The Identification Strategies of the Bulgarians in Ukraine

Author(s): Svetlana Koch / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2019

This article analyses the process of choosing different strategies of identification by Bulgarians in Ukraine. The present state of ‘identification processes’ against the background of ‘war of memory’ and ‘invented traditions’ places them among the priority problems of science and politics. The subject of analysis is the specifics of the formation of collective memory, which is at the root of the choice of identification strategy: commemorative practices, mechanisms for the memorialization of the past, the correlation between the local history of the group and the national strategies of Bulgaria and Ukraine. The conclusion is that the choice of identification behaviour is influenced by the efficiency of social adaptation under specific historical circumstances. The social resources at the disposal of the group in any particular moment influence the choice of vectors of collective memory and predetermine the formation of defensive practices aimed at preserving the group.

‘Gezi Spirit’: Narrative Fragments and Modes of Articulation. Ethnography of Post-Protest (Istanbul 2013–2015)

Author(s): Zornitza Draganova / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2019

This text is based on an ethnographic study on the protests and civic initiatives that initially took place in 2013 but then continued with varying intensity throughout the following years. While applying the method of participant observation during the Gazi events’ and conducting interviews with individuals who had taken part in the protests, a main goal of this study is to grasp the transformation in the identification, articulation and presentation of important and secondary topics and problems that had been brought forward throughout the public discussions. The initial motivation of this study is the idea that after the first demonstrations and clashes, the interpretation of the political projects’ turbulence, of the reinvention of urban spaces, of the success or failure of diverse protest and resistance practices, gradually modifies the way the aforementioned events and ongoing processes are being thought and talked about. The research questions the respondents’ participation in protests, the constitution and disintegration of communities, the ‘diagnosis’, ‘prognosis’ and ‘rationale’ elements in respondents’ and informants’ micro-discourses and their acts in relation to diverse initiatives. The text attempts to systematize the observation data and the collected ‘narrative fragments’ within four ‘modes of articulation’: transformative, subjective, argumentative, and topological.

The act of translating is usually defined as transferring the meaning of a text from one language to another, taking care mainly of the functional relevant meaning. There is a formulation of basic requirements of a translation: making sense; conveying the spirit and manner of the original; having a natural and easy form of expression; producing a similar response. Translation is a matter of motivated choice. Omissions, additions and alterations may be justified but only in relation to intended meaning. The article represents the translation errors made by Polish students studying Bulgarian at Sofia University. Error analysis is an important procedure used by teachers in order to improve the communicative competence of the foreign students.

Gender and Existential Dimensions of Man in the Era of Globalization and Philosophical Education

Author(s): Nazip Khamitov,Svitlana Krylova / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2020

The article analyzes the gender and existential dimensions of man in the age of globalization and their reflection in philosophical education. Philosophical education aims to actualize criticality, creativity, humanism – a philosophical worldview that becomes a counteraction to any consciousness manipulation. It is proved that philosophical education in a democratic society is always a science – teaching and mastering philosophical knowledge is necessarily supplemented by philosophical creativity. The answer to the challenges of gender innovation and transhumanism is, above all, teaching and research in the field of philosophical anthropology, which becomes a meta-anthropology and promotes the concepts of gender partnership and androgynism.

Празниците ни са далеч повече! Междукултурно взаимодействие и празничност в бирелигиозни семейства

Author(s): Desislava Pileva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2020

The marital partners in mixed families engage in a form of cultural transition as a result of negotiating the differences between them. This leads to the development of a new cultural model which is influenced by or even combines both partners’heritages. An important aspect of this intercultural interaction is the festivities, more particularly the manner of their functioning, especially within bi-religious families. Hence, the festive events appear to form an essential and very visible part of each partner's own cultural heritage, which the couple more or less incorporate into their mixed family’s life. This article focuses on several ethnocultural (including religious), as well as social aspects of the festivities of couples composed by Bulgarians and foreigners of the Middle East and North African countries. The text considers the place of the festivities in the lifestyle of the partners and their children, as well as the agents’attitudes, personal motivations and involvement in certain activities.

Акултурация и идентичност на юноши имигранти. Анализ на случай от Франция

Акултурация и идентичност на юноши имигранти. Анализ на случай от Франция

Author(s): Aleksandra Kirova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2020

This paper draws on the author’s ethnographic research with 11 – 15 years old adolescents conducted in a “prioriy” middle school in Normandy, France (2014 – 2017) and aims to explore these immigrant students’ experiences of acculturation, sociocultural adaptation and identity formation. In particular, I present the case study of a Moroccan boy in an attempt to uncover more profound aspects of these phenomena. I use the theoretical framework of Berry et al. (2006) regarding strategies for acculturation and identity processes in adolescence in order to analyse data gathered through ethnographic methods. Then, I illustrate how methodological pluralism can produce a nuanced picture and allow for alternative interpretations. In addition, followingPollock and Van Reken’s example of a third-culture kid, I use the concept of a third culture adolescent (Pollock and Van Reken 1999) to demonstrate how a migrant student with a diffuse profile, that defines him as marginal and confused, viewed through an ethnographic lens, can be thought of as someone creating “third culture”.

В търсене на новите български културни герои в чужбина

Author(s): Kamen Rikev / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 6/2020

The paper discusses several major challenges for delivering messages, symbols and cultural heroes representing an attractive image of Bulgaria and Bulgarians abroad. It takes into consideration a divergence between current national promotion strategies and the opportunities in the foreign market. The author suggests that the role of new cultural heroes can be performed by former football players Hristo Stoichkov and Dimitar Berbatov, whose autobiographies have been released in 2018 with immediate plans for publication in Poland. Judging by their commercial success, “The Story” of Stoichkov and Berbatov’s “My Way” reveal an unexpected transformation of notable sportspersons into narrators. Questions, such as the nature of authorship and co-authorship, the linguistic, stylistic and narrative specifics in both books, lead to a typological comparison of the two athletes-turned-writers to previous manifestations of the Bulgarian cultural hero. According to the author, the most persuading argument for the acceptance of Stoichkov and Berbatov as contemporary cultural heroes is the model of the undisputed winner, revealed in their autobiographies. The two editions do not fit into the categories of high Bulgarian culture, however their translation abroad would open up new horizons in search of successful national symbols.

Cyberbezpieczeństwo sektora ochrony zdrowia. Przypadek Polski na tle tendencji światowych

Author(s): Julia Makuch,Mateusz Guziak / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2020

The subject of this article is an attempt to systematize the knowledge about the data breach phenomenon and its fluctuations in time. Medical data administration standards and the most common causes of their leakage were discussed. The literature on cybersecurity in the healthcare sector was analyzed. Cyberattacks are now more sophisticated and better financed, and their number is growing. One of the reasons is the increasing value of medical data on the black market. At the same time, in Poland, the awareness of threats is primarily low, resulting in a disrespectful approach to reporting incidents, insufficient qualifications of medical personnel in the field of cyber hygiene, and the non-transparency of the information policy of the services. In the face of the current COVID-19 pandemic and the increasingly faster digitisation of the medical industry, this problem may increase further. It is necessary to establish a dialogue between cybersecurity experts and specialists related to the medical industry.

Handel bronią konwencjonalną na Bliskim Wschodzie i jego wpływ na bezpieczeństwo w regionie

Author(s): Joanna Zych / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2020

The aim of this paper is to indicate current trends in the conventional arms trade in the Middle East and to determine its implications for regional security. The author attempts to answer the following questions: What are the trends in the legal arm imports and exports in the Middle East? What are the main problems related to arms trafficking in the region? How does the arms trade impact regional security in the Middle East? The participation of the Middle Eastern countries in global arms imports over the period 2015-2019 was analyzed as well as arms trafficking conducted by the states and non-state actors, including criminal organizations. The study was based on the analysis of relevant literature and sources as well as statistical methods, which allowed to determine the share of individual countries in the global and regional arms market. The quantitative analysis was based on the latest SIPRI reports, while the UNROCA register was used as an auxiliary source. The author assumes that the arms trade is multidimensional: it should not be deemed negative, provided that it is conducted transparently and in accordance with international law. On the other hand, the states’ unwillingness to put arms trade under international control, arming the parties of prolonged armed conflicts and arms trafficking by non-state actors, poses a threat to international security. The analyzed issue can be relevant for studies on current conflicts and instability in the Middle East, but also for studying their consequences for other parts of the world, particularly Europe.

Doktrynalne podstawy duńskiego zaangażowania w państwach Zatoki Gwinejskiej

Author(s): Grzegorz Rdzanek,Aleksandra Kusztal / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2020

The purpose of this article is to provide an analysis of the doctrinal rationale – doctrinal roots behind Denmark’s involvement in the security of the Gulf of Guinea region in West Africa. The subject of the considerations is, above all Denmark’s military support’s strategic goals to selected countries in the region. Taking into account the military potential of the Kingdom of Denmark and the possibility of projecting military force beyond the borders of Europe, Denmark’s active military involvement in West Africa should be considered a unique type of international use of armed forces in order to pursue the vital interests of the state, including security interests. In the article, the authors attempt to learn and discuss the formal factors that influence and motivate Denmark’s participation in bilateral and multilateral cooperation with the states of the Gulf of Guinea in the field of international security. The authors’ attention is focused primarily on the most important Danish documents that set the directions and nature of the state of Danish security policy, including the scope of the use of armed forces in relations with the outside world, from the beginning of the second decade of the 21st century. The authors use the qualitative analysis of sources and critical content analysis, mainly of Danish doctrine and strategy documents. The aim of the study is to find an answer to the question: What are the premises and interests that shape the foundations of Danish involvement in the Gulf of Guinea?

„Parias”, broń atomowa oraz amerykańska dyplomacja: nieudane rozmowy z Koreą Północną (2009–2019)

Author(s): Solomiya Kharchuk / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2020

The proliferation of nuclear weapons is one of the major challenges of the modern world. It is also a challenge for the United States of America, which focuses its counterproliferation efforts on its adversaries’ nuclear programmes. Washington has gone to great lengths to curb Pyongyang’s nuclear programme during the last decade, albeit without achieving the desired result - the complete denuclearisation of North Korea. The purpose of this article is to identify the reason for this failure and, specifically, why the negotiations with North Korea failed. Used in this research are the historical analysis and content analysis methods. Content analysis was conducted using official documents, speeches, and press statements, which proved to be a valuable resource. The research was conducted in the light of offensive realism, and confirmed that the lack of trust between parties, which derives from the anarchical international system, made the complete denuclearisation of North Korea impossible.

Rosyjska aktywność wojskowa w Arktyce w latach 2010–2018

Author(s): Krzysztof Kubiak / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2020

The activities of a few states in the Arctic taken in recent years attract the attention of the international opinion. We can observe arousing emotions, which achieves a particularly high level in relation to the issue of military presence in the High North. Military forces and various installations are currently maintained by five countries: Canada, the United States, Denmark, Norway, and Russia. The largest potential of the last of these countries, which also controls the longest part, almost half of the Arctic Sea coast. The article attempts to characterize the current level of Russian military activity in the Arctic. Attention was given first of all to the creating of the fifth Russian strategic territorial command on the basis of Northern Fleet Command and the restoration of military presence in the Arctic archipelagos, which were abandoned - primarily for financial reasons - after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Apart from the description, the author attempts to build a forecast regarding the further development of military architecture on the “top of the globe”. At the same time, because a coherent picture of the role of the Arctic in theory and the military practice of the Soviet Union during the Cold War era is outlined in other publications, this text presents the actions taken in the Russian Federation to strengthen the position of the state in the north after the period of "Jelcin's Smell" (1991-1999).
