Professor Lyubomir Miletich (1863 – 1937) is one of the linguists of the first generation of Bulgarian scientists, who left a significant mark in the history of Bulgarian linguistics. His contributions in various fields of knowledge – linguistics, history, ethnology and others – were highly appreciated by his contemporaries and to this day serve as a basis for the development of further research in these fields. Of particular importance for linguistics are his studies „Das Ostbulgarische“ and „Die Rhodopemundarten der bulgarischen Sprache“, which describe the features of some Bulgarian dialects at the end of the 19th century. In 2023, when the160th anniversary of L. Miletich's birth will be celebrated, his contributions to the development of Bulgarian science are increasingly indisputable.

The following text takes up the problem of modernity in its canonical formulation proposed in 1863 by Charles Baudelaire in his important essay entitled Le peintre de la vie moderne. The author of the article tries to show the basic framework of this concept with the definition of modernity itself and the category of beauty, remaining at Baudelaire’s conception in natural connection with it. The author highlights the importance of Baudelaire’s earlier views and the influence that the Paris World Exhibition of 1855 had on him.

Semantic Interpretations of Proper Names in Literary Translation: Terry Pratchett's "Wyrd Sisters" in Bulgarian

Name crafting has been and still is of importance when devising a literary character with certain traits and features that are meant to outstand a character's personality. Thus, literary names serve as a handy tool in any piece of writing, since they complete their bearers in a discrete, yet a vivid way when given an appropriate name by the author of a piece of writing. As far as fantasy is concerned, the choice of literary names is freer, but still requires more creativity, given the fact that fantasy names can be translated. When rendered from one language into another, names undergo various structural alterations, semantic modulations, or even syntactic reconstructions. Therefore, the current paper aims at analysing literary names in Terry Pratchett's fantasy novel "Wyrd Sisters" with focus on their rendering into Bulgarian. Etymology and semantic interpretations are to be sought for as well as morphological and syntactic structure of names in both languages of interest in favour of the hypothesis that literary names carry meaning which, when revealed, gives a more concrete idea of a personage in a novel.

Rendering Ukrainian Historical Terminology of the Old Rus' Period into English

The article presents a study that focuses on approaches to rendering Ukrainian historical terminology related to the Old Rus' period into English selected en masse from Ukrainian and English academic texts on history, with a special focus on culture-specific terminology. Historical terms for translation purposes are categorised into non-culture-specific historical terminology reflecting universal concepts of historical science, and culture-specific historical terminology. The purpose of the article is to determine specific methods for Ukrainian-English translation of historical terminology of the Old Rus' period. The paper discusses approaches and methods used by English-speaking academics to secondary term formation, taking place when rendering concepts denoting Ukrainian original culture-specific terminology into English. Different groups of historical terms are described with a special focus on onomastic terminology. It is demonstrated that the historical context should be taken into account for the correct designation of a historical concept. Non-culture-specific historical terminology is predominantly rendered by existing equivalents, which were formed through phonological adaptation and/or calque translation. The most appropriate technique for rendering culture-specific Ukrainian historical terminology is shown to be combined renomination, the method that uses both a transcription and a description of a historical concept.

The present paper has several key objectives: on the one hand, to present against the background of a historical overview the situation around the current state of academic Bulgarian studies in Serbia and outline its near and remoter perspectives of development; on the other hand, to draw attention to Bulgarian studies in Serbia as an inseparable part of foreign Bulgarian studies; and on the third hand, to show the common historical roots, tasks and futures of the two Bulgarian studies centers – Belgrade and Niš – as a prerequisite for collaborative work between them within the field of teaching, research and cultural activity. The overview of the past of Belgrade Bulgarian studies which began its development around the end of the 1950s and the beginning of the 1960s, and of the University of Niš which was inaugurated in 2001, shows their common origins, a decade-long history and long-term development in the educational, scientific and methodological spheres. These characteristics prove the existence of already established traditions which have shaped the modern aspect of the two academic centers. The different educational model and setting do not confront the two units in competition with each other, on the contrary – they enable them to complement each other, offering in a different format the acquisition of the Bulgarian language and culture, and covering the territories where the Bulgarian community is concentrated. It is namely the connection to this community that shapes the specific aspect of Bulgarian studies in Serbia which must adequately meet the educational requirements for a mother tongue.

In 1934, Nikola Nachov, better known for his research on spiritual centers during the Bulgarian Renaissance, under the pseudonym Nancho Donkin, published the travelogue “To Brusa and Back”, in which he described his journey from Plovdiv, through Edirne and Istanbul, to the Asia Minor city of Bursa in the turbulent year 1879. The specific purpose of the then 19-year-old young man’s trip to the old Ottoman capital was to sell the offices in the commercial inns owned by his father, a famous abadji craftsman who had died suddenly before his birth. During the journey which lasted several months, the son, together with his uncle, went around the city and the surrounding villages to collect his father’s money. Thus, the author founds himself in the village of Susurluk, where a compatriot of his from Kalofer had settled down and lived for some time with his family. The proposed text contains observations on the abyss of otherness in which the completely innocent Parashkeva, the daughter of the family, finds herself.

The following text aims to present to the literary circles the abounding documental heritage of acad. Panteley Zarev, which is stored in the University Archive of Sofia University. In the span of a few years his son Vladimir Zarev submitted a rich collection of letters and notebooks of high historical value to be preserved and used by researchers. Correspondents of P. Zarev are various Bulgarian and Soviet writers and literati, in whose letters you can find interesting information, while as a whole they constitute a substantial source for the literary and cultural life in the country during the Socialism. The notebooks contain personal notes from P. Zarev from meetings at a high state level, impressions from traveling abroad with government delegations, etc., which demonstrate a different point of view from the official information about these occasions.

Rosyjskie skrzydlate słowa w polskim dyskursie internetowym

This article is devoted to the functioning of Russian winged words in the Polish Internet discourse. The analysis of the material collected from a variety of websites, blogs, comments, and demotivators showed that Russian winged words are present in the statements of Internet users. In newspaper articles and news programmes, the author or the source of the winged word appears more often, while the authors of blogs and demotivators use Russian units which have lost the link with the source and are easily modifiable. Most often, in the statements of young people there are those that do not require linguistic and cultural competences; they constitute unnamed, permanent expressions for the broadcasters. It can therefore be assumed that the younger generation (including the authors of demotivators) use Russian winged words without being aware of their origin, and their lexicon includes those that are universal in their meaning and do not carry additional contexts.

Interpunkcja i składnia w pracach studentów pedagogiki — norma i uzus

The paper focuses on the ignoring of selected punctuation standards in texts prepared by pedagogy students at the University of Silesia. The analysis includes the description of some punctuation experiences, such as not using essential commas for separation, among others, of subordinate sentences (and/or participial sentence equivalents), interconnected with the superior sentence; separation of the subject group and the predicate group with a comma (as a consequence of following a prosody in the distribution of commas); irregular normative policy (as a consequence, among others, of ignorance of punctuation enumeration). The conclusion highlights didactic and normative recommendations in terms of modern Polish punctuation. It includes the necessity to record, register and analyse new punctuation tendencies in texts written in Polish, such as the ignorance of selected punctuation standards, and the turn towards secondary orality, following the impact of English punctuation.
