Rewriting Personal Stories in Brick Lane by Monica Ali and Half a Life by V. S. Naipaul

Rewriting Personal Stories in Brick Lane by Monica Ali and Half a Life by V. S. Naipaul

Author(s): Anna Bysiecka / Language(s): English / Issue: 05/2006

Keywords: post-colonialism; fragmented identities; hybrids; cultural transplantation; V. S. Naipaul; M. Ali

Ice-Skating in a Black Leather Suit Body Politics: Difference, Domination and Subversion in Monica Ali’s Brick Lane and Randal Kleiser’s Grease

Author(s): Magdalena Vázquez Amer / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2011

Keywords: body politics; food; clothing; dominant discourse; "the other"

The common trait between Monica Ali’s novel Brick Lane’s main character, Nazneen, and motion picture Grease’s female protagonist, Sandy Olsson is that both of them refuse to be culturally constructed by the patriarchal dominant discourse. Following Kathy Davis’ distinction when defining the main approaches to body politics, in this essay there we will discuss ‘difference, domination and subversion’. These main issues will be analysed at three levels: food, clothing and dancing, thus covering the inside of the body, the outside, and the use the protagonists make of it through movement, respectively.

I know it’s not an usual situation for you but I don’t care who says what and I especially don’t care who thinks what. After all, you have come to me to congratulate on the opening, I guess not for the sake of my eyes but because you found my text good, there’s nothing special about two men sitting down after the opening of an exhibition with something to drink so as to talk about the artworks and this and that. I have known Gyuri for about ten years now, you were still a child when I discovered him for myself and then for the public, I opened his exhibition first in ’94 in Veszprém, in the Castle, in the gallery opposite the Archbishop’s Palace. Or rather the Bishop’s Palace at that time, it has become the Archbishop’s Palace since then as there was some reorganization in the church and, even though the comitat grew smaller, the bishop became archbishop.

Immigration, Integration, Dislocation: the Herculean Labours of the Self in Monica Ali’s Brick Lane

Immigration, integration, dislocation : les travaux hérculéens du Moi dans Brick Lane par Monica Ali

Author(s): Laura Monica Toma / Language(s): English / Issue: 37/2020

Keywords: multicultural conflict; immigrants; disembedded self; cultural heritage; forms of femininity ;

Brick Lane offers the reader a fascinating insight into the universe of the British Bengali community in London, foregrounding a panoply of human experiences, from the trials and tribulation of the immigrants to the emancipation of the female protagonist. This paper investigates the nature of the multicultural conflict that the novel foregrounds, revealing the fact that the immigrant is a disembedded self, torn between the desire to preserve his cultural heritage and the need to adapt in order to survive in the great metropolis of London. As the novel chronicles the protagonist’s transformation from a shy girl into an independent woman who takes charge of her life, I shall also explore the fashioning of the feminine self and look into matters such as dependence, social roles, forms of femininity.

I choose to talk about the book "Parental resources and children’s education: A comparative perspective for Poland and Romania", authored by Monica Marin, published by Lumen Publishing House, in 2018, as a result of a desire to know the news in the field of education, from a sociological perspective, both as a professor and as a doctoral student. The interest for the research of the specialized literature regarding the child, the parents and the mutual influences in the sphere of educational services are topics approached in my doctoral research.

„Fove Precantes, Trinitas!” The Beneficent Influence of Saint Monica through Unceasing Prayers and Words of the Spirit, in the Dialogues of Cassiciacum

„Fove precantes, trinitas!” Influența binefăcătoare a Sfintei Monica, mama Fericitului Augustin, prin rugăciuni necontenite și cuvinte ale Duhului, în „Dialogurile” de la Cassiciacum

Author(s): Liviu Petcu / Language(s): Romanian / Issue: 9-12 Suppl/2022

Keywords: St. Monica; Blessed Augustine; Dialogues; Cassiciacum; conversion; influence;

No study of St. Monica, however brief it may be, can be considered complete without an examination of her role in Cassiciacum’s Dialogues. Here we find her participating in philosophical discussions, a role that apparently does not match the portrait provided in Confessiones. In this study, in which both Monica’s speeches in Dialogues and Augustine’s comments on them are carefully analyzed, we aim to emphasize that we should not come across an unforeseen intellectual face, but rather a Monica as an epitome of those women who reached, by recourse to God, to the Holy Scripture, especially to the Book of Psalms, as well as to the liturgical tradition of the Church, by participating twice a day in divine services in the church, wisdom and a certain understanding of the truths of the Christian religion, a position which Augustine is suddenly ready to appreciate. This is supported by his commentary on his mother’s first contribution, when he confesses that he understood the source and how divine this source, from which her words spring, was (De beata vita, 10). Augustine is now prepared not only to respect and accept her wisdom springing from Christian faith, but also, in his presentation, to optimize and highlight Monica’s ideas, using them to illustrate this new acceptance of the importance of authority in a religious dimension.
