Dramatist Max Zweig - prophet of the new humanism

Dramatik Max Zweig – prorok nového humanismu

Author(s): Ivana Cahová / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: authors writing in German; Jewish authors; Moravian German literature; Jewish literature; literary influences; literature and society; literature and politics; identity in literature; interpretation and reception of literature

The publication deals with the life and work of Max Zweig, a native of Moravia, German-language Jewish playwright from Israel. The aim of this work is to make Zweig’s early literary and dramatic texts, so far absent in literary history, visible and accessible (especially to Czech professional public and Czech readers). This interdisciplinary work, oscillating between literary-analytical and cultural-historical studies, analyses Zweig’s artistic texts in the socio-political and cultural discourses of Moravia in a breakthrough period between the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and the first Czechoslovak Republic, of Vienna and of Berlin in the interwar period and in the early years of the Shoah, and of Tel Aviv in the last years of the British Mandate, during the pioneering building of the “Jewish homeland” and in the dramatic period following the establishment of an independent State of Israel. Through these discourses and on the basis of Zweig’s biography that they formed, this work tries to analyse in what environment and how a Central European Jewish identity was formed in the 20th century and at the same time to point out the specifics of German-language literature in Israel as an “interspace” literature that cannot be to explored through the lens of history of only one cultural and aesthetic tradition.

Dear Miloš: Letters of Bohuslav Martinů to Miloš Šafránek

Milý Miloši: Dopisy Bohuslava Martinů Miloši Šafránkovi

Author(s): Vít Zouhar,Gabriela Coufalová / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: composers; friends and associates; musical life

A collection of correspondence with Miloš Šafránek, Czech diplomat, music publicist, promoter of the work and biographer of B. Martinů contains diplomatic transcriptions of one hundred and sixty-eight letters, six postcards, five correspondence notes, one telegram and one sticker from the period 1928-1959. The correspondence is mostly one-sided, addressed to M. Šafránek, with M. Šafránek being the sender of only two items. The authors of the edition respect the specifics of Martinů's linguistic expression, which is why they chose the method of diplomatic transcription of letters. The entire text is supplemented by extensive annotation, which not only illuminates the historical context and the political situation in the most turbulent years of the 20th century, but also comments on the genesis of the works, the circumstances of performing, recording and publishing Martinů's compositions.

The rise of Dutch grammar. On grammaticalisation and other related developments in the history of Dutch

De opkomst van de Nederlandse grammatica. Over grammaticalisatie en andere verwante ontwikkelingen in de geschiedenis van het Nederlands

Author(s): Martin Konvička / Language(s): Dutch

Keywords: Dutch language; grammaticalization; grammar; historical linguistics

Grammaticalization has received a great deal of attention in recent decades. This paper reflects on the debates and uses their results to look at the processes in Dutch. The author understands grammaticalization as those processes that lead to the emergence of new or change in existing grammatical structures. The thesis contains three thematic units. The first illuminates the development of thinking about grammaticalization in a philosophical and linguistic context from the 19th century to the present day. It deals with the understanding of grammaticalization processes in the pre-structuralist conception of linguistics, as well as the relations of generative linguistics to the study of grammaticalization. The second part focuses on a critical discussion of the main themes in the current literature on grammaticalization. In the third part, theoretical accounts of grammaticalization are illustrated by means of Dutch.

Dear friend Bureš: Bohuslav Martinů´s Letters to Miloslav Bureš

Milý příteli Bureši: Dopisy Bohuslava Martinů Miloslavu Burešovi / Dear friend Bureš: Bohuslav Martinů´s Letters to Miloslav Bureš

Author(s): Vít Zouhar,Gabriela Coufalová / Language(s): English,Czech

Keywords: composers; Czech poets; musical life; music and literature

The monograph documents the preserved correspondence between the composer Bohuslav Martinů and the poet Miloslav Bureš. It represents a unique testimony to their having working together on four cantatas: Opening of the Springs, The Legend of the Smoke from Potato Tops, A Dandelion Romance and Mikesh from the Mountains. Furthermore, it serves to document the sheer difficulties of communication between East and West in the second half of the 1950s. This period picture is supplemented and extended by the correspondence Martinů and Bureš conducted with other addressees, which duly reveals other meanings and nuances of that which the two artists communicated to each other.

Restraint´s Rewards: Limited Sovereignties, Ancient Values, and the Preamble for a European Constitution

Author(s): Peter McCormick / Language(s): English

Keywords: civilization; values; cultural traditions; political philosophy; constitution

Any EU constitution tomorrow will need to embody basic European ethical values. Yet the identity of such values and their sources remain strongly controversial. Peter McCormick retrieves from cultural origins of some major European values a basic ethical value of a measured and critically reasoned restraint in all things. At the same time he argues that this originary ethical value entails a renewed understanding of political, social, and individual sovereignties no longer as almost absolute but as necessarily limited. The rewards for polities of fully assuming such a basic ethical value turn out to include the ineluctable necessity for the rule of law, the constitutionalisation of social pluralisms, and the entrenchment of personal dignity.

Keywords: Church; charitable service; Catholic social teaching; theology; charitable practice

The focus of this publication is the Church's charitable ministry in relation to Catholic social teaching. Multiculturalism - a lost paradigm?

Multikulturalismus – ztracené paradigma?

Author(s): Andrea Preissová Krejčí / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: multiculturalism; postmodernism; cultural diversity; multicultural education; multiculturalism

Although multiculturalism as a concept within the humanities is a somewhat exhausted topic, we want to define the space that remains unfilled within the multicultural approach in Czech society. Our aim is to draw attention to the possibilities of rethinking multicultural ideology on the basis of a critical approach to it and to the possibilities of its application in the spheres of education and training. We want to show how an overemphasis on ethnic differentiation devalues the goals of multiculturalism based on fair access even across other types of differences. Unless we set out ways of talking about the ideas of multiculturalism without narrowing the issue to ethnicity, we have no hope of adopting multicultural education as a necessary part of the school curriculum, as a platform for a new social paradigm.

Changes in Czech and Polish border schools providing compulsory education after 1989

Proměny české a polské pohraniční školy poskytující povinné vzdělávání po roce 1989

Author(s): Jana Poláchová Vašťatková,Pawel Rudnicki / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: education; regional education; regional schools; compulsory education; educational policy; national curriculum; teacher career; comparative research

The book was written as an output of a project carried out in 2013-2014 at Palacký University in Olomouc in cooperation with a Polish partner, which was Dolnośląska Szkoła Wyższa in Wrocław. The aim of the project was to analyse the transformations of the Czech and Polish education systems providing compulsory education after 1989, focusing on specific regions (Olomouc and Moravian-Silesian regions and the Lower Silesian Voivodeship). The functions of schools were examined, with an emphasis on qualification, socialisation and integration, individualisation, cultural and ecological functions. The mixed research design, conceived comparatively, relied on data collection using different methods: document analysis, questionnaire and multiple case study. A specific feature of the project was the role of the researchers as cultural strangers: Czechs in Poland and Poles in the Czech Republic.
