This book presents a collection of essays about food that I have published beginning in the 1990s. The first essays, which were published in the “Time for enjoyment” section of the magazine Vreme (Time), with the exception of an essay about French cheeses, which I revised according to a different conception about twenty years later. Also not in this collection is the text of an introduction to Apicius’s recipe book which I published in Latin in 1989 and translated for the collection of classic texts published in the Zagreb journal Latina&Graeca, because that was writing for a specific purpose. The collection also does not include my research on cabbage and sexuality, which appeared at the end of last year in Slovenian. I particularly regret that my book of recipes Poverty Cuisine, which I delevered for publication just before the war to the publisher “Književna zajednica Novi Sad,” was never released. Technical and other conditions were such that the manuscript has simply – at least for me – disappeared. On the other hand, this collection includes many essays that have never been published before, but which are inspired by the basic theme and my approach to it.

Author(s): Srđan Radović / Language(s): Serbian

The time has long passed since we could say about anthropologists that they are “well known to be agoraphobic and antiurban by definition,” considering that a broad set of circumstances have brought researchers closer to the “other” and “exotic” in their own surroundings, frequently in urban surroundings. The city and urban culture have by now become traditional terrains of anthropology and ethnology, as well as an object of research in other disciplines. The city has become over time a site of general interest, a theme of both academic and public discussion, and questions related to the urban are considered and analysed from the most diverse perspectives. This interest in the problematics of the city is entirely predictable if one takes into account what appears to be the irreversible course of advancing urbanisation and the ever-increasing success and visibility of urban environments. In this light it is understandable that one might say, “if it is true that we are part of a civilisation that is irredeemable urban … then it is natutal that there should appear a growth in interest for something that we might call destiny .” Or, as a well-known Yugoslav architect observed, “the fact that since time immemorial, the idea of the city has been surrounded by a rich halo of picturesque images, tells us that humans have always been obsessed with the search for the meaning of the city; that could also be taken to mean that humans early on sensed its central importance.”

Trudne umieranie

Author(s): Piotr Szenajch / Language(s): Polish

“The work consists of three parts, corresponding to consecutive phases of my study. The first part constitutes a multi-layered description of 20th-century narrative representations of disease and death. The second part is an analysis of a few currents in the public discourse of death that I find to be of essence, it also contains some interpretational efforts important for the entirety of the project. The third part is an account of conversations I had with patients of the Caritas Stationary Hospice of the Archdiocese of Warsaw in 2007. Each of the parts took on a separate character. They differ in the methodology of analysis, strategies of interpretation, and even, to some extent, in narrative style. Each part is also in some way a separate attempt to say something about dying in the contemporary world” (from the introduction). “The overflow of representations of death as a soothing culmination, of initiatives freeing us from the taboo of death, and of scholarly deliberations about death as a master key to the human condition – all this is dramatically at odds with the experience of dying as told by my interlocutors. All these cultural approaches to death did nothing to prepare them for the disorganisation of life, the physical and psychological suffering, the threat to the order of lives of others, and the deficiency of meaning that are associated with dying. An aestheticized and meaningful death is something one can talk about. The experience of dying is unalterably surrounded by a wall of silence and isolating practices” (from the introduction). “Piotr Szenajch’s work defies the commonplace thesis – a thesis derived from a superficial reading of Hans-Georg Gadamer – that the “truth” sought by the humanities is mutually exclusive with “method”. On the contrary, there is, as the author demonstrates, a certain method, a rigorous technology of the intellect, which following Barbara Fatyga and Przemysław Zieliński he calls the removal of metaphors. This method allows for bringing to order even as resistant a material as dying, to see in it seams and bastings, to look beneath the lining of silence. However, as Szenajch finds, nothing, no method in the world, can tell us how to understand the result we arrive at, how to face what we have wilfully stripped of metaphors. The author leads us to this conclusion through a winding road but it is a journey the reader will not have regretted” (Joanna Tokarska-Bakir).

Book Power in Communication, Sociology and Technology

Author(s): / Language(s): English

A book may be seen as a symbol, a product, or even a miracle. It used to represent (and still represents) the most important element of the spiritual connection between generations, between different professions, between education and multicultural systems. The book is the oldest economic model developed by libraries, an investment in a product which gives benefit to as many people as possible. In 2012, The Library of Congress (Washington, D.C., U.S.A.) had the initiative of organizing an annual meeting which would disseminate the vision of library leaders on the importance of the book. The meeting would gather all the categories involved in the book industry: writers, publishers, editors, professors, librarians. The goal was to create a platform for discussions on how to promote the book as a crucial element for culture and education enhancement. The power of information and its dissemination was discussed within the first edition, while keeping the book as a central element in all debates. After this first edition, the Summit of the book was organized yearly in different locations throughout the world: Singapore (2013), France (2014), Egypt (2015) and Ireland (2016). The event had a powerful international impact and in 2017 the 6th summit was hosted in Brasov (Romania) at the “Transilvania” University. This volume is the collection of the most valuable contributions to the 6th Summit of the Book where experts presented their best practices and expertise in the history and technology of the book, knowledge support, and book dissemination.

Czuła pedagogia. Edukacyjny walor dzieł i działań księżnej Izabeli z Flemmingów Czartoryskiej

Author(s): Jolanta Skutnik / Language(s): Polish

In the present study, which aims at the interpretation of works and activities of Princess Izabela Czartoryska née Flemming (1746–1835) from pedagogical perspective, various analytical tropes converge that encompass the scope of her political, social, aid and educational activities, but also her social, artistic, and even ecological work. Following these tropes, it was not difficult to recognize in princess’s activities early forms of animation in its social and cultural dimension; proposals of educating in museum and through museum that anticipate American ideas of the interpretation of heritage; and even precursory forms of social and educational work. In an obvious way, these activities of the princess did not originate in social or cultural vacuum. On the contrary, they were inspired by ideas and actions of people who accompanied her at different stages of her life, supported philosophical trends and intellectual movements at the turn of the Enlightenment and Romanticism, enriched the works and conceptions that constituted the foundation of her self-educational practice. The effects of her works were validated by the positions of her pupils and significant achievements of the members of the society that were gathered around Czartoryska. A specific symptom of these actions were the works promoting humanism that took the form typical of Puławy district referred to as “fellow feeling”. The scope of influences and inspirations instigating the analyses undertaken in the present work is very broad, covering non-obvious but intentional reference to contemporary ideas of social participation, cultural mediation, and interpretation of heritage, which combined historical experience with present-day discourse devoted to cultural education. The extent of these references and the amount of analysed facts that shed light on the activities of Princess Czartoryska may at times seem to overweigh the main trope of the analyses. It is, however, structured by the explicit orientation of the research. All of the research goals, regardless of how detached they may be from the main topic, invariably focus on the person whose meaning of life consisted in the activities undertaken out of love to mankind. And this is the conclusion which is still valid today.

Efektywność terapii dyslalii. Logopedyczno-lingwistyczna analiza wyników badań

Author(s): Danuta Pluta-Wojciechowska / Language(s): Polish

In terms of methodology, this monograph is based on the thesis claiming that speech therapy is a study of biological determinants of language and linguistic behaviours, which underpins contemporary speech-therapy research. This very publication provides the results of empirical research relating to diagnosis and therapy of speech disorders stemming from malfunction of peripheral factors – malformations of speech organs and/or impaired biological functions. The main subject of analyses is the efficiency of speech-therapy treatment provided to persons with impaired phoneme production – children, adolescents, and adults. As a source of those nonnormative sounds discussed herein I pinpoint biological factors, such as ankyloglossia, malocclusions, breathing difficulties and swallowing impairments, difficulties in biting and chewing, parafunctions, such as thumb or finger sucking. The efficiency of a particular speech therapy is assessed by utilizing the elaborated paradigm, also employing statistical tests, which meets the assumption of Evidence Based Practice. Therefore, research like these are unprecedented either in Polish or world speech-therapy studies. For the assessment of therapies, I developed the Strategic Method of Improving Phonemes Implementation (hereinafter referred to as SMIPI, Polish Strategiczna metoda usprawniania realizacji fonemów,) of my own authorship. Some threads of my study occasionally refer to previously elaborated methods of treating speech impediments, yet I challenge or discard quite a few of them as methodologically invalid, for instance, exercising the tongue outside the oral cavity, tensioning the tip of the tongue. The monograph opens with a chapter placing speech therapy – metaphorically – between linguistics and medicine, which pertains to a place of the discipline on the epistemological plane. In the chapter I present analyses relating to particular cognitive background of speech therapy and its place amongst other disciplines. My considerations underscore the originality of speechtherapy approach – considered against the background of other scientific fields – in case of impediments in producing peripherally-determined phonemes. In Chapter 2 of the monograph I investigate issues of diagnosis and treatment of phoneme production disorders as speech-therapy procedures. The chapter commences enumeration of assumptions embedding the subsequent comments. Assuming a number of notions fundamental for both linguistics and speech therapy imposes some order on thinking and allows the Readers to notice the broader context behind the topic this treatise is concerned with. Consecutive parts of Chapter 2 deal with the significance of diagnosis in its heuristic dimension for designing and carrying out treatment. I assume that what ought to result from the examination process of a given speech impediment’s symptom along with its aetiology, is not solely establishing the name of a given nosological unit relating to the diagnosed condition, but also preparing a kind of diagnostic narrative depicting mechanism behind occurrence of speech impediments, however, within the confines of up-to-date knowledge (thus, I do not discard the event that contemporary speech therapy is oblivious to some causes of speech disorders, which results from the scope of human knowledge coming from various disciplines dealing with speech, e.g. medicine). The mode of operation defined in such a way enables us to reconstruct the development of speech disorder. In the discussed chapter I also comment upon early and contemporary approaches to treatment of phoneme production disorders. Having paid a necessary homage to the work of past researchers, I undertake analyses that show both advantages and deficits characterising hitherto used methods of treatment, also in the context of the most recent studies of phoneme production disorders. Chapter 3 is focused on methodology of research, including problems, hypotheses and methods of studies, accepted terms and assumptions, ordering the research process; therein I also discuss the limits of research carried out. The major study problem is assessing the efficiency of speech therapy with the usage of previously mentioned SMIPI method.. Among the most important research methods the following can be counted: analytical-phonetic method of speech evaluation, anatomical-functional method of assessing speech organs (anatomical structure of speech organs, the respiratory, swallowing, and chewing processes), interview, an experimental study consisting in carrying out speech therapy (based on SMIPI, and akin to it – FTM, Polish fizjologiczna terapia miofunkcjonalna ‘physiological myofunctional therapy’) encompassing 69 subject, 3 to 40 years of age (they were divided into three age groups), and finally, analysing the research results and establishing statistical correlation. In turn, Chapter 4 of the monograph gives the account of research results referring to efficiency of utilizing SMIPI method and provides analyses of the studied facets of therapeutic efficiency: the pace of improvements taking place that regard primary functions (e.g. initiating vertical-horizontal tongue position, initiating tongue resting posture, initiating proper swallowing), the rate of uttering/emitting the initial sound, the pace of transformations occurring within the patients’ phonetic system. This part of the monograph also contains some linguistic and speech-therapy analyses pertaining to important, from the vantage point of designing and carrying out therapy, aspects of undertaken actions, such as sequencing of speech-sounds disorders therapy and methods of prompting speech sounds. I also discuss the “domino effect” and selfregulation phenomenon it involves. In my analyses of SMIPI method’s efficiency, I devise the general approach (relating to the results of therapy distinguished for the age group of patients) as well as individual one (relating to therapy efficiency in case of a particular patient). The research results indicate that SMIPI is an efficient treatment method, however, its efficiency varies dependent on age group. In the aspect of normalizing primary abilities, the rate of attaining desired changes is greater in persons 15 to 40 years of age than in children 3 to 6 years of age. The research results show, in turn, that the latter group displays the greatest improvements in terms of phonetic changes. The chapter that follows is a summarizing one, and it distinguishes the crucial research results from the analyses undertaken along with proposals of future necessary analyses and empirical procedures pertaining to upcoming scientific problems. In this part, I additionally address so-called wizardry and tricks used while eliciting sounds, the issue of so-called therapeutic methods universality, and I also present SMIPI against the backdrop of different ways of speech-therapy interventions. Finally, I account for the possibility to alter or modify the mode of proceeding I propose.

Uczeni z odległej i nieodległej przeszłości. Rekonstrukcje, interpretacje, refleksje

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

Human life may be subjected to explanation, interpretation, reconstruction and even to constructing, from a certain point of view. In recent years a biography, both as a subject (the account of one’s life) and as a methodological orientation or a method of academic research, has been experiencing a renaissance. This, in turn, led the author to study biographies of researchers, in particular, to transpose their achievements to modern cultural resources of, especially, pedagogical sub-disciplines. According to the author it is not enough and to merely explore the institution of the university (or any other attended by high-school) or the social processes and mechanisms affecting such institutions. Among distinct advantages of a biography is also the fact that it provides personalized scientific facts which can only be known through empathy and reflexive astuteness, thus clearing the way to much-desired humanisation of learning. As a general rule, a biography portrays a person’s life story, in close association with his or her personality. This may prove useful in the interpretation of the life stories of researchers presented in this study. It may also be helpful when one undertakes to transpose the experiences of researchers to the system of views, beliefs and values of the recipients of their academic output. The thoughts contained in this book/work studied lead to numerous conclusions related (but not restricted) to the academic activity of the examined researchers.1 Biographies of researchers, irrespective of the epoch in which they lived, reflect specific features, tendencies and even regularities of their functioning. Despite the difficulties that researchers have struggled with for centuries, there still is a relatively large group of those willing to join the ranks of scientific workers. Cognitive abilities and strong research interests, however, are rather unique today, hence it is certainly prudent to protect individuals possessing such traits and to support their scientific development, removing obstacles or problems researchers typically encounter. This paper offers an interdisciplinary insight into science studies and as such, it is addressed to researchers representing all kinds of science and its subdisciplines. It is also recommended for students (including doctoral students) and institutions cooperating with universities and making practical use of research outcomes, breakthroughs, inventions or rationalization in a variety of spheres. It is our belief that this paper may also prove interesting for the family members of researchers; in reading it one may better understand the specific problems related to the profession of one’s father, mother, sister, brother, grandmother, grandfather etc. The paper should also be read by psychologists, pedagogues, teachers, educators, guardians and animators of the youth since it is them who diagnose and shape the interests and cognitive passions of their learners and prepare them for possible future university careers. Zazdrość i działalność naukowa. Studium z zakresu naukoznawstwa pedagogicznego

Author(s): Alicja Żywczok / Language(s): Polish

The author decided to focus this research project on the issue of destruction in the academic development not in order to brand the evil existing in a certain environment, institution or an occupational group. One of her motives was the desire and the necessity to reveal the stumbling blocks in the academic development in the form of “artificial obstacles”, created by jealous individuals, which strain the relationships and complicate the progress of academic career for others, especially as regards the practice of unequal treatment of employees (not always in the form of mobbing, but relatively often – as distributive inequality). Among other motives for focusing this research on jealousy was the author’s concern and worry for the quality of life of researchers as well as the quality of their occupational activity (dynamism of individual academic development). The aim of this study, whose results are hereby published, was to fathom the opinions of academics (researchers and academic teachers) concerning the symptoms, types and conditions, as well as ways of preventing chronic jealousy in this occupational group. Increased and long-term jealousy, manifested most often in the form of hostile behavior towards other employees has come to be considered as an inhibitor of scientific development, that is to say a factor that makes it difficult both for the person who feels jealous and for the person who becomes the object of jealousy, to carry on a relatively normal occupational life. The structure of this monograph (250 pages) contains the answers to the research problems and outlines how these answers were reached. Apart from the table of contents and a detailed introduction (which justifies the undertaken scope of the studied problems, describes the methodological and organizational foundations for the study and presents the structure itself of the monograph), the work contains 7 chapters closely related as regards the studied subject matter, the end, bibliography, personal index, a summary with key words and a note on the author.

Sondażowe zwierciadło europeizacji. Monitorowanie trendów europejskiej opinii publicznej w międzykrajowych sondażach porównawczych jako wyzwanie metodologiczne

Author(s): Piotr Jabkowski / Language(s): Polish

This book considers the methodological challenges of studying Europeans' attitudes towards the European Union and European integration process, measured over 20 years within four prominent pan-European multi-wave transnational comparative surveys, i.e., Eurobarometer, the European Social Survey, the European Values Studies and the International Social Survey Program. The primary goal is to present the main challenges stemming from the diversity of research issues and the different objectives of individual projects, as well as those stemming from the specific ways in which questions are formulated, the different measurement methodologies and survey procedures, and the variable quality of the surveys. The first chapter presents the abundance of survey projects carried out on the European continent since the mid-1970s. The second chapter analyses the variation in the wording of questions about European integration and the impact of this wording on the survey results. The third chapter presents the variation in sampling and fieldwork procedures implemented in four projects. The final chapter analyses the quality of over 1,400 national surveys, which allowed the impact of different fieldwork procedures on survey process quality to be assessed. The conclusion recommends taking into account project-specific field sample implementation in the analysis of data from transnational comparative surveys.
