The introduction of Giorgio Agamben’s book entitled Stanzas, Word and Phantasm in Western Culture is about the relationship of philosophy and poetry to knowledge in Western culture. The stanza is “the essential nucleus” of Tuscan poetry in the thirteenth century. It is actually an invention of Tuscan poets who call stanzas the parts that compose every canzone. Stanza is a word for chamber in Tuscan dialect as well as in Italian. Agamben points out that what makes possible its poetical existence is the fact that a stanza is a topos outopos, a topos which contains its own negation: it is the reality of unreality. Agamben’s thesis is that Western culture has forgotten the unitary status the Western word had until the thirteenth century. The thirteenth century could still conceive poetic activity as a philosophical one and then Western culture has known a separation between two poles that define knowledge and word. This paper aims to investigate the relationship between knowledge and words in Derrida, Rancière and Agamben.

TRAUMATIC RELIVING IN CLASSIC FICTION PART II

This study explores six literary classics that turn on a mechanism well known to psychohistory whereby the victim of a traumatic experience may afterwards contrive unawares to relive it in thin disguise. In the earliest of the six, Euripides’ Ion, an unwed princess tearfully puts out her newborn son from a rape to die; he survives, their paths later cross, and she, recognizing him unconsciously, again tries to kill him, again unsuccessfully. In the second, the Francesca canto of Dante’s Divine Comedy, two adulterous lovers caught and murdered in the act are doomed to relive the fatal moment symbolically ever after. In the third, Racine’s Athaliah, a queen has her own progeny put to the knife because of the guilt of her husband’s blood line in her mother’s ghastly death; years later she revisits that trauma in a nightmare, with the result that this time she calls for a grandson who had survived in secret to turn that same knife on her. Next comes Edgar Allan Poe’s eerie Ulalume, with its poet narrator retracing in a trance the steps by which he bore his beloved to her tomb the year before. The fifth is Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick, about a demonic ship’s captain doggedly hunting down a white whale that once severed one of his legs and that this time finishes him off. Finally, Henrik Ibsen’s Rosmersholm centers around a widower who, haunted by his late wife’s suicide, grooms her successor to commit that same suicide. The close study of each work in turn concludes with a comparison of the various aspects of traumatic reliving as between these six characteristic uses of it in fiction and the real-life pattern.

Secondly, to find common ground between him and the Italian poet Giuseppe Ungaretti, to study the hermetic influence on Camaj’s poetics, highlighting the aesthetic mastery in obtaining these interesting and complex elements, which Camaj manages to adapt to his own art. This approach of Camaj’s poetics to that of Ungaretti is non accidental, recognizing the wide influence that the Italian hermetics led by Ungaretti had in the early twentieth century.

On June 15, 1389 Serbian troops and their allies were defeated by the Turks on the Kosovo field. Many valiant Christian fighters and the Serbian prince Lazar Hrebljanović, who was sanctified by the Orthodox Church, fell in the battle. The disaster of the Christian army paved the way for the Ottoman invasion of the Balkan Peninsula, but the defeat assumed the value of a myth for the Serbian people, which accompanied their existence over the centuries as a model of sacrifice and love of the country.

The article deals with the analysis of Italian and Croatian translations of constructivist poems (the “conses”) by Srečko Kosovel, one of the most important Slovene poets. The translations of selected Kosovel’s constructivist poems are analysed by using Andrew Chesterman’s translation strategies. The analysis shows that, for the most part, in Croatian and Italian translations the literal translation strategy prevails, with Italian translations including more frequently other translation possibilities. In general, both translators have strived to preserve the multifaceted aspects of Kosovel’s constructivist poems by adopting a predominantly foreignising translation approach.

The research paper focuses on the cultural and moral identity in Umberto Eco’s reflections. Attention is paid to the selected pieces. Umberto Eco is one of the most famous contemporary writers dealing with the issues of morality in Italian society. His works are devoted to the current perception of identity in the 21st century. The authors are interested in his view on values and identity in the selected chapters of his work. The aim of the paper is to analyse the identity issue in Umberto Eco’s works. The research objectives are based on recent doubts in cultural studies whether identity is fixed and firmly defined or acquired by a human being freely. Another question is the link between these two aspects. Although the origin of the word identity comes from Latin (idem - the same), nowadays it is more understood in its diversity as linguistic, cultural, national, moral identity, etc.

The Passion of Jesus Christ is a popular devotional text created to promote the worship of Christ’s blood and wounds. It originated in the early modern times as an echo of late medieval listing and counting forms of piety. A typical early modern version of the Passion of Jesus Christ consists of Christ’s address to three women mystics who prayed for a revelation of the number of blows and drops of blood he shed during the Passion, a description of devotional practice in honor of the Passion, a list of graces that can be obtained by such devotion, and the attribution of apotropaic properties to its copies. It has been shown that the text was circulated in numerous cultures (e.g., English, Ethiopian, German, Irish, Italian), however, its early modern dissemination in the cultural area of Glagolitic literacy has not been treated. This paper analyzes the surviving Croatian Glagolitic attestations of the Passion of Jesus Christ by situating them in a broader comparative context. The comparison of the Croatian Glagolitic Passion of Jesus Christ with an Italian amulet found in Roccapelago (Emilia-Romagna) revealed that this text appeared in the Croatian Glagolitic cultural area as the result of a trans-Adriatic cultural transfer. Moreover, the paper shows that Croatian Glagolitic writers not only disseminated the Passion of Jesus Christ in codices, but indeed utilized it as a template in the production of textual amulets.

Over the last hundred years and since the Second World War at the speed of the Great Acceleration, the Anthropocene has been intensively impacting the Northeast of Italy and, as a result, redrawn the Triangolo Industriale, shifting it towards the East, whereby its two prior western cities – Turin and Genoa – have been replaced with the production hubs scattered along the Via Emilia and Veneto. The coastal region has seen the foundation and robust growth of Porto Marghera with its freight, metallurgy, chemical, mechanical, shipbuilding, oil and electricity sectors; the Veneto plain has witnessed an expansion of SMEs; and Emilia has become home to multinational corporations. While not subject to industrialisation, the mountains of the Triveneto have not been exempt from a thorough modernisation on the scale unparalleled in the Italian Alps. Considering these changes, this paper surveys a range of literary works from Salgari to Scarpa (via Albertazzi, Zavattini, Buzzati, Guerra, D’Arzo, Pratt, Malerba, Altan, Nanetti, Benni, Rigoni Stern, Molesini, Costa, Corona, Carminati, Sgardoli, Tamaro, Tessaro and Ervas) in order to establish what role is given to environmental issues by the authors of children’s literature in the Northeast and whether (dis)continuities emerge in the body of their writings in this respect. The paper also investigates which authors present an active sensitivity useful for fostering an eco-consciousness and in what ways they do so. The methodology combines an array of critical tools developed in eco-pedagogical criticism, ecofeminism and the NatCul Matrix, geared to answering a series of questions: (1) Is basic environmental literacy offered? (2) Is a critical reflection on human primacy and environmental (in)sustainability implicit, explicit or absent? (3) How are humanity and nature related in children’s literature? (4) How is eco-justice approached? (5) What attitudinal role does the narrative assign to nature?

"Wasted world" o "sporco mondo": tradurre i testi divulgativi per ragazzi sull’ambiente

The paper focuses on the Italian translations of two English informational books for children: Wasted World (2009) and Kids Fight Climate Change (2020), which deal with environmental issues. Informational books texts result from a complex dissemination process aimed at making specialised knowledge comprehensible to young readers. To achieve this purpose, informational books rely on various discursive popularising strategies, such as an array of explanations, and various methods for eliciting readers’ engagement, such as questions and irony. Indeed, they are part of what has come to be known as “edutainment,” in which education and entertainment are intertwined to create a “hybrid genre” (Buckingham and Scanlon, 2005). As the texts examined in the paper engage with ecology and environmental issues, they have a dual purpose: to inform and to raise awareness (ecoliteracy). Despite the importance of popularising texts, the translation of such products is still an underexplored field of research. The comparative analysis of the two English texts and their respective Italian translations centres on how global warming and climate change are described in the source and target texts. It examines how the popularising strategies are translated, given their importance in knowledge dissemination for children. The findings indicate that Italian translations, though retaining the combination of education and entertainment, tend to be more precise and more complex than the source texts. This is in line with the intercultural differences identified between Low Context (LC) cultures and High Context (HC) cultures.

“Questa siepe”. On Leopardi’s Infinity between Translation and Interpretation. This study aims to analyse the translation of Giacomo Leopardi’s Infinito in Romanian made by Eta Boeriu (1923-1984) and of some other modern translations of this poem in Romanian. The author demonstrates that the translation of Eta Boeriu is still the most refined one, so we will compare it especially with the variants of Lascăr Sebastian and Vasile Romanciuc. Using the concepts of Eugen Coșeriu’s translation theory (Coșeriu 2009), especially his references to meaning, designation and sense (Coșeriu 1991, 220-21), Damian focuses on the term “siepe” (“hedge”), on its role in creating the sense of limit and the infinity in the poetry and on its linguistic and cognitive synonyms in the different Romanian translations.

On a historical-linguistic and cultural level, the economic-financial and commercial terminology in Romanian has been influenced by the Italian language, not only during the process known as "re-Latinization", "re-Romanization" or "Romance westernization" of the Romanian language, but even before this linguistic-cultural phenomenon. On the other hand, certain terms defining social and economic realities that are now outdated and often forgotten, but also more recent terms testify to the complexity of relations between non-Romance lexical items and the Romance neologisms. The latter, by replacing pre-existing terms, have contributed to the modernization of the Romanian vocabulary. The article focuses on some words that serve us in illustrating these phenomena, highlighting the importance of the Italian influence - manifested as a single, multiple or internal etymology - and referring to the first written attestations in the two neo-Latin languages (with brief references, in some cases, to those in French and German) of the examined terms. By investigating the influence of the Italian language on the economic, business and financial-banking terms, selected from six specialized (online) dictionaries, our paper concludes with a glossary (available in Quaestiones Romanicae X) that allows us to track which Romanian terms have a unique Italian etymology and which ones, instead, belong to the "multiple etymology" category in the lexicographical works consulted.

The purpose of this speech is to analyze the circumstances that led Sardinian writer Emilio Lussu to convey his experience across his writing. At the very beginning, Lussu was an interventionist, and he strongly supported the Italian military intervention against the German Empire and Austria-Hungary during World War I. After the war, he founded the political party Partito Șardo d’Azione (“Șardinian Action Party”), a social-democratic movement that promoted autonomy towards the ideal of independence. He considered himself an antifascist activist. Due to his radical political views, in 1927 he was sentenced to 5 years of confinement on the island of Lipari. However, he managed to escape two years later. Together with Carlo Rosselli, he founded <<Giustizia e Libertà>> (“Justice and Freedom”), an antifascist resistance movement. These events largely influenced Lussu’s subjects in literature. He could elaborate and turn them into a collective consciousness, without setting aside the importance of each individual’s experience. Lussu’s bibliography becomes thus a way to understand the tragedy of the war in Italy and Europe. The first part of this lecture will introduce these subjects and their correlation to Lussu’s historical memory. Then, we’ll analyze the major works that best reflect his literary legacy, such as La catena, Marcia su Roma e dintorni (Road to exile. The story of a Sardinian Patriot), Un anno sull’altipiano (Sardinian Brigade) and Un bombardamento notturno.

L’eternità della poesia di Giacomo Leopardi sta nell’autonomia della sua creazione che si distacca nettamente dagli ottimismi della sua epoca e si delinea come pessimistica, però tuttavia non si deve leggere sempre e solo come frutto del pessimismo del poeta. Il presente saggio si concentra sui componimenti Canto notturno di un pastore errante dell’Asia e La ginestra o il fiore del deserto e in essi si cercano i mes- saggi che Leopardi tracciava nella bellezza della natura dove la posizione dell’uomo è incerta, senza importanza desiderata. Attraverso quei messaggi la poesia di Leopardi si cristalizza come risposta agli ottimismi dei suoi tempi e come invito al lettore a non fermarsi sul velo del pessimismo che copre il pensiero di Leopardi. Compresa in questo modo, la poesia di Leopardi si rivela un atto autonomo di creazione del poeta che ha voluto conservare la bellezza nella sua poesia.

Referințe biblice în traducerile românești ale „Infernului” dantesc

We cannot understand Dante and, above all, the ”Divine Comedy” if we abstract from Christian theology and its fundamental writing, the Bible. It is known and obvious that the ”Divine Comedy” draws its roots from the Bible, which cannot be abstracted from when interpreting the poem. The influence of the Bible on Dante's poem is manifested by references to passages, directly or allusively, to well-known characters, symbols or situations, both from Old and from New Testament. This article aims at exploring some of these references from the perspective of the meaning they acquire in Dante's work and then from the perspective of their translation into Romanian. We will consider the most famous translations of ”Inferno” made in the 20th-21st centuries, in order to observe to what extent they manage to convey the meanings of the original.

In the biographical note of the latest edition of Pinocchio by the Everyman publishing house, we learn that the creator of Pinocchio, Carlo Collodi, never had children (Collodi 2011:9). Any reader of this book will understand why. Collodi, apparently, did not like children. It seems that this animosity was especially directed at the boys. Every boy in Pinocchio is imbecile, disobedient, greedy, dirty. But none is worse than Pinocchio himself. Collodi describes him as a "wretched", "naughty" slobber, a klipan, a slob and a self-willed vagabond. "Poor boy!" he is mourned by his father, the old carpenter Geppetto. The first thing the magical doll does when it comes to life is to growl in Geppetto's face. Right after that, he steals a wig from a sad old man.
