CRIME GENRES AND THE MODERN-POSTMODERN TURN: CANONS, GENDER, MEDIA

Author(s): Andrea Virginás / Language(s): English

The grand narrative of the turn from the modern to the postmodern has profoundly shaped Anglo-American thought on art history, literary and film history in the last three decades. The identification of postmodern qualities - contrasted with the canonized modern features - has set the agenda for Ihab Hassan, Fredric Jameson, Brian McHale or even Arthur C. Danto, to name but a few critics. Postmodernism has often been seen as the process whereby modernist high artistic and mass cultural practices are being analyzed, mimicked, and ironized, thus becoming the material of self-conscious artistic preoccupations in different media.

Author(s): Antoni Ziemba / Language(s): Polish

This volume offers a new interpretation of the Netherlandish and North European art of 15th century, presenting it as a mix of objects-things that affect the receiver in a defined – material and spatial – way. It analyzes the objects of macroscale that impose the movement on the viewer, and the ones of microscale that encourage to manipulate themselves. The author searches for the „agency of things”, i.e. for evoking defined behaviours – liturgical, devotional, propaganda-political or establishing the social status of the object owner – that once contributed to the network of material and spiritual culture. Third of three volumes presenting the synthesis of the artistic culture in an important region of old Europe, written by the expert on the subject. The series can be read as a thorough analysis for the specialists, as a coursebook for the students and as an interesting book for the wider public.

Modernizm między budynkami

Author(s): Agnieszka Kępkowicz,Małgorzata Sosnowska,Ilona Woźniak-Kostecka / Language(s): Polish

A contemporary look at modernism from the perspective of landscape architecture, superbly illustrated. The authors describe modernism considering its today’s viewers: theoreticians, architects and students who create space as well as the “consumers” of modernist cities, districts and housing estates, pointing at the relative ambiguity of the phenomenon. They also attempt to answer the question concerning the future of modernism. The aim of the conducted research was to show – in the context of contemporary reception of modernism – its ideas, forms and meaning which can be of use in creating the optimal space between buildings. The authors employed various research methods, used in landscape architecture, urbanism, environmental psychology, sociology, art, social communication and media.

Sztuka jako interpretacja. Z problemów dyskursu artystycznego

Author(s): Ryszard Solik / Language(s): Polish

A standpoint presented in the book questioning an objectivist-essentialist understandingof a work of art typical of a formalist and modernist aesthetics. At thesame time, it criticizes autonomy, closeness and stable definition of an artistic production, and, independence from the context and receivers. “A myth of a work ofart for its own sake”, allegedly able to self-define its specificity and identity thanksto substantiality, was replaced with a perspective of contextual entanglements, inthe structure of which “artisticness” is being negotiated and construed, and notdefinitely defined and fixed. As a result, interpretative practices and discursiveprocedures constitute the centre of proposed considerations. This is a consequenceof the assumption that they constitute not only the context co-deciding about theexperience of art, but the substantial way of concretization of a work of art in thecultural reality. A constituting dimension of interpretation is thus connected withnot only the newest projects and enterprises, often of a “hesitant identity” requiringa comment and absorbing context resources, but an art as such, independently ofthe shape and type of its historical manifestations. Thus, art cannot exist for itsown sake, but only through its interpretations.

Author(s): Agata Jakubowska / Language(s): Polish

The author analyses female experience, present in Maria Pinińska-Bereś’ works, as connected with the processes taking place in socialist Poland: the development of sex knowledge and counselling, the strong influence of Catholic Church, counter-culture groups, socialist consumerism, the changing erotic iconosphere and the ideas of the second wave of feminism coming from the other side of the Iron Curtain. The analysis of the relationship between them and the works of the artist allows us to perceive and understand the local context of her feminist works and the elements which favoured and hindered their development.

A MŰVÉSZETI ÚTKERESÉS VÁLTOZATAI A ROMÁNIAI MAGYAR IDŐSZAKI SAJTÓBAN (1965–1975)

Author(s): Zsuzsanna Szuszámi / Language(s): Hungarian

My book follows the endeavours and path seeking in fine arts between 1965 and 1975 as reflected in the contemporary press, more specifically in the most important cultural magazines of the age, namely in the weekly publication Utunk, as well as in Korunk and Igaz Szó. The other main area of this book is the evolution of fine arts criticism in these magazines. As a result, the research contains an analysis of the mode of communication after 1965 and discusses how the fine arts content started becoming increasingly free in the above publications, which years saw the publication of the most fine arts-related writings, and, finally, how the slogans and obligatory content praising the party and the system found their way into the publications again after 1972. The book is followed by an Annex, containing four interviews made with Zoltán Banner, the period’s editor of the arts column of Utunk, Lajos Kántor, the period’s columnist at Korunk, and Zsolt Gálfalvi, the period’s assistant editor at Igaz Szó. The interviews complement the image of the age at the level of oral history, but they also contain important data regarding the press of the time.

Microphone Techniques In Stereo And Surround Recording

Author(s): Adam Rosiński / Language(s): English

Sound engineering is one of the fastest-growing branches of music production. The need for a broad-based discussion on the issues constituting the art of sound engineering persists and loses none of its relevance, revealing that sound engineering should not be investigated only in the mathematical and physical context (musical acoustics) or the engineering aspect (signal processing and modification).Publications targeted primarily at musicians are few and far between, which is why the mutual understanding for different priorities which effectively concern the same issues faced by the engineer, the acoustician and the musician, seems to be a complex problem and the main concept explored in this publication. This book is intended for musicians or sound directors, but also acousticians and sound engineers wishing to learn how the musicians think. The monograph is also addressed to musicians who intend to record their material in the studio in the near future, but do not possess knowledge on studio construction, studio workflow or the art of recording. It seems important to familiarize the musicians with the reality that awaits them on the other side of the glass, thus fostering their responsibility for the work jointly produced by them – entering the studio – and the sound director.

Wyobraźnia. Sztuka i design

Author(s): Alicja Głutkowska-Polniak / Language(s): Polish

The book is an analysis of the conceptions of imagination (in aesthetic theories) that havestill been inspiring and become important for the history of the philosophy of art, and are beinginterpreted anew. It determined the choice of (representative) philosophers and their works, staring from Kant who gave art autonomy (and an important role of imagination). These are alsotheories that could inspire an interpretation of artistic practices (especially the modern ones),and designer ones, as well as show their specificity. The author shows how imagination in variousconceptions (chosen because of different assumptions in which it is still imagination that isimportant) supports art, and even conditions it. Thus, she goes through various characteristicphilosophical-aesthetic conceptions of imagination, chosen also in order to present imaginationin its multidimensionality and multifacetedness. Such a horizon allows for considering thiscategory in a broad way, and showing its co-actions with many mental dispositions, as well as itsinfluence on mental processes and reality, especially in terms of art and design. The theories of imagination within the scope of the philosophy of art and aesthetics inquestion show the unchangeability of the functioning of this category, naming imagination, onthe one hand, and, its evolution on the other. Imagination evolved out of capturing and matchingsensual forms, to notional and abstract forms. In this sense it broadened the scope of its activity. From supporting contemplation it changed into co-creating involvement. Thus, imagination hasa big potential, and can co-work with senses and mind. The aspects concerning imagination have been divided into two parts mainly to showa dissonance of power as well as function that imagination is in reference to the category ofsubjectivity. It means its source and application that can influence consciousness and co-workwith it or be dependent on unconscious aims. In both cases the role of imagination is to createeither an image alone without a real reference or a given real subject.A motif combining the two parts is yet another function or imagination disposition, i.e. acreating function. The very disposition, in an aesthetic dimension, is reflected and manifestedin arts (from fine to modern ones). It is imagination co-creating „cultural objects”, subjects(phenomena and situations) of an artistic and often aesthetic value. This capability in reference tomodern times is referred to in the last „stop” of this book concerning new perspectives in creatingart and design in the twentieth century, i.e. the so called modern arts.

Dziwniejsze niż fikcja. Rola wyobraźni w filmach Marca Forstera

Author(s): Magdalena Kempna-Pieniążek / Language(s): Polish

The book was devoted to the place Marc Forster’s output is given in the categoryof imagination. In the first part the author outlines the most important theoriesof imagination, starting from the ancient conceptions and phenomenology to contemporaryphilosophy and film thought. When discussing the opinions of suchresearchers as Gaston Bachelard, Jean-Paul Sartre, Hanna Segal, Paul Ricoeur,Edgar Morin and Gilles Deleuze conclusion on a multidimensional understandingof this problem and its entanglement into contemporary redefinitions of suchcategories as memory can be drawn. The second part of the book constitutes a collection of analyses of Marc Forster’smovies (Finding Neverland, Stay, Stranger than Fiction, The Kite Runner, Monster’s Ball,Quantum of Solace). The author presents the levels on which the concept of imaginationunderstood as a psychological, aesthetic or philosophical , and, above all, anthropological category appears in director’s works in five subsequent scenes. In her interpretations, she makes use of different research tools, including, RenéGirard’s or Roland Barthes’ theories. She also refers to, among others, the problemsof movie authorships, postmodern movie, contemporary collections of phantasms, and the occurrence of mythic structures in pop culture at the turn of the 20th and21st centuries. Although the most popular Forster’s works constitute the core issue, the author also touches upon his less known projects, such as a debuting movieEverything Put Together or a commercial LX Forty. Conclusions from the analyses conducted, included in the book, correspondwith the latest theories of imagination. In the light of Forster’s works imaginationpresents itself as a category tightly connected with memory, identity or subjectivity

Zanikanie i istnienie niepełne. W labiryntach romantycznej i współczesnej podmiotowości

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

Zanikanie i istnienie niepełne. Większość tekstów można włączyć do radykalnej linii refleksji dotyczącej problemu podmiotowości odkrywającej wewnątrz siebie stratę, eksponującej własną niepełność i brak. W książce można wyróżnić trzy główne linie rozważań – ekspozycje podmiotowości późnego romantyzmu, wysokiego modernizmu i ponowoczesności. Romantyzm, szczególnie okres kryzysu romantycznego „ja”, stanowi niejako „arche” nowoczesnego podmiotu. Zanikanie, brak kompletnych realizacji, migotanie podmiotowości stanowią wyłaniającą się z książki tezę dotyczącą granicznych przejawów obecności „ja” w perspektywie „trzech czasów”: romantyzmu, modernizmu i ponowoczesności. Tom zbiera artykuły badaczy z Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, Uniwersytetu Kardynała Stanisława Wyszyńskiego, Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego i Uniwersytetu Śląskiego.
