Item Analysis of Sociocultural Influences in Verbal Ability Testing Using the Woodcock-Johnson IV COG

Author(s): Tomáš Mrhálek,Alena Hricová,Stanislav Ondrášek / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2024

The article presents the results of a study that examines the impact of sociocultural environment on the development of verbal skills in Romani children aged 7–11 years, with a particular emphasis on children from socially excluded localities. The results are based on a verbal test derived from the Woodcock-Johnson Cognitive Ability Test (WJ IV COG), which was processed using item analysis according to the Rasch model. The main results are based on analysing the differential function of individual items within the verbal tests within the research group (N = 399) compared to the normative sample of the Czech population (N = 936). A secondary goal is to compare Romani children originating from socially excluded areas (N = 204) with those from non-excluded areas (N = 195). Regarding item comparisons between the majority and sample groups, they reveal significant disparities in 14 items (70%) of the Synonyms subtest and 9 items (45%) of the Antonyms subtest. The results highlight the crucial role of a more limited vocabulary, particularly in formal linguistic expressions by Romani children. The presented words representing differently functioning items can also serve as a basis for linguistic analysis and can be applied in assessing educational needs. When comparing the group of children based on their residence in a socially excluded locality, significant differences in the DIF were identified for one item from the Synonyms subtest and three items from the Antonyms subtest.

Author(s): Aleksandra Stolarczyk,Patrycjusz Matwiejczuk / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2024

The aim of the study was to check whether there is a relationship between the sense of meaning in life and the level of depression felt by people participating in closed forums on Facebook`s about depression, and to determine whether there are diff erences in the sense of meaning in life and the level of depression felt due to having a social network. support. This goal was achieved by conducting research using the KPD and KPŻ questionnaires. The analysis of the obtained research results indicates an existing relationship between the sense of meaning in life and the level of depression felt by people participating in closed Facebook forums about depression. People who do not have a clearly defi ned goal, do not understand their place in the world and consider their lives monotonous are more likely to experience depressive symptoms. This relationship also works in the opposite direction - the severity of depressive symptoms reduces the sense of meaning in one’s existence. The results of the analyzes allowed for the verifi cation and confi rmation of the main hypotheses. Not all detailed hypotheses were confi rmed due to the lack of statistically signifi cant relationships between the variables.

Marginality as a way to gaining identity. Mentalization-based treatment approaches towards minority individuals

Marginality as a way to gaining identity. Mentalization-based treatment approaches towards minority individuals

Author(s): Nikolay Dimitrov / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

The text analyses the process of marginalization purposefully mediated or moderated by the individual, and to which they have been subjected unintentionally or against their will, to acquire a (new) identity, which in most cases and to varying degrees turns out to be desired by the individual themselves, and subsequently becomes permanently maintained until it is established (accepted), but now of their own volition. The process is particularly visible in cases where it accompanies or follows another process – the so called "auto-" or "self-segregation". Issues of inequality and social exclusion remain outside the focus of therapy, but a possible approach with proven positive influence and beneficial impact is mentalization-based therapy, especially in terms of attachment issues faced by marginalized people, given that mentalization can be a form of protection against minority stress and problems faced by marginalized group members.

Author(s): Shukria Shirwa / Language(s): English Issue: 63/2024

Using the self-determination theory, the study investigates resilience and well-being in young Somali refugees residing in Turkey (SDT). The ongoing difficulties that Somali refugee youth encounter must be well comprehended to determine how these factors affect their ability to adapt and their psychological health. Through the application of SDT's three psychological needs - autonomy, competence, and relatedness - the research seeks to investigate the variables that both contribute to and affect the resilience and overall wellbeing of young Somali refugees. The study examined how these needs were met in the face of displacement problems and how they affected the participants' resilience using a qualitative approach and in-depth interviews. The study's conclusions demonstrated that in spite of difficulties and misfortunes, Somali refugee youth displayed extraordinary perseverance and their attempt to their fundamental psychological demands. The study revealed that fulfilling three essential needs enhances individuals' well-being in various aspects of life, such as work, hobbies, education, language, and social support. These findings underscore the importance of establishing an environment that nurtures autonomy, competence, and relatedness to increase resilience and overall well-being. These results have significant implications for future interventions and policymakers aiming to support refugees.

Psychological resistance is a person's ability to resist and deal with difficulties. People have this power in difficult situations. Even the stress experienced can be turned into personal gain. It has been observed that as a result of the experienced situations, people may increase their psychological resistance or lose this ability. Research on college students confirms these claims. Young people with a healthy psyche in the learning process very easily manage their stress. In the event of a dispute or conflict, they exhibit very calm and correct behavior. They do not allow the sources of stress to exhaust them and reduce their responsibility to society, they tend to recover faster and return to their normal way of life.

Author(s): Serdar CEYHUN,Sevim Handa YILMAZ,Gökhan Dokuzoğlu,Pinar KARACAN DOĞAN / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 3/2023

As sports competition intensifies, the importance of athletes being mentally prepared becomes increasingly prominent, alongside their physical readiness. Mental toughness is a key component that greatly characterises this notion of preparedness. The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between the intensity of sports passion and the level of mental resilience among students studying in the faculty of sports sciences. The study was structured using the relational scanning model, and data collection was conducted through a survey comprising three sections. The initial section encompasses demographic data, the subsequent section encompasses the Sports Mental Toughness Inventory, and the final section encompasses the Sports Passion Scale. The data was disseminated to the participants through Google forms following the acquisition of ethical authorizations, and their voluntary participation in the research was duly considered. The research group comprises 310 students from Aydın Adnan Menderes University, consisting of 138 females and 172 males. The selection of participants was done using a convenient sampling method. Statistical analyses were conducted, including frequency and percentage calculations, reliability coefficient calculations, correlation analysis, hierarchical regression analysis, and Manova analysis. The research findings revealed a correlation between the confidence and continuity sub-dimensions of mental toughness in sports and the subdimensions of passion in sports. Additionally, there was a significant difference in the participants' gender, weekly sports frequency, and sports history variables. The research findings indicate that when students studying at the faculty of sports sciences have a strong and balanced passion for sports, their participation in sports aligns with their personal values and other aspects of their lives. Additionally, the participants' level of mental endurance influences their level of passion for sports. Furthermore, it can be asserted that there is no notable disparity in the levels of mental resilience and enthusiasm for sports among students enrolled in the faculty of sports sciences based on the participants' age. Moreover, as the duration of participants' engagement in sports activities increases, their levels of selfassurance, command, and consistency also rise, consequently leading to an enhancement in their mental endurance levels. Participants who engage in sports 1-2 days a week can be considered more adaptable compared to other participants. Conversely, individuals who engage in sports daily tend to exhibit a higher level of obsession compared to those who spend less time on sports.

Determinants of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Syrian Refugees living in Turkey's four cities

Author(s): Alime Sönmez Tombak / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

Circumstances of forced migrations are associated with increased post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Research indicates that Syrian refugees are highly vulnerable and likely to experience various mental diseases due to forced migration and warrelated traumatic events. Also, there are geographical-based differences in the psychological stress outcomes of refugees. The objective of the research is to examine the differences in self-reported PTSD due to circumstances of forced migration among Syrian refugees living in Turkey (N=777 respondents) by their living city. To explore which group of factors had the most significant influence on PTSD, I conducted multiple logistic regression analyses for 777 respondents. Considering logistic analysis results, self-reporting post-traumatic stress is more common among Syrian refugees who live in large cities (İstanbul/İzmir) and Syrian border conservative cities (Şanlıurfa), have poorer self-expressed health status, experience war-related situations, feel unsafe in their neighbourhood and receive less support from their families when faced with problems. These findings point to the importance of assessing self-reported PTSD due to the circumstances of refugees. Furthermore, these results show that refugees feel the burden of the experiences they carry differently.

Отношението към времето като културна норма

Author(s): Daniela Sotirova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 5/2024

The attitude toward time is seen as a cultural norm that is essential for the harmonization of intercultural communications. A philosophical-anthropological study of the perception of time is provided here. Different types of time are considered. The constructs of time perspective and cultural intelligence are introduced. It is being discussed whether "slow" is a Bulgarian cultural norm, i.e., whether "Despacito" is the national anthem of Bulgaria, according to the Siri app - the errors propagated by the computer programs going around the world should be refuted. As a way to achieve this, in the article, a systematic philosophical and analytical review of the concepts of relation to time is presented. Specifics related to the concepts of mental models, cultural intelligence, and cultural clusters are proposed. They can be helpful in understanding cultural differences and communicating more effectively.
