Actor and director on the radio. Chapters from the work of Jiří Horčička and Josef Melč

Herec a režisér v rozhlase. Kapitoly z tvorby Jiřího Horčičky a Josefa Melče

Author(s): Tomáš Bojda / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: acting; directing; radio drama; structuralism; semiotics; radio dramatization; Jiří Horčička; Josef Melč; Jiří Veltruský; normalization; Czechoslovak radio

The monograph deals with the problems of radio acting and radio directing. Both of these components are interrelated, in theory reflecting their creative role in the origin of radio drama. The research is focussed on the work of two important Czech radio directors: Jiří Horčička and Josef Melč and their best achievements dating back to the seventies and eighties twenties of the 20th century. Its methodology is based on the structuralist theory of Jiří Veltruský, whose structural and semiotic theory is applied to radio theory. Apart from Veltruský, the research is also grounded on the basic monographs by Czech radio theoreticians, in the first place on the publications by Jan Czech and Alena Štěrbová, and also on the theory of radio dramatization of fiction by Jan Lopatka.

I'm getting dressed, I mean, I am. Or is it really true that clothes make the man?

Oblékám se, tedy jsem. Aneb je skutečně pravda, že šaty dělají člověka?

Author(s): Jana Horáková / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: personality psychology; clothing history;fashion

This book tries to find out whether the statement "Clothes make the man" is true. Although it is a popular phrase, no one in the field of science and research has yet been able to unequivocally confirm or refute it. For this purpose, the author used a theoretical analysis of historical and contemporary concepts dealing with the relationship between personality and clothing. The book is divided into several parts. First, it deals with the definition of human personality. The second part deals with fashion. In the third part, the previous two areas are connected in the field of the psychology of clothing. The reader may get acquainted with the main representatives of the psychology of clothing or with various typologies. The final part presents the results of research, reflections on the possible benefits of this topic as well as reflections on the possibilities of further research.

He will not win who does not fight. Patriarch Shenoute III of Alexandria and the dispute over the deification of man

Nezvítězí, kdo nebojuje. Alexandrijský patriarcha Šenut III. a spor o zbožštění člověka

Author(s): Jaroslav Franc / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: Coptic Christianity; Egypt

The Church is essentially both human and divine. It is a sign of hope in which mysteries of God are revealed within the reality of human cultures. Among the main characteristics of Coptic Christianity is a tendency to the profound spirituality; the spirituality between the culture of city and the culture of desert. Throughout history the Egyptian Christian tradition has adopted Coptic, Greek and Arabic culture. From the nineteenth century onwards, also the cultural influences of modern Europe has been intensified. It brought to Egypt new theological impulses. The doctrine of the deification of man was in the second half of the twentieth century promoted in Egypt by Matthew the Poor and his disciples. And soon it became the subject of a theological dispute. It is significant for the time of cultural exchange that among the main impulses there was a compilation of texts on prayer written in English by Lazarus Moore. It actually determined the framework of his theological thinking. Among his opponents there was his former pupil and further Alexandrian patriarch Pope Shenouda III. The presented work might be described as a follow up of the already published monograph on Matthew the Poor. It presents a theological analysis of the work of the Alexandrian Patriarch Shenouda III with the focus on his critique of the doctrine of the deification of man. The analysis is a search for the causes of the dispute over the doctrine of the deification of man and it also presents the results within the context of newly emerging cultural paradigms of Coptic Christianity.

History in Ruins

Dějiny v troskách

Author(s): Lenka Hrabalová / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: cultural heritage; Middle East; North Africa

This publication deals with various factors which influence destructions and reconstructions of cultural heritage in the Middle East and North Africa. The destruction of cultural property in the Middle East and North Africa cannot be characterized as purely religious but must be seen in the context of a number of reasons, which may be related to propaganda, strategic and military reasons, or political and ethnic issues. At the same time, it must be borne in mind that jihadist groups are not the only ones that kill cultural and historical objects worth. Book is divided into three main parts. The first is a general introduction to the relevant legislation and its implementation. The second part examines the reasons for destruction and main ideas in reconstructions. It presents two types of destructions present in the region: those motivated by the religion and secular ones, explaining its existence in the Muslim society from historical, sociological, and religious perspectives. The third part is the central part of the dissertation. It consists of five case studies of five countries of the Muslim World: Syria, Iraq, Mali, Yemen, and Saudi Arabia. These studies are based on previous findings and aim to present a foundation for further comparison in the conclusion of the publication.

The world in sinograms

Svět v sinogramech

Author(s): Tereza Slaměníková,David Uher / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: chinese; sinology; linguistics; china; sign writing

Languages using a pleremic writing system, from which Chinese is undoubtedly the most widespread, show a much deeper connection between language units and their graphic representations since it involves the semantic dimension. What makes the Chinese writing system a truly unique phenomenon is how its graphics capture the meaning of the represented linguistic unit. This semantic connection was primarily established through graphic components with their own meanings, so-called determinatives. Although their use was primarily associated with an effort to distinguish by graphic means the (often too many) different meanings of one sinogram, the entire system also undoubtedly provides unique insight into how ancient Chinese experienced reality. The semantic diversity of sinograms subordinated to one determinative forms a particular network of contexts with some relationship to the basic concept. This book provides a concise Czech translation of the oldest known study on Chinese grammatology Shuo Wen Jie Zi (Meaning Explanation of Primary Sinograms and Structure Analysis of Secondary Sinograms) which endeavors to reflect on the Chinese writing system as an essential bearer of Chinese culture. Based on the procedures of Chinese cultural linguistics, it adopts the author's determinative-based setting and analyses the so-called semantic profile of all the 540 determinatives by arranging sinograms into groups sharing certain semantic features

Stimulating the metacognitive abilities of the learner. SMARTS programme - analysis of a qualitative experimental intervention

Stimulácia metakognitívnych schopností žiaka. Program SMARTS - analýza kvalitatívnej experimentálnej intervencie

Author(s): Iveta Kovalčíková,Ivana Martinková / Language(s): Slovak

Keywords: learners; school unachievement; psychology of learning and instruction; educational programs; metacognition; self-regulated learning; educational research

The monograph is the product of theoretical and empirical research into the metacognitive and executive functioning of pupils. The purpose of the theoretical part is to characterize the concept of executive functioning and indicate its connection with the related concepts of metacognition and self-regulation. This analysis is placed in a broader, partially historical discourse on thinking and cognition in philosophy and psychology. Further, the subject of attention is the stimulation of the student's cognitive, metacognitive and executive functioning. The SMARTS metacognitive curriculum (a product of the Research Institute for Development and Education, Lexington, Massachusetts, USA) is analyzed. SMARTS was adapted and verified in Slovak conditions within the project VEGA 1/0254/20. The monograph presents the results of an experimental qualitative intervention aimed at determining the impact of the intervention through SMARTS on the student's metacognitive abilities. Based on the results of the intervention, it is possible to think about the positive impact of SMARTS on the behavioral manifestations of the executive functioning of pupils and indirectly on school performance.

Author(s): Milan Klement,Kvetoslav Bartek / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: information technology; computer literacy; computer science; computational thinking

The constant development of information and communication technologies, including their implementation in education, has been imposing new demands on both pupils and teachers of IT subjects, who must be prepared to respond to this development. Thus, the submitted monograph attempted to provide answers to some of the questions regarding the extent to which it is possible to develop pupils 'or students' digital literacy and computational skills, and how the use of these approaches and methods is perceived by IT teachers. Within the framework of the described research, we were looking for answers to the increasingly pressing issues which will need to be addressed in connection with the planned implementation of the Digital Education Strategy by 2020.

Howard Jacobson´s Novels in the Context of Contemporary British Jewish Literature

Author(s): Petr Anténe / Language(s): English

Keywords: English fiction; Jewish literature; Jewry; literary themes; literary criticism and history; interpretation and reception of literature

The novelist Howard Jacobson, who received the 2010 Booker Prize for The Finkler Question, has often been characterized as the ""British Philip Roth"",although he himself prefers to be viewed as the ""Jewish Jane Austen"". This monograph concludes that both comparisons may be used to comment on various features of Jacobson's oeuvre. Like Roth, Jacobson tends to focus on male Jewish protagonists and intimate relations between the sexes. Like Austen, he portrays a certain social class, whether it be the British Jewish minority or the social world of British writers and university professors. Apart from reflecting on the tension between Britishness and Jewishness as inseparable aspects of his characters' identities, Jacobson's novels contribute to the traditions of British and Jewish humour.

The monography deals with topic of character education in connection to literature at elementary school. We conducted a long-year experiment where the experimental groups didn't use readers but the texts were chosen by us and we used them to work on their values. Our idea was to prepare literature classes that would be interesting and meaningful to pupils, motivating them to read more. The used methods were questionnaires, observation and interviews. This book contains the theoretical information connected to reading, motivation and character education and offers the practical experience and data from our experiment together with examples of lesson plans and pupils' art and essays. It is aimed at students of teaching and teachers, especially teachers of literature.

Speak up! A short manual for students (and everyone else) in how to present stuff in front of an audience

Author(s): Markus Öbrink / Language(s): English

Keywords: rhetoric; communication skills; presentation of information

In today’s world, where everything seems to be digital and impersonal, being able to talk directly to people is still necessary. Yet, most of us are nervous, even afraid, of standing there on the stage. This text focuses on the kind of presentations students and academic staff need to do as part of their studies and work, and is aimed at students with English as second language. However, the ideas presented are just as valid for all other forms of presenting. You don’t have to be a student or an academic to use this book; rather the opposite. The basic principles are the same in the business world, in entertainment, in politics, or in any other field you might be active in. Anybody could use this short manual to learn how to present.

Pragmalinguistic and Sociopragmatic Perspectives on Selected Communications of (Not Only) Media Discourse

Pragmalingvistické a sociopragmatické pohledy na vybrané komunikáty (nejenom) mediálního diskurzu

Author(s): Jindřiška Svobodová / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: human communication; communication; communication in mass media; communication skills; discourse analysis; critical analysis; pragmatics; sociolinguistics

"The authors of the monograph deal with pragmalinguistic and sociopragmatic aspects of communicative activity in three relatively separate units. The first section examines the process of pragmaticalization of particles and the importance of their acquisition in foreign language acquisition and the formation of communicative competence. In the second section, the means used as a tool of impoliteness and verbal aggression are investigated. The so-called discursive politeness methodology based on the concept of face is applied to authentic texts and evaluates politeness strategies against the background of existing relational networks of the current social and communicative situation. In the final part of the thesis, the authors, using the methods of critical discourse analysis, carry out a qualitative and quantitative evaluation of media texts dealing with the issue of migration."

Physical activity and physical fitness of Czech adolescents in the context of the urban environment

Pohybová aktivita a tělesná zdatnost českých adolescentů v kontextu zastavěného prostředí

Author(s): Lukáš Rubín / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: adolescents; physical fitness; movement activity; health care research; urban ecology; man and environment; population health status

The aim of the study is to estimate the strength of associations between physical activity, physical fitness and the built environment among 11-19 year old adolescents living in the Czech Republic. The study includes 1745 participants from 2013-2016. Physical activity was measured with the IPEN Adolescent Questionnaire and a pedometer or accelerometer. Physical fitness was tested using the INDARES system report. Built environment was identified using the IPEN Adolescent questionnaire and possibly also using geographic information systems. Only 43% of adolescents met health recommendations for physical activity, 47% of individuals could be described as physically fit. Adolescents fulfilling the recommendation are more physically fit than individuals not fulfilling the recommendation, yet the relationship between physical activity and selected physical fitness indicators reaches low dependence.

While English is the lingua franca and an established language in numerous countries, it is its American variant that keeps spreading rapidly to other parts of the world due to the wide ranging influence of the USA in politics, economics and popular culture. The nine authors of this volume present various aspects associated with the perception of the USA, whether it be American English, a theme in American literature and culture or an analysis of their reception in and/or influence on the Czech Republic or Austria. As all of the contributors work or study at an educational institution that prepares future teachers, most of the chapters either discuss the students’ or pupils’ point of view on the topic or provide another connection to the process of foreign language teaching.
