Dzieje normatywnej dychotomii języka i dialektu: Od greko-łacińskich źródeł po państwa etnicznojęzykowe Europy Środkowej

The concept of “a language” (Einzelsprache, that is, one of many extant languages) and its opposition to “dialect” (considered as a “non-language,” and thus subjugable to an already recognized language merely as “its” dialect) is the way people tend to think about languages in the West today. It appears to be a value-free, self-evident conception of the linguistic position. So much so that the concept of “language” was included neither in Immanuel Kant’s system of categories, nor in the authoritative Geschichtliche Grundbegriffe: Historisches Lexikon zur politisch sozialen Sprache in Deutschland. This paper sketches the rise of the “dialect vs language” opposition in classical Greek, its transposition onto classical Latin, and its transfer, through medieval and renaissance Latin, to the early modern period. On the way, the Greek and Latin terms for “language” (and also for “dialect”) sometimes functioned as synonyms for peoples (that is, ethnic groups), which – importantly – contributed to the rise of the normative equation of language with nation in the early nineteenth century. It was the beginning of the ethnolinguistic kind of nationalism that prevails to this day in Central Europe.

This work aims to illustrate equivalence relations in specific French, and to continue with a short introduction to the world of equivalence between two foreign languages, the source language (L1) and the target language (L2). We also considered it important to give a few examples from dialectal French to better illustrate equivalence relations. We chose this topic because of the importance of equivalence for translators and specialists, the conceptual aspect being of major importance. We begin our treatment of this subject by taking an onomasiological approach, i.e. a classical one, following the Wusterian line, i.e. the terminological line par excellence, to continue with the most recent approach, i.e. that of parallel analysis.

Translating boundaries with restaurant menus. Strategies to translate traditional Tuscan food items into English

Florence and Tuscany are popular tourist destinations in Italy. Tourists visit the city and the surrounding countryside looking for scenic views and artistic landmarks, as well as to experience the local food culture. The idea for my paper originated with having to translate a restaurant menu – which arose numerous methodological questions. In particular, questions regarding how to examine traditional menu items from a linguistic standpoint and how to actualise effective translations for the real transactional situations where menus are used - i.e., buying a meal. The aim of this paper is to discuss some strategies devised to translate culture-bound menu items not only to help intercultural restaurant transactions, but also to increase awareness of the local culture. The paper also aims to generate debate on how menus, thanks to strategic translation choices, could be considered another “textual” opportunity which might contribute to help crossing cultural boundaries.

During the period 2020-2021, the general educational context, besides other fields of activity, had a specific character, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It forced us all, teachers and students, to make supplementary efforts in order to reach the main teaching and learning objectives. Thus, we consider that the teachers should accept the challenge represented by this particular situation and make use of methods that help diversification of the class, making the subject more accessible and also helps maintaining the students’ focus on the subject. One of these methods is the “flipped classroom”, whose positive results have been proven by previous studies. Thus, the present paper focuses on presenting the concept in detail, being considered of a real help, especially in the unprecedented context in which we are, encouraging its application during the Romanian language classes.

Anglicismos en el español contemporáneo – un análisis etimológico

This paper focuses on current anglicisms in Spanish, but offers also a short theoretical view on the contact between Spanish and English and also between Spanish and German, Arabic, French and Italian, following Dworkin’s perspective (2012), who wrote a complex history of the Spanish vocabulary. The analysis part of the paper represents an etymological analysis on five terms coming from English, which involved searches in different corpuses and dictionaries, like the Historical Dictionary Corpus (HDC) and the Dictionary of the Spanish Language by Real Academia Espanola. The anglicisms are relatively new lexical entries in Spanish, and their use was accentuated at the beginning of the 21st century, for example: bloguero, chat/chatear, e-mail, beisbol, sueter.

This study analyses the tense alternance of imperfect and present subjunctive with volitive verbs and expressions on native Romanians having a B2 or C1 Spanish level. The paper focuses on the tense used by users having an advanced level of language knowledge; the objective of the study is to show the acquisition of subjunctive tenses by speakers who have a high level of both Spanish and Romanian languages; specifically, the paper wants to see how the learning process was achieved and how much did the semantic value of the verb which requires its use in the volitive expressions influenced the correct usage of subjunctive. The results do not indicate and absolute domain of the use of subjunctive with volitive verbs, but it indicates the predominance of the use of verb tenses according to grammatical norms.

Transferring the original meaning into the target language often proves a challenge, especially when the translator is little aware of the peculiarities of the source culture. Hence, developing cultural awareness is essential for developing linguistic awareness. Both types of awareness contribute to extending linguistic hospitality to a source-language term, making it as transparent as possible in the target language.

The paper tries to identify the methods of connection between different synaesthetic centers for the reception of reality and gradual implementation of the didactical techniques in the layered models of display of the read messages. The level of complexity of interpretation is literal and contextual, but this stage is essential for the determination of the action vector according to the learning strategy. Contextualized comprehension represents the practical elaboration of the methods of approach of an understanding in a st5ratfied aspect and staged guidance, from segmental phonetic units to the appropriation of circumstantial structures of communication. Contextualization at intersegmental level/ fragments of lexeme implies intrinsic elements of the literal understanding and contextual, through the stratified method of applying didactical techniques.

Deep culture-rooted stereotypes: a contrastive study of Romanian and Spanish cultures through ethnic-referring expressions

The contrasts that sometimes exist between what is said literally and what is really meant, the adequacy of the sequences, as well as the adjustment of grammatical constructions to the context and the situation, or the adequate selection of the referent as a previous step for achieving full comprehension of the statements are three types of phenomena that elude a precise characterization in purely grammatical terms. Escandell Vidal (2013) emphasizes the importance of extra-linguistic factors that condition the effective use of language, including this characteristic in the definition of pragmatics that encompasses, in her opinion, "the considerations that determine both the use of a specific statement by a specific speaker in a specific communicative situation, such as its interpretation by the addressee " (Escandell Vidal 2013: 15). However, the fact that the relationship between language and reality is not straightforward (and subsequently, that language is not mere nomenclature) is apparent in the lack of lexical-grammatical correspondence between different languages– a phenomenon observable in different instances of language contact, including interlingual translation and language learning. Moreover, the same stimulus from reality is “interpreted” and rendered differently by different languages. Therefore, our analysis is a descriptive one, which will focus especially on the extra linguistic situation, in order to provide context, the register of use, the meaning, the communicative function, the use restrictions and examples of use. Altogether, all these pieces of information will help us contour the image that the analysed expressions depict. In order to do so, the following steps have been followed: selection of the ethnic-referring expressions; data compilation and the need of establishing a frequency of use for each expression, in order to identify the most frequently-used stereotypes; reference to the definition proposed by the dictionaries (and if considered relevant or/and available, the etymological data); reference to sociological and/or cultural data, when needed.

The Spelling, Phonology and Morphology of the "Međimurje Language" in the Newspaper Muraköz - Megyimurje between 1941 and 1944

By applying the results of the latest research findings on the Međimurje dialect, the paper analyses the language (spelling, phonology and morphology) of Kajkavian texts (one of the three major Croatian dialects) in the newspaper Muraköz that was published by occupying Hungarian authorities during World War II in the Međimurje region. The spelling is rated as moderately root-based. Although the vowel systems in the Međimurje dialect are very complex and with many units, the proofreaders and the editor of the newspaper opted for only five vowels recorded in the Croatian standard language. The morphology of Kajkavian texts in that newspaper was very carefully harmonized, which proves that the standardization of the Međimurje dialect was taken very seriously by Hungarians. It is concluded that the authors of Kajkavian texts in the researched newspaper tried to make a choice of language features that would be acceptable to most speakers of the Međimurje dialect.

For more than half a century, linguists and educators from all over the world, such as L. Ehri, K. Goodman, W. Rivers, J. Zwiers, F. Serafini (to name but a few) have been intensely concerned with the research of the reading-comprehension process, in general, and with the challenges and possible solutions in the case of acquiring a second (sometimes third) language after the mother tongue (and, in this case, after English). These studies have shown that reading turns out to be a complex and interactive process, in relation to which students can experience great difficulties, which target language, memory, sensory perception and motivational aspects (K. Maria, P. Pearson and L. Fielding, G.E. Woolley).My paper, organized in three parts (one that sets the general framework of the analysis, another in which the research methodology is outlined and a third, in which the collected data are processed) aims to present the analysis of the data resulting from an experiment carried out during three years in the framework of the Preparatory Year at "Petroleum-Gas" University in Ploiesti during 2020-2023, having as its subject the difficulties of receiving a written message for the B1 level by allogeneic students (72 in number), coming from all corners of the world. I was particularly interested in identifying those elements that lead to difficulties and blockages and finding some strategies by which they can be eliminated or at least ameliorated, but also the extent to which we can correlate reading-comprehension skills with that concerning written and oral communication in Romanian.

This study explores the use of synonyms in medical English and examines their implications for translation and effective communication. Focusing on the nuanced roles that synonymous lexical units play in clarifying meaning and avoiding ambiguity, the research investigates how medical texts can be arranged to enhance clarity and stylistic variation. Through an extensive literature review, the study integrates philosophical, logical, and linguistic perspectives to categorize synonyms into various subtypes, such as sense-synonyms, near-synonyms, partial synonyms, quasi-synonyms, and absolute synonyms. The research methodology combines qualitative and quantitative approaches, including surveys, corpus-based analyses, and detailed case studies, to assess how synonym selection impacts both clinical documentation and patient education. Key findings reveal that while technical terms (e.g., “arrhythmia”, “epistaxis”, “myocardial infarction”) are preferred in formal contexts, their lay equivalents (e.g., “irregular heartbeat”, “nosebleed”, “heart attack”) are more effective for public communication. The study also underscores the importance of ethical and methodological rigor and highlights the need for standardized vocabularies and translation tools tailored to the medical field. Overall, the research demonstrates that a context-sensitive and balanced approach to synonym selection is essential for maintaining both precision and accessibility in medical communication, thereby enhancing patient safety and improving translation accuracy.

TRANSLATION AND ADAPTATION IN THE FIELD OF DENTISTRY

The current situation of translations is at the confluence between the need to create an unequivocal message and the adaptation to external, extra-linguistic rigours. The field of dentistry is under the sign of the same limitations imposed by the specialized language, by balancing translation and adaptation. It is the assertion from which we start in our research. The overall objective of this study is to highlight concerns for dental terminology, both internationally and nationally. We will consider, in this sense, the relationship between the simplified side of communication in the field of research, given by the traditional terminology, from a French source, and - the current terminology, from an Anglo-Saxon and American source, which knows a special dynamic. It is an innovative vocabulary under continuous development, with the English language claiming dental names and making communication difficult. We will also consider the problem of the false friend (Mány Dániel), in the specialized translation, of the inadequate translation. We will investigate the case of wrong equivalences of the term dantură, borrowed from French (according to French denture) in the lexicon of dentistry in languages other than Romanian (the application is made in English and Hungarian). Taking the original terms from the English language, not adapted to the phonetic-phonological rules of the Romanian language, is another aspect that we have in mind in our research. The descriptive-linguistic, functional and comparative methods are just some of the research methods. The first conclusion that emerges is that translations in the field of dentistry represent a continuous challenge in the current stage of the evolution of science.

The article presents an escape classroom "Locked in the library", which is implemented with 2nd grade students whose mother tongue is different from Bulgarian. The goal is to provoke the students' desire to develop their linguistic and digital competences, by involving them in various activities that improve their level of mastery of the Bulgarian language, to increase their motivation for learning and to be able to develop and show their potential and creativity . In the realization of the set goals, approaches such as STEAM, "Learning through experience" and "Learning through play" are applied, through which the student learns actively: observing, exploring, experimenting, explaining, and not just memorizing and reproducing information. To optimize time and personalize didactic materials, in the process of creating the escape classroom: "Locked in the library" artificial intelligence - Chat GPT was used.

Anglicismele din terminologia cosmeticii în limba română actuală (II)

The issue of anglicisms in Romanian is the subject of numerous researches, to which is added the present work. In this study, we focused on analyzing the cosmetic terms of English origin that make up the therminology of cosmetics. The linguistic material from which our corpus is conceived was extracted from three of the most famous and consulted publications dedicated to the female public, namely the magazines ELLE, Unica and VIVA!. Their careful research highlighted many linguistic facts: the attitude of openness and acceptance of speakers in relation to lexical units of foreign origin, loans of English origin that appear together with Romanian words in the same speech, the extension of the meaning of some terms beyond the boundaries of specialization and their penetration in the usual communication,the popularization and trivialization of these specialized lexical units. Despite the need to borrow lexical units of English origin, the adoption of a reserved attitude, in relation to this phenomenon, we consider it to be the right solution.
