Лексічныя і граматычныя асаблівасці перакладу глаў 1 і 2 Евангелля паводле Мацвея на беларускую мову (праваслаўная і каталіцкая рэдакцыі 2017 г.)

Author(s): Yauhen Pankou / Language(s): Belarusian Issue: 24/2023

This article provides a comparative analysis of certain lexical and grammatical peculiarities in the Catholic and Orthodox editions of the Belarusian translation of Chapters 1 and 2 of the Gospel of Matthew in the New Testament. The study is based on biblical textual sources in Belarusian, Polish, Greek and Russian, in-cluding explanatory and other dictionaries, as well as works on modern Belaru-sian literary lexicology. It is emphasized that while adapting the Gospel of Mat-thewinto Belarusian, translators exhibit a certain dependence on the influence of foreign languages and the traditions of confessional writing, thus sometimes disregarding encyclopedic variants, or ignoring lexical, semantic and grammati-cal processes characteristic of the modern Belarusian literary language.

Linguistic scenery in Latvian botany textbooks (1880s-1940s): Stable and varying features

Author(s): Jānis Veckrācis / Language(s): English Issue: 42/2023

Texts, including original botany textbooks (not translations or adaptations) produced in the second part of the 19th century and early decades of the 20th century embody a period of intense linguistic development in the Latvian language. This paper provides a linguistic analysis of the features of two botany textbooks: Botānika tautas skolām un pašmācībai (Botany for Folk Schools and Self-Education) by Jānis Ilsters (1883) and Botānika (Botany) by Pauls Galenieks, also citing its further editions (1924–1945). The aim of the study is to collate data that is representative of morphological, syntactic and lexical changes and stable elements from these texts. The respective linguistic phenomena are discussed and analysed in the context of language facts present in several dictionaries and other relevant publications. The data obtained in this study illustrates that by the end of the period covered in this paper, the process of turbulent linguistic changes in the Latvian language had been replaced by more balanced development with some indications of stabilisation, although numerous features remained variable and dynamic. Despite a number of the syntactic and lexical elements recorded in the main sources of the study having since changed and/or become obsolete, these textbooks provide evidence that both the Latvian language and the linguistic materials used in botany were to a great extent already well developed and had begun to enter the stabilisation phase. In recent years, botany has become an area of increased linguistic interest among botany experts and linguists themselves, although the collation of a detailed data set detailing the development of the whole body of specialised lexis used in botany remains a task for the future.

За правописа на словосъчетания като мениджър човешки ресурси

За правописа на словосъчетания като мениджър човешки ресурси

Author(s): Lora Zheleva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 3/2023

The text discusses spelling difficulties encountered in expressions such as мениджър човешки ресурси (human resources manager), специалист обучения (training expert), такса поддръжка (maintenance fee). The spelling variations stem from the use of quotation marks and capitalisation, on the one hand, or a comma or a dash, on the other. A possible reason for these variations may be the lack of a preposition, which makes the expressions sound atypical for the Bulgarian language. It is, therefore, recommended to use a preposition: мениджър по човешки ресурси, специалист по обучения, такса за поддръжка.

Тернарные структуры в минейном Житии Иосифа Волоцкого

Тернарные структуры в минейном Житии Иосифа Волоцкого

Author(s): Igor E. Ivanov / Language(s): Russian Issue: 4/2023

The article is devoted to the reflection of the Trinitarian dogma in The Life of Joseph Volotsky, in which triple repetitions are found at the lexical, syntactic and plot levels of the text. The significance of the Trinitarian dogma in the biography of Joseph Volotsky is related to the controversy that erupted at the turn of the 15th-16th centuries between the Orthodox Church and the Judaizer heresy, whose adherents questioned the dogma of the Trinitarian nature of God. Joseph Volotsky became the most active participant in antiheretical activities. The Life compiled by Bishop Savva Cherny of Krutitsky in the 1740s aligns itself with the Life of Sergius of Radonezh, in which numerous triple repetitions are present. The connection between The Life of Joseph of Volotsky and the Life of Sergius of Radonezh is evidenced by the textual connection of the introductory parts of the texts; indirect proof of the importance of the figure of Sergius of Radonezh for Joseph Volotsky is also apparent in the genetic connection between the saints, based on belonging to the same line of monastic tradition: Joseph took the tonsure from Paphnutius Borovsky, whose mentor Nikita Borovsky was a novice of Sergius. Analysis of the Life for triple repetitions at the structural and event levels of the text not only indicates that the Life of Sergius of Radonezh became a literary source for the biography of the Volotsk hegumen and that the author of The Life reflected in the monument a polemic that was relevant at the time of the saint’s life, but also complements the ideas of philological medieval studies about the biography of Joseph Volotsky. Today we have to state with regret that the Life of Joseph Volotsky, with rare exceptions, has not become an object of interest for philologists; this article intends to shed light on one of the aspects of the poetics of the monument.

A Stylistic Approach to Thomas Campion’s There Is a Garden in Her Face

A Stylistic Approach to Thomas Campion’s There Is a Garden in Her Face

Author(s): Halit Alkan / Language(s): English Issue: 115/2023

Literary works come into existence through authors’ use of language units in particular ways. Style is considered as the choice of linguistic characteristics from all the probabilities in language. Stylistics attempts to create an interaction of readers with the language of a literary text to clarify how a reader understands the text. This study examines how Thomas Campion manipulated basic linguistic features to form stylistic effects in order to produce meaning in There Is a Garden in Her Face. The analysis involves lexical, semantic, grammatical (syntactic), graphological, and phonological (sound pattern) levels. It helps to clarify the context of the poem. The stylistic analysis shows that the poem is very carefully constructed. All three stanzas in the poem are grammatically parallel to each other and deal with the lady’s beauty whose face is compared to a garden of heavenly paradise where every kind of delicious fruit grows there. The unity of the poem is secured by the refrain describing a beautiful lady’s lips. The graphological deviation shows a system of capitalization to foreground important words such as “Roses” and “white Lilies” in the poem to represent love/passion, and innocence/purity. The phonetic parallelism reinforces the system of parallel meaning in terms of alliteration and assonance. The poem is based mostly on similes and metaphors to make the imagery of the flowers and fruit growing in a garden much more vivid. With this, the lady’s physical features are portrayed. The noun cherry is used with the adjective sacred which portrays that the lady’s lips have not been touched or kissed by anyone. The same line which is repeated at the end of each stanza foregrounds that this beautiful lady is unattainable unless if she says her lips are fully ripe to become most valuable. Here, female beauty signals the ideals of Elizabethan beauty: white skin, blushing cheeks, and red lips. This study shows how Campion has been able to manipulate language which is an integral part of a literary work. Campion has created changes through a systemic use of language to get his message across to readers. This study may help researchers understand how Campion used stylistic tools in his poem.

Семантички потенцијал глагола рећи и казати и њихових префиксала

Семантички потенцијал глагола рећи и казати и њихових префиксала

Author(s): Danijela Radovanović / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 54/2023

The subject of this paper is the semantic potential of two verbs — reći and kazati — which in Serbian are considered typical examples of verbs of speaking and true synonyms at once. The primary aim of this paper is the analysis of polysemantic structures of the two verbs as well as exploring the lexical relationships between them. The material was excerpted from the Dictionary of the Serbo-Croatian Literary Language (Речник српскохрватскога књижевног језика), and the primary definitions of source meanings with examples, while the control dictionary was that of SASA (Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts). The lexicographic definition is enough for determining the meaning of the verbs, but in order to highlight the complex semantic potential of the verbs, it is necessary to refer to the context; thus, in one portion of the paper, we concern ourselves with searching the corpora — more specifically SrpKor2013 and SrWaC — for attested occurrences of the examples excerpted from the dictionary. As a consequence, the same archiseme will have a larger number of prefixed verbs, while at the same time developing an antonymy among the lexemes, considering the fact that antonyms as well as synonyms have a large number of common semes in their semantic configurations. Despite the fact that the verbs reći and kazati are considered true synonyms, we can still talk about the differences in their meanings, especially if we compare the meanings of their prefixed verbs. The verb kazati has a richer polysemantic structure and more prefixed verbs, although some of them are semantically deviant from the base verb.

Български и сръбски лични имена, образувани от латински антропоними, изведени от апелатив със значение „цвят“

Author(s): Gergana Petkova,Vanya Ivanova / Language(s): English,Bulgarian Issue: 1/2023

The choice of a personal name is subject to various restrictions. A lot of extralinguistic factors play an important role, such as old folk traditions, family rules, laws, and the official religion in a country. The research object of this paper are Bulgarian and Serbian personal names (both male and female) based on Latin anthroponyms derived from an appellative with the meaning of “colour”. The examples selected are divided into groups according to: 1) the Latin anthroponym etymological characteristics (if it is a Gentile name, a cognomen (a Gentile nickname), a Neo-Latin name); 2) the initial appellative meaning (the colour it denotes); 3) the extralinguistic information connected with the official lists of saints canonized by the Orthodox and/or Catholic Church.
