The Romanian or the Moldavian Language? Language as an artificial boundary among the inhabitants of a new state

Author(s): Alin Rus / Language(s): English / Issue: 19/2010

Keywords: Eastern Europe; Communist Heritage; Ideology of Boundaries; Language Politics; Moldavian Language; Romanian Language.

This article briefly discusses the idea of boundary as it appears in the history of anthropology and focuses as a case study on the ex-soviet Republic called Moldavia and its language after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the creation of a new state: Moldavia Republic. Using the tools and methods of Cultural Anthropology I will show how, in Moldavia Republic the traces of the artificial boundaries drawn during Soviet times are still visible today. One of these boundaries is the artificial distinction between Moldavian and Romanian language as two separate languages and between Moldavian people and Romanian people as two separate ethnic groups. My main argument in this article is that the very long and convoluted discourse focusing on language politics in a new state, the Moldavian Republic, is a consequence of the artificial boundaries that were imposed in all the aspects of the public life during Soviet time.

Globalization and Social Policy

Author(s): Monica Bucurenciu / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2009

Keywords: globalization; policy; divergence; convergence; institutions

Responses to globalization are not uniform. The impact of globalization on social policies differs according to the political and social institutions. The way in which the idea of globalization is interpreted at the political discourse level is also quite relevant for future policies. On the other hand, globalization can also reflect a politically convenient rationale for implementing unpopular neo-liberal economic strategies. The social and political impact of globalization is mediated by domestic institutional structures, state strategies and the state’s location in the global order.

Anti-Corruption Efforts at the EU Level: Achievements as Policy Goal, Challenges as Policy Tools

Anti-Corruption Efforts at the EU Level: Achievements as Policy Goal, Challenges as Policy Tools

Author(s): Author Not Specified / Language(s): English / Issue: 05/2011

Parliamentary representatives of EU members old and new – Spain and Austria, Slovenia and Romania – seemed to have flocked together as (corrupt) birds of a (democratic) feather, as the now famous Sunday Times investigation disclosed in March 2011. The British newspaper’s undercover reporters, pretending to be lobbyists, alleged that Spanish MEP Pablo Zalba, Slovenian MEP Zoran Thaler, Austrian MEP Ernst Strasser and Romanian MEP Adrian Severin were prepared to take bribes in return for political favors. Yet the already notorious lobby scandal is not the focus of the current analysis. Rather, it serves to raise interest in what is an emerging trend: political consensus around a perception of corruption as a policy goal common to old and new member states, and thus an inherent demand for common tools.

Romanian Post-War Literary Exile – Necessary Accents and Nuances

Romanian Post-War Literary Exile – Necessary Accents and Nuances

Exilul literar românesc postbelic – accente şi nuanţări necesare

Author(s): Dumitru-Mircea Buda / Language(s): Romanian / Issue: 15/2013

Keywords: exile; literature; communism; fascism; Monica Lovinescu

As it is interweaved with the rise of nations and the fall of the great European empires, the exile encodes, in its morphology, the effects of the global political conflicts from which the two global wars of the century arise. The installation of two successive totalitarianisms, Fascism and Communism, generates two corresponding exiles in Europe, the anatomy of which we decided to study complementary, by reciprocal mirroring, according to John Neubauer suggestions.

Régente négy vendégszobát mûködtettek, afféle kisebb panziót, házuk már a fürdôteleprôl jól látszott, magas homlokzata, emelete messzirôl ide csalogatta a vendégeket.

GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS ON THE STATE OF CONSERVATION OF NUMISMATIC COLLECTIONS FROM THE COUNTY HERITAGE MUSEUM OF HISTORY AND ART ZALĂU

CONSIDERAŢII GENERALE PRIVIND STAREA DE CONSERVARE A COLECŢIILOR NUMISMATICE AFLATE ÎN PATRIMONIUL MUZEULUI JUDEŢEAN DE ISTORIE ŞI ARTĂ ZALĂU

Author(s): Monica Druţă / Language(s): Romanian / Issue: 2/2011

Keywords: muzeu; Muzeul Judeţean de Istorie şi Artă Zalău; monede; conservare; degradări; colecţie.

This paper seeks to provide an overview of the state of conservation of the numismatic collections from the county Museum of History and Art from Zalau, by identifying the main forms of degradation with which it is faced. The numismatic collections of the county Museum of History and Art Zalau include 9810 coins from various periods of history of county Salaj. Numismatic objects that are part of our collections are composed of gold, silver, bronze (copper), nickel and iron. In the first part of the paper a presentation is made of the values of microclimatic factors; we mean here in particular relative humidity and temperature, and an overview of storage space (repository number 1) is maintained throughout the numismatic collection of the County Museum of History Art and Zalau. Relative humidity and temperature monitoring was performed during the period 01/09/2009 to 05/30/2010 and was executed with a termohigrometre. The conclusion was that monitoring these parameters and the conditions under which the record is the number one store does not fall within the permissible limits for the storage of numismatic collections. The proposed solution is the exterior wall insulation and buying a dehumidifier to ensure a drop in the value until the relative humidity will be within the parameters set out in the rules of conservation. The next step was to check the conservation status of the objects that make up the numismatic collections. For a correct statement of the conservation status a magnifying visual inspection of each item in these collections was carried out. Checking the conservation status of degradation resulted in the division of faced numismatic pieces into four categories depending on the factors that produce them: 1. Degradations occurring during and after the technological process of producing the coin; 2. Degradation in the era in which coins were used; 3. Degradations in the period after active use of coins; 4. Degradation arising from deposition in the ground; 5. Degradations occurring during the coins preservation in the museum. A good knowledge of the damage to numismatic collections in museums helps us to understand the factors and mechanisms that produce them, and thus eliminating those which threaten the existence of these priceless pieces of history for the scientific community.

From Ethics, Integrity and Moral Probity to Responsible Research and Innovation in Current Educational Practices

Author(s): Laura Monica Gorghiu / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2016

Keywords: ethics; integrity; moral probity; responsible research and innovation; education; editorial.

As other social domains, the area of education is in a strong interdependence with environmental contexts, being in accordance with the economic conditions, political decisions, technological development and, not in the end, the demographic dynamics. Changes in all the above-mentioned aspects lead to modification of several educational variables. However, the actual educational settings and practices must take into consideration the future, projecting and addressing in this respect, the major challenges that will occur in the society in the following decades. In education, there were recorded a series of changes in theoretical frameworks or paradigms over the past decades. We have to admit that not all of them proved to be good or welcome, mostly in the cases when some of them were introduced considering the temporary social changes, limiting their evolution to a specific era or developmental goal or educational cult (Lindgren, 2013). But, it is obvious that paradigms or concepts which answer to the actual societal developments, which help the students in the process of becoming future responsible citizens, are more than welcome and beneficial. In this respect, this number of the Romanian Journal of Multidimensional Education tries to offer some answers to possible educational values of equity, integrity or relevance principles, together with the possibilities of exploiting the dimensions of Responsible Research and Innovation in the actual education.

Students' and parents' beliefs about intelligence and school performance

Students' and parents' beliefs about intelligence and school performance

Author(s): Delia Bîrle,Monica Secui,Andreea Vuşcan / Language(s): English / Issue: 18/2016

Keywords: implicit theories of intelligence; growth goals; performance; learning goals; personal best

Implicit theories of intelligence include entity theory and incremental theory. Entity theorists argue that intelligence is fixed and cannot be modified throughout life. Incremental theorists believe that intelligence can be developed through effort. This study took into account the perceptions of students and parents, to see if they share opinions regarding the nature of intelligence and perception of the role/effort in getting performance. The results showed the most children have joined the same theory as their parents, also sharing the same views on the role talent/effort in getting performance.

Rhetoric and psychology: an attempt to define the psychological profile of the Romanians

Author(s): Monica Geanina Coca / Language(s): English / Issue: 26/2018

Keywords: phraséologie; psychologie; rhétorique; mental; roumain;

Soils’ alteration in the the Izvorul Muntelui Lake watershed under the influence of the degradation processes

Author(s): MONICA IOANA MUSCALU / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2019

Keywords: land use; degradation; productivity; soil quality; degradation processes;

In the Izvorul Muntelui Lake watershed, soil degradation is due to agricultural activities, such as animal husbandry, specific to mountain areas, crops of corn, potato, fodder beet and vegetables, as well as the construction of communications roads, forestry and tourism activities. The relationship between human pressure and soil quality is inversely proportional to the fact that soils in the studied perimeter are also affected by unfavorable natural factors such as high relief, low temperatures, or constrictive skeleton. The deforestations in recent years emphasize the pluvial erosion and the geomorphological processes of the slope, whose intensification was observed in the basins of Bistrița, Bistricioara, Hangu, Schit, Grintieş, Bolăţău and Tifilic rivers. With a view to rendering in use degraded land and reducing soil erosion, measures are needed to limit agricultural production, reforestation, or improve soil quality in the coming years.

Getting dressed or why feminists should take this question seriously

Author(s): Mary Evans / Language(s): English / Issue: 90/2021

Keywords: feminism; equality; fashion; aesthetism; feminizm; równość; moda; estetyzm

The article deals with demands made upon women about their appearance in the 21stcentury, comments made by, and about, women and the ways in which they dress. That is the suggestion that there is a greater plurality about dress in the contemporary world than it was in the world of our grandmothers. But in place of the former strictures there are others: demands about youth and youthfulness, of forms of self association either for or against class and racialised others, of representing a human, dressed, version, of the “new”. All represent aspirations for identifying – or not – the self through dress. The question of who do we want to look like is one that is unavoidable.
