Summary/Abstract: At the beginning of the 21st century the geopolitical role of petroleum is not as unambiguous. It is reflected in the mechanisms of global political control of the US, in other words in the rules of international relations that are directed by those whose economic foundations were built with petroleum and gas profits. At the beginning of the 21st century, energy and global geographical distribution of energy, its sources, flows, production and use have gained importance as main determinants of global politics and aspirations for political power in the globalized world. In the first decade of the 21st century it primarily refers to petroleum and gas, which consittute about 2/3 of the energy consumed by modern civilization, i.e. which are used as modern economic values in the contemporary economy. Beside petroleum, at the beginning of the 21st century the role of fresh water arises as a crucial issue. Many authors have already predicted that fresh water will be the main reason for future conflicts and wars. Control over fresh water will become the bottom line for contemporary policy and strategy. The Round Table on Geopolitical Aspects of Petroleum and Water has shown that Croatia has remarkable fresh water reserves and that this should be a key element for future development strategies and general country policies.

The possibility of creating a "new geopolitics" within the framework of globalism and globalization is considered. In this context, they want to show changes in the relationship between space and politics, of course, as part of the theory of globalization of politics and the transformation of the nation-state. Then there is a discussion about geopolitical actors, ideologies and conflicts on a global level, with a special focus on energy sources, namely oil and water.

- Keywords:energy; oil; world market; supply - demand; geopolitics;
- Summary/Abstract:The paper analyzes the geopolitical situation on the world oil market at the beginning of the 21st century. After the terrorist attack on the USA on September 11, 2001, there was an increase in the influence of geopolitical factors on market conditions and a jump in oil prices after 2003. Thus, the world oil market entered a new stage of possible energy crises, political instability and major disruptions. This situation complicates the energy situation of energy importers, especially relatively small countries outside major geopolitical integrations, but also once again actualizes the need for energy saving, improving energy efficiency and more intensive use of renewable energy sources. Geopolitical developments and contradictions arising from the uneven distribution of world oil production and consumption, as well as the impact of these global events on energy, greatly affect the situation in the oil and gas sector of smaller countries such as Croatia.

(Reliability of Oil and Gas Supply in contemporary Geostrategic and Energy Changes)
- Author(s):Stevo Kolundžić
- Language:Croatian
- Subject(s):Supranational / Global Economy, Energy and Environmental Studies, Geopolitics
- Page Range:53-75
- No. of Pages:23
- Keywords:security of supply; geostrategy; changes in energy;
- Summary/Abstract:The reliability of energy supply is essentially a question of the supply of hydrocarbons, i.e. oil and gas. // Although the availability of low-risk (in the geological sense) exploration concessions for oil and gas for small and medium-sized companies became questionable as early as the 1990s, and although this is also an element of security of supply, it is not discussed outside professional circles. The military campaign in Iraq, the storm in the Gulf of Mexico and the disagreement between Russia and Ukraine over gas prices, each of which resulted in a reduction in production and/or supply of oil or gas, have gradually exacerbated the issue of security of supply, so that Security of Supply has become a global issue that has been discussed in the centers of power for the past eight months. // The views on security of supply in the European Union, the USA, Russia, India and China are not the same. Smaller countries have reason to design their security of supply strategy with particular attention, and energy projects are the ones that must respond to the threat.

- Summary/Abstract:The acceptance of useful world achievements for the rational management of our natural resources was built into the foundations of the birth of the modern Croatian state, back in the 19th century. Let this, and all subsequent experiences, be an incentive for us to clearly demonstrate our sovereignty in the area of natural resource management. The problem is not only in the current limitations of standardized collection, organization and processing of information about our natural resources, which is the topic of this presentation, but is additionally increased by the fact that institutions that have systematically dealt with resources, and thus with the private and public use of this information, are one by one becoming private and even foreign property, which means the loss of the legal basis for the state's management of this public good. So far, part of the information has been irreversibly destroyed in these processes, and for a significant part, the future and public availability is uncertain.

- Summary/Abstract:The amount of water on Earth is constant. The oceans and seas make up the majority of water. Freshwater is distributed across the continents as permafrost and snow, as surface water in lakes, rivers and swamps, and as groundwater. Some water is constantly in the atmosphere. In nature, water is constantly changing from one form to another. Through this movement, which is called the hydrological cycle, water on the continents is constantly renewed. Thus, unlike, for example, oil, coal and other mineral raw materials, which are practically non-renewable resources, water has significant annual renewable reserves. In addition, water in nature has the ability to self-purify. These two characteristics of water have ensured a sufficient quantity and satisfactory quality of natural waters throughout history. This was the basis for creating the illusion of the immutability and inexhaustibility of water supplies, which were considered a free gift of nature. In practice, this was the case because any negative impacts of humans on water for centuries were small and local.
