Греческие корни в лексическом составе русского и польского языков (семантический, словообразовательно-морфологический и стилистический аспекты)

Author(s): Maciej Walczak / Language(s): Russian

The object of research in the following work are the autonomous lexical units (for instance: dramat, estetyka, technika, technologia, energia, energetyka, etc. with their derivatives) and the root morphemes borrowed from the Greek language (bio-, cyber-, eko-, ekono-, elektro-, and mega-) in the structure of selected parts of speech in Polish and Russian. The object of analysis are semantic, morphological-derivational and stylistic features of these parts of speech in the Polish-Russian confrontation. The choice of the research subject was dictated by the need to describe in detail a selected fragment of lexis of related languages with regard to the influence of foreign elements on their vocabulary, and furthermore, their evolution and expansion into other areas of the linguistic system. This choice is even more justified regarding the lack of specific Polish-Russian studies on the subject (with an emphasis on the most recent phenomena in both languages). The existing and quite extensive literature discussed in chapter one allows us to draw the conclusion that borrowings were first and foremost studied as lexical phenomena. These issues were also often analysed in terms of the word formation, morphology and adaptation processes of the foreign elements. The questions of borrowings in phraseology and dialectology have been described to a lesser extent. It should be noted that the borrowings from Greek constitute quite a large body in the lexis of the Russian language. Therefore, they have been more thoroughly and broadly reflected in Russian linguistic literature than in Polish. Moreover, different methods were applied for the analysis of the borrowings, as well as not always coinciding typologies and classifications. In chapter two of the following dissertation, we managed to discover, unlike analogical comparative studies, the potential conceptual mechanisms affecting the synonymy of the foreign morphemes (mega-, super, hiper- and ekstra-) not only with their native counterparts, but also with other evaluative phrases (mainly positive). It seems that we have also explained the question of collocations, in both languages, of the lexoid mega- with appropriate nouns (against the background of Greek). These collocations may stem from its two established main meanings vectorial and scalar, depending on whether it collocates with a concrete or abstract noun. The vectorial meaning is hereby understood as a feature related to space, that is as size oriented horizontally (length, width) and vertically (height), like mega bluza, mega kolczyki; мега сборник, мега карандаш. The scalar meaning, on the other hand, is interpreted as a feature manifesting itself through intensity (for example mega energia, mega masa, and mega moc). Furthermore, in this chapter, we have proposed a classification of lexemes with morphemes of our interest according to meaning (e.g. in different contexts, the adjective электронный / elektroniczny can be interpreted as: 1.‘Internet’; 2. ‘virtual’ – that is materially nonexistent; 3. ‘computer’; 4. ‘related to electronics’ – а) ‘a field of science’, b) ‘equipment’. In addition, semantic parallelisms have been indicated between the parts of speech containing the discussed morphemes and the lexemes regarded as their synonyms (e.g. экологичный / ekologiczny = зелёный / zielony) or antonyms (e.g. Polish eko- ≠ techno-).

Wczesne dzieje Słowian w świetle ich języka (wyd. 3)

Author(s): Hanna Popowska-Taborska / Language(s): Polish

In this work, consisting of 7 chapters (I. An outline of the early history of linguistic researches on the ethnogenesis of the Slavs; II. Linguistics and other disciplines conducting researches on the early history of the Slavs; III. The hydronymic aspect of research on the ethnogenesis of the Slavs; IV. Slavic ethnonyms and anthroponyms; V. The phonetic differentiation of Slavic; VI. The role of vocabulary in research on the ethnogenesis of the Slavs; VII. The stages preceding the historical past of the Slavs), various theories and hypotheses based on linguistic facts and connected with the ethnogenesis of the Slavs are presented and analysed. The final conclusions based on the research could be stated as follows: The Slavs broke away from the great Proto-Indo-European family; on the basis of linguistic facts we cannot, however, situate their original homeland without some hesitation, nor do we know exactly how the process of differentiation took place and in what way the various language groups emerged. There exist many Balto-Slavic linguistic connections that point to a close or common development of these two language groups. However, on the basis of linguistic facts alone, it is difficult to determine the location of the original homeland of the Slavs and Balts. At some point these two ethnic groups separated; we cannot, however, state the reason for this break, nor what factors brought about the development of linguistically distinct Slavic. From the linguistic data one can assume that at an earlier points in history there existed contacts between Slavic, Italic and Germanic languages, but where and when it occurred has until now not been thoroughly explained. The presence of Celtic traces in the Slavic languages, which has been variously interpreted (some linguists maintain that in the remote past the Slavs could have been in contact with the Celts) could be analysed only with difficulty since knowledge about Celtic dialects is scarce. There undoubtedly existed some Slavic-Iranian connections, but it is difficult at present to determine the scale and character of these contacts. Further studies in this field are recommended. In the case of contacts between the Slavs and Germans it is very important to draw up a detailed chronological chart of the various phases of the contacts. Here linguists encounter great problems owing to a lack of sufficient criteria to separate the Gothic from the Proto-German linguistic layer. At present we are not in a position to determine unequivocally the location of early Slav homelands either in the light of hydronyms, or through the analysis of Slavic ethnonyms or botanical and zoological terminology, or on the basis of contemporary lexical divisions. We do know that the real Slavs, not the supposed ones, appear on the historical stage in the sixth century A. D., whereas the reconstruction of the early Slavic phonetic and morphological system points to the extreme uniformity of the Proto-Slavic language. On the basis of various data, one can thus maintain that the phonetic differentiation of the Slavic language occurred in the second half of the first millenium A. D., when the Slavs suddenly began to expand, occupying sizeable areas of southern, north-eastern and north-western Europe. One can thus speak of a demographic explosion which in turn brought about an expansion of a Slavic ethnos formerly centered on a much smaller area. Pre- and post-war researches have proposed whole range of solutions to the difficult problem of Slavic ethnogenesis. The author of this work refrains from providing more detailed conclusions because she claims, on one hand none of the existing theories is convincing and on the other she is of the opinion that on the basis of the linguistic facts it is impossible to carry out a full reconstruction of the prehistory of the Slavs.

The Development of Words Across Centuries

Author(s): Mariola Jakubowicz / Language(s): English

The book deals with changes in words meanings – and especially, the regularities therein – as exemplified by selected Proto-Slavic-derived adjectives denoting human traits, whose semantic development has been analysed since their emergence in the Proto-Slavic period until today. The observed regularities served as the basis for an outline dictionary of semantic motivations, which might be useful when considering etymologies of other (not just Slavic) words from this conceptual field. The book features an extensive theoretical introduction, discussing: the rules of establishing meanings in a proto-language, works devoted to semantic reconstruction of languages, and parallels in semantic development.

Dynamika współczesnego słownictwa słowiańskiego w przestrzeni stylowo-funkcjonalnej

Author(s): / Language(s): Slovak,English,Bulgarian,Russian,Polish,Slovenian,Ukrainian,Belarusian,Greek, Modern (1453-)

This volume of studies by Polish and international linguists is devoted to changes in modern Slavic languages, which are especially noticeable in the spheres of vocabulary and word formation. Taking into consideration the stylistic and functional aspect of lexis development allows for a better understanding of the dynamics of language change and the efficacy of communicational acts. The purposeful and pragmatic character of communicational behaviour manifests itself widely in the social, political and cultural contexts considered by the Authors. The works comprising the volume are divided into three thematic sections: - Phenomena, processes and tendencies in the development of specialist lexis (terminology); - Word formation and lexical mechanisms dynamics; - Lexical change in modern language communication and discourse. The sections help organize the volume by highlighting the dominant theme in particular texts. The scopes of the sections are, nevertheless, not sharply delineated – each section is to an equal extent devoted to the complex and multifaceted subject-matter of the tendencies and changes in modern Slavic vocabulary. Most of the works comprised in the volume adopt a contrastive approach, the remaining ones can serve as bases for contrastive studies. The text analyse the rich material of the Slavic languages – Polish, Czech, Slovak, Belarusian, Russian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian and Slovene – as well as of other languages, like Modern Greek.

The volume constitutes the gleanings of the 1st Congress of the Historians of (a) Language which was held in Katowice. The purpose of this scholarly meeting was to present the scholarly accomplishments of historical linguistics which were achieved heretofore and to present the most important research plans of the discipline. Almost 150 scholars who represent this field participated in the Congress. The participants engaged various themes which arranged themselves in the following subject blocks: I. The methodological dilemmas of modern diachronic linguistics II. Historical-linguistic research and the universal problems of linguistics III. The sources which are used in diachronic research IV. Lexicology and lexicography V. The regional Polish language and the dialects VI. Communication. Genology. Stylistics VII. The historical-linguistic knowledge in university education The volume features a very important supplement in the form of a transcript and a report of two panel discussions which focused on the following problems: 1. “The research and methodological challenges of historical linguistics”; 2. “The teaching-related tasks of historians in reference to the national communicative community in the past and in the present”. The opinions of the representatives of the scholarly community about the position of diachronic linguistics in linguistic research, the opinions about the fundamental problems and dilemmas are certainly relevant to all people who are interested in the progress of the research in (a) language. The value of the present volume is further enhanced by the last part which is devoted to the events which celebrated the conferring of the name of a distinguished linguist, Irena Bajerowa, to the Institute of the Polish Language of the University of Silesia. The opinions of the Friends, Family Members and the Students which were preserved represent the scholarly and, at the same time, the cordial nature of this significant event.

Kulturowe kody reklamy. Świat znaczeń w reklamie z perspektywy socjalizacji

The purpose of my dissertation is the reconstruction of socialization offer of advertising. The choice of this topic involves contemporary cultural transformations and results from observation that the process of entering an individual to society is more often accompanied by the media, and with the recognition that advertisement has a meaningful impact in today’s world – as the transfer of general social knowledge. These two concepts: socialization and advertising become description subject in the theoretical part of the thesis. Television has become an important factor of socialization, as the research indicates, which shows that the average nursery school child watches television up to three hours a day. Young viewers like to watch advertisments, they are also the extremely absorbent audience and prolong the existence of commercial messages, drawing from them inspiration for fun and for the children’s folklore. To evaluate the potential of the socialization of advertising, I analyse advertising spots broadcast on channel TVP ABC. Children as recipients of fables become here automatically receivers of many advertising messages. Arousing children’s interest advertising has the potential to shape the image of the world’s youngest viewers, providing knowledge about products, but also about values, stereotypes or social roles. In this way conceptualization of reality from advertisments can be internalized by the child audience. Advertising as a multicode, polisemiotic message, requires also multidimensional description. I am ordering the collected material using content analysis – taking into consideration the category of advertised products, as well as promoted in spots values and social roles in which the main ads character are being occupied. Then I am taking a closer look to the selected advertisement and doing their semiological analysis, to check how a single spots in its plots reproduce the social order and in what way modify it. Finally, I am studing advertising spoken texts, supporting with the concept of the Lublin school of ethnolinguistics, I am trying to reconstruct an linguistic picture of the world carried by the advertisements. Reconstruction of advertising socialization offer shows that advertising equates children recipient with an adult, presenting post consumption world where dreams are realized through loans. Picture of the social roles is filled with stereotypes, however, we can notice some elements of changes, ie. fathers taking care of children or active female character presented away from home. The meaning of advertisements creates three pragmatic areas: CONSUMPTION AREA, UNLIMITED POSSIBILITIES AREA and EXISTENCE AREA. The child learns from advertising texts that „new is better”, that it can do in life, whatever it wants, and, that life is inseparably connected with money, while home and family are disconnected.

Polska półka filmowa. Krótkometrażowe filmy aktorskie i animowane w nauczaniu języka polskiego jako obcego

Author(s): Justyna Hanna Budzik,Agnieszka Tambor / Language(s): Polish

The films that have been discussed in the present textbook contain a variety of linguistic and cultural values. We have offered short films, because due to their small volume they are suitable for use in their entirety in any kind of classroom activity. However, making a lesson more attractive is not the only function of the compilation of films that we have proposed – another one is to fill the gap existing in contemporary textbooks devoted to teaching Polish as a foreign language. The films covered in the book form a kind of a catalogue of pretexts for conversation on difficult topics, which are omitted by most textbooks. Cultural problems related to individual films are just one part of lesson units suggested. Apart from them, we also propose a set of various exercises developing all language skills which thematically match a specific movie. The basic aim of the textbook is the development of students’ communicative competence. The language levels have not been specified either in the lesson outlines or in the exercises. This has been done consciously and deliberately, in order to give the teacher or instructor the opportunity to adapt individual elements to the needs and interests of their group.

The monograph is a result of the conference meetings organized at the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences in 2016-2018 entitled "Modern systems of Slavic bibliographic information - today and tomorrow" and "Linguistics and Slavic bibliographic information systems - today and tomorrow". These meetings were devoted to problems occurring in such disciplines as information sciences, bibliology, linguistics and terminology. The participants of these meetings, the Authors of the texts, are researchers of Polish and foreign academic institutions, most of whom work within one of two Committees of the International Committee of Slavists: the Commission on Linguistic Bibliography and the Terminological Commission. The book includes theoretical and practical works. The common reference point of the monograph is the information retrieval system iSybislav that is in fact a digital bibliographic database, which presents contemporary achievements of world Slavic linguistics and is elaborated by an international team of linguists.

The set of problems engaged in the texts which are presented in the monograph reflects the multifariousness of research perspectives in modern Slavic linguistics with reference to both traditional and novel methodological approaches. The authors’ focus has to do with the problems of the description of the units of the Polish, Russian, Ukrainian, Czech and Croatian languages at the particular levels of these languages. The linguistic units are examined not only as elements of a system but also as components (which are varied genre-wise) of early and modern texts. Apart from the analyses which draw from structuralist traditions there are also ones in which linguistic phenomena are considered in a broad social-political-cultural context. The publication is a collection of pieces which are devoted both to one language as well as comparative studies: Polish-Russian, Polish-Czech, Polish-Croatian, Russian-Czech ones. There are also texts which are devoted to the problems of translatology. The broad range of problems which are engaged by the authors from Poland and beyond enables the reader to familiarise himself or herself with the areas and trends of work conducted by the particular academic centres. We hope that it will also become a source of inspiration for further research endeavours.
