The role of gender in genocide

The role of gender in genocide

Author(s): Amila Husić / Language(s): English Issue: 12/2021

Genocide - the crime above all crimes - is the act of deliberately and systematically destroying a group of people because of their ethnicity, nationality, religion, or race. However, other identities of members of the victimized group, in addition to those already stated, also play a role in the targeted victimization, as well as the perpetration of genocide. One of those key identities is gender as one of the primary social constructs with which all people identify, in various forms. This article explores the role of the gender of victims of genocide, considering it an important element, especially in the indirect identification of genocidal intent. The paper also explores the phenomenon of 'gendercide' and specific forms of genocide against women, such as rape as a form of genocidal act, and other manifestations of systematic and comprehensive sexual violence committed with the genocidal intent. In light of the genocide in the Srebrenica area, in addition to the obvious Bosniak or Muslim identity, as the key element of genocide, it is undeniable that the victims shared another common identity - gender. The killing of members of the group, as the first actus reus of genocide as defined in the Genocide Convention, in the Srebrenica area in July 1995, was mostly aimed at men of combat age, in an attempt to wipe out the Bosniak ethnic community by physically eliminating their male members. Other actions from the conventional definition of this crime were largely directed and performed against the female members of the targeted community. In addition, this also examines the forcible transfer of members of a group (with genocidal intent) as an act of genocide. Although less obvious than other elements of ethnicity, gender plays an important role in ethnic identity. Gender categorization in acts of genocide is not an exclusive feature of the Srebrenica genocide, rather a common feature in other genocide cases.

The Use of English in Contemporary Malaysian Feminist Activism

The Use of English in Contemporary Malaysian Feminist Activism

Author(s): Alicia Izharuddin / Language(s): English Issue: 1 (15)/2013

Feminism and the women's movement in Malaysia are products of specific historical and political contexts. Following this logic, the language used in feminist activism can also be seen as product of similar contexts. The focus of this article is the current state of the feminist movement in Malaysia and its linguistic framework as the effects of changes in language policy. This article then considers the use and relevance of feminist theory in Malaysian feminist activism as linked to the predominance of English in Malaysian feminist discourse. This article also argues that the predominance of English poses challenges to the inclusion of working-class class feminist agendas but offers opportunities in strengthening transnational feminist linkages. Language thus becomes an underlying issue which may explain the successful inroads and setbacks faced by feminist organizations in Malaysia. The issues of language and hegemony of this article couches itself within ongoing debates on Anglophone hegemony in feminist discourse in non-Western nations and how feminist concepts in English are engaged in multilingual contexts.

Заветите, които трябва да се помнят

Author(s): Kostantin Adirkov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 28/2022

The review focuses on Margaret Atwood’s anti-utopian novels “The Testaments” and “The Handmaid’s Tale”. The text discusses the current issues raised in the works. For example, gender relations and in particular the place of women in the modern world, religion and its use as a means of control and subordination, as well as the problem of the destructive dimensions of power. Emphasis is also placed on Atwood's other anti-utopian novels, which moot similar topics. Such are “Oryx and Crake”, “The Year of the Flood”, “MaddAddam” and “The Heart Goes Last”.

AUTHORSHIP POSTURES AND THE POSTURAL REFORMULATION DURING THE 1950s. THE CASE OF WOMEN PROSE WRITERS: LUCIA DEMETRIUS, IOANA POSTELNICU AND CELLA SERGHI

AUTHORSHIP POSTURES AND THE POSTURAL REFORMULATION DURING THE 1950s. THE CASE OF WOMEN PROSE WRITERS: LUCIA DEMETRIUS, IOANA POSTELNICU AND CELLA SERGHI

Author(s): Ioana Moroșan / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2021

Operating under a definition of authorial postures advanced by Jérôme Meizoz, the present study aims to identify the postures adopted by women prose writers who started asserting themselves in the interwar period and, later on, after 1948, partook in the doctrinal ratification process by publishing Socialist Realist novels. Thus, I have identified two overarching categories of postures that engaged literature written by women. In a first phase, I discuss a position that forcefully presses for the articulation of certain postures born of macho prejudice that have become established during the same period in the shape of such concepts as femininity and the feminine creative method, but which ultimately represent merely a strategy for the marginalization of the literary production of women. With the change of regime, which marked the capitalization of the creative space by the field of political power, the systemic adjustment of female prose writers is reified, at the rhetorical level, by revealing the social function of the text. The pretence of them being heroines of the proletarian class marks a radical change in behaviour and discourse from one epoch to the other. What we can conclude from this is that even at the level of an analysis of authorial postures, the minor community of women prose writers submits to predestined postural acts, rather than following the path of articulating an authorial posture, at least not as it was proposed by Meizoz.

Readings Behind the Early Christian Queer Experiences: Lives and Passions of Transgender Nuns

Readings Behind the Early Christian Queer Experiences: Lives and Passions of Transgender Nuns

Author(s): Larisa ORLOV VILIMONOVIĆ / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2021

This paper deals with the ideas of queer experiences in the Early Christian movement, seen through early Christian epistemologies of gender and patristic thought focused on sex differences. The lives and passions of transgender nuns are used in discussing various aspects of gender fluidity in early Christianity. Theoretically, the paper rests on the idea of the performativity of gender, that is, on the ways gender was constructed and how body modifications enabled renegotiation of gender categories. It also focuses on the social context of queer experiences in the late antique period with regard to Roman social norms.

19. YÜZYILIN SONLARI 20. YÜZYILIN BAŞLARINDA (1880-1930) TÜRKİSTAN SÜRELİ YAYINLARI VE KADIN KONUSUNA YAKLAŞIMLARI

Author(s): Yasemin IŞIK,Kübra Koç / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 74/2022

Turkistan Turks, who started to wake up with the “Cedidcilik (Principles-of Jadid/Jadidism)” movement that emerged in Western Turkestan, took advantage of the libertarian atmosphere that emerged after the declaration of the Constitutional Monarchy in 1905 in Tsarist Russia and accelerated their publishing activities even more. The libertarian and egalitarian atmosphere promised by the Bolsheviks blowing in the region with the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution lasted only until 1922; This situation is also reflected in social and cultural life. While these were happening in West Turkestan, East Turkestan was exposed to the attacks of the Chinese on the one hand and the Bolshevik Russians on the other. Some of the Turkestan intellectuals, who could not stand all these pressures, preferred to emigrate and published various newspapers and magazines in the countries they migrated to tell the whole world about the Turkestan cause. Intellectuals who preferred to stay in Turkestan despite all the difficulties experienced did not stay idle and expressed their views through newspapers and magazines by transforming their reactions to the pressures into intellectual movements. In these periodicals, the subjects are usually political; discussions on different issues such as social life, women, women’s rights were also discussed.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s. From Page to Screen. The Making of a Classic. Transformation of Gender Relations

Author(s): Ioana Pankova / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2022

The aim of this article is to explore how the film adaptation of Truman Capote’s novella Breakfast at Tiffany’s translated the literary original into cinematic language. My claim is that the essential transfigurations ensued in terms of gender relations. The question of what motivated them, and how they impacted the cult status which the movie work acquired, is approached by focusing on the transformations from the perspective of the dramatic structure. Through the use of script development tools: type of narration, thematic premise, central question, controlling idea, mediation, protagonists, setting, and the ways in which casting, style of cinematography and music interact with them, I will attempt to pinpoint and analyse the key differences.

“A Soul in Physical Stress”: Transgender Epistemologies in Nightwood

Author(s): Andreea Moise / Language(s): English Issue: 24/2021

The present article questions the common label assigned to Nightwood’s character Dr. Matthew O’Connor, widely analysed as a homosexual transvestite in spite of the various narrative implications that would reconfigure the ambiguities inherent to their gender identity. As a character in a novel considered to be as discriminatory as it is emancipatory, O’Connor is a main character treated as secondary and punished for their exclusion from standards of normativity. I employ the arguments brought forth by Magnus Hirschfeld in 1910 in order to consolidate the understanding of O’Connor as a transgender woman, as well as the views of Esther Newton on drag and camp discourses, in order to retrace the reasons for O’Connor’s critical interpretation as a mere male cross-dresser, a theatrical vision whose femaleness is assigned a performative rather than an identitarian value. Apart from the importance of demarcating transvestism from transsexuality, O’Connor’s wretched treatment and the impossibility of their transitioning is equally relevant. Their transition is envisioned as a matter of embodiment, and their expressed wishes of patriarchal female ideals point to an essentialist transgender narrative that consolidates matters of ‘passing’ that follow mimetic gender ideologies. The path to recognition requires the displacement of hegemonic standards of normativity, in favour of the recreation of the masculine/feminine dichotomy and the fragmentation of expectations for a sexed transitioned product. O’Connor’s pessimistic narrative arc could be seen within the context of an indirect and subverted call for political change coming from the author, whereby transphobia is both reinforced and negotiated.

Ukraine’s International Obligations to Respond to and Address Gender Challenges and Problems Caused by the War

Ukraine’s International Obligations to Respond to and Address Gender Challenges and Problems Caused by the War

Author(s): Svitlana Garashchenko / Language(s): English Issue: 10/2022

The article deals with the international legal regulation of the problem of human trafficking and gender-based violence exacerbated by the war. The author draws attention to the importance of women’s participation in the process of post-war reconstruction, as well as the gender differences in the impact of war on the situation of various vulnerable groups in society. Best protection against gender-based violence, and in particular trafficking in human beings, is to create a situation where there are a few victims as possible, i.e., to prevent the problem. For this purpose, it is never enough to work with victims or vulnerable groups; it is necessary to work with demand, with public opinion, create zero tolerance for such violence, to educate generations of Ukrainians who do not normalize but oppose all forms of gender-based violence, especially its horrific forms such as human trafficking.

Author(s): Senija Penava / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 18/1981

Legal Evolution of Same-Sex Marriage in Ireland

Legal Evolution of Same-Sex Marriage in Ireland

Author(s): Agnieszka Targońska / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2022

The legalization of same-sex relationships has always been a controversial subject. Ireland is a good example of such a case, which decided to legalize same-sex marriages following a referendum held in 2015. Conclusions which stem from the Irish experience in this matter can provide valuable lessons for those countries that have not yet legalized one-sex marriages. The subject of this article is an analysis of the path that Ireland has undertaken to legalize same-sex marriages and an indication of current Irish regulations concerning these marriages. The aim is to discuss legal evolution of the institution of same-sex marriages in Ireland and its consequences for the constitutional order and social perception of the Irish citizens. Due to the fact that there is a lack of complex legal research of this subject in Poland, this article constitutes a gap-filling study. The article has a scientific and research character and may constitute a contribution to further legal considerations on the issue of same-sex marriages in the EU states.

Author(s): Edyta Głowacka-Sobiech,Iwona Chmura-Rutkowska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2022

The aim of the article is to remind Professor Jan Hulewicz, historian of education and culture, social activist and expert in the history of women’s education. Thanks to Hulewicz, the “feminine question” appeared permanently in educational historiography. His in-depth analysis of the public discourse in the nineteenth century on the rights and educational opportunities of women and the description of their struggle for secondary and higher education showed not only political, but also socio-cultural and economic causes of unequal opportunities between women and men in Poland in the nineteenth and early years XX century.

The Evolution of Civic Activism in Contemporary Russia

Author(s): Lisa McIntosh Sundstrom,Laura A. Henry,Valerie Sperling / Language(s): English Issue: 04/2022

This article examines Russian citizens’ support for and participation in civic activism today, nearly three decades after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Specifically, we consider how activism has evolved over time in two key issue sectors—environmentalism and women’s rights. We draw on a recent nationally representative survey that challenges existing stereotypes of Russians as apathetic and/or fearful of participating in civic activism, showing, to the contrary, that Russians are willing and interested in engaging in public activities. Data from field interviews with environmental and feminist activists, along with the authors’ past twenty-five years of research in these areas of Russian civic activism, allow us to identify an ongoing shift from professionalization and formalization of NGOs in the 1990s and early 2000s, to informal organizing, often assisted by social media platforms, today. We argue that the three major social and political drivers of this change in Russian civic activism are the contraction of political freedoms, the decline in foreign funding, and the availability of web-based communication and fundraising technologies.

The article is devoted to an actual problem - combating human trafficking in Ukraine in the context of an armed conflict. The author examines the concept of "trafficking in persons", enshrined in international legal acts and national legislation, and concludes that the approach to the essence of this phenomenon is ambiguous and the possibility of making mistakes when constructing the disposition of the norm of the article on trafficking in persons. It is noted that in the context of the armed conflict in Ukraine in cases of human trafficking, it is necessary for law enforcement agencies to develop general rules for qualification under art. 149. Impactul conveţiei de la Istanbul asupra politicii de prevenire a violenţei în familie în Republica Moldova

Author(s): Sergiu Creţu,Aliona Frunză / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 3/2022

With the ratification of the Istanbul Convention, the State of the Republic of Moldova reiterates that it recognizes domestic violence as a serious form of violation of human rights and fundamental freedoms and assumes that responsibility, internationally and nationally, to fight in order to eradicate the phenomenon and to align with those international standards by which all human rights and freedoms are ensured. Thus, the Istanbul Convention requires the state, the Republic of Moldova, to take legislative and other necessary measures that would effectively contribute to the prevention of violence against women and domestic violence.
