective genre, Alzheimer’s novel profits from the genre’s growing popularity, owing to the reading public’s demand for challenges enhancing “mind reading” competences and training predictive abilities. The latter are more in demand as neurocognitive standards of readers grow.

Profesor Camilleri i pan Caravaggio. Multimodalne studium twórczości i psychozy

Profesor Camilleri i pan Caravaggio. Multimodalne studium twórczości i psychozy

Author(s): Ksenia Olkusz / Language(s): Polish Issue: 34/2018

Multimodal techniques (meaning the use of narrative modes signalised by various typographies etc.) enable a fuller presentation of Caravaggio’s mental dysfunction (in the novel the focalizing role is performed by, among others, the notes of the painter who is falling into obsession and madness – it is these that form his internal storyworld). Confrontation with the journalistic account, provided by the alter ego of the very author of the novel (so called sylleptic narrator) – that is the second level of narration – constitutes the modal frame for the presentation of the artist’s fate and contributes to showing the mental state of Caravaggio who is obsessed with “black sun” (this obsession might be the source of the chiaroscuro technique), and who sees in hallucinations his own severed head. This way, Camilleri creatively exploits the motif of decapitation, found in Caravaggio’s paintings, following many research studies showing that the heads found in the paintings could have been the painter’s self-portraits and expressions of his expiation. This context is supplemented by reproductions of Caravaggio’s paintings, which are embedded in the narration and “commented upon” in his fictional journal, thus constituting yet another layer registering (and illustrating) what takes place in the artist’s mind.

Author(s): Iryna Herasymiuk,Natalya Grinko,Bohdan Sumariuk / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2021

BIG FIVE PERSONALITY TRAITS AS PREDICTORS OF MINDFULNESS: A STUDY ON A BOSNIAN SAMPLE

Author(s): Sabina Alispahić,Enedina Hasanbegović-Anić,Đenita Tuce / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2021

The goal of present study was to examine the relationship between mindfulness and Big five personality traits on Bosnian sample. We used the following instruments: Sociodemographic scale, Five Factor Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ) and The Big Five Inventory. According to the results, there is a moderate and inverse correlation between mindfulness and Neuroticism, and small to moderate positive correlations with other Big five personality traits (Openness, Conscientiousness, Agreeableness and Extraversion). The results of multiple regression analysis showed that Big five personality traits explain the significant proportion of the variance for the criterion variable mindfulness and that the significant predictors for mindfulness were Neuroticism, Conscientiousness and Openness. More research is needed to explore this multi-faceted nature of both Big five personality traits and mindfulness.

OSOBINE LIČNOSTI NASTAVNIKA KAO DETERMINANTA PERCEPCIJE STRESA I MENTALNOG ZDRAVLJA

Author(s): Anela Hasanagić,Almira Isić-Imamović,Muharem Adilović / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 19/2021

Numerous research studies have shown that teaching profession is one of those most susceptible to stress. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, there are also some additional aggravating circumstances which might be considered stress factors among teachers, primarily a low socio-economic status and forced adaptation to systematic school changes. Moreover, teachers are often victims of a social and moral crisis as well as of the changed roles in education. This paper aims to provide an insight into the current state of teachers' mental health, the presence of stress and stress factors, and to investigate whether and to what extent personality traits and social and economic factors are significant predictors of teachers' perception of stress and their mental health. The following instruments were used: BIG 5, Teacher Stress Inventory (TSI) and Mental Health Inventory (MHI). The sample comprised 181 teachers working in state elementary and high schools in B&H. The results indicate that a moderate level of stress is present among teachers. The stress sources are mainly professional limitations (M=2,56), the issue of discipline and students' motivation (M=2,46), and stress factors related to profession (M=2,47) – large classes, too much paperwork, too little time and money for preparation. The most common manifestations of stress are cardiovascular disorders (M=2,02), fatigue (M=1,91) and emotional disorders (M=1,87). Statistically significant correlations were found between personality traits of extroversion of comfort, conscientiousness, neuroticism and openness, ranging from 0,169 to 0,381. The strongest correlation existed between neuroticism and extroversion. Neuroticism was mainly found to correlate positively with the subscales of stress and stress manifestations, while extroversion was in a negative correlation with stress perception and manifestation. In terms of the correlation between personality traits and MHI subscales, the correlation was in the range between 0,218 and 0,590, with the subscale of neuroticism showing moderately high correlation with anxiety, depression, behavior and emotional control, psychological instability, but also demonstrating negative correlation with psychological well-being, general positive affect and general mental health index.

Artificial Intelligence in Music Production

Artificial Intelligence in Music Production

Author(s): Marek Šimončič,Lenka Kajanovičová / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2021

The paper explores the connection between artificial intelligence and music production and consists of two main chapters. The theoretical part provides general knowledge on artificial intelligence. The empirical part tries to answer how experts perceive the phenomenon of artificial intelligence in music production, also confronting and explaining their findings. Artificial intelligence is currently being implemented in various areas of human life. With its effect, many people rightly fear that they will remain in their jobs, but it should be added that the main goal of artificial intelligence is not to destroy and replace human individuals, but to help them and speed up their work process. It is scientifically proven that when listening to music, different parts of the brain are involved in the thought process; As for the creative process of playing a musical instrument, both hemispheres of the brain participate in this process. Exploring the implemented artificial intelligence in music production is an interesting direction of research.

Psychological and Physiological Anxiety and Stress in Competitive E-Sports Settings

Psychological and Physiological Anxiety and Stress in Competitive E-Sports Settings

Author(s): Nina Urukovičová / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2021

Competitive E-sport has grown rapidly across the globe. In line with the increase in competitive gaming, the interest into the science underpinning performance has accelerated dramatically in the last decade. Despite the remarkable surge of popularity in E-sports, there is limited academic literature that has explicitly investigated the psychophysiological factors influencing performance of elite level E-sports during competitive gameplay. As Esports athletes are competing in highly pressurized and competitive environments that are comparable to traditional sports, it is likely that psychophysiological responses exist in an E-sports performance environment. Therefore, it is important to enhance our understanding of these responses that E-sports participants face, because stress and anxiety is likely to have a negatively impact on performance in such an environment. The present review aims to investigate whether playing E-sports in competitive settings is related to psychological and physiological anxiety and stress. Although the existing literature contributes to an initial understanding of psychophysiological anxiety and stress in E-sports, there needs to be further in-depth studies investigating the psychophysiological responses in actual competition.

When Facial Expression Analysis and Explicit Questionnaire Evaluation do not Match. Neuromarketing Paradox Explained

When Facial Expression Analysis and Explicit Questionnaire Evaluation do not Match. Neuromarketing Paradox Explained

Author(s): Pavel Žiaran / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2020

The objective of the research is to understand relations between the explicit questionnaire-based evaluation and the automated facial expressions analysis, for the case of flavored beers (lemon and grapefruit flavors / sweet sour and sweet bitter taste). The challenge is to reconcile with the measurement paradox that bitter and sour taste generate spontaneous negative emotional expressions, even if the consumer likes the product. We employed software for the facial expression analysis (by iMotion, using Affdex algorithm) and the explicit questionnaire values (I like the taste vs. I do not like the taste). Analysis was based on the non-parametric tests, correlations and three-dimensional graphs. Explicit questionnaire evaluations generate statistically significant relations with some emotional expressions, measured as video frames count (joy positively, contempt negatively). Paradoxically, positive and negative expressions co-appear in the situation of positive explicit evaluation of the product. Analysis showed that this situation occurs at the mutual co-appearance of surprise (implying the increased level of mental processing). Study results contribute to the understanding of consumer´s preferences in the cases where the explicit and implicit measurements do not match directly, notably in the context of bitter or sour taste products.

Difficulties in cognitive emotion regulation plays role in psychological disorders. There are significant emotional regulation difficulties underlying obsessive compulsive disorder and obsessive beliefs. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between obsessive beliefs and cognitive emotion regulation in adults according to various sociodemographic components. There search was carried out with 250 non-clinical participants, 131 of the mare women and 119 of the mare men, aged between 18 and 60, living in Istanbul. Data were collected from the participants using the sociodemographic information form, Obsessive Beliefs Scale-44, and Cognitive Emotion Regulation Scale. According to the results of the applied correlation analysis; A significant positive correlation was found between obsessive beliefs and emotion regulation components. It has been determined that cognitive emotion regulation strategies applied by individuals with negative situations are related to obsessive beliefs, and cognitive emotion regulation strategies such as focusing on thoughts, destruction (catastrophe) and self-blame cause an increase in obsessive beliefs. It is thought that teaching and using more functional strategies instead of dysfunctional cognitive emotion regulation strategies will be beneficial in preventing them from developing obsessive beliefs.

ONLINE TOOLS FOR INTRODUCING NEURODIVERSITY IN JOB INTERVIEWS WITH ENGINEERING STUDENTS

ONLINE TOOLS FOR INTRODUCING NEURODIVERSITY IN JOB INTERVIEWS WITH ENGINEERING STUDENTS

Author(s): Mihaela Pricope,Simona Mazilu,Fabiola Popa / Language(s): English Issue: 03/2020

Recently, the business world has evinced a growing interest in the concept of “inclusive hiring” and software and technical – oriented enterprises such as Microsoft, Ford, Hewlett Packard Enterprises, and IBM, have implemented Human Resources neurodiverse talent programmes. According to Harvard Business Review, interviewed employers mention that the benefits of employing neurodiverse people include “productivity gains, quality improvement, boosts in innovative capabilities, and broad increases in employee engagement”. Thus, neurodiverse people are considered a competitive advantage for technical companies because they prove to have excellent digital and mathematical skills, creativity and pattern recognition competencies. Having said that, one must also be aware that neurodiverse employees thrive only when their special needs with regard to the working place are met. The present article looks into the issue of neurodiversity with a view to tackling the way in which the concept can be introduced to technical students who study interviewing skills as part of their English for Professional Communication seminar. After a short overview of the main characteristics of Generation Z, whose education and day-to-day life have been constantly informed by technology, we proceed to the presentation of the concept of "neurodiversity" highlighting the reasons why engineering students should be aware of it and understand its complexity in order to be better prepared for an inclusive work environment. The paper presents various seminar tasks by means of which neurodiversity may be taught using online sources such as companies’ statements on the topic, testimonials from employers or employees or interviewing practices for neurodiverse candidates. Exposing the students to these aspects develops their sense of inclusiveness which is a value they should be able to transfer from the educational context to the professional setting.

A NEUROLINGUISTICS EXPERIMENT BASED ON A NOVEL PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT TOOL

Author(s): Adelina Mirzea,Dumitru Grigore,Nicolae Goga,Ionel Petrescu,Alexandru-Filip Popovici,Ramona Dragomir,Marinel Cornelius DINU / Language(s): English Issue: 02/2020

The science of neurolinguistics represents the study of brain activity as related to the control, acquisition and production of language. Neurolinguistics looks to the mechanism through which the brain processes language concepts. It is an interdisciplinary field at the intersection of linguistics, neuropsychology, communication, computer science, a theory of languages. It is taught in the field of learning foreign languages but it is of interest in other educational disciplines such as psychology, computer science, etc. as well. Neurolinguistics is based both on experimental methods and theoretical models. In this paper we present a novel neurolinguistics experiment done with psychological iOT tool, namely MindMiTM System, that is described in a patent. MindMiTM System is based on the biopotentials measurements (response and levels of skin potentials) taken from the hand's fingers with the help of a finger scanner (for both hands) with monopolar electrodes. All the data needed for a psychological measurement is collected in approximately five minutes. Based on the gathered data, the psychological profile is computed through an innovative method. The system was calibrated on 5000 subjects. The method is based on relevant variables related to personality traits such as for example the level of cortical arousal, the lability and amplitude of electro-dermal response, etc. The algorithm based on those key variables computes a kernel of psychological indicators that reflect cognitive, emotional and social abilities. For the first time in the reported literature, we used the MindMiTM System for a neurolinguistics experiment. The experiment is based on interpreters translating the same text in Romanian, English and German. We present the core technology of the system and the results obtained. The system itself can be used also in educational settings by students in psychology, linguistics computer science, etc.
