Summary/Abstract: The paper analyzes the geopolitical situation on the world oil market at the beginning of the 21st century. After the terrorist attack on the USA on September 11, 2001, there was an increase in the influence of geopolitical factors on market conditions and a jump in oil prices after 2003. Thus, the world oil market entered a new stage of possible energy crises, political instability and major disruptions. This situation complicates the energy situation of energy importers, especially relatively small countries outside major geopolitical integrations, but also once again actualizes the need for energy saving, improving energy efficiency and more intensive use of renewable energy sources. Geopolitical developments and contradictions arising from the uneven distribution of world oil production and consumption, as well as the impact of these global events on energy, greatly affect the situation in the oil and gas sector of smaller countries such as Croatia.
