František Sequens: Decoration of the Churches of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Prague-Karlín and Saint Wenceslas in Prague-Smíchov

František Sequens: Decoration of the Churches of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Prague-Karlín and Saint Wenceslas in Prague-Smíchov

Author(s): Adéla Klinerová / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2017

The objective of this article is to present the personality of Czech painter František Sequens (1836 – 1896), representative of Prague Academy and artist focused on religious art. Sequens had an opportunity to spend a great part of the 1860s in Rome. This period of his life and formation is considered nowadays determining. The issue of the continuity with the Nazarene art movement is therefore obvious but not that easy to be resolved. The contribution is pointing out the often simplified attribution of religious art of the pursued period to the Nazarene art movement. Two important commissions were chosen from the whole of Sequens’s work: inner decoration of the Churches of Ss. Cyril and Methodius in Prague Karlín and St. Wenceslas in Prague-Smíchov. The article is then focused on the monumental mural paintings in the context of these two religious buildings.

Slovenskí gréckokatolíci v Kanade. Najstaršie písomné záznamy o farnosti sv. Petra a Pavla v Lethbridge, Alberta

Author(s): Daniel Černý / Language(s): Slovak Issue: 02/2015

The presented article focuses on the copy of a manuscript book of the meeting minutes of the parish board of the parish of Sts. Peter and Paul in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. This was the first Slovak Greek Catholic parish on the Canadian soil. The article briefly narrates the history of the Slovak settlement in Lethbridge before the creation of the parish and continues with the years depicted on the pages of the book. Interesting is the fact that the Slovak immigration to Lethbridge had its origin among the Slovaks, who already settled in the USA. Using the quotations from the copy of the manuscript book we are able to trace the efforts and life of this Slovak Greek Catholic community from the very start till the outbreak of the WWII. The article continues with the history of the parish till the creation of the Slovak Eparchy in 1980, when the parish was not any longer considered to be Slovak.

Latinsko-cirkevnoslovanské vzťahy v priestore historickej Mukačevskej eparchie

Author(s): Mária Strýčková / Language(s): Slovak Issue: 03+04/2018

Transcarpathian region is a border area with various nationalities, languages, religions and cultures. One of its interesting phenomena is not only the relationship between two liturgical, or liturgical and confessional traditions, but above all the relationship between the liturgical languages of Latin and Byzantine-Slavic tradition. Therefore we will in our article focus on the relationship between the above-mentioned languages, which were used not only as liturgical, but also as literary and administrative-juridical languages. These languages integrated the confessional diversity of the national community and played a significant role in the self-identifying of the faithful of Latin and Byzantine-Slavic tradition and culture under the Carpathians. These relationships can be well seen in the writings, written in one of these languages, or in those texts, which were translated into them, as well as in the texts with parallel - bilingual Latin and Church Slavonic texts. The purpose of such texts will be elaborated and explained on the example of the liturgical terminology in a liturgical commentary, written by Juraj Joannikij Bazilovič in 1815.

Trust in the Church Hierarchy among the Underground Church Community in Post-1968 Slovakia

Trust in the Church Hierarchy among the Underground Church Community in Post-1968 Slovakia

Author(s): Agáta Šústová Drelová / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2021

In the post-1968 era, trust in the official hierarchy among the catholic faithful was far from guaranteed. With the church hierarchy under tight state control and effectively existing on two levels-officially and “underground”-the levels of trust fluctuated and its character changed. Trust was constructed, challenged and negotiated. Drawing on an analysis of the catholic discourse in late socialism, I argue that the character and level of trust in the local catholic hierarchy changed dynamically according to the current hierarchy’s relationship to the communist party-state, the hierarchy’s relationship with the Vatican and the level and quality of the hierarchy´s relationship with the underground community itself.

Nebeský Jeruzalem - Šalamúnov chrám - kostol : sakralizácia kresťanskej architektúry (niekoľko téz k veľkej téme)

Nebeský Jeruzalem - Šalamúnov chrám - kostol : sakralizácia kresťanskej architektúry (niekoľko téz k veľkej téme)

Author(s): Bibiana Pomíyová / Language(s): Slovak Issue: 2/2021

The study draws attention to the issue of the sacralization of Christian architecture. This topic – essential for research into ecclesiastical architecture – is analysed from several viewpoints. The chief questions asked are: What process was followed for the sacralization of buildings which served Christians for gatherings and worship? How far back is it possible to speak about Christian sacred architecture? These questions naturally lead back to the very beginnings of Christianity and Christian architecture. Great attention is dedicated to the special liturgy of consecrating churches as a ritual means for the sacralization of a specific place and building. Ultimately, the final section focuses on an analysis of the thesis according to which, in the Middle Ages, wooden churches in our territory could not be consecrated, only blessed, with the consequence that they supposedly could not serve as parish churches.

Local and Supra-regional Significance of Romanesque Sculpture and its Place in Art History – the Example of Bas-reliefs from a Church in Inowrocław

Local and Supra-regional Significance of Romanesque Sculpture and its Place in Art History – the Example of Bas-reliefs from a Church in Inowrocław

Author(s): Przemysław Waszak / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2021

This paper addresses the issue of Romanesque sculpture and presents it by means of describing the ensemble of masks preserved in the Romanesque, partially reconstructed, church dedicated to the Name of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a symbol of Inowrocław. This text addresses the well-known sculptures analysed from a contemporary research and methodological perspective in respect of the history of medieval art. Artistic analogies, aesthetic sources, and the practice of ornamenting the Houses of God with stone masks have been presented and new interpretations of iconography, form, and meaning have been discussed. Issues concerning artistic geography, style, significance, law of the frame and technique have been considered and compared.

A Tale of Two Churches: Court and Parish Projects at St. Stephen’s in Vienna

A Tale of Two Churches: Court and Parish Projects at St. Stephen’s in Vienna

Author(s): Tim Juckes / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2020

The article explores St. Stephen’s in Vienna as an ensemble of visual media that responded to the devotional and commemorative needs of its late medieval congregants. A holistic approach to aspects of the church’s architecture and integral sculpture is used to refine the prevailing view of the church as an emblem of Habsburg patronage. On the basis of the wide-ranging plan changes that were adopted in the period after Rudolf IV’s death, it is argued that the parish’s patrician elite came to play a pivotal role in shaping one of Central Europe’s most important city churches.

The Single Gothic Towers of the Two Franciscan Churches of Bratislava and Sopron and Their Possible Connections to Vienna

The Single Gothic Towers of the Two Franciscan Churches of Bratislava and Sopron and Their Possible Connections to Vienna

Author(s): Zoltán Bereczki / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2020

The medieval Franciscan monasteries of Bratislava (Slovakia) and Sopron (Hungary) are important representants of the Gothic architecture of the former Hungarian Kingdom. An extensive research executed between 2013 and 2017 has proven that the construction of their towers was closely related to the workshop of the Stephanskirche, Vienna; and that they are important milestones in the evolution of the Gothic spires, with significantly earlier construction date as it is widely accepted in the literature. This article is based on the corresponding parts of the author’s PhD thesis defended in 2017.

Der Chor von St. Moritz in Olmütz (Olomouc) im Spannungsfeld architekturgeschichtlicher Erfindungen des mitteleuropäischen Spätmittelaltelters. Alte Beobachtungen und neue Erkenntnisse

Author(s): Sophie Morawitz / Language(s): German Issue: 2/2020

The reconstruction of St Maurice in Olomouc was one of the most important building projects in late medieval Moravia. Research assumes that the work began in 1415 and continued, with several interruptions, into the late 15th century. This paper wants to critically examine the dating of the choir as eastern part of the parish church parish church between 1453 and 1483/1492. It approaches the building enterprise with a detailed analysis of the stylistic, typological and archaeological findings and highlights the dynamics behind the outlined designs. Especially the ambitious and, for this region, unusual designs share far-reaching artistic connections with important centers such as Wrocław, Brno and Vienna. Therefore, this paper proposes that the project`s exceptional value is imbedded in Central Europe’s architectural history.

„Slovenský kňaz v nutnej opozícii voči cudzorodej hierarchii“. Konflikt kňaza Karola Antona Medveckého s biskupom Wolfgangom Radnaim v druhej dekáde 20. storočia

Author(s): Ján Golian / Language(s): Slovak Issue: 1/2023

The aim of the study is to analyse the development of disputes between the priest Karol Anton Medvecký and Bishop Wolfgang Radnai in the second decade of the 20th century. The conflict, which took place in the territory of the Banská Bystrica diocese, depicts rivalry relationships between politically active Slovak priests and the Hungarian episcopate – integrally connected with the official Hungarian political discourse. It began when the bishop relocated the priest into the complicated parish of Bacurov, where Medvecký had to face geographical, economic, mental and cultural isolation. After many years of ignoring his requests for relocation, the priest raised complaints against the bishop to the nunciature in Vienna and subsequently to the Council of the Congregation in Rome.

Odkrywanie misji Kościoła w dziełach Thomasa Mertona

Odkrywanie misji Kościoła w dziełach Thomasa Mertona

Author(s): Wojciech Oleśków / Language(s): Polish Issue: 34/2024

According to Merton, the mission of the Church is to spread the Gospel. Christians discover this mission dynamism through their bond with God. They perceive life’s novelty, which manifests itself in transforming the Christians and people under their charge. What God endows them with is the wisdom to understand His word and to pass it further. Spreading the Gospel happens along with encountering other people and staying close to them. The mission means being open to others, willingness to understand their problems and sources of joy. Christians perceive it as answering Jesus’ call. They are devoted to spread the Gospel. They recognize how and in what way to convey it. The mission is based on God. One can see unity between preaching and contemplating. Prayer is the source of preaching and any commitment. In silence Christians discover God, Who is love. They learn to convey it to others. They strive to share love with others that are in need, poverty and difficulty. An example of the mission discovered by Merton is the apostolate of friendship, which becomes supportive for writers and poets fighting for freedom and truth. The correspondence between Merton and Miłosz shows how one can spread the Gospel, at the same time caring about understanding and getting to know another person.

Nové prameny k chrámové hudbě v Hrabyni: mecenáši a hudebně-liturgický provoz slezského poutního místa

Nové prameny k chrámové hudbě v Hrabyni: mecenáši a hudebně-liturgický provoz slezského poutního místa

Author(s): Helena Stella Kramářová / Language(s): Czech Issue: 1/2022

The study focuses on newly found sources documenting the financing of the liturgical and musical practice of the Silesian pilgrimage church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Hrabyně. It focuses on the heyday of Hrabyně in the 18th century, when the estate belonged to the Mitrovsky family, as well as on the establishment of foundations and the role of patrons. Financial donations and foundations not only ensured the activities of the chaplain and teacher, but also enabled the purchase of new musical instruments and the construction of an organ. No less important was the introduction of Marian devotions in front of the image of Our Lady of Hrabyně, during which the Salve Regina was sung at the donor’s request by six boys in the Czech language accompanied by the organ. The paper aims to highlight one of the aspects connected with the musical-liturgical practice of the pilgrimage site and thus lay a foundation for further research on the musical events of Silesian and Moravian pilgrimage sites.

A tanító igehirdetés időszerűsége

A tanító igehirdetés időszerűsége

Author(s): József Székely / Language(s): Hungarian Issue: 1/2024

In the last three decades, Transylvanian society and church members have experienced a shift toward secularisation, particularly within the Reformed Church. This trend has made it difficult to engage with younger congregants drifting from organized religion. Despite this, there’s a vital need to re-emphasise Christian teachings, especially considering the current state of the Hungarian Reformed Church in Transylvania, where many lack a deep understanding of biblical and Reformed doctrines. Christian education should be more than just imparting knowledge; it’s about fostering spiritual growth. Ministers, alongside church elders and congregations, should actively teach Christian values, ensuring members develop a strong, knowledgeable faith. Ultimately, faith is more than learning; it’s about a personal connection with God. By focusing on education in preaching and investing in educational initiatives, the Church can nurture a generation of well-informed, devout believers.

„Szocialistává kell hogy legyen a jó keresztyén ember?” Karl Barth és a szocializmus

„Szocialistává kell hogy legyen a jó keresztyén ember?” Karl Barth és a szocializmus

Author(s): Tamás Juhász / Language(s): Hungarian Issue: 1/2024

In this article, the author deals with a “shadow side” of the life and work of Karl Barth. From the perspective of many Eastern and Central European people who have experienced “real” socialism, the right to ask the question posed in the title is evident. It examines under what influences Karl Barth’s inclination towards social democracy and socialism arose. Three circumstances are mentioned: 1. The traditional Swiss solidarity and social sensitivity for the cause of the weak and oppressed. Karl Barth received this sensitivity, so to speak, in his parents’ house. 2. The three theologians of “religious socialism” (Christoph Blumhardt, Hermann Kutter, and Leonhard Ragaz) had a great influence on Barth. 3. It is described in more detail how Barth’s attitude towards socialism was kindled, so to speak, as a counter-reaction to the ”raging” anti-communism in Switzerland (but generally throughout Western Europe and North America). In this context, the problem of ”Barth’s silence on the Hungarian Uprising of 1956” is also addressed. In the final chapter, the author attempts to theologically justify Barth’s attitude towards socialism based on some quotes from the section ”The Active Life” (Das tätige Leben; KD III/4).

A kolozsvári református kollégiumi tanítók szabályzata 1786-ból

Author(s): Vilmos József Kolumbán / Language(s): Hungarian Issue: 1/2024

The text above is the Regulations of the Reformed College Teachers drawn up in 1786 by the board of the College of Kolozsvár (Cluj). The 1780s heralded the era of educational reform, marked by the Habsburg Empire’s ruler mandating a centralisation of the educational system. In response, the Reformed Church of Transylvania embarked on an extensive overhaul of its collegiate structure and public education. These regulations were distinctive, echoing the spiritual heritage bequeathed by nobility and monarchs. Notably, they were exclusively designed for the youth of noble lineage, which likely led to their limited application.

Százéves az unitárius énekeskönyv

Százéves az unitárius énekeskönyv

Author(s): Sándor Kovács / Language(s): Hungarian Issue: 1/2024

Through an exploration of the editions of the hymnal published in 1924 by Márton Pálffi, this study provides insight into the reverence for tradition surrounding the hymnal, as well as the arduous but unsuccessful efforts made by those aiming to rejuvenate it. Politics often encroached upon the life of the Church, evident in the evolution of the hymnal. The changes of political power and country borders, as well as the imposition of communist censorship, have also significantly influenced the Unitarian hymnal. Despite all efforts, errors persisted in editions published post-1989. This research endeavours to trace these changes across a century of history.

A FEW THINGS THE CHURCH BUILDING INDUSTRY TELLS US ABOUT CONTEMPORARY ROMANIA

A FEW THINGS THE CHURCH BUILDING INDUSTRY TELLS US ABOUT CONTEMPORARY ROMANIA

Author(s): Giuseppe Tateo / Language(s): English Issue: 22/2025

Based on a central survey published by the SSRA in 2016, this article reflects on the construction of religious infrastructure in Romania after 1990. Two aspects are given special attention: the nationalist orientation of the Romanian Orthodox Church (ROC), which seems to replace spiritual and theological symbolism, and the relevant role of state authorities in providing favorable legal measures and generous public funding to religious groups. In this light, I look skeptically at the paradigm of religious revival and propose alternative avenues of research: the organizational revival of the ROC, the de-secularization of property, and the privatization of faith among younger generations.

Administration of Sacraments in casu necessitatis by Nurses in Croatia — A Few Qualitative Examples from Clinical Practice

Administration of Sacraments in casu necessitatis by Nurses in Croatia — A Few Qualitative Examples from Clinical Practice

Author(s): Damjan Abou Aldan / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

Modern healthcare requires a holistic approach and person–centered care. Rare examples are highlighted in this paper, in which this type of experience is seen not only in view of a patient’s autonomy but also through actions that go beyond certain standardized procedures. It is a higher level of understanding of a human compared to the one of the prevalent biomedical model. This paper outlines the experiences of three nurses from the Republic of Croatia who participated in the administration of sacraments during their regular work in nursing care. These experiences include administering the sacrament of baptism to a newborn with a predicted fatal outcome as the priest was unavailable, and the sacrament of Holy Communion to a patient whom the priest could not physically access. Preliminary results are presented along with a review of the literature, with the aim of preparing a more comprehensive study with a greater number of respondents. The first results show that in the healthcare system of the Republic of Croatia, there are nurses who participate in the administration of sacraments, but they state that they do not have sufficient knowledge about the process. During the formal education of nurses, there are no contents that would deal with the described phenomena, although the necessity of meeting the spiritual needs of patients is emphasized.

Bericht über das Verhör des religiösen Schwärmers Mikuláš Vlásenický im Jahre 1471 und seine deutsche Übertragung durch Martin Paeonius. Zu einer frühen Übersetzung aus dem Tschechischen ins Deutsche

Author(s): Václav Bok / Language(s): German Issue: 2/2024

The report of the interrogation of the arrested religious visionary Mikuláš Vlásenický at Choustník Castle in 1471 is known from two Czech copies dated around the mid 16th century. It was published in print around the 1540s, but only one incomplete copy has survived (Library of the National Museum in Prague, signature 27 F 27 Adl. 4.). The entry in the manuscript collection of Martin Bydžovský of Florentino on King Maximilian II (National Archives Prague, fund of the Vyšehrad Chapter, Book 358) for 1576 is a copy of another, nowadays no more existing, edition. According to the report, which unambiguously favours Vlásenický, it was a religious disputation rather than an interrogation, the main subject of which was communion under one or both kinds. Vlásenický allegedly defeated the Catholic priests and was acquitted. Around 1558, the Lutheran clergyman Martin Peonius translated the report from Czech into German. He omitted several passages, but instead expanded the text significantly and intensified the attacks against the Catholics and the Pope. His translation was published in at least 16 editions between 1558 and 1610. It is one of the oldest translations from Czech into German.
