Summary/Abstract: The eleven texts included in the Ideological and Political Conditions of Language Communication address communication in its ideological and political aspect. The relations between politics and ideology, which arouse strong emotions in public discourse, are not the keynote of the presented publication. The authors choose one of the two notions and focus their research on the phenomena defined as political behaviour, language policy, politolinguistics, major political ideologies, political discourse. Aside from the defined visions of the world as well as political doctrines and programmes, which reflect beliefs, the book focuses on values and valuation, i.e. moral values and language value. The linguists base their research on Polish, German, English, French and Italian language material, drawing from the present and history. Due to interdisciplinary character of the presented reflections, the volume has been divided into five parts, devoted to historical, terminological, pragmatic, translational and didactic matters.

- Summary/Abstract:The article is devoted to an analysis of the former meanings of the notions: politics, politician and politic(al), in Polish and German. The occurrence of these notions has been attested in both languages since the 17th century. Their earlier meanings are not the same as the modern ones, which is particularly important for a proper understanding of their use in texts from the 17th -19th centuries. Using the example of two works by the 17th-century author Maciej Gutthäter-Dobracki, as well as lexicographic writings, the article discusses differences in contemporary and former definitions of the concepts under analysis.

- Summary/Abstract:The present article analyses the metalanguage commentaries of the Habsburg officials establishing the German language as the language of instruction in Galician schools while introducing the Act of Law “Allgemeine Schulordnung” after the year 1774. Their communications show similarities to the language narration which appeared in the intra-German dispute about the so-called “Sprachverbesserung” (language improvement). The issues that were raised in the German countries in the 18th century during the discourse promoting the value of the native language relative to its emancipation from Latin and French in science and education, and in relation to the regional competition for the “proper German”, assumed expansive forms within the range that was adapted in order to present the means for the language policy in Galician schools.

- Summary/Abstract:The present article deals with the contentious term Central Europe and, in particular, the connotations it carries in the German press. Selected articles from the weekly magazine "Der Spiegel" and the daily "Die Welt" were used as research material. In the theoretical part, an attempt was made to define the concept of Central Europe and to identify the main characteristics of Central Europe and its constituent countries. The empirical part of the article presents examples of using the term Mitteleuropa (i.e. Central Europe) from the German press. In the context of the considerations, special attention was paid to the context of the use of the term Mitteleuropa, as well as to the countries to which it refers in a particular example. The article ends with some final conclusions based on the examples.

- Summary/Abstract:The subject matter is represented by moral concepts expressed in the communications of Józef Tischner in the televised cycle “Tischner czyta Katechizm”. The aim is to present the concepts of Józef Tischner comprising his ethical thought, viewed by him as different from the systems of religions and ideologies. Research strategy is dominated by qualitative methods (analysing archival films). Search formulae are based on the links of qualification (inclusion) and implication (conditional promotion of concepts). Their use has enabled determination of the place of each ethical concept (marked in the communications taken into account) in the system of moral values considered by Józef Tischner.

- Summary/Abstract:Th is paper analyzes selected approaches to political linguistics and attempts to define its subject-matter, conceived of either as a variety of language or as social discursive practices. Th e diversity of genres and styles of utterances regarded as belonging to broadly understood political communication means that, even when it is defined as a discipline that studies the language of politics, political linguistics in fact deals with the use of linguistic forms in political discourses. Given the above, no models of knowledge implemented in the social interactions under consideration show enough system-like features to be treated as a language in the Saussurean tradition.

- Summary/Abstract:The article above focuses on the manipulation strategies in marketing contents concerning the compromising history of architectural objects. It is a case study on the narration of CBF company, owning the former headquarters of PZPR (Polish United Workers’ Army). Presented strategies, such as replacing shameful information about the object’s history with less important, rather anecdotic facts, omitting the former nomenclature or creating the concept of the “new identity” of the place, are nevertheless universal and hundreds of similar examples can be found in many post-authoritarian countries. In order to emphasize the specific features of developer discourse, the article compares three informative and three commercial sources.

- Summary/Abstract:The chapter attempts to describe metaphors of health and disease applied in fascist and communist ideologies. There is no doubt that the notion of disease as the source domain serves to stigmatize the enemy and justify radical solutions aimed at their physical elimination. Conceptualizations of disease as a method of exclusion and elimination of opponents, and as the loss of control by society, are presented on the basis of ideological speeches, press articles and literary texts.

- Summary/Abstract:The paper is devoted to the relationship between ideology and translation. After discussing approaches to ideology and discourse within CDA, and signalling the main area of research on ideology and translation (lexico-grammatical choices), the article goes on to propose extending the search for ideological effects and underpinnings of the discourse of translations to editorial cuts, as well as to erroneous interpretations of the source text. Those issues are illustrated by Polish translations of English writings on the economic aspects of globalization. An important point made in the paper is that ideology may affect translators (and/or editors) in ways they not necessarily aware of.

- Summary/Abstract:The paper provides a look into ideological elements of communication in case of history writing about the battle of Vienna (1683) in Polish and Austrian history textbooks. The precise definition of ideology and methodological guidelines and procedures for its analysis by Jef Verschueren introduced in the first part, lead to the analysis of selected fragments in terms of time, space, involved people and direct context of the historical event, which allows the conclusion showing national perspective on the said event.
