Antička miturgija: žene

Author(s): Svetlana Slapšak / Language(s): Serbian

„Daddy, you are a myth.“—Laura. I saw a memorial notice with this text on the notice board of a small church outside the town of San Severino, in the Italian province of Marche, in September 2009. Laura informed everybody who read the notice, a well as her deceased father, that he had become a myth. He qualified to be a myth by virtue of the fact that he died. Butt hat is not the only possible interpretation: it is also possible that Laura’s father had already been a myth before he died, and that he had to be reminded of it after his death. Or that he did not know that he was a myth and that it was time, at last, that he be informed. In any case, death is the most important, and possibly the only, condition for entry into myth – but to actually accomplish entry it is necessary to have the help of the person who announces and legitimises the entry. The informer, or if you prefer the legitimator, is therefore the main figure in the creation of myth. Laura’s intervention is essential if we understand myth as a set of everyday gestures of remembrance, in which the individual participates freely and criteria are not imposed. In any event, this anthropological datum is consistent with the approach of the most prominent schools of thought on myth and mythology, in particular the two authors who I consider to be my main teachers on the topic, Roland Barthes and Jean-Pierre Vernant. Roland Barthes fundamentally grasped the concept of myth, because he drew the connection between the everyday manipulation of myth and the dominant and prescriptives modes of (mythic) narration. [1] By doing so he opened up the possibility of tying together the everyday production of myths with the modes of myth production in the past. Unfortunately, specialists in ancient mythology do not make use of this possibility. For the most part they have remained in the theoretical fields that operate with elevated ideas about mythology: mythology as the source of collective identities in the worst case, or in a somewhat better case mythology as a source of knowledge about early civilisation ort he history of consciousness. Jean-Pierre Vernant was sharply critical of this type of thinking, on the ground that a thinker and researcher looking from the point of view of the present in the absence of self-reflexivity constitutes the negation of a critical perspective: the object of his criticism in particular was Mircea Eliade and his psychoanalytical approach. He did not draw associations to Barthes’ conception of everyday production of myth. The intervention by Barthes is broader, and takes the traumas of the modern age as given. For his part, Barthes understands myth as a constant, permanent psychologigal inscription of myth, by way of which culture is necessarily transformed into „nature,“ and the person of western culture (whatever that may mean) is attributed a kind of anthropological universality, in the form of an insistent and highly stereotyped abuse on the part of discourses connected with power. Barthes distinguishes three types of readings of myth: there is the orientation toward the empty signifier, when the signified regains meaning in the form of a symbol – this ist he construction of myth through the search for a form for an exiting concept; there is the orientation toward the full signifier.

Rozwój ruchu kobiecego w Ukrainie

Rozwój ruchu kobiecego w Ukrainie

Author(s): Switłana Krawczenko / Language(s): Polish Publication Year: 0

An article devoted to the development of the Ukrainian women’s movement, which was shaped in two directions on two separate areas. The lands of eastern and central Ukraine were under the Russian partition, the lands of western Ukraine – under the Austrian partition. The socio-political situation in these countries conditioned the development of women’s movement in these areas. In both partitions, it was possible to find common slogans referring to independence and women’s rights. Ideas of the Ukrainian feminist movement found themselves in the pages of women’s magazines. These magazines were published by the founder of Ukrainian feminism, the writer Natalia Kobryńska. After 1918, the development of the Ukrainian women’s movement developed in the territories of the Second Polish Republic, in Galicia and in Volhynia. At the same time, the women’s movement developed in the environment of Ukrainian emigration in the areas of Western and Central Europe and North America. The development of the women’s movement was related to the activities of women’s organizations and the functioning of magazines. Whereas in the eastern territories of Ukraine, which were in the Soviet Union, the Soviet authorities used the rights and movement of women for their political purposes. The Soviets were propaganda about the authorities taking care of women. The Soviets have succeeded in establishing the belief that the authorities care for women’s rights and the women’s movement has the right to achieve their goals. In the Soviet Union, the truth about women’s rights was different. Women were exploiting, their role in a marginal society. The Ukrainian women’s movement has gained a new spirit during the independent Ukraine at the end of the 20th century. At that time, the circles and the women’s organization were banned during the Soviet regime. Before the women’s movement there were new goals: in this the most important participation in the fight for building a civil society, for the modernity of the state. The events of 2013–2014, the Kiev Maidan and the war in the south of Ukraine set new challenges ahead of the feminist movement. At present, the Ukrainian feminist movement actively participates in social life, creating new solutions, pursuing the civilizational goals Ukraine is facing.

Problem dyskryminacji kobiet wśród współczesnych chasydów dynastii satmar

Problem dyskryminacji kobiet wśród współczesnych chasydów dynastii satmar

Author(s): Katarzyna Kornacka-Sareło / Language(s): Polish Publication Year: 0

The aim of the paper’s author was to present the ways of women’s discrimination in the contemporary hasidic “sect” called satmar hasidim (the ultra-orthodox community within Judaism). Although satmar hasidim live in the USA, Israel and Western Europe nowadays, they vehemently protest against any forms of assimilation, acculturation or integration into the non-Hasidic environment, and they behave as if time had stopped in the 18th and 19th centuries. As a result, the women belonging to such communities are deprived of almost any personal rights. For example, they are forbidden to learn (even the English and Hebrew languages), constantly being an object of men’s oppression in numerous spheres of life. The inhuman ways, in which satmar women are treated by male hasidim, have been described lately by Deborah Feldman – a young woman who left “the satmar” and decided to tell her story to the world. However, as it seems to the article’s author, leaving the group cannot be regarded as an easy task: Feldman will remain a regular Jewish woman – even against her will – in spite of the fact that now she is an emancipated female writer living in Berlin. In other words, she will return to her own culture code in the future, although she gained much popularity and became a highly-educated, well-known and popular person. Nevertheless, Feldman’s voice should be considered as very important as far as the next generations of hasidic girls are concerned. For, Deborah’s case can really give much hope and strength not only to the satmar women. Thanks to her memoirs some discriminated women will be able to have a faith in their both human and intellectual values, and they will also find it possible to gain personal autonomy and make their own choices as well as personal independent decisions concerning – especially – the most intimate spheres of life.

Women’s Gendered Work Experiences in a Hyper-Masculine Organization: Differences Between Cohorts

Women’s Gendered Work Experiences in a Hyper-Masculine Organization: Differences Between Cohorts

Author(s): Chelli Plummer / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

In 1973 the Department of Defense (DoD) switched to an all-volunteer force (AVF), opening many opportunities for women. Prior to this, women were an inconvenience that the military was forced to deal with, utilized out of necessity but legislated out of the ranks when possible (DePauw 1981; Lazar 2006). This disdain transferred to feelings concerning military families, something the military did not want to focus on (Lazar 2016; Miller 1997; Murdoch et al. 2006). However, a change to AVF projected shortfalls in manpower that necessitated incorporating women more fully. Over the next few decades, women’s service continued to grow, as did their options (Crowley and Sandoff 2017; King 2015). In 2015, Secretary of Defense Carter set a January 1, 2016 deadline for the services to comply with his order to open all combat positions to women (Crowley and Sandoff 2017; King 2015). Today women serve fully in the military. Even as the military draws down the number of troops, women’s participation stays constant, with some branches experiencing increases in the numbers of women serving. Nonetheless, the military remains predominately masculine in both its membership and culture (Crowley and Sandoff 2017). The military and family are competing institutions and, as such, women confront contradictory expectations of the roles they play (Segal 1986). These roles elicit competing devotions which demand complete dedication. While this phenomenon is not unique to military personnel, the intensity and complexity of the demands consume the lives of female service members more than many other workers.

Gender and gender roles in the context of the perceived safety

Gender and gender roles in the context of the perceived safety

Author(s): Miroslava Bozogáňová / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

Perceived safety is a multidimensional construct that encompasses emotional, cognitive and behavioural dimension. Part of the perceived safety is a cognitive evaluation of safety, fear of crime and preventive behaviour. The aim of this study is to make a detailed analysis of the perceived safety with respect to gender itself and gender roles of respondents (masculinity, femininity, androgyny, undifferentiated). Until now the theme of gender roles in the research of perceived safety has appeared more in theoretical spheres. The first research sample consisted of 316 respondents from the population of the Slovak Republic (63,6% women and 36,4% men). The average age of respondents in the sample is M = 35.38 (SD = 15,84) years (15-83 years). The second research sample consisted of 1847 respondents (59,5% women and 40,5% men) from the Slovak Republic's population aged from 15 to 91 years (M = 49,28, SD = 16,53). In order to determine the distribution of respondents in terms of gender roles a questionnaire PAQ - Personal Attributes Questionnaire (Spence, Helmereich, &Stapp, 1974) was used. We found that women showed a lower level of perceived safety in all its dimensions. The results indicate a significant impact of masculinity and feminity on the level of individual’s perceived safety.

Author(s): Orsolya Gergely / Language(s): Hungarian Publication Year: 0

During the last decades, there can be observed a growing trend regarding the proportion of female students in higher education and also more and more female academics are entering the scientific fields. Nonetheless, research shows that for women, the academic sphere remains quite “masculine”, hiding many manifest and latent barriers for women. To what extent do perceive these overt or covert barriers those female academics, who are successful in the academic sphere? To what extent their career narratives do reflect on this issue? The present analysis seeks to answer this questions based on a secondary analysis of the interviews published in the 2021 series of Women in Science of the Nőileg Transylvanian Women’s Magazine. How do the twelve Transylvanian-born interviewees see the opportunities and pitfalls of academic success and has being a women and having children hindered their careers? These are the questions which are analysed.

Gender Attitudes and Perceptions among Young People in Georgia

Author(s): Elene Japaridze,Nina Zhghenti,Maia Barkaia,Mariam Amashukeli / Language(s): English

The issue of gender equality has been overlooked by international organisations and local non-governmental organizations in Georgia. However, local and international communities have made pronounced progress with regard to raising awareness of gender issues through educational activities. Additional aspects of democracy-building have been introduced with gender equality. Many studies have demonstrated that young people represent a progressive force in social change and in the transformation of social and cultural meanings that lead to more liberal attitudes towards gender roles. Current literature also suggests that a number of factors, including gender, education, the type of settlement, employment and religion, influence the understanding of gender equality and gender roles in families and in society. Therefore, the aim of this paper is twofold: a) to determine whether young people have more liberal attitudes regarding a range of gender issues; and b) to examine the determinants of these gender attitudes. The paper supports the recommendations that Georgia received from the UN Human Rights Council in 2011 regarding the elimination of stereotypes (UN Human Rights Council Universal Periodic Review Mechanism and the Gender Perspective 2011). This paper briefly reviews the relevant literature and the Georgian context in which our hypotheses are presented. This review is followed by a description of our methodology. This paper concludes with results and discussion.

Assessment of the Gender Equality Policy in Georgia by Women’s Organizations

Author(s): Elene Japaridze / Language(s): English

Gender relations determine how equally men and women use, have access to, and control resources. We encounter a lot of cases of inequality and discrimination that are caused by models of behavior and expectations established according to gender roles. Division and differentiation between people by gender that leads to gender inequality are characteristic of almost every society. The World Bank report of 2003 says that issues of gender inequality that manifest themselves in unequal participation of men and women, for example, in the areas of education, health care, and politics, affect the development of the world.
