Poľsko-uhorské súvislosti v dejinách uniatov

Poľsko-uhorské súvislosti v dejinách uniatov

Author(s): Peter Zubko / Language(s): Slovak Issue: 03+04/2018

This article compares the union between the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church in Poland and Hungary. The Union closed in Brest city, Poland (1596), influenced the closure of the Union in the Uzhhorod city, Hungary (1646). The mutual comparison of the two unions shows a great deal of differences in the genesis of the unions and in their further development. The Polish Union has all the attributes of a classic Church Union, the Hungarian Union from 1646 has the attributes of a simple personal union. The Polish Union was guaranteed by the Church hierarchy, the king and the pope; the Hungarian Union had a private character between several Presbyters and the Bishop of the Latin Rite of Eger. In the case of Hungary, this was not a one-off event, but the process that was repeated in some years. A further comparison of both environments shows that, in Poland, latinization and polonization developed largely in the wake of the Union. In Hungary, this process took place much later, after the establishment of the Mukacheve Greek Catholic Bishopric (1771). Until then, the Union was inspired by cultural events from the Polish unites believers and Church to cope with the Latin clergy.

Since the Middle Age, the icons of Eastern Slovakia have often contained the elements of Western art that have undergone transformation and adaptation following the needs of the Byzantine-Slavic liturgical ceremony. Graphics and painting of the Renaissance and Baroque periods enriched not only the ornamentation, but also the iconography of many icons and wall paintings of the churches in Eastern Slovakia as an integral part of post-Byzantine art.

Author(s): Imola Orsolya Kerékgyártó / Language(s): Hungarian Issue: 6/2022

In this paper I summarise the ecclesiastical and social effects of the works on the life of the church and society of the Lutheran theologian (pastor and dean in Kolozsvár-Cluj) Andor Járosi, who was born 125 years ago. It is the result of his efforts that the liturgical reform of the Lutheran church from Transylvania took place, even if it lasted longer than twenty years until a general decision was made regarding of its implementation to the whole church.

After the Treaty of Trianon, the Transylvanian Reformed Church found itself in a completely new and unprecedented situation. In the years following the change of empires, there was an ideological search not only in literature and public life but also within the church. The intellectual elites of Hungarian Transylvania, including the leaders, theological professors, and ministers of the Reformed Church, significantly contributed to this quest, with their reflections and thoughts still holding significant content and influence today. The aim of this study was to explore the publications that appeared between 1920 and 1944, placing them within a framework of intellectual and church history, and presenting them chronologically to depict the national worldview of the contemporary Reformed intellectuals. At the beginning of the study, we examined the concepts of Transylvanism and public service. Subsequently, we delved into the intellectual search of the 1920s and discussed the national existential issues and ideas based on the writings of the 1930s. Finally, we explored the emerging novel national worldview after 1940.

In the context of the historic Mukachevo Eparchy, there was a tradition of translation of the biblical text, which was read during Sunday and feast day liturgies. This is evidenced by the numerous manuscript books, known as didactical Gospels, which were produced and used in the Eastern Rite Church environment in the studied area. In this paper we are comparing the translations of the Gospel pericopes with the Church Slavonic text.

O franciszkańskiej historii koszalińskich kościołów w latach 1945–1974

O franciszkańskiej historii koszalińskich kościołów w latach 1945–1974

Author(s): Krystyna Bastowska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 12/2024

At the beginning of 1945, there were 10 temples belonging to various denominations in Koszalin, including one Catholic church. Saint Joseph. All temples survived the war conflagration. The first Franciscan, Father Nikodem Szałankiewicz, arrived in ruined Koszalin on May 26, 1945, together with a group of 450 settlers from Gniezno, occupying the church dedicated to the Saint Joseph without any obstacles, and from June 17, 1945 also the parish church. Parish of St. Joseph initially included over 20 branch churches. In 1946, the parish of St. Joseph was handed over to Lutherhaus. All efforts to acquire the castle church and other churches in Koszalin and the Koszalin district were rejected by the state authorities. In addition to building religious life and pastoral service from scratch, the Franciscans had been renovating and taking care of historic churches and their furnishings for nearly 30 years, without being able to obtain financial assistance and struggling with many difficulties from the authorities. The wide-ranging and innovative work carried out at the parish church was a response to the needs of the time and an image of the emerging conservation doctrines. Passing on to future generations the historic legacy in the form of 10 former Catholic churches and 78 Protestant congregations from the city of Koszalin and the Koszalin district is an unquestionable merit and achievement, achieved in times that were unfavorable and unfavorable to religious monuments. After the Koszalin-Kolobrzeg (Kołobrzeg) Diocese was established on June 28, 1978, the Koszalin parish church became an episcopal cathedral. On July 2, 1974, the Franciscans handed over the cathedral to the diocesan priests and on July 3, 1974, they began serving in the church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, which they expanded in the years 1976–1983 and where they serve to this day.

Primele investigații dendrocronologice extinse la bisericile de lemn din Sălaj (2018-2023)

Author(s): Bogdan Ilieș,Boglárka Tóth,Patrick Chiroiu / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 1/2023

This paper presents the results of extensive dendrochronological investigations applied to an initial group of ten wooden churches in Sălaj County (Map 1), north-western Romania. The dendrochronological analysis of historical structures was first used in Romania as a method for gaining in-depth understanding prior to the year 2000. Decisive steps were taken back then, notably through the research of architect Alexandru Baboș in Maramureș (conducted during his doctoral studies in Lund). Moreover, in the last two decades, under the influence and experience of projects from abroad, this type of study has increasingly been applied to historical monuments in general. A few researchers in Miercurea Ciuc, Suceava or Timișoara have begun to work intensively on developing and validating increasingly rich and specialized databases focused on historical provinces and wood species. However, out of the estimated 1,400 historical wooden churches believed to exist in Romania, fewer than 100 have benefited from this scientific method. These are primarily concentrated in Transylvania, Maramureș, Crișana, and Banat, while in the rest of the country, analyses remain sporadic. Furthermore, the results of the investigations are not nationally centralized (initiatives being rather private and NGO-based), and researchers (very few in number) do not manage to publish them systematically. Therefore, one of the objectives of this paper is to make public the dendrochronological results obtained in one of the country's counties, Sălaj, between 2018-2023. Another objective is more specific, targeting precise corrections and confirmations related to the age and construction stages of the wooden churches in Sălaj, in order to create exact chronological benchmarks, grounded in science, to support future comparative analyses and studies, but also to correct the List of Historical Monuments in Romania or promote these monuments in hope to ensure their preservation. The old and new datings for foundations and repairs or renovations from the 17th to 20th centuries are shown side by side in Fig. 10, highlighting the value and necessity of the methods of collecting scientific data, in cases where existing bibliography is strongly impregnated with myths and centuries-old information, insufficiently verified or impossible to verify otherwise. The study also reflects the fact that, in the years 1750-1770, there was an impressive constructive surge in Sălaj, characterized by the erection of new churches or modifications to the existing ones. If this mid-18th century constructive effervescence is confirmed, the phenomenon inquires further investigation within broader historical, social, and confessional context. Additionally, to precise information for the history of religious buildings, the study also provides a series of historical evidence about the craft of carving and wood usage in the architecture of Romanian communities in the area over four centuries. This paper marks the first stage of valuing the chronological data from Sălaj, a second group of 21 churches in the same area being planned for research during this year (2023).

Kegyelem vagy természet? A Barth–Brunner-vita egy lehetséges megközelítése

Kegyelem vagy természet? A Barth–Brunner-vita egy lehetséges megközelítése

Author(s): István Bacsó / Language(s): Hungarian Issue: 5/2023

The Barth–Brunner debate is one of the most significant moments of the Protestant theological history in the 20th century. The replica-exchange of the two outstanding figures of dialectical theology in 1934 not only includes the theological centres of gravity of Karl Barth and Emil Brunner, but also gives insight into the sparkling theological and spiritual atmosphere of the 1930s. Brunner’s interpretation reveals a specific version of natural theology, while Barth, in the spirit of New Reformation Theology, expresses his position in terms of the authority of the Word. In this essay we explore the content of some points of the debate, but we also briefly reconstruct the circumstances of its origin, as well as we mention its history and evaluation in Transylvania.

Az érkeserűi úrasztali kehely nyomában

Author(s): László Fodor / Language(s): Hungarian Issue: 5/2023

The communion cup of the Reformed parish of Érkeserű was originally a plate, which was melted down at the beginning of the 19th century and made into a chalice. Its history, which can be traced back to the last third of the 16th century, is closely linked to the history of the parish and the local landowning families, especially the Suselith-Horváth family. This study corrects and supplements earlier literature by using archival sources and source publications. It shows who were the original owners of the silver chalice, how it came to the later donor and the social background of the donation. It describes the relationship of the family members concerned to the Reformed Church.

GARĪGĀ PRETOŠANĀS UN TĀS PIEMĒRI LATVIJAS ROMAS KATOĻU BAZNĪCĀ PADOMJU LAIKĀ

Author(s): Solveiga Krūmiņa-Koņkova / Language(s): Latvian Issue: 1/2024

The article aims to clarify the concept of “spiritual resistance” by drawing on the theological ideas of Henri de Lubac and Dietrich Bonhoeffer. It seeks to establish a comprehensive framework for understanding spiritual resistance and to assess its applicability in examining cases of resistance within the history of the Latvian Roman Catholic Church during the Soviet era. This article examines the spiritual resistance to the Soviet regime within the Latvian Roman Catholic Church. It focuses on how clergy and laity made individual choices to preserve their religious tradition, theological ideas, and practices in the face of Soviet totalitarianism. Despite the forced coexistence with the Soviet regime and the Church’s institutional conformism, the courage and enduring faith of the clergy and laity allowed them to maintain their religious tradition. The cases discussed in the article illustrate various ways individuals and communities attempted to preserve their spiritual integrity amid systemic repression. They also demonstrate how personal expressions of faith intersected with the collective endeavours of the Church as a community of believers to uphold spiritual practices, beliefs, and institutions clandestinely. Therefore, examining these cases unveils spiritual resistance’s multifaceted, complex, and sometimes conflicting nature. The article suggests that we could better understand cases of spiritual resistance in the Latvian Roman Catholic Church by considering the social theory of French sociologist and anthropologist Pierre Bourdieu in addition to theological aspects from de Lubac and Bonhoeffer. By incorporating Bourdieu’s perspectives on power, cultural capital, habitus, and fields, we can gain deeper insight into the social dynamics and power structures opposed by Lubac and Bonhoeffer. Bourdieu’s concept of symbolic violence can provide a more comprehensive understanding of the religious field. The actions of de Lubac, Bonhoeffer, and the Latvian Roman Catholic Church can be seen as attempts to challenge the symbolic violence imposed by the Nazi and Soviet occupation regimes, creating new forms of cultural and social capital to resist the imposed structures. From this perspective, Bourdieu’s theory aids in understanding spiritual resistance not just as an individual act of defiance and disobedience but as a multifaceted and crucial social phenomenon that can profoundly impact and alter the values and behavioural dynamics within a totalitarian regime.

Hetvenöt éves a Kolozsvári Protestáns Teológiai Intézet

Hetvenöt éves a Kolozsvári Protestáns Teológiai Intézet

1948-ban a Román Népköztársaság egyházai valóban korszakhatárhoz érkeztek. Ezt minden egyház és felekezet érzékelte. A szovjet mintát követő kommunista és ateista új világrend teljes mértékben átrendezte a négy évszázados protestáns iskolarendszert és a lelkészképzést is. 1948. augusztus 3-án a 175. számú dekrétum kimondta, hogy a közoktatás megszervezése kizárólag az állam hatáskörébe tartozik. A 176. számú dekrétum államosította a felekezeti iskolákat. Augusztus 4-én a 177. számú törvény rendelkezett a felekezetek lelkészképzéséről.

Author(s): Lela Khachidze / Language(s): Georgian Issue: 8/2024

George the Athonite's contribution to the Georgian Church and Georgian culture is mainly represented by numerous collections translated and edited by him. In these collections, along with Greek-language works translated by him, rarely, only in exceptional cases, he included hymns written by Georgian authors. This work considers George the Athonite's original hymns which are dedicated to "Iodasaph the King of Indians". This is an entire hymnographic cycle – three hymns of small size and hymnographic canon. These hymns stand out for their artistic perfection and theological depth, as well as rare rhythmicity, which is also characteristic of George the Athonite's translations. These hymns often contain various testimonies from the Old and New Testaments, as well as evangelistic teachings discussed in the paper. The hirmi of George the Athonite's hymnographic canon devoted to Iodasaph the Indian are included in the so-called "Irmologion with Neumes". In this collection, these hirmi are denoted by the term “utskhoni (“aliens”). In these hymns George the Athonite compares Iodasaph the Indian to John the Baptist, the prophets David and Elijah. The fact that in these hymns Iodasaph the Indian is compared to the apostles deserves special attention. He is considered to have joined the "apostolic community". Saint Paul is recognized as the thirteenth Apostle in church tradition. In this hymn, "Iodasaph the King of Indians" is mentioned with the same honour. In the hymns dedicated to Iodasaph the Indian his "confessor", "divine man" - Balavari (Barlaam) is also glorified. George the Athonite's hymns are also important for the study of the text and origin of Byzantine “Story of Barlaam and Ioasaph", which has long been the subject of great interest of researchers of different generations.

Bricks from three masonry objects of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL) are compared. Two of them represent Vilnius, its early Cathedral and the Lower Castle, the third one – the defensive fortifications of the Lutsk Castle in Ukraine. The beginning of their construction is probably separated by the period of 65–135 years. Each object is characterized by five bricks. In each of them, the contents of 15 analytes – Al, Ba, Ca, Fe, Ga, K, Mg, Nb, P, Rb, Si, Sr, Th, Ti, and Zr are determined using energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence. The aim of their analysis is comparison of geochemical composition of clay mixtures used for production of masonry bricks in order to estimate the links and differences of production technologies. For this, various mathematical statistical methods were used including cluster analysis which enabled to find out not only typical bricks, but also outliers of masonry objects. The links between mineralogical and geochemical data and their informative potential are discussed in detail. The contents of Al, Ca, Mg and Si in Vilnius bricks and the values of their ratios (Si/Al, Ca/Al, (Ca,Mg)/Al) are compared with the corresponding values in 70 samples from 17 adjacent clay layers of deposits. It is hypothesized that in the period of the second half of the 13th century – 14th century, the bricklayers in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania developed their techniques by changing the clay mixture recipes. Starting with lower in calcium clays, they became proficient in using Ca (Mg, Sr) rich clays as well, which enabled the acceptability of most clays in the surroundings. Poorer Ca (Sr, Mg) clays were used for the Cathedral, and richer clays for the production of bricks for Vilnius and Lutsk castles. Lower in Ca and Sr contents clays were used for the Cathedral, and higher in these analytes clays for the production of bricks for Vilnius and Lutsk castles.

The Church of the Mother of God of Kldeisi located in the historical area of Kvemo Kartli is one of the excellent examples of Georgian architecture. In 2019-2021, the ruined church was restored with the financial support of the "Kartu" Foundation and under the organization of the National Agency for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Georgia, according with unknown lapidary inscriptions were discovered. The unknown inscriptions of Kldeisi enrich our knowledge not only in terms of the Church of the Mother of God in Kldeisi, but also provide us with the most valuable information about the Liparit V Baguashi's (Eristavt Eristavi of Trialeti) construction activities in the late 80s and first half of the 90s of the 11th century, during the reign of David IV the builder (1089-1125), the king of united Georgia. The inscriptions provide unknown episodes about his battle against the Seljuk Turks and his possession of the title of King of Aran. In Georgian epigraphy, one of the still unknown inscriptions of the Church of the Mother of God of Kldeisi (AD.1092-1094/1095 the inscription of Liparit V Baguashi Eristavt Eristavi of Trialeti and King of Aran,) has so far been presented as the only written monument where the term "Turks" is mentioned. This is another unknown passage in the military-political relations between Georgia and the Seljuk Empire.
