On the basis of European culture, the Vienna Workshops are one of the best-known examples of implementing the assumptions of the Arts and Crafts movement created in the 19th century. The activities undertaken by the artists associated with the Workshops have significantly contributed to the development of book art, especially the decoration of binding. While creating them, manual methods were returned, using the involvement of the best craftsmen - bookbinders or goldsmiths. Due to the significant impact of the Workshops' activities on the book culture in Europe and the artistic value of their design binding, which is still valued today, this issue is discussed in the article based on the Max Morgenstern collection. The history of the creation of the Vienna Workshop was outlined, with particular emphasis on the bookbinding workshop, and the biography of M. Morgenstern, one of the best workshop customers. However, the main part of the article is to discuss the artistic solutions used in the design of the luminaires and show their application on the example of the collection in question. Issues of authorship and the specificity of materials that artists and craftsmen used in the Vienna Workshops will also be addressed.

Ekslibris – the book ownership mark, has a tradition dating back more than five centu-ries. The history of this form of graphic design is closely connected with the epoch-making inven-tion of the font by Jan Gutenberg and the printing of incunabula - the first books. It grew and ma-tured where the book and the library appeared. Initially, it was a carrier of information about its owner. Over the centuries, it has undergone numerous transformations, which were related to cur-rent artistic trends, but also to the personal preferences of the clients. The changes also concerned graphic techniques. The 20th century brought a rebirth of cult and book decoration. On the one hand, it was greatly influenced by the development of modern graphics as an autonomous and inde-pendent visual discipline, on the other hand, it was influenced by the intensification and the need to search for new means of expression within the style and form of the bookshop. Today, a large number of bibliophiles have their own exlibris, often a few. In the era of ubiquitous digitization, dynamic development of technology and techniques, its use undoubtedly proves high cultural needs, respect for books and great care for them. Ekslibris can still be described as the emblem of the bibliophile.

The collection of early printed books stored in the National Archives in Krakow has not been processed so far. This article aims to approximate the current state of knowledge regarding the contents of the collection. The historic book collection of the Archives, represented by both Polish and foreign printed books covering various subjects, numbers slightly over 650 works issued before 1801. Included in this number are 28 early printed books from the 16th century, 210 from the 17th century and 413 from the 18th century. The oldest one – Liber horarum canonicarum secundum veram rubricam sive notulam ecclesiae Cracoviensis – was issued in 1508 by the publishing house of Jan Haller in Krakow. The origins of the early printed books vary – they come from donations, acquisitions of archival materials as well as purchases. The greatest number come from donations, with the following donors worthy of special mention: Ambroży Grabowski, Józef Seruga and Franciszek Biesiadecki, as well as Józef Muczkowski, Karol Estreicher and others. An invaluable part of the collection (61 works) are the printed books from the library of Hieronim Pinocci (1612–1676), a merchant, royal secretary and diplomat, acquired from the town archives at the end of the 19th century. Many works, especially those concerning the history of Krakow, were also purchased using the funds of the Archives. The early printed books gathered in the library of the National Archives in Krakow create a particularly valuable collection, which may also be a source of information concerning provenance.

Documentation for works of art and description of the conservation process are subject to many scientific studies and discussions. On the one hand, they explore documentation that provides a detailed description of the object, his identification, and history of creation, discovery, acquisition, and entry into public or private collection. On the other hand, the conservation documentation has the objective to be as inclusive as possible and comprise all the conservation processes to which an artwork has been subjected. Thus, conservation documentation incorporates a great volume of information, which is expected to be most inclusive at the present time and remain current (as long as possible) in the future. Consequently, the conservation documentation should be as comprehensive as possible and therefore constituting a semi-universal document. The present study of documentation and universality examines the possibility of a universal documentation form created for the conservation of art objects; discusses methods for documentation, and outlines contemporary high-technological documentation systems such as Digital Asset Management System (DAMS), Collections Management System (CMS), and Spectrum.
