O potrzebie przygotowania nauczycieli do bycia z dziećmi i młodzieżą doświadczonymi kryzysem lub traumą

Author(s): Justyna Sztobryn-Bochomulska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 62/2023

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the analysis is to draw attention to the aspect of the need to prepare people professionally involved in education to support children and youth in crisis or traumatic situations. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The research belongs to the area of the interpretative paradigm and the research method adopted is a qualitative content analysis of the literature on the subject and a theoretical analysis of the phenomena under discussion, specifically a hermeneutic approach assuming an in-depth understanding of educational processes taking into account the issue of the child with difficulties as well as pedeutological issues. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The consequences characteristic for emotional crises and traumas and their impact on the child’s school functioning will be shown. Then, the portrait of the traumatised pupil will be contrasted with the reality of school and the readiness and capacity of teachers to work with them. RESEARCH RESULTS: The school as an institution is legally obliged to provide access to education for all students, but these arrangements are not always sufficient. Thus, the key role of the teacher, who becomes one of the most important chain of support given to pupils in the educational coexistence with them, becomes crucial. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: The challenges facing the modern school require professionals involved in the education of children and youth to be prepared to work skillfully and give support to students in many aspects, also in terms of the mental health crisis.

Relationship between Leisure Satisfaction and Addiction to Social Media: Case Study on Sports Students of Lebanese French University

Author(s): Sohail Imran Khan,Karzan Qader HAMAD / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2023

In this digital age, when every second person has access to the internet, one is more likely to spend too much time surfing. Recently, due to the Covid-19 virus, the general public faced a total lockdown for the first time. As a result, the Internet has become the only source of entertainment and communication. In this pandemic situation, along with other students, sports students spent a lot of time on social media because they had no choice but to sit at home and not go out and play. This study was conducted to find a relationship between leisure satisfaction and addiction to social media. The study population consisted of students engaged in any sports activity from the Lebanese French University, Erbil. The sample counted 224 (107 male and 117 female) stu- dents. Data was collected from the students with the help of a structured questionnaire. To reach a conclusion, T-Test and Anova were used. It was found out that the students’ gender and age affect their levels of leisure satisfaction. It turned out that the female students were more satisfied with their leisure time than their male counterparts. However, among university students, a signifi- cant negative relationship was found between leisure satisfaction and addiction to social media.

Godność człowieka pasją wychowawczą doktor Wandy Półtawskiej

Author(s): Mariola Teresa Kozubek / Language(s): Polish Issue: 63/2023

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of the article is to show the educational passion of Wanda Półtawska, shaped under the influence of war experiences and recognizing in the background of the ethical chaos and anthropological crisis that the 21st century is marked by.RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The research problem is defined: why and in what sense does the dignity of the human person become the essence of Wanda Półtawska’s educa- tional passion? In searching the answer to it, the hermeneutics of her texts and statements used, as well as the analysis of her narrative during personal meetings with the Author of this article.THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: First, several representative characters, who had the dramatic experiences of the Second World War were shown. Transcending extermination camp sufferings (passio), they started various initiatives for protecting human dignity. Then, the selected aspects concerning Wanda Półtawska’s dignity attitude were presented from her biography. The third part exposes the theses regarding the main value of human life, which Wanda Półtawska passes to young generations with real passion.RESEARCH RESULTS : The conducted analysis shows that Dr Półtawska's educational passion is to awaken the awareness of personal dignity and the dignity of every human being in young generations. Dr. Półtawska justifies this from the perspective of theological reflection on human dignity and explicates it in the phrase "genealogia divina - God's origin of man."CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: The analysis and interpretation of the collected research material on the life of Wanda Półtawska brings out the value of passion. It is the original “pedagogy of life” understood as upbringing – educational attitude that leads a young person towards discovering the sense of life, by becoming aware of dignity of every human being to self, regardless of the circumstances.

SPECIFICITIES IN THE PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILE OF THE VISUALLY DISABLED CHILD

SPECIFICITIES IN THE PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILE OF THE VISUALLY DISABLED CHILD

Author(s): Adriana Ciobanu,Liudmila Iagușevschi / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 35/2023

Visual disability (blindness or amblyopia) causes serious deviations in mental development. Visual disability disrupts the balance of the body and the environment, which creates a number of significant features in the development and manifestations of psychic processes. The defect of mental development itself in the visual disability includes a primary defect - an underdevelopment of the visual analyzer and secondary defects - disorders of perception, thinking, speech, memory, attention, special personality characteristics, changes in the behavioral-affective sphere, the reduced degree of maturation affective and social adaptation, especially at young ages, at the beginning of schooling. Thus, visual pathology inevitably leads to certain negative changes in the mental development of the visually impaired. In order for the correctional impact to be effective, and for growth and education in the family and in educational institutions to be favorable, teachers, psychologists and parents must know specifics in the psychological profile of visual impairments.

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SOCIAL SUPPORT AND DEPRESSION IN THE LGBT+ POPULATION: A META-ANALYSIS

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SOCIAL SUPPORT AND DEPRESSION IN THE LGBT+ POPULATION: A META-ANALYSIS

Author(s): Laura Bercea,Sebastian Pintea,Éva Kállay / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2023

Introduction: Previous research investigating the relationship between social support and depression in the LGBT+ community yielded mixed results. Considering that the LGBT+ population has a high prevalence of mental disorders and is frequently victim of discrimination, it would be essential to know if social support is related to the depressive symptoms its representatives face. The main purpose of this meta-analysis was to clarify whether there is a correlation between social support and depression in the LGBT+ population and to identify moderators of this relationship. Methods: EBSCO, PubMed, and PsychNET databases were searched. Studies that reported statistical indicators for the relationship between social support and depression in an LGBT+ sample were included in this meta-analysis. Results: 48 studies were eligible for the meta-analysis. Our results show that there is a significant negative moderate relationship between social support and depression in the LGBT+ community. The heterogeneity of the results in the literature is partially explained by the way social support was defined and measured, by gender, sexual orientation, and ethnicity. Limitations and implications of the current study are discussed. Discussion: Practical implications of these results include promoting social support, and acceptance at individual and social levels, with more emphasis on policies and practices that foster well-being and a positive climate, that encourage information sharing, and offering support related to LGBT+ issues. It is also important to create safe spaces for sexual minority youth. Considering the LGBT+ adults, all these aspects can be implemented as well in work contexts, to promote safe spaces and accepting attitudes in the workspace.

Kvir zajedničko: politika prijateljstva, ljubavi i afekata

Author(s): Jelisaveta Blagojević,Slavco Dimitrov / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

The paper examines the relations between class struggles, critique of capitalism, and queer struggles through the commodification of desire and identitarian mystification of social and political histories, genealogies, and inequalities, and brings forward the concept and practices of queer common/s as a critical tool for queer politics and intersectional struggles. With the queer common/s, we address multiple perspectives and problems related to the Common/s. The queer commons, in our paper, mark at the same time, the lived experiences, the sedimented forms of life, and habituated genres of feeling and orientations towards the world, as much as what is in excess coming from the virtual, the undecidable and undetermined, the potential coming from the future and the relation with otherness, as a gesture of openness towards the potentiality of being-otherwise, becoming and forming alternative worlds, relations, belonging and commons, starting precisely from the social relationality and exposure testified by the everyday and historical experiences of queer people. This understanding of the queer commons is investigated in particular through three forms of relations, sociality and sensibility – friendship, love, and affects – all of which, in the history of Western experience, play a constitutive role in the collective political imaginations of community, politics, the nation, sovereignty, the subject, and embodiment, on the one hand, and they are also locations of re-articulation of these categories throughout the history of queer politics, cultures, and intimacy, on the other hand.

CRIMINOGENIC THINKING AND PERSONALITY AT INMATES FROM ROMANIA

CRIMINOGENIC THINKING AND PERSONALITY AT INMATES FROM ROMANIA

Author(s): Maria-Miana DINA,Jose Manuel Rodriguez Gomez,Cornelia Rada / Language(s): English Issue: 13/2023

Objective. The objective was to identify and analyze how criminogenic thinking and personality are involved in delinquency and crime in order to prevent criminal behavior. Material and methods. Data were collected from 300 male inmates, with ages between 21 and 65, definitively sentenced and in custody in seven Romanian penitentiaries. An omnibus questionnaire and two psychological questionnaires were used: the Criminogenic Cognitions Scale and the CP5F Personality Questionnaire. Results. Compared to the control group, the group of people deprived of liberty convicted of murder obtained a statistically significantly higher mean for the short-term planning subscale and lower for the extraversion, conscientiousness and emotional stability subscales. The variability of the score for the thinking pattern specific to short-term planning is due to 59% of the low conscientiousness score F(148,149) = 9.32, p < .05, and in turn the conscientiousness score is explained in proportion to 38% of the negative cognitive pattern score against authority F(148, 149) = 5.79, p < .05 and 33% of that of insensitivity to impact F(148, 149) = 5.02, p < .05. At the same time, the conscientiousness score explains 35% of the emotional stability score F(148, 149) = 81.69, p < .01. Conclusions. The specialized intervention regarding social reintegration intended for this category of people requires a careful orientation towards assuming social norms, emotional balancing, adaptation in society, previewing the consequences and developing the ability to make long-term plans.

DRUG TRAFFICKING AND ILLICIT USE IN COMPLEX SOCIAL CRISES

DRUG TRAFFICKING AND ILLICIT USE IN COMPLEX SOCIAL CRISES

Author(s): Valeriu Fîrțală / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2023

Drug trafficking and illicit consumption determine the development of elements generating negative effects on multiple levels, particularly affected being the socio-economic, public health, public order and national security components. In the context of overlapping these effects with the effects of other crisis situations (health, economic crisis, military conflicts, etc.), we find the existence of complex social crises, difficult to manage, which produce immediate but also long-term effects, extensively, on the entire society.

Nadzieja na sukces a poczucie własnej skuteczności pilotów wojskowych

Author(s): Joanna Wierzejska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 4/2022

Having a difficult and dangerous occupation requires not only knowledge and skills but also specific personal resources. A military pilot is an aircraft operator performing complex air missions where effective performance of his work basically depends on the level of his flight training but also on his hope for success conditioned by various subjective and situational factors. The analyses provided in this article consider hope as a variable correlating with the sense of effectiveness of a selected group of helicopter and transport aircraft pilots. The research used a diagnostic survey method with application of a questionnaire technique. The results obtained confirmed the hypothetical assumption of a statistical relationship between these variables. It turned out that the higher the level of self-efficacy was, the higher hope for success the surveyed military pilots had.

Risk factors and outcomes of internet gaming disorder identified in Korean prospective adolescent cohort study

Risk factors and outcomes of internet gaming disorder identified in Korean prospective adolescent cohort study

Author(s): Gihwan Byeon,Sun-Jin Jo,Jong-Ik Park,Hyunsuk Jeong,Hae Kook Lee,Hyeon Woo Yim / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2022

Internet gaming disorder (IGD) is known to cause various psychological and physical complications. Through data collected from an adolescent prospective longitudinal cohort, we examined how IGD is related to lifestyle and physical symptoms, as well as the temporal relationship between them. Methods: This study was conducted as part of iCURE (Internet user Cohort for Unbiased Recognition of gaming disorder in Early Adolescence) in Korea between 2015 and 2019. Sleep and physical activity time, dry eye symptoms, musculoskeletal pain, and near-miss accidents were measured at baseline and followed-up after one year. IGD risk was evaluated using the Internet Game Use – Elicited Symptom Screen (IGUESS). The association between IGD risk and measured variables was analyzed, both at baseline and at follow-up after one year. Results: At baseline, the IGD risk group had significantly less physical activity time and sleep time and had more dry eye symptoms, musculoskeletal pain, and near-miss accidents than the IGD non-risk group. Additionally, in the IGD risk group at baseline, dry eye symptoms, musculoskeletal pain, and near-miss accidents occurred significantly more after one year of follow-up. Discussion and conclusion: The results of this study show that IGD is a significant risk factor that increases the probability of physical disease and trauma in adolescents. Therefore, interventions aimed at reducing IGD risk and protecting the physical and mental health of adolescents are imperative.

Attentional biases and daily game craving dynamics: An ecological momentary assessment study

Attentional biases and daily game craving dynamics: An ecological momentary assessment study

Author(s): Yucheng Zhou,Yanling Zhou,Jifan Zhou,Mowei Shen,Meng Zhang / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2022

Theories posit that the combination of external (e.g. cue exposure) and internal (e.g. attention biases) factors contributes to the development of game craving. Nevertheless, whether different components of attentional biases (namely, engagement bias and disengagement bias) play separate roles on game craving has not been fully elucidated. We aimed to examine the associations between two facets of attentional biases and game craving dynamics under a daily life setting. Methods: Participants (110 regular internet game players) accomplished the modified attentional assessment task in the laboratory, after which they entered a 10-day ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to collect data on their momentary game craving and occurrence of game-related events at five different time points per day. Results: We found that occurrence of game-related events was significantly associated with increased game craving. Moreover, attentional disengagement bias, instead of engagement bias, bore on the occasional level variations of game craving as moderating variables. Specifically, attentional disengagement bias, not engagement bias, was associated with a greater increase in game craving immediately after encountering a game-related event; however, neither attentional engagement bias nor disengagement bias was associated with the craving maintenance after a relatively long period. Discussion and conclusions: The present study highlights the specific attentional processes involved in game craving dynamics, which could be crucial for designing interventions for attentional bias modification (ABM) in Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) populations.

Temporal associations between physical activity and three types of problematic use of the internet: A six-month longitudinal study

Temporal associations between physical activity and three types of problematic use of the internet: A six-month longitudinal study

Author(s): Po-Ching Huang,Jung-Sheng Chen,Marc N. Potenza,Mark D. Griffiths,Amir H. Pakpour,Ji-Kang Chen,Yi-Ching Lin,Ching-Hsia Hung,Kerry S. O’brien,Chung-Ying Lin / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2022

Internet use has become an important part of daily living. However, for a minority it may become problematic. Moreover, problematic use of the Internet/smartphone (PUIS) has been associated with low physical activity. The present study investigated the temporal associations between three types of PUIS (i.e., problematic smartphone use [PSPU], problematic social media use [PSMU] and problematic gaming [PG]) and physical activity among Taiwanese university students. Methods: A six-month longitudinal survey study comprising three time points for assessments was conducted. From the original 974 participants, a total of 452 completed all three waves of an online survey comprising the International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short Form (IPAQ-SF) assessing physical activity level, Smartphone Application-Based Addiction Scale (SABAS) assessing PSPU, Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (BSMAS) assessing PSMU, and Internet Gaming Disorder Short Form (IGDS9-SF) assessing PG. Results: The linear mixed effects model found positive temporal associations of PSMU and PG with physical activity level (PSMU: B 5 85.88, SE 5 26.24; P 5 0.001; PG: B 5 36.81, SE 5 15.17; P 5 0.02). PSPU was not associated with physical activity level (B 5 40.54, SE 5 22.99; P 5 0.08). Additionally, the prevalence rates were 44.4% for at-risk/ PSPU, 24.6% for at-risk/PSMU, and 12.3% for at-risk/PG. Discussion and Conclusions: PSMU and PG unexpectedly demonstrated correlations with higher physical activity level. The nature of these relationships warrants additional investigation into the underlying mechanisms in order to promote healthy lifestyles among university students.

Despite its inclusion in the 11th revision of the International Classification of Diseases, there is a virtual paucity of high-quality scientific evidence about compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD), especially in underrepresented and underserved populations. Therefore, we comprehensively examined CSBD across 42 countries, genders, and sexual orientations, and validated the original (CSBD-19) and short (CSBD-7) versions of the Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder Scale to provide standardized, state-of-the-art screening tools for research and clinical practice. Method: Using data from the International Sex Survey (N 5 82,243; Mage 5 32.39 years, SD 5 12.52), we evaluated the psychometric properties of the CSBD-19 and CSBD-7 and compared CSBD across 42 countries, three genders, eight sexual orientations, and individuals with low vs. high risk of experiencing CSBD. Results: A total of 4.8% of the participants were at high risk of experiencing CSBD. Country- and gender-based differences were observed, while no sexual-orientation-based differences were present in CSBD levels. Only 14% of individuals with CSBD have ever sought treatment for this disorder, with an additional 33% not having sought treatment because of various reasons. Both versions of the scale demonstrated excellent validity and reliability. Discussion and conclusions: This study contributes to a better understanding of CSBD in underrepresented and underserved populations and facilitates its identification in diverse populations by providing freely accessible ICD-11-based screening tools in 26 languages. The findings may also serve as a crucial building block to stimulate research into evidence-based, culturally sensitive prevention and intervention strategies for CSBD that are currently missing from the literature.

Uloga socijalnog konteksta u doživljaju stresa i straha tijekom perioda povećanog zdravstvenog rizika

Author(s): Dorotea Lovrinčević,Valentina Ružić,Koraljka Modić Stanke / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 1-2/2023

In times of crises caused by natural disasters (earthquakes, floods, pandemics), individuals experience different levels of stress and fear – making some of them vulnerable and leading to a greater need for (professional) help and support. The aim of this research was to examine the determinants of the coronavirus-related stress and fear, with focus on examining the role of the individual’s social context. A total of N=240 participants (22.1% male and 77.1% female) of an average age of 27 years (SD=8.4) completed an online questionnaire at the end of the fifth wave of coronavirus infection. Hierarchical regression analysis showed that the fear of losing a loved one accounts for 44% of the variance in experienced stress, while gender and the internal working model of self explains 8% of the variance in the fear of losing a loved one. We observed that the internal working model of self had a mediating effect on the relationship between the individual’s demographics and their experience of stress and fear, while the working model of others and the perceived social support of friends and family did not prove to be relevant. The authors discuss possible explanations of the obtained results and the practical implications of this research.

The vicious cycle of family dysfunction and problematic gaming and the mediating role of self-concept clarity among early adolescents: A within-person analysis using random intercept cross-lagged panel modeling

The vicious cycle of family dysfunction and problematic gaming and the mediating role of self-concept clarity among early adolescents: A within-person analysis using random intercept cross-lagged panel modeling

Author(s): Jianhua Zhou,Haiyan Zhao,Li’an Wang,Dandan Zhu / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2023

Backgrounds and aims: Family dysfunction is a significant risk factor for adolescent problematic gaming, yet few studies have investigated the bidirectional relations between changes in family dysfunction and adolescent problematic gaming and potential mediating mechanisms. This study thus examined the bidirectional relations between family dysfunction and adolescent problematic gaming and the mediating role of self-concept clarity within this relation. Methods: Participants included 4,731 Chinese early adolescents (44.9% girls; M age 5 10.91 years, SD 5 0.72) who were surveyed at four time points 6 months apart. Results: Random intercept cross-lagged panel modeling found (a) family dysfunction directly predicts increased problematic gaming, (b) adolescent problematic gaming directly predicts increased experience of family dysfunction, (c) family dysfunction indirectly predicts problematic gaming via self-concept clarity, and (d) adolescent problematic gaming indirectly predicts family dysfunction via self-concept clarity. Discussion and conclusions: The present study suggests that adolescents may be trapped in a vicious cycle between family dysfunction and problematic gaming either directly or indirectly through impairing their self-concept clarity. Findings indicate fostering youth self-concept clarity is essential to break the vicious circle between dysfunctional experiences in the family and problematic gaming among adolescents.

Gambling, cryptocurrency, and financial trading app marketing in English Premier League football: A frequency analysis of in-game logos

Gambling, cryptocurrency, and financial trading app marketing in English Premier League football: A frequency analysis of in-game logos

Author(s): Jamie Torrance,Conor Heath,Maira Andrade,Philip W. S. Newall / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2023

Background & aims: The gamblification of UK football has resulted in a proliferation of in-game marketing associated with gambling and gambling-like products such as cryptocurrencies and financial trading apps. The English Premier League (EPL) has in response banned gambling logos on shirt-fronts from 2026 onward. This ban does not affect other types of marketing for gambling (e.g., sleeves and pitch-side hoardings), nor gambling-like products. This study therefore aimed to assess the ban’s implied overall reduction of different types of marketing exposure. Methods: We performed a frequency analysis of logos associated with gambling, cryptocurrency, and financial trading across 10 broadcasts from the 2022/23 EPL season. For each relevant logo, we coded: the marketed product, associated brand, number of individual logos, logo location, logo duration, and whether harm-reduction content was present. Results: There were 20,941 relevant logos across the 10 broadcasts, of which 13,427 (64.1%) were for gambling only, 2,236 (10.7%) were for both gambling and cryptocurrency, 2,014 (9.6%) were for cryptocurrency only, 2,068 (9.9%) were for both cryptocurrency and financial trading, and 1,196 (5.7%) were for financial trading only. There were 1,075 shirt-front gamblingassociated logos, representing 6.9% of all gambling-associated logos, and 5.1% of all logos combined. Pitch-side hoardings were the most frequent marketing location (52.3%), and 3.4% of logos contained harm-reduction content. Discussion & Conclusions: Brand logos associated with gambling, cryptocurrency, and financial trading are common within EPL broadcasts. Approximately 1 in 20 gambling and gambling-like logos are subject to the EPL’s voluntary ban on shirt-front gambling sponsorship.

Situational features of smartphone betting are linked to sports betting harm: An ecological momentary assessment study

Author(s): Nerilee Hing,Matthew Browne,Matthew J. Rockloff,Alex M.T. Russell,Catherine Tulloch,Lisa Lole,Hannah Thorne,Philip W. S. Newall / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2023

Background and aims: Smartphones extend the situational characteristics of sports betting beyond those available with land-based and computer platforms. This study examined 1) the role of situational features and betting platforms in harmful betting behaviours and short-term betting harm, and 2) whether people with more gambling problems have preferred situational features, engage more in harmful betting behaviours, and experience more severe short-term betting harm. Methods: An ecological momentary assessment analysed 1,378 betting sessions on sports, esports or daily fantasy sports, reported by 267 respondents (18–29 years; 50.9% male) over 10 weeks. Results: Factor analysis revealed five situational features of betting sessions: 1) quick, easy access from home, 2) ability to bet anywhere anytime, 3) privacy while betting, 4) greater access to promotions and betting options, and 5) ability to use electronic financial transactions. Regression models underpinned the analyses. Greater short-term betting harm was significantly associated with the ability to bet anywhere anytime, privacy when betting, and greater access to promotions and betting options. Betting sessions when these features were prioritised were more likely to involve impulsive betting, use of betting inducements, and betting with more operators. Respondents with more gambling problems were more likely to prioritise privacy and the ability to bet anywhere anytime; and to bet on in-game events, use promotional inducements, bet with more operators, and report greater betting harm. Discussion and conclusions: Certain situational features of sports betting are empirically associated with engagement and subsequent harm. Only smartphone betting combines all three features associated with betting harm.
