“Investing in Children”: a dominant discourse on childhood and children in 21st century

“Investing in Children”: a dominant discourse on childhood and children in 21st century

Author(s): Wielisława Warzywoda-Kruszyńska / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2015

Looking at the last 30 years, one can observes the radical change in the academic and political discourse concerning childhood and children. The concept of “investing in children” has become dominant in the academic discourse and political programme of at least the European Union. Investing in children is located at the core of the social investment strategy. In this article, the social investment paradigm is characterised, and two types of arguments for investing in disadvantaged children are presented. J. Heckman’s explanations concerning the stage of a child’s life cycle in which to invest, and how, are presented. Practical implementation of the Early Child Education and Care in the European countries is outlined.

Underprivileged children in the social space of impunity: The example of the children’s residential care system in the Polish People’s Republic

Underprivileged children in the social space of impunity: The example of the children’s residential care system in the Polish People’s Republic

Author(s): Agnieszka Golczyńska-Grondas / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2015

This paper treats the social conditionings of institutional violence. First the very notion of the impunity, which creates the theoretical foundation of the consideration, is briefly discussed, followed by treatment of the scheme of the institutional(-ised) space of impunity with its constituent elements: common beliefs regarding the “nature” of the marginalised collectivity, the low social value ascribed to the collectivity, an ideological embargo on scientificallybased knowledge, and the expulsion of the marginalised from normals’ field of vision. In the main part of the article the author presents a historic example of a social space of impunity: the children’s residential care system in the Polish People’s Republic (PPR). Examples of institutional and private violence in this space of impunity are depicted in the final part of the text. The narrative and biographical interviews with institutional care-givers, narrators’ files analysis and FGIs constitute the empirical basis of the article.

Verbalne strategije majki djece različita spola pri 1pomaganju u rješavanju kognitivnih problemskih zadataka

Author(s): Lara Cakić / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 3/2015

The aim of the study was to investigate maternal verbal strategies in the process of scaffolding their children to complete cognitive tasks in the zone of proximal development, and to examine whether mothers used different verbal strategies with children of different sex. The study was conducted with mothers (N = 80) and their children (41 boys and 39 girls) aged 5 to 7. The dyads were video recorded during interaction on problem-solving tasks and the recordings were analyzed. The analysis of maternal verbal reactions was conducted after child's correct and after child's incorrect answer when children provided first incorrect and, later, correct answers. In this study there were no significant differences between maternal verbal strategies used either in the process of scaffolding children of different sex on problem-solving tasks or after the children solved the problem correctly. When children offered an incorrect answer, the most frequent maternal strategy was to encourage girls to re-think and to use the technique of scaffolding for boys. When the correct answer was given after one or a number of failed attempts, the most frequent maternal verbal strategy for boys and girls was to confirm its correctness.

Język angielski w przedszkolach: dylematy psychologiczne i pedagogiczne

Język angielski w przedszkolach: dylematy psychologiczne i pedagogiczne

Author(s): Alicja Leix,Adriana Wiegerova / Language(s): Polish Issue: 24/2014

ABC for Father and Mother and Me. Representations of children as consumers in the picturebook of the interwar period

ABC for Father and Mother and Me. Representations of children as consumers in the picturebook of the interwar period

Author(s): Elina Druker / Language(s): English Issue: 3 (34)/2016

This article examines how the child consumer is represented in a selection of branded picture books at the beginning of the 20th century. By analyzing children’s books published by a commercial chain of stores, the Cooperation Union, the article discusses how depictions of children as consumers are connected to the development of the emerging mass market and consumer society. The new ideas and marketing strategies expressed in these books also coincide with fundamental social changes in society, resulting from modernity and new technologies. Although the Cooperation books were designed for children and used familiar narrative techniques and motifs within children’s literature, I will argue that the books had a twofold audience. They were not only aimed at children but also at their parents. Representations of children as consumers in the studied material suggest that consumption is strongly connected to ideas of modernity and to representations of the modern child, but also that consumption is described as an inseparable part of the modern, urban experience.

Good to love or good to eat? Ethical and ideological implications of hunting, killing and the consumption of anthropomorphic animals in popular picturebooks

Good to love or good to eat? Ethical and ideological implications of hunting, killing and the consumption of anthropomorphic animals in popular picturebooks

Author(s): Kelly Hübben / Language(s): English Issue: 3 (34)/2016

This paper discusses the visual and narrative construction of species difference in a selection of Little Golden Books, as well as its ethical and ideological implications. I will focus on how certain picture books encourage thinking about species in terms of difference and hierarchy, while simultaneously blurring species boundaries through visual and/or verbal anthropomorphism. From an early age, children are taught that animals come in different categories, some of which are good to love, and should be treated with due respect (pets) and others that are good to eat, and, at least in Western cultures, less deserving of our compassion. Focusing on a selection of Little Golden Books, American merchandise books aimed at young readers, I investigate how children learn to distinguish between these two classes of animals.

A door to the unknown: crossing boundaries through picturebook art

A door to the unknown: crossing boundaries through picturebook art

Author(s): Katarzyna Smyczyńska / Language(s): English Issue: 3 (34)/2016

This paper engages with the question of the ethical implications of, and artistic imagination in picture books. The analysis relies on two visual narratives confronting the theme of cultural difference. The juxtaposition of the two books that share the themes of visiting and hosting, of confronting otherness, and of cultural prejudice indicates differences in their narrative and artistic potential. The analysis of formal strategies in Jemmy Button by Jennifer Uman and Valerio Vidali and in Eric by Shaun Tan serves to point out the role of artistic imagination and narrative wisdom in creating visual literature.

Producing a popular image of the Amazon rainforest and indigenous peoples in picturebooks in English-speaking societies

Producing a popular image of the Amazon rainforest and indigenous peoples in picturebooks in English-speaking societies

Author(s): Aleksandra Wierucka / Language(s): English Issue: 3 (34)/2016

For many years the media have presented the rain-forest as a fascinating and exotic place, abundant in various species of plants and animals, the home of people decorated with feathers or holding spears. Picture books are no exception. This article presents the ways a popular image of the Amazon forest is produced in picture books for young readers in English-speaking industrialized societies. The analysis shows that shaping knowledge about the tropical forest is based on stereotypes about the “untouched pristine forest” populated by “wild indigenous people” – a notion that is spurious. Some of these books undertake the subject of indigenous knowledge or the loss of cultural identity. However the presentation of these issues often lacks deeper dimensions. The exoticisation of rain- forest inhabitants as well as the forest itself may have a negative impact on young readers’ understanding of the cultural diversity of the Amazon, as well as their understanding of the complexity of indigenous peoples’ lives.

“True fiction” – the memory and the postmemory of traumatic war events in a picturebook

“True fiction” – the memory and the postmemory of traumatic war events in a picturebook

Author(s): Magdalena Howorus-Czajka / Language(s): English Issue: 3 (34)/2016

The World War II has left an emotional wound, and its direct victims as well as new generations have to cope with it. The main subject of my presentation will be an analysis of methods for presenting World War II history in against the background of a theory of memory and post memory of war’s trauma through the example of picture books which were published in Poland during the first two decades of the XXI century. I would like to discuss the main trends in presenting the issues pertaining to the war. The transcription of the Second World War memory into picture books is especially interesting for me as a historian of art. I analyze the artistic styles adapted by the artists to express difficult topics, such as the holocaust, the horror of concentrations camps, hunger, fear, loss of family, death. Composition, artistic techniques, color, vocabulary, typography – these are the tools in the hands of artists through which they can not only tell the story, but also stir up emotions and shape the personality. The picture book, like other types of art, operates through the language of fiction to tell the truth. Art is one of the languages of historical narration.

This study was organized in accordance with the aim of finding the prepoderance level of the students’ intelligence dimensions through Gardner’s multiple intelligence theory. The research universe is the third class students continuing their education at primary schools in Kars and their teachers. The sampling group is the third A-class students and their classroom teacher of Cumhuriyet Primary school in the center of Kars. As a result it was found out that the most dominant intelligence dimension was bodily kinesthetic intelligence area and the least one was internal intelligence area. When it is put into account that the students may have different dominant intelligence levels, it is necessary for the education programs to have teaching strategies and techniques according to the dominant intelligence dimensions.

Vaikas XVI-XVII a. Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės visuomenėje: galimi auklėjimo ir socializacijos modeliai

Author(s): Jolita Sarcevičienė / Language(s): Lithuanian Issue: 2(31)/2003

Philippe Aries, one of the first researchers of childhood, stated that it was only in the 16th century that young people became regarded as children. However, the situation of children did not change. For a long time to come the family remained a tyrannical institution, which, instead of protecting and taking care of children, destroyed and limited their freedom. Past ages had seen only "bad" features of their nature, therefore children were subjected to strict discipline, and physical punishment was a norm.In Lithuanian historiography, children cannot boast the attention of researchers either. Using several political and social works and occasional writings as source material and building on the studies of Western researchers, the current article provides a brief overview of children's education and socialization in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania during the 16th and 17th centuries. As researchers have noted, the attitude towards children began changing in the 16th and 17th centuries, still the ancient view did not yield its position easily. The changes first affected the elite. However, parental attention and, especially, abundant love immediately received harsh criticism. In his treatise "De politica hominum societate", basing his arguments on Plutarch, professor of Vilnius University Aaron Alexander Olizarovius claimed that parental love was determined by nature rather than by mind. A number of scholars maintained that it is the parents who must teach children proper norms of behaviour and develop values. And the means for this are an example and ... a rod.Children experience the most intensive socialization during their earliest years, i.e. within the family. During this period, the child receives most attention from the mother; this might mean that it is she who will prepare children for their eventual role in society. Still society (and family) treated sons and daughters differently from their very birth. May this be related to the different gender-based tasks to be carried out in the community in the future? It must be noted that in most cases restricted education of girls and urging to put primary emphasis on their morality were not a deliberate wish to discriminate women. It was held that immoral books might destroy the fragile morality of women, if they reached their hands; such women could use the knowledge acquired by study for justification of their downfalls, because being weak by nature they might easily yield to heretical teachings. Restricted female education was regarded to benefit women themselves. Parents were encouraged to place emphasis on the morals of their daughters and to instil in them God-fearing, piety, diligence, and respect for parents. Boys and girls had to be equally taught religiousness, piety, obedience and good morals. But the gender equality should be limited to this only. Spinning and weaving were deemed the most suitable activities for girls and chastity was of the first importance.Meanwhile the aim of a man was to incorporate himself in society. Therefore sons had to be educated in such a manner as to become citizens and be useful not to the family alone, but to the Republic and the Church as well. Boys and youths were stimulated to become educated, sophisticated and active participants in society life. The family played an essential role from the birth of a child. Family members were those who served as models; they were the first - and sometimes the only - teachers. Lawyers, moralists, and educationalists attributed great importance to parents in forming the morals of the child and encouraged them taking account of both child's body and soul. The responsibility of the parents for the future members of society was highlighted as well, therefore they were required not to express excessive love, meet children's death as the will of God and adopt strict (although correct!) measures to curb naughtiness or to punish for inadequate efforts. The society used two models of education - for girls and for boys; these were implemented through different socialisation of children. The study shows that the nature of the parent-child relationship was determined by the individual-society relations rather than by the individuals themselves.

Edukacja przyrodnicza małych dzieci – opis przyrody czy jej badanie?

Author(s): Urszula Poziomek,Andrzej Tarłowski,Dominik Marszał,Elżbieta Barbara Ostrowska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 4/2015

Recent studies of developmental psychologists show that children already in infancy can reason, explore and experience. It is not true that a child up to 7 years of age is not able to plan their actions and realize what they had planned. It is also true that children in preschool and early school should learn about nature descriptive method. Commonly accepted goals of environmental education clearly indicate that the research method is basic to obtain the understanding of natural processes and phenomena and acquiring skills of their data. The educational documents in force in Poland in kindergarten and grades IIII does not sufficiently indicated the leading role of this method in natural science education of young children, despite the changes that have been carried out during the reform program in 2008 years. There is also no consistency in the area of general and specific requirements formulated for the higher stages of education, especially for the second stage (nature, class IV–VI of primary school). This may result in problems arising from the research skills deficit in students entering grade VI of nature as well as lower results of Polish students in international studies. There are examples of good practice in this area, even if the standards and programming framework in the United States, which can be used when amending the existing document core curriculum document of pre-school education and general education in the natural area. It seems significant to institute a systemic change in kindergarten and early school teacher training, as well as to adapt the teacher support system to new challenges related to early science education.

Słownictwo dzieci w wieku przedszkolnym. Dwa pokolenia – dwa światy

Author(s): Halina Zgółkowa / Language(s): Polish Issue: 10/2016

The main subject area of this study is intergenerational confrontation of the lexical resource of pre- school children. The two generations in question are “parents”, that is people who were children in the period 1980– 1983, and “children”, which is the generation of pre- schoolers in the period 2010– 2015. Frequency dictionaries were developed for both generations on the basis of corpora of spontaneous utterances of children. A comparative overview of both lists permits identification of strictly quantitative changes (the dictionary of 2015 contains ca. 1,000 entries more than the previous one) as well as ones related to social conventions and development of civilization, which are useful in thorough linguistic and psycholinguistic research. This is the basis for indication of two children’s worlds separated from each other with a thirty years’ generational caesura, detection of (lexical and grammatical) linguistic creation areas. What is common for both frequency lists is the regularity consisting in the fact that the list of ten most frequent entries (usually synsemantic words) constitutes ca. 25% of all that were used in samples of 100 thousand, which is the so- called text coverage percentage.
