On 13-15 September 2022, the History of Archaeology in the Czech Lands and Slovakia conference was held at the Department of History, Faculty of Arts, Palacký University in Olomouc (with the organizational contribution of the Moravian Museum in Brno). Nominally it was dedicated to two anniversaries connected with Moravian archaeology - 70 years since the death of Innocence Ladislav Červinka (1 February 1869 - 3 October 1952), the most important Moravian prehistorian of the first half of the 20th century, and 115 years since the first congress of the Moravian Archaeological Club in Litovel, an association that since the end of 1906 has brought together most Moravian prehistorians of Czech nationality under Červinka's presidency. It was attended by 40 interested persons from the Czech lands, Slovakia and Poland. The proceedings contain two dozen texts: 16 of the 25 papers that were presented at the conference, 3 additional papers that were announced in preliminary versions of the conference programme but ultimately did not appear due to various circumstances, and an edition of one of Červinka's manuscripts. The texts are structured into five thematic parts. The first one (Innocent Ladislav Červinka) with seven papers is devoted to the personality of Innocent Ladislav Červinka. The second part (Personalities) presents eight articles on European and regional personalities associated with archaeology. Two contributions of the third part (Societies) deal with the organizational structures of Czech and Moravian archaeology. The other two articles in Part Four (Finds and Sites) deal with the history of one remarkable find from Slovakia and one important Slovakian site.

Master Meng

Mencius

Author(s): Ivo Pajorek / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: Chinese philosophy; historical political science; Confucianism; Confucianism

The first complete Czech translation of one of the most important texts exploring the philosophy of Confucianism. The book Mencius, together with Confucius' Analects, the Great Learning and the Doctrine of the Mean, constitute the Four Books, for many centuries a syllabus for Chinese civil service examinations. The book contains dialogues by the Master Meng or Mencius (372-289 BC) with various persons, including his disciples and rulers of the Warring States period. As a “wandering scholar”, Mencius tried to persuade them to choose the Way of ancient sage-kings in accordance with Confucian principles of humanity and righteousness. Mencius deals with various topics, including just government, proper governance, and human nature, but also comments on a few non-Confucian teachings, which he tries to eradicate with forceful arguments. The translation from Classical Chinese is accompanied by a brief introduction, bibliography and notes, which make it easier for readers who are not Sinologists to find their way into the text.

Old Masters in New Colours

Author(s): / Language(s): English

Keywords: technical art history; painting; Olomouc Museum of Art; Archbishopric of Olomouc

The study of the artworks of the Old Masters has long been the prerogative of art historians alone. Expertise and other art-historical methods can now make much greater use than ever before of the findings of the so-called exact sciences. These make it possible to acquire new knowledge about works of art of the past that is not obvious to our eyes. Imaging and instrumental methods for the study of works of art often allow us to literally “look into the painting”, below the surface of what we see, and observe the work in different areas of the invisible spectrum of electromagnetic radiation, for example. By using various research methods – with the necessary caution and awareness of their limitations – it is often possible to gain insight into the hypothetical process of the creation of the work and into the painting’s layers. It is possible to characterize the material nature or technological processes or to study the author’s changes and later interventions in the work. Various research methods allow us to see artworks from different perspectives and to study them figuratively speaking “in new colours”, often the colours in which they appear to our eyes using a variety of imaging methods. How an art historian can work with technological knowledge and to what extent he can rely on it at all is demonstrated and addressed in a total of seven case studies dealing with hanging paintings by Old Masters from the collections of the Archbishopric of Olomouc and the Olomouc Museum of Art.

The image of the neighbour: a discursive analysis of Czech and Polish literary and educational texts

Obraz souseda: diskurzivní analýza českých a polských literárněvzdělávacích textů

Author(s): Michaela Nakládalová / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: textbook; culture; literature; Czech Republic; Poland; school; teaching; comparison

The theme of the image of the neighbour is understood in the present work as the image of Poland and Polish culture in Czech textbooks serving literary education from the beginning of schooling to the final school leaving exam and the image of the Czech Republic in Polish textbooks. Over 300 textbooks were analysed for the purposes of the thesis. The image of the neighbour can be divided into primary and secondary. The primery one concentrate on the headings Czech, Czech Republic and the Czech authors. The image of the Czech Republic and Czech culture in Polish textbooks is represented in particular by the work Švejk, then Václav Havel and his work The Power of the Powerless, Milan Kundera and Bohumil Hrabal - especially Ostře sledované vlaky. The only other artist of Czech nationality who is mentioned on a regular basis is Alfons Mucha, but often without information that he is Czech. The image of Poland and Polish culture in Czech literature textbooks is presented by Tuwim's and Brzechwa's verses at the first level, but usually without further information about the author. In later grades, pupils are introduced to Henryk Siekiewicz and Adam Mickiewicz, and the most prominent representation of Polish authors is in textbooks for secondary schools, although these are often very brief mentions. The secondary image is focused on the context and common historical experiences. There is not much room in textbooks for looking back at how a neighbouring country experienced a given phase, the biggest being on the subject of communism.

Media education in the context of infodemia and new media

Mediální výchova v kontextu infodemie a nových médií

Author(s): Klára Gyüre / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: media education; media literacy; digital media; social networks; educational research; elementary schools;

This monograph deals with the topic of media literacy and media education. The main aim of the theoretical part is to present arguments in favour of continuous development of media literacy within education and to define ways of strengthening it in educational practice. In this sense, the topicality of media education is emphasized primarily in terms of its content fulfillment, which should respond to the current needs of pupils or teachers that result from the social context. On the empirical level, the main objective was to find out to what extent pupils of the upper primary school are knowledgeable about selected current issues of media education and media literacy and what is their behavior on the Internet and social networks in the context of selected current issues. Based on the expertise presented in the theoretical part of the monograph and the results of the research presented in the empirical part, possible strategies leading to the development of media literacy and the improvement of the teaching of media education in Czech primary schools were developed. Among other things, the monograph provided evidence for the necessity of emphasizing the need to prevent risky virtual communication not only for girls but also boys, to educate pupils about the issue of influencers' influence on their behavior, to discuss with pupils the limits of freedom of expression on the Internet, to redefine and update the concept of the expected outcomes of the cross-curricular theme of Media Education, and more. This monograph deals with the topic of media literacy and media education. The Media and Speed

Média a rychlost

Author(s): Stanislav Hubík / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: medium; mediation; communication; dromocracy; dromoscopy; telecracy; Paul Virilio

The dromoscopic order of visibility and the associated dromospheric perception arose from a relatively rapid reversal of the places and functions of geometric optics and wave optics: direct vision (through the eye) gave way to indirect vision (through television), the object of vision (the house) gave way to its sign representation (photography), geometrization (maps) was overlaid by combinatorial mathematization (software). As a result, the new dromoscopy triumphed over the old scopia: in situ optics succumbed to wave optics and heralded the advent of the dromoscopic revolution. The indirect inner light of screens is our second sun – but it also marks the end of the outer world of immediate revelation. The experience of reality has been replaced by the report of reality, sunlit reality has been replaced by the imitation of reality on screens...

Dear Frank: I. Bohuslav Martinů's Letters to Frank Rybka from 1941 to 1954

Milý Franku: I. Dopisy Bohuslava Martinů Franku Rybkovi z let 1941 až 1954 / Dear Frank: I. Bohuslav Martinů's Letters to Frank Rybka from 1941 to 1954

Author(s): Jana Honzíková,Vít Zouhar / Language(s): English,Czech

Keywords: Bohuslav Martinů; music history; 20th century

The correspondence between Bohuslav Martinů and Frank Rybka often surprises with the directness, frankness and lightness of the composer as he asks for advice and help or describes everyday events. Frank Rybka was the composer's childhood friend and from the 1940s onwards was among his closest confidants. As a result, the writing is casual and relaxed. It reminds us of conversations between age-old comrades, where no topics, questions or requests are off the table. It is direct, playful, but also hedonistic. Additionally, however, it contains the composer's final will and testament from the dramatic year of 1948. After their arrival in March 1941, Frank Rybka helped the Martinů family build a new life in the United States. He organised their living quarters, transport, books, new contacts, helped negotiate royalties, find musicians, as well as provide Bohuslav Martinů with alibis for his holiday jaunts. This supportive role is also emphasized in the solitary letter from Martinů's girlfriend Rosalie Barstow. This first volume of correspondence with Frank Rybka highlights the origin and performance of a number of Bohuslav Martinů's compositions. It documents the complicated search for a soloist for his Cello Concerto No. 2, for the title of the composition Thunderbolt P-47, the work on the opera Mirandolina or Martinů's musings about Dostoyevsky's novel The Possessed. An ostensibly breezy exterior disguises the cavalcade of dramatic events that occurred to the composer and his wife Charlotte during the years 1941-1954.

Pedagogical and psychological aspects of expressive therapies for individuals with special educational needs

Pedagogicko-psychologické aspekty expresivních terapií u jedinců se speciálními vzdělávacími potřebami

Author(s): Petra Potměŝilová / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: expressive therapy ; special education; case studies

The collective monograph brings a special pedagogical view of selected expressive therapies. The introductory chapter is a theoretical description of expressive therapies and their current state in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. It is followed by practical chapters in which individual expressive therapies are discussed. The firs is the oldest therapy that works with visual arts (art therapy), then terapies that are based on natural children’s activities - games (method of working in a clay field, game therapy) and therapies that work with a written story (Bibliodrama and creative writing). Each chapter first presents the theoretical basis of individual therapies, then examples from practice and case studies. The chapters are then supplemented with specific research activities.

Message of Isaiah 1—27 Then and Now

Author(s): Bohdan Hroboň / Language(s): English

Keywords: religion; Christianity; Isaiah; Book of Isaiah; Biblical Interpretation; Post-Communist Societies; Theological Application; Scholarship and Complexity; Scriptural Study;

The purpose of the book is threefold. First, it summarizes the results of scholar discussion on the first 27 chapters of the book of Isaiah in a way that understandable to a non-professional, general reader. It attempts to capture the main message of each unit of this text in a nutshell, while preserving the complexity of the text and integrity of modern scholarship. The second goal is to draw parallels between Isaiah 1—27 and the societies and issues of post-communist countries, so the original message and lessons can be relearned and applied to them. Third, the brevity and the actualization are to stimulate the interest of the reader in a more in-depth study of this very influential part of the Scripture.

Where to next? School leaving and transition planning for pupils with special educational needs

Kam dál? Ukončování školní docházky a plánování přechodu u žáků se speciálními vzdělávacími potřebami

Author(s): Jaromír Maštalíř / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: children with disabilities; special educational needs; counselling; social services; socio-pedagogical research

The publication focuses on a specific topic, primarily oriented towards pupils with intellectual or combined disabilities in the period of leaving compulsory education. With reference to the theoretical background and framework developed, this topic can be described as understudied, especially in our context. The aim is to implement, describe and subsequently evaluate the process of support during the end of compulsory education and transition planning for selected pupils with intellectual disabilities from school to the next stage of their lives, to summarize the findings of persons facilitating this process and subsequently propose recommendations for possible implementation of the transition planning process in special education practice. Furthermore, the author tried to identify, describe and analyse the current state of the issue from the perspective of class teachers working with these pupils and social workers of selected social service institutions in selected regions of the Czech Republic.

New Objective Behavioural Doctrines in Prague German Literature

Neusachliche Verhaltenslehren in der Prager deutschen Literatur

Author(s): Adéla Grimes / Language(s): German

Keywords: Prague German fiction; Neue Sachlichkeit (literature); literary criticism and history; interpretation and reception of literature

This publication deals with the new-objective way of writing and new-objective cool conduct and its occurrence in Prague-German literature. Three representative novels, Otto Roeld’s Malenski auf der Tour, Hans Natonek’s Kinder einer Stadt, and Paul Kornfeld’s Blanche oder Das Atelier im Garten, were chosen to demonstrate the appearance of New Objectivity within the ‘circle’ of Prague-German authors. New-objective features analysed in these works prove the hitherto prevalent marginalization of New Objectivity within German-written literature in Prague to be unjustified. The biography of the authors included in this publication points out their most important stages in life, as well as their participation in the cultural space of Bohemia and the Weimar Republic.

Leonard Cohen, the Modern Troubadour

Author(s): Jiří Měsíc / Language(s): English

Keywords: Canadian poets (English); Canadian poetry (English); themes and motives; art and religion; Occitan poetry; medieval poetry; interpretation and reception of literature

This monograph arose from thinking about the literary tradition as described by the Anglo-American modernist writers Ezra Pound and T. S. Eliot. In their view, the tradition of European love-lyrics crystallized in the work of the medieval Occitan troubadours, who represented the cultural and political milieu of the Occitanie of that period and whose work reflected the religious influences of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Nowadays, it is not surprising that contemporary artists draw on the troubadour poets and that they are even contrasted with them by critics. Such is the case of Leonard Cohen, who, during his career, revealed erudition in medieval poetry and religion and whose work shows many parallels with the work of his Occitan predecessors.

Náročné, krizové a mimořádné situace v kontextu rezidenčních služeb. Umírání, doprovázení a smrt uživatelů se zdravotním postižením

Author(s): Jan Chrastina,Naděžda Špatenková,Bianka Hudcová / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: older people; people with disabilities; dying; death; social service; helping professions; models of competencies; crisis situations

The publication has been produced primarily to ""open up selected topics"" related to the management of challenging, crisis and emergency situations by residential service workers, as they should be competent to respond and act effectively. In these situations, workers may face a sense of their own unpreparedness, which may stem not only from their personality, but also from their previous experience, knowledge and practical skills. Through the results and findings, the publication offers insights into what workers in residential service settings consider to be a challenging, crisis and/or emergency situation and event. The authors of the publication highlight (in the context of staff preparedness) situations related to dying and death of one or more residential service users.

The linguistic concept of operativity

Le concept linguistique d’opérativité

Author(s): Samuel Henri Bidaud / Language(s): French

Keywords: theory of language; psycholinguistics; generative grammar; structural syntax; Czech language; nouns; verbs; French fiction; literary texts; linguistic analysis; textual criticism

The concept of operativity is fundamental for modern and contemporary linguistics. However, its genealogy, its main principles, and its possible applications to other fields have not been explored until now. This book shows at first to which extent the notion of operativity is central to three main linguistic theories of the 20th century: the Psychomechanics of Language of Gustave Guillaume, the Structural Syntax of Lucien Tesniere, and the Transformational Generative Grammar of Noam Chomsky. The second part of the book is dedicated to the Czech language and studies, within the frame of operative linguistics, two parts of speech, the noun and the verb. The last part applies the concept of operativity to literature by analyzing In Search of Lost Time.

In Our Own Image: Fictional Representations of William Shakespeare

In Our Own Image: Fictional Representations of William Shakespeare

Author(s): David Livingstone / Language(s): English

Keywords: English authors; English literature; artistic themes; art

This publication looks at fictional portrayals of William Shakespeare with a focus on novels, short stories, plays, occasional poems, films, television series and even comics. In terms of time span, the analysis covers the entire twentieth century and ends in the present-day. The authors included range from well-known figures (G.B. Shaw, Kipling, Joyce) to more obscure writers. The depictions of Shakespeare are varied to say the least, with even interpretations giving credence to the Oxfordian theory and feminist readings involving a Shakespearian sister of sorts. The main argument is that readings of Shakespeare almost always inform us more about the particular author writing the specific work than about the historical personage.

First of all, the so-called Abele Spelen, the first worldly theatre pieces written in Dutch. The second focus is on the play Elckerlijc, the best-known rhetoric Dutch play from the late fifteenth century and the third on the late-medieval miracle play Mariken van Nieumeghen. These chapters are combined with studies on the history of Dutch medieval literature (the theme of the death dance, Neolatin Dutch theater, indecent speech in farces etc.).
