A Low Vision Student at a Younger School Age in Public School. A Case Study

A Low Vision Student at a Younger School Age in Public School. A Case Study

Author(s): Agnieszka Twaróg-Kanus / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2020

In the case of visual impairment, compensatory activities are focused on early intervention and diagnosis combined with a programme for the development of visual skills, especially in public schools, where importance is attached to educational success and the development of individual personality traits, as well as adapting the support, rehabilitation and education programme to the person with special educational needs. The challenges of cooperation with a visually impaired student are related to the equaling of educational opportunities, combining theoretical content with practical action, searching for programmes, the use of technology and communication (TiK), and working with the child’s resources. Vision impairments affect school difficulties in the cognitive, social, emotional, volitional and physical field. The unadjusted refractive defect (especially hyperopia) and weakened binocular vision contribute to creating an individual model of working with the child with visual impairment. The presented case study shows supporting and therapeutic actions, with emphasis on the use of solution-oriented therapy.

Author(s): János Timár / Language(s): Hungarian Issue: 26/2014

Media education is a rapidly developing new field at the crossroads of psychology, sociology, pedagogy, media research and media theory. It is based on the idea that children’s education is not possible without the knowledge and understanding of their media environment. The basic objective of media education is the development of media literacy. In the process of becoming a social person with self-reliance, it is an important aspect to not only gain an understanding of, but also be able to use media actively and consciously. Developing media literacy is integrated with the education of democratic values. Education package, MOPED, offers a program for early childhood (ages 5–11) media pedagogy, based on the methods of experiential education, which develops skills through experience.

A PERSPECTIVE OF STUDENTS ON FEEDBACK IN ONLINE EDUCATION

A PERSPECTIVE OF STUDENTS ON FEEDBACK IN ONLINE EDUCATION

Author(s): Daniela Căprioară,Virgil Frunză / Language(s): English Issue: 01/2021

Feedback is undoubtedly a very important element in the general structure of the training and learning process, the peremptory proof of importance being the principle of feedback or reverse connection, listed in the current pedagogical or didactic literature. Efficient use of feedback in teaching-learning activity is conditioned by a series of variables, among which are found the elements of specificity, the functions of feedback, its forms and, last but not least, the concrete means by which it can be achieved. The pandemic context generates the problem of a paradigm shift in terms of feedback management, a rethinking and a repositioning of it in the general configuration of the training and learning process. In other words, they need to be reviewed. The main question that formed the basis of this study is: What is the students' perception of the feedback, both in terms of personal experience, but also that of the training specialist for the teaching profession? To formulate an answer to this question, a questionnaire was applied to a group of 80 students from the Pedagogy of Primary and Preschool Education program. Years 2 and 3 were selected, for two reasons: on the one hand, to have a psycho-pedagogical knowledge base that would allow them to formulate pertinent opinions and, on the other hand, to have a comparative reference, having in view that they have completed at least one semester of university studies in face-to-face education. The results show that students' perceptions of feedback in online education are relatively different.

A practical use of the random alternating treatments design as a package to increase compliant behavior in preschool children

A practical use of the random alternating treatments design as a package to increase compliant behavior in preschool children

Author(s): Jennifer L. Lambert,Cheryl A. Young-Pelton / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2021

Teachers of preschool-aged children (3 – 5 years old) are often concerned when children without previous experience attending school, display serious noncompliant behavior. In this study, antecedent interventions to increase compliance were examined and compared using a single case experimental design known as random alternating treatments. The conditions were advance notice, behavioral momentum, and task-choice. During intervention 1, the child displayed a high percentage of noncompliant behaviors indicating the need for increased proximity, eye contact and stating his name prior to making a request. These antecedent modifications were applied to all conditions during intervention 2, with an immediate increase in compliance. A generalization phase was included to test these antecedent modifications among additional staff, which resulted in continued compliance. For this participant, the task-choice condition was most effective. This study demonstrated the feasibility and practicality of the random alternating treatments design as an efficient tool to determine response to intervention during the pre-referral process to special education, eliminating over-identification of children with behavioral concerns.

A Research on Schools as Learning Organizations: A Theoretical Approach

A Research on Schools as Learning Organizations: A Theoretical Approach

Author(s): Gabriela Alina Paraschiva,Anca Draghici,Constanţa-Valentina Mihăilă / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2019

Due to the growing pressures on the educational area to provide young people with the knowledge and skills needed to live and work in a constantly changing society and the technologies and trades that today do not exist, the model of learning organization has been extended to schools, as an attempt to re-conceptualize them from organizations that are traditionally linked to the learning and knowledge process to organizations that are capable of responding with efficiency to uncertain and dynamic environments. The purpose of this paper is to identify the state of affairs in the Romanian educational system (pre-university level) in order to provide a starting point for the implementation of the ‘school as a learning organization’ concept and model. The approach is theoretical, using desk research of regulations and data regarding the public expenditure in education, per capita funding, number of pupils enrolled, PISA results and correlations between the action-oriented dimensions (including their key characteristics/elements) of the model proposed by Kools & Stoll (2017) and the performance indicators (including descriptors) that are used at the Romanian national level. Results show that, between 2009 and 2018, school organizations were under increasing pressure and the implementation of this concept and model at system level could be an opportunity to focus on students from the organizational side, having the determined correlations as a foundation.

A TWO-POINT STUDY OF PARENTAL PERCEPTION OF DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY IN CROATIAN PRESCHOOL CHILDREN

Author(s): Marina Kotrla Topić,Marina Perković Kovačević,Ivana Duvnjak / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2019

To get a better understanding o/ the parental perception of digital devices used by preschool children in Croatia, as well as their expectations and mediation strategies, we report the findings from a qualitative study with two measurement points. At the first point, five families with children aged 6 to 7 were interviewed at their homes, where they provided information on how their children engage with new technologies, how such technologies are perceived "by different family members and how parents manage their children's use of digital technology. A year and a half later, the same families were interviewed again, in a similar manner, focusing on the changes which happened in that period, as reported by the parents. Results show that parents find digital technology important and beneficial for children's cognitive and emotional development, but they fear possible negative consequences of its use. Most often, they use restrictive mediation. A year and a 'half later, parents also express the need for more educational support when it comes to mediating their children's interaction with digital technology.

ABORDĂRI CONCEPTUALE ASUPRA ETAPELOR DE CREȘTERE ȘI DEZVOLTARE LA COPII

Author(s): Victoria Tira / Language(s): Romanian Publication Year: 0

The study of young child growth and development has sparked interest since ancient times, and today developmental psychology offers stage models of child development and how motor, volitional, and affective capacities are developed. The process of growth and development at children has a stage course and the complexity and peculiarities of each stage are exploited. Moreover, the new theories on child development describe that each stage of development has particularities, factors and relationships that reach a special, non-linear psychodynamic in which life events, the child's abilities and socio-emotional support are in a relationship of confluence. The study of stadial development in children allows, among other things, the identification of some types of relationships and activities observable both in the family environment and in the educational, school environment. In this context, the stage conceptions from developmental psychology also highlights the role of socio-emotional development in children as well as its stimulation according to its inter-individual characteristics

Adapting to a new education era: overcoming challenges in preschool education during pandemic times

Adapting to a new education era: overcoming challenges in preschool education during pandemic times

Author(s): Elena Marin / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2022

The art of teaching consists in adapting the structures, contents, teaching strategies, classroom management issues, as well as managing the conditions imposed by the contemporary contexts of society, the constant adaptation of the strategies, used by the teacher, to the needs of the children, while trying to find a balance between the traditional training method and the use of technology. The challenges brought by the context of the last years, in terms of the protection and safety of our health due to the COVID 19 pandemic, have put the education system to the test from all points of view: from a technological point of view, the lack or poor training of teachers in terms of digital competences, the poor functionality of certain school platforms used, etc. However, teachers have implemented ideas that give value to the teaching act, by reinventing themselves, striving to find innovative solutions so that the teaching activities can continue to take place. The aim of this paper is to identify the biggest challenges faced by Romanian teachers in preschool education in the pandemic context, understanding how they managed to adapt and what solutions they found and applied for carrying out the teaching activity. In this respect a questionnaire was developed and distributed among pre-school teachers during November2021 – January 2022. The results of the research identified a series of difficulties faced by the participants, generated by a multitude of elements such as: lack of technological equipment, low digital skills, difficulties in organizing and supporting the learning activity. An essential aspect regarding the online teaching activity with kindergarten children was the reluctance and non-involvement of parents, many parents not agreeing with the use of the computer and the internet for a long time.

ADVANCED THEORY OF MIND AND EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONS DURING MIDDLE CHILDHOOD

ADVANCED THEORY OF MIND AND EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONS DURING MIDDLE CHILDHOOD

Author(s): Melania Moldovan,Andra Diana Coman,Laura Visu-Petra / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2022

The understanding of the mind and its relation with cognitive abilities during middle childhood is still limited. One dimension of it, the interpretive diversity understanding, represents an understanding that people can have different interpretations of the same situation due to differences in their beliefs, attitudes, and knowledge. We aim to investigate, for the first time in literature, three dimensions of advanced theory of mind (ToM): faux-pas understanding, strange stories and interpretive ToM, in relation with executive functions (working memory, inhibition and switching), in an emotional framework (anxiety symptoms) during middle childhood (9-12 years). Results revealed that the three ToM abilities did not correlate with each other, and only strange stories correlated with inhibition and switching. On the other hand, the total ToM score based on the three measures was predicted by working memory and comprehension. These results support the approach to ToM as a non-coherent construct in middle childhood, and the need for further research that looks at the subdimensions included under the executive functions and ToM umbrella. Understanding the relationship between ToM dimensions, as well their interdependence with executive functions is essential for preventing early social and cognitive difficulties during middle childhood.
