Author(s): Jaromír Synek,Gabriela Všetičková / Language(s): English,Czech

Keywords: Bohuslav Martinů; music history; 20th century

Bohuslav Martinů's extensive correspondence to his family in Polička is an extraordinarily valuable set of historic documents that testifi both to the composer's professional career and to his entirely private life. This fourth volume of the series compries 53 items of his family correspondence. This includes all the extant letters and one postal card that the composer and his wife sent home to Martinů's mother and siblings in Polička in the years 1936 and 1937. It allows the reader to follow a significant period in the lif of this exceptional artistic personality through his authentic personal testimony, supplemented with detailed annotations. The individual letters contain valuable information of his dealings with publishers and politicians, of his correspondence and conversations with colleagues and friends, and of course, of his compositions and the peaks and pitfalls of his efforts to have them performer on stages both at home and abroad. However, more than anywhere else, Bohuslav Martinů appears here as a man "of flesh and blood", with ordinary troubles and joys. His personal correspondence with those closest to him thus helps complete the overall picture of the life and work of the composer and is a metaphorical "umblicial cord" - a unique bridge connecting life abroad with that at home.

Atlas of Czech dialects - nominative singular feminine

Atlas nářečí českého jazyka – nominativ singuláru feminin

Author(s): Martina Ireinová,Vít Voženílek,Jakub Koníček / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: Dialectology; Czech; dialects; language atlases; geographical linguistics

The Atlas of Czech Dialects - Nominative Singular Feminine is the result of an interdisciplinary collaboration between experts from the Dialectology Department of the Institute of Czech Language of the Czech Academy of Sciences and experts from the Department of Geoinformatics of the Faculty of Science of Palacký University in Olomouc. The Atlas presents not only the dialectal phenomena that are declining and disappearing, but also the phenomena that are still alive. The main analytical dialect maps show the morphological differences in the territory of the Czech national language. The accompanying maps of spelling variations illustrate the overall territorial picture of the word form under study. In addition to the dialect maps and brief expert dialectological comments, the atlas contains texts describing the realities of former rural life, farming methods and customs, infographics, links to audiorecords and illustrative images created by artificial intelligence tools. The expert explanations are complemented by rich dialectal material, while the popular format of the texts ensures accessibility to a wide range of people interested in our dialect. Data from the Questionnaire for Research on Czech Dialects, processed into thematic maps, are brought to life by photographs taken by dialectologists half a century ago during field research.

Evaluation of variable mechanisms of voice, language and speech in the context of speech therapy and neurodevelopmental research

Hodnocení variabilních mechanismů hlasu, jazyka a řeči v kontextu logopedického a neurovývojového bádání

Author(s): Kateřina Vitásková,Jana Mironova Tabachová,Lucie Nohová / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: voice disorders; speech disorders; communicative disorders; speech therapy; psycholinguistics; neurolinguistics; developmental neuropsychology; diagnostic methods

"The collective monograph is focused on the investigation of selected physiological and pathological mechanisms of voice, language and speech in the context of logopedic (speech language therapy), special edcuational and neurodevelopmental, psycholinguistic and neurolinguistic research. These are twelve selected areas of specifics and deviations of communication, including respiration, phonation and resonance, articulation, intelligibility and understanding of speech, phatic functions, lexia and pragmatics of communication, both in the context of their development and acquired and so-called symptomatic (secondary) speech disorders. Individual sub-areas were examined with a primary emphasis on speech therapy and special pedagogical diagnostics and therapy using a mixed methodological research design, using special instrumental, test, registration and specific therapeutic methods, some of which will be adapted or newly created during the project. The publication has a transdisciplinary intersectoral character – it covers both the educational and clinical and counselling environment, uses newly adapted experimental and diagnostic methods and therapeutic materials and extends the current state of knowledge in the field of determinants of development and communication disorders in its individually and situationally variable form. The presented research responds to the long-term pandemic situation, and thus to changes in the assessment of changes and deviations in communication in the context of prevention and impacts of COVID-19, including innovated research methods and its enrichment with a combination of face-to-face field and distance electronic formats."

Author(s): Darina Hradilová,Michaela Kopečková,Jindřiška Svobodová / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: Czech as a foreign language; Czech as a second language; didactics; communication competence; communication skills

The authors aim to offer a comprehensive and practical guide to approaching to Czech as a foreign/second language. Second, they outline the rationale for teaching as it is anchored in curriculum documents and show its relevance to the lesson plans and implementation of teaching. Third, they reflect on practical aspects of language teaching, such as the choice of mediating language, the use of linguistic terminology and the selection of an appropriate method. Above all they describe specifically how to develop the different components of communicative competence, e.g., to practise correct pronunciation, to develop vocabulary, how and in what order to explain specific linguistic phenomena or work with sociolinguistic and pragmatic competence. Last but not least, the authors present their own findings on the development of speech skills, i.e., they define the goals to be met as well as conditions and methods for their achievement. The book also includes a pack of teaching activities that are related to the Czech it UP textbook series. The authors show how the selected teaching methods can be applied to build communicative competence and develop speaking skills.

No roof over your head. An Empirical Study of Homelessness in Olomouc

Bez střechy nad hlavou. Empirická studie bezdomovectví v Olomouci

Author(s): Tomáš Lebeda,Helena Kubátová,Pavel Šaradín / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: homeless; homelessness; public; opinions and attitudes; everyday life; socially vulnerable groups; sociological research; field research; cities

The book examines the phenomenon of homelessness in Olomouc from several perspectives. The first is the view of the majority Olomouc society on homelessness and its homeless community. It is based on the analysis of data from previously conducted sociological surveys. The second is the view of the academic community of Palacký University on homelessness in Olomouc, which is based on a representative survey within the university. The third and main one is the view from within the homeless community itself. Based on qualitative interviews, the book presents the inner workings of the Olomouc homeless community, seeking to understand its internal social relations and attitudes towards the majority. The aim of the book is to present and understand how the majority thinks about the homeless, how the homeless community actually functions and how it perceives its surroundings. Without such a deeper understanding, a solution to the homeless problem in the city of Olomouc is hardly possible.

Czechs will never get lost in the world, even less in America. Medallions from the lives of Czech emigrants

Češi se ve světě neztratí, natož v Americe. Medailonky ze života českých vystěhovalců

Author(s): Miloslav Rechcígl / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: Czechs; celebrities; emigrants; culture and society; immigration; personalities; culture; United States;

In the book, the author presents a panorama of the fates of selected personalities whose roots are in the Czech lands and who achieved extraordinary success in the United States and whose activities significantly influenced the development and growth of the new homeland. It is a saga of ordinary and powerful people whose influence and importance often extended beyond the borders of the United States. However, a large number of the persons mentioned will certainly be completely unknown to the Czech readership, as their Czech origins were generally unknown. The book covers the entire period from the discovery of the New World to the beginning of the 21st century. The individual personalities were chosen solely according to the taste and interest of the author, and the selection was based on their importance, contribution and the interest of their lives, the only condition being that they were either born on Czech territory or were descendants of emigrants from Czech lands.
