Author(s): V.V. Abashev / Language(s): Russian Issue: 1/2015

The article considers public monuments in a rhetorical perspective – as manifestations of local identity, or statements about the nature and mission of the city. It is demonstrated that there exist two competing monumental rhetorics in the urban environment of Perm. The industrial-military rhetoric unites an extensive group of monuments dating back to the Soviet era and those newly erected. Such monuments inscribe Perm into the heroic discourse of the Soviet epoch. Although the soviet memorial policy used to be universal for the whole state, in Perm it is not lacking for local individuality. Here, in particular, instruments of production and sample armament are displayed in the function of monuments. An alternative to this industrial-military rhetoric could be viewed in that of ‘Perm the Great’ (Perm’ Velikaya). It aggregates monuments appealing to the archaic heritage and ancient history of Perm Krai. This group of monuments suggests an image of Perm as a successor to the ancient culture, a city that made a special contribution to the history of Russian culture. Rhetoric of ‘Perm the Great’ was actively developed in the 2000-s. One of its distinctive features is the motive of Permian animal style. These are employed both in sculpture and in architectural decorum. The article establishes that the urban environment development highlights the multi layered and multidimensional nature of the city identity and its irreducibilty to a common denominator. Likewise, territory images construction, though sometimes acquiring a form of the search for a metaphysical substance of a city, such as Genius Loci, is in fact a ground for struggle and competition of various social, professional and political groups.

Author(s): Hezi Askerhan Eynalov / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 2/2009

Assessing Levels of CO2, CO, NO2 and SO2 in Indoor Air Using Dräger Sensors: A Case Study of Prishtina, Kosovo

Author(s): Fatbardh Gashi,Shyqri Dumani,Naser Troni / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2017

Studies in large cities revealed that indoor air pollution concentrations are at such levels where it can cause serious health impacts. The main source of the release of substances in the environment is the emission of gases (produced during the combustion process) such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, sulphur oxides, nitrogen oxides, ammonia and others. In this study the assessment of indoor air quality in 26 places in Prishtina city were investigated and the main objective of this study was monitoring of the air quality through the determination of gases concentration of C02, C0, N0x and S02. Also the ratio of CO2/CO2+CO was calculated. Concentrations of CO2, CO, SO2 and NOx were determined using “Dräger” instrument, model “X-am 7000 digital gas monitor”. Environmental risk assessment of air quality was done by comparing the obtained results with air WHO standards. During that period were found a permanent presence of some toxic gases in high concentrations in indoor areas. Results show that CO2 levels were ranged 300-4000 ppmv. The concentration of CO was ranged 0.6-17 ppmv and was reported to be under limits value in all locations. Also concentrations of SO2 and NOx (except air sample S6) were reported to be under WHO air limits value. According to gases concentration, many locations show values characteristic for highly and extremely contaminated indoor places.

Викториански поглед към бъдещето за век напред

Author(s): Tzveta Todorova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 5/2017

The Victorian Age (1837 – 1901) is the famous period of British Queen Victoria’s rule. At the border between the two centuries, it is quite natural for the Victorian man to look at the future of mankind in 100 years. The reasons for this interest are determined by the changes in the economic and spiritual sphere. The successful continuation of the industrial revolution, especially in technology, the intensive infrastructure development, the construction of new railways, the active colonial expansion of England in Asia and Africa, stimulate such interest. The article discusses the Victorian vision of the world for the year 2000. A project under the title: “Life in 2000” was recorded on the occasion of celebrating the year 1900. It represents a series of 12 postcards produced by the leading Dutch producer of chocolate “Theodor Hildebrand and son” who, past the pastries, undertake the printing of images illustrating the man’s ideas about the type of world after 100 years. These ideas are extremely entertaining with their subject matter and because some of them have found a place in today’s modern day.

Author(s): Snezhana Popova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 9/2017

The article focuses on the relevance and importance of the issue of violence prevention in the school environment, as well as on the key role of upbringing as a protective factor for the prevention of child and adolescent problem behavior. Various forms of violence in contemporary Bulgarian society determine the aggression in interpersonal communication in school environment. The theoretical arguments in this paper are organized mainly on the idea that ignorance and underestimation of education as a protective factor exacerbate the adverse impact of numerous negative phenomena in our social reality, such as unemployment, poverty, distrust in institutions, violence in interpersonal communication, rising crime etc. Focusing on rethinking the specific ways of activating the upbringing resources in Bulgarian school is relevant to overcome the influence of destructive factors in our society. The research emphasizes the importance of professional competence of the teacher as educator, in order to implement adequate preventive initiatives related to prevention of destructive and violent behavior of adolescents.

Social History as Revealed by Gesture: Changing Eighteenth-Century Styles of Meeting and Greeting

Author(s): Penelope J. Corfield / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2018

This essay explores the significance of changing styles of interpersonal greetings in Britain in the long eighteenth century (from 1700 to the 1850s). Everyday rituals of hat honour, when men removed their hats and women curtseyed, were increasingly undertaken in a brisker and much less elaborate manner. Yet there was also change within change. A new alternative style of greeting was emerging in the form of the handshake. The urban, social, cultural, and class contexts of such changes are analyzed, pointing to multi-directional historical trends in the intimate rituals of everyday life.

Author(s): Daniel Nigohosyan / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 3/2018

The study examines the significance of the contribution of the 2007 – 2013 Regional Development Operational Program (OPRD), co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), to energy efficiency of buildings. The framework of the analysis is based on a logic model and the methodology also includes a unit cost analysis. The article presents the overall progress on energy efficiency at European and national level and provides conclusions regarding the progress, contribution, and efficiency of energy efficiency measures funded under the program. The overall conclusion of the study is that in spite of the good absorption rate of OPRD 2007 – 2013, the ERDF is not used efficiently; the contribution of the program to the energy efficiency of buildings is not significant; and the design of the program and the specific energy efficiency measures do not include sufficiently specific and justified objectives.

Transhumanizm czy humanizm? Krytyczne spojrzenie na nową ideologię

Transhumanizm czy humanizm? Krytyczne spojrzenie na nową ideologię

Author(s): Marian Falenczyk SAC / Language(s): English,Polish Issue: 1/2018

The western world is slowly recognizing the threats resulting from the new ideology called transhumanism that started thirty years ago in the United States. The ideology of transhumanism draws from rapidly converging technologies such as nanotechnology, biotechnology, artificial intelligence, cognitive science and genetic engineering. Transhumanism wants to be a positive response to postmodernism and nihilism sweeping developed countries. It aspires to ignore the natural law and current anthropology. It aims to cover all dimensions of the human being to ensure unlimited earth-life extendibility, happiness and unfathomable pleasure. Transhumanism takes aim to eradicate current civilizations and cultures, rejects history, nationality, family and religion. Instead transhumanism wants to introduce global culture and civilization for a human as a product of biotechnology. Transhumanism reduces the human to a material dimension and intentionally confines him to this dimension. The progress of the new ideology appears difficult to stop and its catastrophic impact on humans and society is difficult to foresee. We must therefore explore the field of philosophy; mostly through returning to the metaphysics of existence by St Thomas Aquinas, through affirmation of biblical anthropology and finally through a comprehensive return to contemplative theology.

The Other Like Me. Three-and-a-Half Voices to the Theoretically and Practically Valid Problem

Author(s): Ryszard Nycz / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2016

This article tackles the problem of how we understand the Other – a problem related to the dichotomy of ‘us vs. them’ in divided communities. Nycz identifies two dominant positions in this area: the Eurocentric position, which corresponds to European and North American anthropology’s universalist approach, and multiculturalism, which recognizes the equality of cultural variants. Both perspectives, Nycz argues, have reached an impasse: the first because by has appropriated the debate and attained a dominant position over the Other, and the second because it tends to stifle theoretical conflict, which risks weakening its ethical engagement. Nycz postulates a different approach. The ability to see individuals and the community (culture) from the perspective of the Other (a perspective that may be internalized or external) is posited as an inherent element of critical self-knowledge. Bakhtin’s notion of ‘outsidedness’ or ‘exotopy’ (vnenakhodimost) represents for Nycz a solid foundation to develop a universal category of historical cultural anthropology.

From a Poetics of Space to a Politics of Place: The Topographical Turn in Literary Studies

Author(s): Elżbieta Rybicka / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2016

The article’s subject is a topographical turn in literary research, considered in association with the spatial turn in humanities. It in particular concerns contemporary reconfigurations, both in the area of new concepts of space and the discipline itself which is open today for circulation of ideas and notions from other areas. The essay indicates the main directions of interest of the research current in question, including e.g.: new regionalism; ecocriticism; literary urban studies; relations between literary representations of space and individual/collective identity; interrelations between literature and geography. Characterised are the basic determinants of new concepts of space, e.g. connecting spatiality with temporality, reinstated category of site, interest in hybrid(ic)/transitive spaces and heterotopias, and the fundamental shift in the perspective – from a poetics of space to one of site.
