János Kádár as an Economic Reformist And Gustáv Husák As An Antireformist

Author(s): Zsolt Horbulák / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2016

This paper deals with both political and economic history. The main task was to try to compare the attitude of Gustáv Husák and János Kádár about economic reforms in their own countries. The comparison was based on their lives, interests and personalities. Historical evaluation and biographical material was also used. Taking into account that the political circumstances were very similar, the root of the differences between the acts of these politicians had to be the result of individual factors. However, it cannot be denied that the difference between the development of Czechoslovakia and Hungary also played a significant role.

Dynamika rozwoju społeczno-gospodarczego miast różnej wielkości i rangi w województwie opolskim. Synteza procesów rozwojowych

Author(s): Agnieszka Dembicka-Niemiec,Edyta Szafranek-Stefaniuk / Language(s): Polish Issue: 93/2023

The purpose of the article is to identify the directions and dynamics of changes in the socio-economic development of towns in the Opole Voivodeship. The scope of the study includes towns of different size and stature in the settlement network, additionally taking into account territorial units of regional, district and local importance. The temporal scope focuses on three moments in time which allowed the dynamic capture of the development processes of the surveyed units and included the years: 2003, 2010, and 2021. The research highlights that the trends in towns of regional significance were unfavourable and resulted in a decrease in the rank of these units in the settlement structure of the province. At the same time, the opposite trend was observed among the towns of local and district importance, most of which improved their level of socio-economic development.

Transport-Related Social Exclusion in the Opinion of the High School Students – the Prognosis of Transportation Practices

Author(s): Jolanta Kluba,Barbara Szczepańska,Jacek Szczepański / Language(s): Polish Issue: 93/2023

Researchers agree that the access to communal transportation in the Polish rural areas is less favourable than in the Polish urban areas. It may be noticed in the social problem of transport-related social exclusion that is experienced by the village dwellers. The adverse situation of persons living in the rural areas has particularly manifested itself since 1989, which was caused by the economic transformation whose result was the free market. The paper aims at presenting the subjective dimension of the transport-related social exclusion phenomenon, i.e. students’ opinions about the public transport system in their environments as well as the implemented transportation practices which stem from their experience connected to reaching various destinations outside of the places of residence. Additionally, it outlines other opinions functioning in their social environment, mostly families and neighbours, that are related to public transportation and services. The proposed prognosis of transportation practices demonstrates that apart from the spatial and functional structure of a given borough, village, town, city or county, as well as structural features of transportation system, there are also other factors impacting favourably (or adversely) the usage of communal transportation. These are connected to demographic and social factors, such as preferences and convictions.

Przestrzenie publiczne w Tychach – metody ilościowe w ocenie jakości przestrzeni publicznych

Author(s): Michał Jarosław LORBIECKI / Language(s): Polish Issue: 93/2023

Modernist urban development is characterized primarily by the segregation of functions, and thus, their dispersion and increased car dependency. It significantly differs from the model of functioning of cities with traditional urbanism, characterized by mixed functions and density. The article focuses on the modernist urban development, due to its influence on the economics of public spaces, and on the analysis of selected public spaces from the specified in “The Study of Conditions and Directions of Spatial Development” [„Studium uwarunkowań i kierunków zagospodarowania miasta”], using quantitative methods. The specific elements of public spaces are specified on the presented theoretical basis, the state of development of the selected spaces is assessed and measured using the adopted indicators.

Lean transformation: role of the lean manager

Lean transformation: role of the lean manager

Author(s): Norbert MÁTRAI / Language(s): English Issue: 33/2023

Lean leadership is often cited in the practitioner literature as an important factor in successful lean transformation. More and more companies are creating full-time lean manager position and dedicated lean teams. There is a lack of research in the literature on whether the integration of a full-time lean manager into the organisational structure improves the effectiveness of lean, and what are the duties and responsibilities of the lean manager. The research has demonstrated that the effectiveness of lean transformation is significantly higher in organisations with a full-time lean team. A dynamic relationship exists between the roles of the full-time lean manager and the company-wide change management framework. A model job description has been developed for the full-time lean manager position, in the context of the organisational change framework for lean manufacturing implementation. The model would serve as the basis for further empirical research and a recommendation for business leaders on how to design a full-time lean manager position in their company.

Employee Well-Being and the Remote Leader: A Systematic Literature Review

Employee Well-Being and the Remote Leader: A Systematic Literature Review

Author(s): Judith Schmitt / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

Recent industry developments emphasize the need for research into promoting employee well-being via virtual leadership. While the COVID-19 pandemic necessitated remote work, global trends such as low unemployment rates sparked an urgency to prioritize employee well-being. This SLR analyses findings to understand the role of leadership behaviour within this context for application in the business environment. Applying the PRISMA method, 15 relevant studies before and during the pandemic were selected. The analysis found critical aspects of remote work which affect employee well-being while emphasizing implications for leadership. Key themes are boundaries between work-life and private life, supportive relationships and adequate use of technology. Contributing to existing research into employee well-being, this review discusses the effects of remote work on employee well-being, differentiates between research conducted before and during the pandemic and identifies implications for leaders to manage employee challenges in virtual environments to design post-COVID-19 work environments using remote work as a resource, not a demand. Based on the results, the review provides suggestions for further research into (1) comparative studies of employee well-being in remote and traditional work forms, (2) manager-employee relationships in remote settings and (3) virtual onboarding scenarios.Implications for Central European audience: The review informs leaders about well-being-promoting behaviour in remote work settings.

Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Mental Health Intervention on Self-Compassion and Stigmatisation Attitudes among Leaders and Their Followers

Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Mental Health Intervention on Self-Compassion and Stigmatisation Attitudes among Leaders and Their Followers

Author(s): Ivana Šípová,Dorota Lofajová,Martin Máčel,Karina Nielsen,Siw Tone Innstrand / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

Frequent alterations, unpredictable workloads, and blurred lines between professional and personal life all contribute to adverse effects on mental health. As a result, there is a growing need for managers to be attuned to their employees' emotional well-being and to cultivate the ability to openly, safely, and confidentially address mental health matters. Training in mental health awareness can equip managers with the skills to recognize early signs of common mental health conditions, engage in conversations about mental health, and actively promote well-being to prevent mental health challenges. The study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of mental health intervention on self-compassion and stigmatisation attitudes among leaders and their followers. The present study is a part of a large European research project. A pre-post research design was implemented in two Czech SMEs to investigate the effect of mental health awareness training on leaders and their followers. The research focuses on two dependent variables – self-compassion as a personal resource and stigmatisation as the attitude towards mental health. The moderating role of learning transfer and the opportunity to use the training was taken into account. For the leaders, the results indicate a statistically significant increase in self-compassion and a decrease in stigmatising attitudes toward mental health issues. There is no statistically significant moderating role of training transfer variables. For the followers, a statistically significant change was evident in decreased stigmatising attitudes. The results need to be interpreted in the context of organisational changes that both companies went through during the research project resulting in more stress, workload, and drop-outs.Implications for the Central European audience: There is a need for knowledge on how to prevent well-being-related problems in a changing world with more remote work and more mental health issues. The present study adds to this need by exploring the effect of mental health awareness training on two organisational levels – leaders and their followers. The practical contribution of this research is to provide specific recommendations on how to stimulate mental health awareness for leaders through training interventions and thus promote employee well-being.

Korporativno upravljanje: faktori nastanka i odgovornosti u pogledu otkrivanja i sprečavanja finansijskih prevara

Author(s): Svetlana Sabljić,Tajana Serdar Raković / Language(s): English,Serbian Issue: 3/2022

Corporate governance plays a key role in ensuring the quality of financial reporting and preventing frauds in financial reporting, as well as preventing all criminal acts that can be committed in a company. We are witnessing the turbulent and changing business environment that has hit the business world since 2019 with the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as the impact of the current crisis caused by the war in Ukraine. All mentioned difficult and unforeseen circumstances have led to difficulties in doing business of companies that have to maintain business continuity, which significantly increases the risk of criminal activities. The paper deals with the role of corporate governance, external and internal auditors in preventing and detecting financial fraud in companies by analysing financial fraud at the global level in the period from 2018 to 2019. Empirical results indicate that the most frequently committed fraud is misappropriation of funds, while false financial reporting caused the greatest losses. The greatest role in the detection of criminal acts was played by anonymous reports, internal audit, detailed management review and external audit

KULTUROWY ASPEKT SEKURYTYZACJI GRANIC

KULTUROWY ASPEKT SEKURYTYZACJI GRANIC

Author(s): Dariusz Góra / Language(s): Polish Issue: 46/2023

Sealing, enhancing security, securitization of the state border is a strategic andundisputed task at the level of system analysis. However, the inclusion of the culturalfactor problematizes the issue, especially in the case of borders drawn in an arbitraryand repressive manner against the local population. An example of the apt integrationof the cultural factor into the framework of strategic analysis is provided by the 2020National Security Strategy of the Republic of Poland. In particular, attention is paid tothe belt of dense Polish settlement, from Podlachia to the vicinity of Dyneburg on theDvina River in Latvian Latgale, through the middle of which the eastern border of theEuropean Union now runs. Pointing to the necessity of adopting a definition of thenation as a cultural community, the author draws attention to the actions of stateauthorities, which seem to be starting from the idea of the etatistically understood socalled neo-nationalism.

Ile rynku w rynku - o gospodarkach dualnych

Ile rynku w rynku - o gospodarkach dualnych

Author(s): Stefan Małecki-Tepicht / Language(s): Polish Issue: 35 (1)/2023

In this paper, part of a larger whole, the author argues that economy processes are always of a dual nature. This means that two mechanisms govern economies in parallel: a non-market mechanism, and a market mechanism. The action of these two different mechanisms is strictly connected to two different goals of economy: goals that are pursued by economic entities, that is, by households, enterprises and the state. Households aspire to satisfy the needs of household members. This means that they will exert themselves and spend until they obtain a product of the size required for the household’s endurance and survival. In other words, they will maximise the product as the sum of spending and effects, P=S + E. The state functions in a manner similar to the household, just on a much larger scale - with the goal of enduring and surviving, it maximises the product as the sum of spending and effects, which guarantees the endurance of the state (of power). This is the non-market mechanism of economy. Enterprises on the other hand have a totally different goal. They seek to maximise profit as the difference between product size and spending, E=P-S. This is the market mechanism of economy. History has been witness to these three groups of entities participating in each others’ processes of economy for at least the last 10,000 years, from the hunter-gatherer tribes to today’s 193-plus member states of the United Nations. These three different groups of economic entities pursuing their own goals mean that the process of economy is subjected simultaneously to two different action mechanisms. And we are therefore dealing with dual economies. The author strives to demonstrate that this dualism of economy reveals itself above all in the labour market, where households participate through labour supply, while enterprises and the state are behind the demand for labour. It is the participation of household members in the economic activities of enterprises and the state that causes them (the households) to “transplant” the nonmarket mechanism onto the functioning of the market mechanism of the two other groups of entities. Nota bene, this is the only “market” on which the state behaves like an enterprise, a business. Taking the labour market theme further, the author aims to present its attributes that determine the dual economy nature. After Arthur Lewis, he cites his division of the labour market into “bad” and “good” jobs depending on their location (rural or urban) and their sectors of the economy (agriculture - industry). It is precisely because of this dualism of economy that we have Baumol’s “cost disease” in the sphere of services, where labour costs are growing faster than the productivity of the employed. S. Gomułka distinguishes two areas of the world’s economies, where the first - with 15% of the population - is responsible for 95% of patents in modern manufacturing techniques, and the other, with the remaining 85%, accounts for 5% of such patents. He says: “A high level of duality means that in these two areas, the sources of technical progress are completely different, and as such the mechanisms behind economic growth must also be different” (Gomułka 2016: 18). The author sees justification for such an understanding of dual economy both in Aristotle, from over 2,000 years ago, and in the work of Ranis and Fei, dealing with the dual economy for at least half a century.

Ján Jiskra z Brandýsa a vdovské majetky Alžbety Luxemburskej v Hornom Uhorsku. Banské mestá a ich úloha vo financování vojenských aktivít

Author(s): Pavol Maliniak / Language(s): Slovak Issue: 50/2023

The work of Jan Jiskra in Hungary have been studied so far mainly against the background of political and military history. Research has only marginally addressed the economic activities of Jiskra and his party. Jiskra's contacts with the League of the Seven Mining Towns between 1442 and 1457 form a probe into the broader issue. They bring to light specific forms of economic cooperation - the financing of armies, castles and defence in relation to the changing distribution of power. A central role played Jiskra's control over the mining and coinage chamber in Kremnica, which also helps to better understand his power.

The performance of human capital in relationship with economic growth

Author(s): Anca Ungureanu / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2023

In this paper I examine the impact of human capital on the economic growth for the OECD countries during the period 1990-2022 employing fixed effects estimator. My contribution to the literature comes from the chosen variables, as the proxies selected were not yet used by other researchers in the same formula. The indicators selected are tertiary enrollment, spending on health, life expectancy and population growth. The data was constructed into a panel of 38 countries over the period 1990-2022. Results surprisingly show that only tertiary enrollment, life expectancy and population growth have a significant impact on economic growth. Therefore, my recommendations are focusing on improving the quality of life.

Effect of Economic Policy Uncertainty on Stock Returns: Analysing the Moderating Role of Government Size

Effect of Economic Policy Uncertainty on Stock Returns: Analysing the Moderating Role of Government Size

Author(s): Yunus Karaömer / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

This study investigates whether the response of stock returns to economic policy uncertainty depends on the level of government size in the economy. Although there is a consensus in the liter- ature that stock markets react negatively to policy-related uncertainties, the factors that determine the magnitude of this effect have been ignored. This study is the first to demonstrate that the magnitude of this effect depends on the size of the government in the economy. In the study, data for the period 1997Q1–2021Q4 pertaining to 18 countries are used. According to results of fixed-effects estimations with Driscoll-Kraay robust standard errors, economic policy uncer- tainty affects stock returns negatively. In addition, the coefficient of interaction term formed by the variables of policy uncertainty and government size is also negative and significant. These results indicate that the negative response of stock returns to policy uncertainty grows as gov- ernment size increases. The sensitivity analysis results show that the findings are not sensitive to the estimations made by alternative approaches and are therefore robust. The findings of the study contain important implications for policymakers. Investors can also benefit from the results at the point of international asset allocation against future policy-related uncertainties

Significant communication factors for sustainable products with a focus on Czech consumers

Significant communication factors for sustainable products with a focus on Czech consumers

Author(s): Eva Jaderná,Alena Srbová / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

The aim of the study is to identify the importance of partial communication factors of sustainable products for the Czech consumer. First, the data from an online survey is interpreted in the form of descriptive statistics to establish a comprehensive overview of the attitudes and preferences of Czech consumers. Second, the global envelope method is used to evaluate reactions to packaging, certificates, ingredients, in-store placement, awareness, sales in a sustainable store, higher prices, and other factors among selected target groups. Based on the results of the 2020 questionnaire survey, significant target groups were identified by frequency analysis and their responses to communication factors were monitored for apparel, drugstore and cosmetics, and food. The test results show that clearly the most important communication factor for sustainable products is the certificate, to a large extent for two categories: males 45 – 64 years old and females who are university educated.

Beyond data: strategically leveraging consumer metrics and market signals of business prosperity in the context of marketing communications

Author(s): Tomáš Fašiang,Pavel Gežík / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

In the dynamic environment of global markets, understanding the complexity of the relationships between economic indicators and consumer behaviour, which can be deliberately influenced by targeted communication activities, is becoming a decisive competitive advantage in achieving economic prosperity for businesses. The aim of the study is, based on market data correlation, to explain and approach the interrelations of selected economic attributes and metrics of consumer behaviour. The inquiry is conducted in the scope of optimisation determination of the allocation of the purchase gradient of a business unit in the context of maximising the effect of communication and service activities oriented towards achieving economic prosperity of the business entity. The focus of the study reflects the application of the interconnectivity of market predisposition, characteristics of the target group and geographic servicing in the form of localisation of the business unit in the paradoxical situational model of Hotelling’s Law. The result of the study confirms the leveraging effect of transactional increase and the rationale of localised communication effect for influencing consumers’ purchase decision-making processes in the purchase pairing of a business unit.
