Hotelarstwo w zabytkowych rezydencjach jako czynnik modyfikujący otoczenie

Author(s): Rafał Rouba / Language(s): English,Polish

The most striking aspects of the contemporary world are the globalization, standardization and unification. Because of the continuous technological progress the reality is no longer created by nature or artists, but by emotionless computers. The whole world has become homogenized by big-box retails stores and products made in China, passion has been replaced with pursuit of money, aesthetics with ergonomics, and precious materials with cheap substitutes. These changes are also reflected in tourism, which gains importance in today's world and whose aims are among others to help people having fast-paced lifestyles to maintain physical and mental health and well-being in a place other than their normal place of residence and work. The antidote to this highly commercial reality are heritage residencies – full of mystery, romanticism and childhood dreams. Hotels operating in heritage buildings offer unique combination of accommodation and tourism experience. What they offer is not only a safe place, comfortable bed or tasty meal, but also tangible links to the Polish history. In Poland revitalization of heritage residencies through conversion to hotels has been gaining importance for several dozen years. At the end of the first decade of the 21st century there are approximately 500 palaces, manor houses and castles that offer lodging and conference services for business travelers, and each year new establishments open. This paper presents the results of the author's own studies of a group of 180 Polish historic palaces, manor houses and castles converted into hotels, carried out in the beginning of the 21st century.

POGRANICZE POLSKO-NIEMIECKIE JAKO PRZESTRZEŃ SOCJALIZACJI

Swojskość i utrata. Obrazy Górnego Śląska w literaturze polskiej i czeskiej po 1989 roku

Author(s): Karolina Pospiszil - Hofmańska / Language(s): Polish

The aim of the book is to represent and to analyze the most important elements of literary depictions of Upper Silesia in the latest Polish and Czech literature. The author applies the methodology connected with special turn and tries to represent the fullest analysis of the representations of the region in question. She analyses a several dozens of literary texts and texts of culture (in broad understanding of this term) trying to answer, among others, the following questions: how Upper Silesia is represented in literature, why was it so late that somebody got interested in the region and whether there is any Silesian model of writing. The book consists of three parts. The first of them is devoted to spatial turn and the possibilities that it opens for literary studies. The most important trends in contemporary thinking about space are depicted, including those which had anticipated the special turn. The author concentrates mostly on those methodologies that she calls “geo-tools”, that is: geopoetics (in its specifically Polish understanding), literary geography and a few of its variants and on geocriticism. An important trend in this part of reflection upon space and its connections with culture is new regionalism. The author, while discussing this important for literature concerning Silesia phenomenon, attempts to represent the most important definitions of region and regionalism as well as to point toward a few research possibilities opened by new regionalism. The second part of the dissertation concentrates on “imagined space-time continua” of Silesia. The author depicts the borders of Silesia and its parts on the basis of several historical and geographic publications, proceeding toward the 20th-century imaginations of Silesia depicted not only on the basis of literary texts. The third part is devoted mostly to literary texts in Polish and Czech and the representations of Upper Silesia which are given in this literature. According to the author, the literary images of Upper Silesia are fragmentary and incomplete and most of them concentrates on a few central categories: home/familiarity (borderland, multiculturality, multilingualism, roots, the feeling of being at home), death/loss (language, memory, relatives, identity, “the old Silesia”, greenness (greenness in the city, parks, forests, agriculture) and blackness (industry, cities, pollution, poisoning, mourning).

Jewish self-defense (Special Commission), like other forms of community life of Polish Jews, was a kind of sensation in Poland after World War II. It was created as a result of a wave of murders in the country, “anti-Jewish provocations, assaults on trains and the killing of Jewish passengers and, finally, the culmination of anti-Jewish activity of armed bands”, which was the Kielce pogrom of July 4, 1946. Actually, the Commission operated for a very short time, only until the end of May 1947. In total, 200 guard groups were formed consisting of 2,500 armed people (with approximately 1,000 rifles, 100 automatic weapons, over 1,000 pistols and 120 grenades), providing a round-the-clock protection of close to 390 objects of the following Jewish institutions: committees, child care homes, nursing homes, repatriate homes, schools, canteens, cooperatives, factories employing a larger number of Jews, Jewish parties, kibbutzim. The establishment of special commissions fulfilled its purpose – about 2,000 interventions, at various levels of government, were carried out throughout Poland, as a result of which attacks or provocations were thwarted and the danger was averted. Apart from performing the primary function of self-defense, the commission’s activity had a significant psychological impact. The presence of guards armed with rifles and automatic weapons in the vicinity of Jewish institutions eased somewhat the “prevailing moods of panic” among Jews that had been caused by the Kielce pogrom. It also had a deterrent effect on potential attackers, or neutralized the willingness to show hostile attitudes towards those who identified themselves as Jewish. The commissions also helped to manage the need, which many Jews had had since the beginning of the war, to stand up for the nation undergoing systematic extermination.

Středověký šperk: Archeologické nálezy z jižní Moravy

Author(s): Věra Šlancarová / Language(s): Czech

The present work represents the first comprehensive survey of medieval jewellery located in museum depositories, galleries and archaeological institutions of South Moravia. Into the collection, the author has included items from 79 localities: 45 urban towns, 11 castles and 23 other locations (current and former villages and cultural sites). The selection has been limited to the High Middle Ages, i.e. mainly to the 13th–15th centuries, possibly extending into older and younger periods. The core of the work is comprised of a catalogue of objects with drawings or photographic documentation accompanied by detailed descriptions. The catalogue of finds is fully available in electronic form in the Digital Library of the Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University, Brno. In the analytical part of the thesis, the objects are evaluated in terms of typology and morphology, including comparisons with finds from other locations. This allows the jewellery to be set in contemporaneous context in terms of its functional, aesthetic and symbolic significance.

Metalurgická produkční sféra na Českomoravské vrchovině v závěru přemyslovské éry

Author(s): Petr Hrubý / Language(s): Czech

To this day, problems like technological practice, infrastructure of mines and smelteries or occupational spectrum and living conditions in mining settlements have been rather studied by a specific group of archaeologists. However, it is evident that silver production, which was a characteristic phenomenon of later Middle Ages in the Czech lands, remains only an abstract concept when we do not acquire as much as possible knowledge about the mine workings, preparatory plants, metallurgical facilities and mining settlements from the end of the Přemyslid era. The main objective therefore did not consist in description of political situation connected with the 13th century boom of silver mining in Bohemia, emergence of mining administration, mining rights or minting reform; all this was already done many times. The aim of the book is to clearly outline the situation with ore mining and metallurgy in medieval landscape. The research methods applied meet the standards of interdisciplinary approach, but the essence of the topic is rooted in history.

La Bessarabie. Étude historique, ethnographique et économique

Author(s): Antony Babel / Language(s): French

Basically, the question of Bessarabia arises, now, as in the past, in relation to that of the Straits. The importance of Bessarabia's wheat lands may also have something to do with the attitude of the Russian government as it attempts to resume grain exports to Europe after several years of crop failures. or even starvation. But the main thing is not there. Since Finland, the Baltic States and Poland have severely restricted Russia’s access to the Baltic Sea, it has attached greater importance than ever to the Black Sea problem. // What the Soviets see above all in Bessarabia is a territory which would allow them to get closer to Constantinople and the Straits - which they continue to consider as the door of their house - and which, moreover, their would make it possible to control the mouths of the Danube. This, it seems, is the real meaning of their attitude on the Bessarabia question. In this area, as in many others, Bolshevik imperialism is a fairly exact continuation of the old Tsarist imperialism. (conclusion by the author) . // PUBLISHED BY LIBRAIRIE FÉLIX ALCAN (Paris)

Die Balkanländer. Bd. I

Author(s): Émile Louis Victor de Laveleye / Language(s): German

My path leads me again to the Slav peoples of the Danube and Balkan countries. I want to see how the Zadrugas — the home or family communities — which excited me so much on my journey in 1867, have changed since then. Leroy-Beaulieu and Moritz Block severely criticized my antiquated conception of those venerable communities, while Stuart Mill shared it and Henry Maine understood it. Under Bishop Strossmayr's guidance, I will first inspect the Zadrugas of Slavonia in the Djakovo area, then I will continue my observations in Bosnia, Serbia and Bulgaria, learning about the political and economic situation of these countries, which I have already discussed in my book »Prussia and Austria since Sadowa«. The favorable opportunity to undertake such investigations must be seized without hesitation, because a rapid transformation is taking place under the influence of railways, new constitutions and closer ties with Western Europe. The inhabitants of those countries will soon exchange their peculiar, hundred-year-old customs and customs, their picturesque costumes for what ist usually called modern civilization, and then regulate their whole way of thinking and living in the manner of Paris or London. I hear tremendous changes have taken place since 1867. (From the author's introduction)

Die Balkanländer. Bd. II

Author(s): Émile Louis Victor de Laveleye / Language(s): German

Since the publication of the first volume of my book on the Balkans, everyone has been looking at them with growing fear. It is feared that a clash is taking place there between the Russians and Austrians, affecting all the peoples of Europe and North Asia, from Mount Etna to the North Cape and from the Atlantic Ocean to the distant shores of the Pacific and the mouths of the Amur. But how can the events in Bulgaria, which is so far away, threaten the peace that all peoples and, it seems, all princes want to keep? Well, we are standing at a turning point in history, where the die is to be cast that will decide the fortunes of the East and consequently also of the West. (From the author's introduction)
