About SF and Fantasy through Artificial Intelligence

About SF and Fantasy through Artificial Intelligence

Author(s): Rodica Gabriela Chira / Language(s): English / Issue: 26/2014

Keywords: Artificial Intelligence; Hard SF; Fantasy; Science; Love.

Set in a rather remote future, Steven Spielberg’s film Artificial Intelligence (2001) tells the story of a childlike android named David programmed with the ability to love. Having as starting point a SF short story, namely Brian Aldiss’ Super-Toys Last All Summer Long (1969) and a novel for children, Carlo Collodi’s Adventures of Pinocchio (1883), Ian Watson, a British science-fiction writer, created a very interesting screen script. The movie marks the continuity of the specific need human beings have for stories as well as for love. It thus proves to be a combination between hard SF and fantasy. Our paper would mainly underline some changes in fiction about possible and impossible worlds throughout time with an accent on the balance between natural and artificial.

Visual Framing of Intertexts in Political Reversing Mirror Websites

Visual Framing of Intertexts in Political Reversing Mirror Websites

Author(s): Camelia Cmeciu,Monica PĂTRUȚ / Language(s): English / Issue: 17/2012

Keywords: intertextuality; stereotypes; blocker-objects.

Political reversing mirror websites have become a sign of online democracy since citizens can create their own content having politicians as their ”raw” material. Since 2007 this type of active online participation has prevailed in Romania especially during negative campaigns. The ads which undermine the opponent politicians focus on intertexts where the blocker-objects transfer new meanings upon the politicians. The outcome of this meaning exchange is the shaping of some stereotypes the politicians are associated with. The main aim of our paper is to provide a comparative content analysis of the reversing mirror websites of the three main political candidates in the 2009 Romanian elections (Traian Băsescu - the Liberal Democratic Party, Mircea Geoană - the Social Democratic Party and Crin Antonescu - the Liberal National Party).

Keywords: tourism; culture; destination; economic crisis; Romania; Transylvania.

The present paper dealt with the manner how cultural tourism is perceived and how it can develop under the conditions of the economic crisis situation. A primary stage of a research has been carried out – respectively, 196 questionnaires have been tested on a randomly selected population of Romanians. This phase represents a starting point of further researches on this topic. The results can be considered valuable but not fully representative. The main concerns of our paper are: the present-day development of cultural tourism in Romania and Transylvania (especially in the County of Cluj); Romanian visitors’ attitude towards: culture and tourism; their holiday consumption behavior; their budgetary allocations for tourism and culture; the notoriety of several types of destinations from Romania, Transylvania and Cluj County. Our conclusions try to signal a few things that must be done concerning tourism and cultural development in Romania while confronting the economic crisis.

The Founding of Right-Wing movement in interwar Bucovina: the case of the National-Christian Defense League

Constituirea Ligii Apărării Naţional Creştine în Bucovina,1923-1926

Author(s): Radu Florian Bruja / Language(s): Romanian / Issue: 1-2/2011

Keywords: extremism; nationalism; anti-semitism; regionalism; inter-war Romania

The interwar period represented for Bukovina the connection to the Romanian national state from an administrative, economic and political point of view. After the Union, the electoral and agrarian reforms were felt. The political life focused on two main ideas: the rapid integration within the Romanian state structures, respectively the preservation of a large local autonomy. Thus, the first conflicts with minorities appeared in Bucovina, of which the most resounding were the ones with the Jewish. The anti-Semitism in Bucovina was not a trend specific only for the interwar period. It also existed during the Austrian period, but it manifested in a latent and much less violent way to take strident forms. The enemies of centralism and of the minorities’ role in the economic and political life of the province grouped around Ion Zelea Codreanu, deputy of the Democrat Nationalist Party. In 1923, in Campulung Moldovenesc, it took place the congress for the incorporation of the organization Liga Apararii Nationale Crestine din Bucovina L.A.N.C. (National-Christian Defense League of Bucovina) and the Codreanu’s group, the organizations of the Bucovina Archers, the members of the Romanian National Fascia, the local anti-Semites, the former fighters in the Autro- Hungarian army and others adhered to.

Copyright and Related Rights on the Cinematographic Work: the Rights Arising from the Existence of the Cinematographic Work

Dreptul de autor şi drepturi conexe asupra operei cinematografice: drepturile generate de existenţa operei cinematografice

Author(s): Monica Florina Bota Moisin / Language(s): Romanian / Issue: 2/2014

Keywords: moral rights of the author, moral rights of the performer (actor), reproduction rights, private copy, the concept of fair-use; neighbouring rights; right of withdrawal; duration of copyright protection under Romanian Law

Second in a trilogy that tackles Romanian Copyright and Neighbouring Rights in Cinema, this paper specifically addresses the substance of the rights a cinematographic creation generates. Unlike the United States’ legal system that does not recognise the concept of „moral authorship rights”, the Romanian Legal system – following the continental legal reasoning – operates with two distinct set of rights: moral rights and patrimonial rights in cinema law. For how long can a film benefit from copyright protection? Do the patrimonial rights of the director, producer or the actors have an „expiration date”?

The Man Behind the 25th Hour. Constantin Virgil Gheorghiu in the Securitate Files

Omul din spatele Orei 25. Constantin Virgil Gheorghiu în dosarele Securităţii

Author(s): Maxim (Iuliu-Marius) Morariu / Language(s): Romanian / Issue: 8/2017

Keywords: Securitate; surveillance; Romanian exile; Romanian Orthodox Patriarchy; Justinian Marina

In this research, based on the documents provided by the National Council for the Study of Securitate Archives (CNSAS), but also on many other information from sources like diaries (Monica Lovinescu, Virgil Ierunca, or Neagu Djuvara ones), Mircea Eliade's correspondence, documents from personal archive of Thierry Gillyboeuf, the legatee of Virgil Gheorghiu, studies and articles (dedicated specially to Gheorghiu's literary work, his life and activity, Monica Lovinescu's biography and activity as translator, radio reporter or writer, or to the interwar literature and s.o.), the author presents the way how the image of Virgil Gheorghiu is reflected in the documents of the Securitate Archives (in a few dossiers from External Securitate Service, that contain the surveillance reports about the aforementioned writer, information about his life, his relationships with other members of Romanian exile from Paris, other important Romanian or foreign personalities and s.o.), but also information about his most important book (which was, soon after its publication from 1948, at Plon Press from Paris, translated in 33 languages and later, screened with Anthony Queens as a principal character, in 1967, at almost two decades after the first edition published in France in Feux Croises collection).Important writer of the Romanian exile from France, author of the known book 25th Hour, translated, as we have already mentioned, in many languages and screened, but also of books like The second chance, The Cravache, From the 25th hour to the hour of eternity, God receives only in the Sundays, The skin coat, The great exterminator or Why did they have told me Virgil, where he denounces the horrors of communist regime from Romania (but also some abuses of the Nazis one), Gheorghiu was also a controversial personality. His conflict with Monica Lovinescu (that has accused him for not paying their translation rights and, because he refused to accept their accusations and have lost a process, determined Virgil Ierunca, her husband, to start to discredit him, by translating some parts of his younger works like The banks of the Dniester are burning and I fought in Crimeea, written during the Second World War, where he speaks about legionaries, Nazi soldiers and Jewish people, and presenting him as a sympathizer of the first two categories), transformed him into an isolated Romanian personality of the exile. This is the reason why, now, he is not enough investigated by the contemporary researchers, and important aspects of his biography must be rediscovered, and the reason of this research.

Communicating Museums: A Textual Analysis of Content and Interaction Management

Author(s): Monica Bîră / Language(s): English / Issue: 4/2018

Keywords: toys museum; communication management; content management; textual analysis

Museums, through their institutional discourses, are playing an important but sometimes neglected role in enforcing social practices and creating social identities. With the new digital era, museums had to adapt to new forms of communication: in an environment that, at least, gives everybody an equal voice, museums managed to communicate themselves without renouncing their position of depositaries of knowledge and authority. By analyzing online communication, through content management and interaction management (on websites, Facebook pages) the current study aims to explore the mechanisms enabling museums to convey information about their specific features (space, access, learning and interpreting) while retaining a main role not only as communicators, but also as actors reinforcing the larger system of beliefs and knowledge that govern what counts as right or wrong, good or bad, normal or abnormal, in a particular society. Thus, by combining communication seen as a management tool and textual analysis, this study illustrates the application of diverse qualitative research methods in the fields of management, and, specifically, in the field of communication management.

Technical Vocabulary: How Is it Learned? How Is it Taught?

Author(s): Monica Negoescu / Language(s): English / Issue: 4/2019

Keywords: learning technical vocabulary; ESP teaching; teaching technical terms;

The technical vocabulary is regarded by the technical student as more difficult than the general one due to its abstractness. The present article focuses on a few particularities of learning and teaching technical terms since this is an important part of professional communication. Divided into four parts, it presents the way in which the technical student learns and acquires the new specialized vocabulary, the strategies he uses, how he copes with the challenges of a reading assignment. From a different perspective, there is the teacher who must be fully aware of the way in which the student learns so that he can choose the best strategies and the proper time to teach this type of vocabulary. The teacher must encourage, support the students in their effort to improve the acquiring of knew specialized vocabulary by making them aware of the possible strategies they could use.

Intangible cultural heritage: narrativity and digitization. Discursive interferences

Patrimoine culturel immatériel : narrativité et digitalisation. Interférences discursives

Author(s): Florinela Floria / Language(s): French / Issue: 26/2019

Keywords: patrimoine culturel immatériel; narrativité; identité; communication culturelle;

The definition of intangible cultural heritage proposed by UNESCO focuses on the substance of popular culture, practices and knowledge, because that treasure is being found onto the deepest level of a certain community. The preservation of intangible heritage should be joint to its discursive setup, within the contextual framework to which it belongs to: as a testimony of the cultural heritage, the discourse on the immaterial inheritance makes tangible the fabric of meanings through the essence of traditions. The intangible heritage research methodology therefore supports the narrative communication form, in order to collect and to record the traditional culture facts. One of the objectives of the eCultfood project consists of the preservation of the food heritage of the Bacau region (Romania) through its digitization. In our study, we propose an analysis of the dual narrative condition of the food heritage discourse. We aim at the approach of narrativity perceived as ethnocultural insertion modality of the food story, but also as a complex communication structure for the investigation of popular culture.

Turkish Movies in Former Ottoman Territories: Propaganda or Just an Efficient Soft Power in Turkish Foreign Policy?

Author(s): Ecaterina Maţoi,Diana-Monica Constantin / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2021

Keywords: Central Asia;dizi soft power;propaganda;Ottoman Empire;

The spread of propaganda by state or non-state actors through movies started almost a century ago. At the same time, the procedures used in movie production diversified and became more specialised, hence nowadays, a special product among the ones made for media channels attracts the eye of specialists in the field of influential communication: Turkish movie series focusing on former Ottoman Empire’s glorious past. Many such series have succeeded in conquering the audience from the Arab Peninsula and other parts of the world, particularly the series “Diriliș: Ertuğrul”. This movie series, expanding on the legend of 8th century Muslim Oghuz Turks from Anatolia fighting against Christian Byzantines, crusaders and Mongols, was banned in Arab countries such as Saudi Arabia and Egypt, but enjoys high popularity in other countries. Current research aims to analyse essential elements from the above-mentioned movie series that might significantly influence public opinions and sentiments of population from the Arab countries that banned it, in order to answer the question from title.

ADDED VALUE OF THE EU CHARTER OF FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS TO OTHER HUMAN RIGHTS INSTRUMENTS

Author(s): Marcela Monica Stoica / Language(s): English / Issue: Supliment/2016

Keywords: Charter; human rights; European; national;

After almost seven years since the Charter entries into force is still not yet an explicit and regular element in the procedures applied for scrutinising the legality or assessing the impact of legislation in the EU Member States. Other international human rights instruments, such as the ECHR, tend to be more systematically included in such procedures. So, this paper aims at analyzing one of the measure that can help at strengthen the Charter’s role in the legislative processes at national level. We shall focus on Article 51 (field of application) –that could part of the assessment of the impact and legality of draft legislation. Thus, we can conclude that the Charter is a added value not only in respect with other instrument regarding the human rights but also that can be a more complete instrument for the national legislation on human rights, that bring, indeed, an “added value” in this field.

Author(s): Marcela Monica Stoica / Language(s): English / Issue: Supliment2/2017

Keywords: Euro skeptical; communication; leadership; European citizens;

Alongside the history of European Union there were some members that were traditionally Euro skeptical. But the last events and Euro-barometers indicate a worrying rise of this phenomenon and the consolidation of the anti-system parties. We believe and try to demonstrate that the cause of all these are not only the economic and financial crises but the lack of trust and cooperation, between the two fundamental actors involved in political process of the Union, the political establishment and the European citizens.

The situation caused by the pandemic imposed drastic changes in social interaction, which changed human relationships, imposed physical barriers to communication and made people very lonely.The online school and sometimes the total lack of social interaction of children and adolescents left traces in their psycho-emotional state. The need for teenagers to interact came in stark contrast to the lifestyle of the past year. This has led to depressive and anxious states or to the exacerbation of those preceding the pandemic.I noticed much greater requests for advice in this regard and I followed in the dynamics the transformations of the psyche of adolescents, evaluating as deeply as possible their condition and looking for the best methods of improvement.

At the turn of a quarter of a century since nascency, the thematic issue of our review is dedicated to a central problem of the historian’s work, that is the issue of primary sources, from the perspective of new methods of research and their interpretation. By this initiative, we wanted to extend an invitation to a reflection on the current relevance of history and its opening towards the application of some new methods of investigation suggested by the general evolution of knowledge. Of course, the sources of history essentially are still texts, artefacts and facts, and their older differentiation in traditions and vestiges is still timely, implying interesting theoretical debates, but the manner in which the researchers relate to these is permanently changing. Our review, after surpassing the search from the incipient period and, in an emphasised manner, after moving on to the exclusive publishing of thematic volumes, distinguished itself through the proposal of such new perspectives of investigating the past, which imply resorting to new sources or re-evaluating the interpretations bestowed on the traditional sources. This was the reason for organising a methodological workshop dedicated to new themes, sources and methods in historical research, which took place in Alba Iulia, on June 4 of the current year, which also proposed a suitable reflection on the tendencies of the Romanian historiography of the last three decades and its perspectives. The present volume contains part of the communications presented on that occasion, although others are relevant as well, but which could not be included in the volume. Conducted in two major sections – archaeology and cultural heritage and history – the workshop mentioned created the occasion for debates on some diverse methods of research applied to the sources.

Presenting in English: A Challenge for the Technical Student?

Author(s): Monica Negoescu / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2022

Keywords: presenting in English; PowerPoint; technical student; challenges; improvisation games;

One of the technical student’s challenges when learning English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is to deliver a presentation in this foreign language on a technical subject. The present paper, far from being exhaustive research of the matter, regards the problems a student at the Technical University in Cluj faces when having to communicate in the form of a presentation. These problems include lack of self-confidence with its consequences, body language, (mis)use of software (mainly PowerPoint), and the unclear structure of information to be presented. As the students’ level of language is upper intermediate, we can focus on solving the previously mentioned problems during the weekly 2-hour seminar. This article will also include some solutions that have been found and used in the case of the students with difficulties in presenting.
