Carl Friedrich Rammelsberg and the Early Diffusion of the Periodic Table of Dmitri Mendeleev

Author(s): Pierre-Léonard Zaffalon / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2017

When Dmitri Mendeleev (1834 – 1907) proposed his periodic law in 1869 on a pedagogical purpose, few teachers were enthusiastic. However, as early as 1873, a manual of chemistry already reproduced his periodic table. A renowned German chemist wrote it: Carl Friedrich Rammelsberg (1813 – 1899). With the exception of the chemists involved in the classification of the elements, he was, as far as we know, the first to present the periodic table of Mendeleev in a textbook.

AFRICA IN QUEST OF STABILITY? REFLECTIONS INSPIRED BY THE CURRENT PROBLEMS OF HUMANITY

Author(s): Alphonse Zozime Tamekamta / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2018

This study proposes to analyze the determinants of the volatile situation of Africa and its capacity of adaptation or appropriation of the global stakes, with regard to the current problems of the humanity, described in the work coordinated by the Professor Dumitru Otovescu. Africa is considered here as a field of application since this continent is subject to all attention eye, all anxieties and all hopes. To lead this reflection, three methods of data collection were favoured: First, the ethnographic method which involved neutral direct observation. Observation provides information about social and political actors. Then, the interviews (unstructured, semi-structured and standardized) that gave rise to conversations, formal and informal, conducted on the basis of an interview guide, a questionnaire or a survey, structured around from subject. Finally, the exploitation of newspaper articles, magazines and periodicals, various reports, books, etc. At the end of this work, it is observed that Africa suffers as much as the other continents the volatility of the banking and economic system due to the practice of capitalism. Although sector-specific (developed-country) and global responses have been taken following several global economic and financial crises, Africa has remained isolated and compartmentalized. Today, its galloping demography and the extreme youth of its population as well as the natural wealth at its disposal are the basis of the hope of Africa. In contrast, the segmentation of its economic recovery programs, the tribulations of the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD), the faculties of its political governance and the recurrence of crises and complex escapes.

CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE AFTER THE END OF COMMUNISM: THE BEGINNING OF RELATIONS WITH THE EUROPEAN UNION: THE CASE OF UKRAINE (1991-1999)

Author(s): Cesar Garcia Andres / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2018

The countries that were part of the Soviet Union were forced to start on their own the democratic process after the disintegration of the communist bloc. These countries had to enter the new world order that had been unknown to them. Two ways were developed in order to achieve their development as newly independent states. Firstly, the new independence countries have opened up to the European Community in the 90s. And secondly, the countries that remained linked to Russia in order to achieve the stability of those first moments. In the case of Ukraine, its path as an independent country began on 24 August 1991, and since that year its main task has been to strengthen its position as a state. Ukraine initially remained linked to Russia somehow through different policies. However, there was a change due to Ukraine's need for assistance in different areas: from social and political to economic. From this moment the institutions of the European Union came into play in Ukraine to promote its modernization and democratization. It is necessary to know which were these means and how they have served to advance these relations until the entry into force of the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement in 1998. In order to carry out this analysis we will address with specialized monographs and articles related to these subjects, as well as the extensive documentation provided by the European institutions.

Русифициране на градското пространство. Варшава и провинциалните градове на кралство Полша през ХІХ и началото на ХХ в.

Author(s): Andrzej Szwarc / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 6/2016

From the late nineteenth century together with the rise of modern nationalism, a widely spread belief is that there is a natural antagonism between the nations, which also affects the field of culture. This seems particularly clear in the territories inhabited by people of ethnic groups that are not dominant and constitute the centralized European powers such as unified Germany and Russia. The article presents some aspects of the Russia‘s cultural policy towards Polish lands in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Part of this policy is the construction of monumental objects with civilian or religious purpose in the Polish cities, whose architecture hints at Russian traditions and their functions are considered a symbol of foreign domination.

Le dialogue pédagogique en tant qu’outil de la médiation cognitive en classe de langue. Cas des élèves en difficulté d’apprentissage

Author(s): Jolanta Sujecka-Zając / Language(s): French Issue: 4/2016

We would like to propose in this article an innovative approach to dialogue in a language class going beyond its usual function of only being a means to develop the communicative competence in a foreign language. From our point of view, the dialogue of an educational and formative type allows to give better tools of thinking to the learner and to remedy to his deficits in his learning ability, this through exchange around ways of learning and his mental processes. In the theoretical framework thus defined are concepts that have proven themselves in different educational contexts: the pedagogical dialogue of Antoine de La Garanderie, the explication interview of Pierre Vermersch and the cognitive interview aiming at Learning of Michael Perraudeau and Maria Pagoni. On the basis of these analyses, we conducted our research that aims to demonstrate the value of dialogue in a language class, especially for students with learning difficulties. In the article we present the main lines of this reflection and examples of dialogues with Polish students in a school in Warsaw.

The paper presents a correlation model based upon Piaget’s phenomena and Binet-Terman’s intelligence test. There are approaches pointed out in the paper, which can determine an individual’s mental age via conducting J. Piaget’s experiments as well as vice versa – via determining Piaget’s stage the IQ can be specified. The suggested Model would allow the mainstream teacher as well as the team of experts assisting personality development in the school, to easily orientate in the abilities a student with special educational needs has and to design his/her individual programs so that they would correspond to his/her development.

Фокус групата като метод при оценяване на приложението на Закона за защита от домашно насилие

Author(s): Georgi Dimitrov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 4/2019

Focus groups are appropriate method for studying the practices of preventing domestic violence at a regional level. The method provides a reflexive space for identification of collective insights in the course of group interactions and preservation and registration of the implicit individual preferences of participants in the group discussion. Focus groups are organized in order to study the relationships of the target groups with the institutions in Razgrad district and the extent of their involvement in the process of prevention of domestic violence. Sharing of own experiences and ideas and the interactive comparison of the viewpoints of the participants that arise during group interactions in thematic focus groups, provide a more complete picture of the phenomena studied. The dynamics of symbolic interactions and the social exchange of information in the group process of the focus group reveals additional, subdivided views on the content and validity of the empirical data collected by this method. The focus groups do not apply the survey-specific pressures for a structured response to the moderator’s questions, which allows a higher level of authentic sharing and understanding of the experiences, attitudes, practices and relationships presented.

Speech Disfluencies of Preschool-age Children Who Do and Do Not Stutter

Author(s): Yulia O. Filatova,Dobrinka Georgieva / Language(s): English Issue: 5/2019

The purpose of the present study was to determine (i) the frequency of normal disfluency (ND) and stuttered disfluency (SD) in young children who stutter (CWS) and who do not stutter (CWNS) and (ii) whether SD serves as a risk factor for stuttering in CWNS. Participants were 30 preschool-age CWS (n = 14) and CWNS (n = 16). The speech (dis)fluency of all participants was measured from 100 words selected from samples of each child’s conversation and storytelling using the Vanderbilt University (Nashville, TN, USA) Disfluency Count Sheet. Results indicated that CWS, when compared to CWNS, significantly differed in stuttered but not in non-stuttered disfluencies. Within-group analysis indicated that CWS exhibited a significant relation between total speech disfluencies and an index of stuttering severity and that a relatively few CWNS (n = 4) exhibited a percentage of total and stuttered disfluencies within the lower ends of the distribution for CWS. Findings appear to suggest that inclusion of the Vanderbilt Disfluency Count Sheet as part of a comprehensive diagnostic assessment of childhood stuttering helps fine-tune such assessment through consideration of both ND and SD in a child’s speech as well as the ratio between these measures of disfluency.

Училищна превенция на употребата на психоактивни вещества при ученици от V – VII клас

Author(s): Penka Kozhuharova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 8/2019

The aim of the study is to explore the trends in the alcohol and drug abuse among students from 5-th to 7-th grade and, subsequently, to define problematic areas as well as the appropriate interventions for the implementation of a prevention school-based program in this setting. The program builds on an on-going three year prevention among teenagers. It is run by a team of teachers, experts and young volunteers. The structure and the aspects of the program are presented. In 2017, the study was conducted by using standardized questionnaires and an intervention in a group of 1,396 7-th grade students from 36 schools in the South-Eastern Region of Bulgaria. Their results have been compared with a control group of 7-th grade students. The selected indicators for the assessment of the tobacco and alcohol abuse were: frequency of use, age at first alcohol or tobacco use, use patterns, and sexual development. Furthermore, risk factors as well as protective factors associated with the peers groups and family environment have been studied. Pedagogical aspects in the implementation of the school-based program were addressed by the awareness and attitudes of students towards drug abuse, a dedicated curriculum, methods and forms of preventive action. In conclusion, the established program managed to: reduce the proportion of students who smoke occasionally; delay the first tobacco use; decrease the rates of tobacco use when meeting peers. Although there was no significant overall difference between the two groups in the frequency of alcohol use, the frequency of alcohol abuse at parties decreased significantly; a higher proportion of students in the intervention group claimed not having friends who have ever tried drugs.

Модел на педагогическа среда с антидискриминационен компонент и формиране на позитивни нагласи към хора с различен етнически произход и хора с увреждания

Author(s): Sasho Nunev / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 9/2019

In the article, a research of the formation of positive attitudes towards people with different ethnic backgrounds and persons with disabilities in the social work students in the conditions of the model of pedagogical environment with an anti-discrimination component is presented. The sample and the research instruments used are consistent with the purpose and specificity of the research. The results of the statistical analysis of empirical data reveal the role and importance of the model of pedagogical environment to create conditions which stimulate students: to accept and value the cultural heritage of the communities and to respect the human dignity of their representatives; to know and study their own and of the people from different groups of cultural and other contexts; to create a sensitive and valued microclimate in curricular and extracurricular activities, to overcome their own stereotypes and prejudices and to enhance their cultural competences; to accept and value diversity and to work for its validation in the academic community and society. The presented aspects create an integrative basis for the formation in the social work students of positive attitudes towards people of different ethnic backgrounds and persons with disabilities.
