Przestrzenie muzyczne w polskim teatrze współczesnym

The main aim of the book Musical Spaces in Contemporary Polish Theatre is to present the various functions of music in Polish dramatic theatre and also to demonstrate the ways in which contemporary Polish theatre directors ‘shape’ the sound layer in their performances. Concurrently, the author discusses two methodologies which can be used to analyse and describe theatre music. These two complementary methodologies are the semiotics and the performative aesthetics.The monograph explores the numerous relationships between music and other elements of the mise-en-scene, including scenography, actor’s body (acting and movement) and stage lighting. However, the main focus is the relation between music and theatrical fiction. The particular chapters are connected to each other by the ‘musical space’ category which should be defined as a specific way of shaping the sound landscape in a performance.The subject of the publication involves a variety of theoretical issues such as perception of music in dramatic theatre, classification of the theatre sounds, types of musical meanings, and also the influence of technology on the sound production. All these questions are considered with regard to particular Polish performances which have been produced in the last 25 years – especially the works of Jerzy Jarocki, Jerzy Grzegorzewski, Krystian Lupa, Andrzej Dziuk,Krzysztof Warlikowski and Jan Klata.

The author of the present book reveals the importance and complexity of problems and challenges resulting from the introduction of a new function into an architectural object, when the latter constitutes a part of important cultural heritage. The modern phenomenon of adaptation to a new function has been shown on the one hand as a consequence of the shifting perception of heritage and its protection, and on the other – as an important factor stimulating changes, transformations and redefinitions, not only at the level of interfering with the integrity of material substance, but also in reference to the role of heritage in the social and cultural significance of contemporary cities. The scale of this phenomenon and its impact on the current and future appearance of cities, as well as whether or not the next generations will be able to read the original meaning of its architectural heritage, vital both for the city and its culture, makes these issues particularly interesting today.

Powojenna twórczość pomnikowa Xawerego Dunikowskiego 1945–1964

The study of „Post–war monumental work of Xawery Dunikowski 1945-1964’’ analyses complex issues of late monumental art of this doyen of native sculpture, the process of its formation in reality of a Polish communist state, as well as formal and thematic quality. The monographic presentation of three main works: Monument to the Uprising on St. Anna’s Mountain (1946-1955), Monument to the Liberation of the Warmia and Mazury Region in Olsztyn (1949-1954) and designs for the Monument to the Heroes of Warsaw (1956-1958), it completes a panoramic overview of his other monuments from that time. A multi-aspect look at Dunikowski’s final monumental creation does not offer unequivocal answers, but a rich overview of this diverse art of the authorship of the outstanding personality of a multi-epochal artist. The dissertation reminds about this unique creation, it describes its precisely, contextualizes and reinterprets.

The publication entitled The Memory of Time – Painting in the Time of Spiritual Bankruptcy includes over 50 essays pondering various issues of contemporary art in the context of my own experience as a painter, in addition to comments and reflections pertaining to variegated creation-related notions revealed in the course of creative processes during my artistic activity. The analysis of the so-called creative programme of particular painting series: Fantomanie, Kosmogonie, Księga Słońca, Głowy, Rytmy Pamięci, Ogrody Ciemności, Baśniowe Fantazje, Wirtualne Ikony is an attempt to present and describe ideas- and themes-related assumptions of individual artistic productions, as well as to specify the character of their painting language that would correspond to the content and idea expressed by them. Another part of the publication consists of illustrative material – photographs documenting particular works of painting created throughout the 40-year period of my artistic activity. The texts and paintings documentation compose a consistent whole, while the truth and authenticity of individual authorial experience of painting add credibility and substance to the content of the essays. What is pivotal idea here and what constitutes the kernel of both theoretical part (essays, comments) and illustrative material is an attempt at presenting the dramatic withdrawal, atrophy, one may even say bankruptcy of experiencing spiritual space, which is palpable in productions of socalled contemporary art. Philosophical considerations, reflections of such authors as Plato, Saint Augustin, Pseudo-Dionysius, Robert Grosseteste, Saint Bonaventura, or Meister Eckhart referring to the activity in the realm of art, seem today so distant and so unfitting the contemporary mental space, that the awareness of cultural crisis, of disappearing elementary reference points become a dramatic sign of the nowadays cultural disintegration. Within this shattered, fragmented space my painting activity externalizes the voice of a human individual searching for those ignored, unwanted, omitted spiritual spaces, the traces of understanding with great artistic tradition, with efforts of many old masters who wrote, but also materialized through art their great intentions, ideas, creative plans.

The book entitled A document and artistic creation as mutually complementary forms of depicting reality is a collection of authorial texts which in a different and multifaceted way deal with the universal and still troubling relation between a document and creation, signalling at the same time various understandings of these notions. It presents to readers, especially to those interested in contemporary art, up-to-date theoretical considerations and unique effects of artistic activities, both particularly focused on the analysis of documentary and creative specificity of photography but also on other artistic disciplines, including the current heterogeneous post-media art.

Wybrane konteksty współczesnej fotografii w Polsce 1947–2017

In its essence, photography is a process upon which an image is conjured up by an object itself, namely, through the way light acts on a given photosensitive object. Yet, photography is also a discipline of humanities that for a dozen or so decades has been developing various techniques and technologies, styles and tendencies. In this day and age photography is virtually omnipresent. Therefore, we experience manifold orders, manners in which photographic images are circulated, while we interact with different screens, read printed dailies, leaf through photo albums, catalogues, or wander through galeries and museums. The present publication attempts to reference selected notions relating to artistic photography in Poland. The authors come from various photograhy-related research backgrounds; they are both theoreticians and practicioners, which results in a quite comprehensive and multifaceted presentation of photographic works in Poland. The paramount aim of our monograph is to elucidate some apects pertaining to the medium of photography in Poland between 1947 and 2017, that have come to our attention. The book creates the tapestry of selected events, facts, activities, personalities, and tendencies, which transpired over the course of seven decades since the year 1947. The subsequent texts build a bridge of sorts between the activities of the pre-World War Two association called Fotoklub Polski (the Polish Photoclub), its co-founder’s, Jan Bułhak’s, organizational endeavours, and the activities of ZPAF (Association of Polish Art Photographers), also including some intermediate phenomena in photography during the late 1960s and early 70s, the works of idiosyncratic artists, such as: Andrzej Różycki, Zygmunt Rytka, Stefan Wojnecki, and Zbigniew Dłubak, as well as reportage photography in Upper Silesia, exhibitions by the Extravagance Gallery in the Sosnowiec Centre for Art – Sielecki Castle, open-air photography as a form of encounter, and the video recording as a photographer’s portrait.The publication is addressed to students of arts who work with photographic medium both in practical capacity and as a research subject.

One of the chapters is devoted to the individual conditions and urban planning of the University of Warsaw. The chapters on spatial design standards were inspired by the experiences of the Office of Innovations in the Academic Space of the University of Warsaw.

Msza Es-dur na sopran solo, chór mieszany i orkiestrę dętą

Mass in E-flat major for soprano solo, mixed choir and wind orchestra is a novelty in Polish wind orchestra repertoire. It’s also the first time the composer has employed this form. Our country’s repertoire for wind orchestras has widened its scope, which is a positive aspect of the cultural activity of such bands, and the composition in question might contribute to this phenomenon. The work comprises of sections corresponding to the Catholic liturgy: Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus, Agnus Dei, and each of them contains classical Latin texts. The work embraces the whole gamut of sounds – both orchestral and choral – and exposes the vocals of the soloist.

The author describes new technologies used in public participation process and the interdependence between data and their application in spatial planning and the idea of a smart city. She analyses the procedural model of using data, defines a new approach to planning, known as e-participation in planning. She also shows types of spatial data, which can be used at various stages of preparing the local land use plan. Stefania Zahorska

In the vast and varied output of Stefania Zahorska (1889-1961), including literary activity, reportage, publications on art history, philosophy, literature, sociology..., theoretical and critical reflection on film occupies a prominent place. She continued to write about film from 1927 almost until the end of her life; her last film review, published in London, was dated 1953. Stefania Zahorska was the most outstanding film critic of the interwar period in Poland. This was due not only to her literary and critical talent, independence and uncompromising judgements, but above all, to her erudition, extensive and in-depth education. When analysing a film, she saw much more than just the image on the screen. For over ten years, she was a regular reviewer for "Wiadomości Literackie" [Literary Matters], reviewing over 500 films. She also introduced film issues to many other socio-cultural and literary magazines. She was also interested in analysing film at an academic level, as evidenced by her speech at the 1927 Congress of Philosophy in Warsaw. As a lecturer (from 1921) at the Free Polish University (Wolna Wszechnica Polska), she introduced film into the programme of lectures on art. Her commitment to teaching is clearly visible in those of her texts in which she introduces the reader to issues such as the film avant-garde. Later on in her life, she wrote film reviews for the Polish émigré press in Paris and London. This critical edition of all of Stefania Zahorska's extremely valuable works on film, reveals her extremely modern way of looking at film as a work of art, which, as the author of reviews, analyses and essays, and even intervention materials, she sees in the broad social, cultural and political contexts of a quarter of a century of Polish culture both at home and abroad.

Nie będzie przesadą stwierdzenie, że dla wielu osób pierwszy kontakt z wiedzą o filmie następował dzięki publikacjom Jerzego Płażewskiego. O dziejach kina uczyliśmy się z jego Historii filmu dla każdego (jej tytuł zmieniał się w kolejnych wydaniach), dzięki wcześniejszej książce poznawaliśmy Język filmu. Tysiące obejrzanych filmów, nieprawdopodobna wręcz liczba tekstów (publikował przez prawie 70 lat!): książek, recenzji, korespondencji z międzynarodowych festiwali, których był stałym bywalcem, artykułów narzucających niekiedy sposób myślenia o kinie, prowadzenie Kina Dobrych Filmów „Wiedza” w warszawskim Pałacu Kultury i Nauki, wreszcie wieloletnie członkostwo w Filmowej Radzie Repertuarowej przy Centrali Wynajmu Filmów – wszystko to miało niewątpliwy wpływ na świadomość filmową kilku pokoleń polskich kinomanów. Bycie krytykiem nie oznaczało dla niego jedynie określenia dotyczącego zawodu, który wykonywał. Stanowiło sposób życia, które przepełniała ciekawość kina oraz przekonanie o jego doniosłej roli jako sztuki.Kolejne tomy serii dotyczyć będą innych ważnych dla polskiej krytyki filmowej postaci, m.in. Krzysztofa Teodora Toeplitza, Bolesława Michałka, Zygmunta Kałużyńskiego. Zamiarem redaktorów jest naszkicowanie obrazu krytyki oraz zrekonstruowanie roli, jaką niegdyś odgrywała. Być może okaże się to pomocne dla podjęcia dyskusji o specyfice, funkcji, a nawet zasadności istnienia krytyki filmowej w dzisiejszej rzeczywistości. Barbara Giza i Piotr Zwierzchowski

Jan Sztwiertnia (1911–1940) Człowiek i dzieło w setną rocznicę urodzin

The work is devoted to life and works by Jan Sztwiertnia (1911–1940), a composer,organist, conductor and teacher from Wisła. The very artist died at the age of 29 in theconcentration camp in Gusen, being at the edge of his career and having a composerscholarship by famous musicians in Paris for granted. An artistic value of his works washighly valued many a time not only in a regional dimension. The centenary of his birthdayin 2011 has become a pretext to organize many concerts, exhibitions and meetings.Also the publication in question is anniversary in nature as its aim is to recall the personof the musician slightly forgotten these days. The research on his life and artistic activityhave been conducted for several years in the Institute of Music at the University of Silesiain Cieszyn. The authors of particular articles in this book are people popularizing thecomposer’s works through their activity, making attempts to ascribe a fixed place in thehistory of the Polish music culture to him.
