Author(s): Oluseyi A. Olagoke,Olusola O. Bamisile / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2017

Sustainability has become a qualifying factor in every human endeavor and architectural educators could really not care less in ensuring a holistic education premised on the tenets of both conscientious and discretionary use of the ever-depleting natural resources much of which is morally right to be left for yet many future generations. Also, since a good proportion of architecture graduates from Nigerian tertiary institutions end up as teachers in architecture departments, it becomes important to understand the level of their knowledge of the concept of building sustainability while in school as understanding this could be helpful in positioning them to be better architectural educators. This research hence focuses on six selected departments of architecture and architectural technologies in tertiary institutions in southwest Nigeria and the aim is to establish whether the concept of sustainability is well taught and understood both by architectural educators and students. Open and close-ended questionnaires were distributed to students and the results are analyzed using statistical tools. Consequently, findings derived from this survey are hoped to help inform a set of recommendations aimed at enhancing improved knowledge acquisition by these teaming future professionals thus ensuring a holistic and balanced training and education necessary for proper entrenchment of the much needed sustainability consciousness and awareness in Nigeria.

Characterization and Effects of Noise Levels of Portable Generators Used in Residential Buildings in Ibadan Metropolis, Nigeria: A Case Study

Characterization and Effects of Noise Levels of Portable Generators Used in Residential Buildings in Ibadan Metropolis, Nigeria: A Case Study

Author(s): Akeem Wahab / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2018

The proliferation of generators used in urban settlements in Nigeria over the years has been a major source of concern to the health and comfort of building occupants. This study, therefore, assessed the impact of outdoor and indoor noise levels associated with the use of generators on the environment and building occupants. The study area, Ibadan Metropolis, was divided into core, transition and suburban zones. Five (5) residential buildings were purposively selected in each of the core, transition and suburban zones of the study area. Measurement of noise levels was taken with the use of a digital sound level meter with compliance to NESREA and OSHA standards. The outdoor noise levels before and during use of generators were taken at 0, 2 and 4m from external walls of the buildings sampled while the corresponding indoor noise levels were taken at the actively useable internal space; at a least distance of 1m from internal walls, 1.2 - 1.5m above floor level and 1.5m from windows. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse the data collected. The findings of the study revealed that the mean indoor noise levels of 79.97 dB, 87.4 dB during use of generators in residential buildings were highest in the core zone and above the permissible limits. The study concluded that there should be adoption of best house-keeping practices by positioning generators in properly built enclosure features; and efforts made to enforce sales and procurement of generators with noise abatement mechanisms that can conform to ISO 3744 and local codes so as to mitigate impact of its high noise levels on the health and comfort of building occupants.

Czy Teoria Aktora-Sieci daje narzędzia do ekokrytyki?

Author(s): Krzysztof Abriszewski / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2018

Abriszewski asks whether Bruno Latour’s longtime theoretical project offers or is able to offer a viable conceptual tool for ecocriticism. By this he means any concepts and ideas for the critical analysis of social and cultural reality in the context of environmental problems. The analysis follows three paths: 1. Latour’s famous claim that we have never been modern; 2. The theoretical position elaborated in Latour’s Facing Gaia; 3. A short discussion of some of Latour’s recent critics. In conclusion Abriszewski suggests that Latour’s concept of modernity ought to be reconstructed in order to become useful for the critical work.

Waste Reduction as an Innovative Strategy: Case Studies

Waste Reduction as an Innovative Strategy: Case Studies

Author(s): Edyta Gheribi,Anna Wronka,Beata Gotwald-Feja / Language(s): English Issue: 12.2/2017

As presented in the article, the issue of waste management is crucial for contemporary economies, especially from a perspective of the citizens. Companies apply various methods to manage waste in a sustainable way, usually limiting their activities to the scheme of “reduce, re-use and recycle”. Although the needs of global community are the same (in terms of sustainable development) regardless country of origin, the companies apply different strategies of waste management. The insourcing model may be perceived as a way to gather waste from available places (streets, scrap-heaps or garbage dumps) and re-used to create a new value for the obtained resources. The outsourcing model is a chance for companies which have some production waste to be disposed. In it the customers (or generally speaking – people) are interested in gaining the resources to create a new product which is far from a firstly produced. The choice for specific model is irrelevant, because the crucial issue is sustainability which can be achieved by synergic cooperation of all waste-cycle members.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF STREET PATTERNS IN ISRAELI CITIES

THE DEVELOPMENT OF STREET PATTERNS IN ISRAELI CITIES

Author(s): Itzhak Omer,Orna Zafrir-Reuven / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2015

Street patterns of Israeli cities were investigated by comparing three time periods of urban development: (I) the late 19th century until the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948; (II) 1948 until the 1980s; and (III) the late 1980s until the present. These time periods are related respectively to the pre-modern, modern and late-modern urban planning approach. Representative urban street networks were examined in selected cities by means of morphological analysis of typical street pattern properties: curvature, fragmentation, connectivity, continuity and differentiation. The study results reveal significant differences between the street patterns of the three examined periods in the development of cities in Israel. The results show clearly the gradual trends in the intensification of curvature, fragmentation, complexity and hierarchical organization of street networks as well as the weakening of the network's internal and external connectivity. The implications of these changes on connectivity and spatial integration are discussed with respect to planning approaches.

SUBURBAN VS. URBAN FRINGES ENTITIES’ WILLINGNESS TO PAY FOR AMENITIES: EMPIRICAL RESEARCH IN CRACOW CITY, POLAND

Author(s): Piotr Lityński / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2015

The aim of this paper is to estimate the value of selected amenities of infrastructure, space and public services on both sides of the cities’ administrative borders and its territorial implications. The used method is the estimation of WTP. The method was addressed to households and companies located in the district adjoining areas which are administratively not part of the city, and that are judged to be strongly characterized by the processes of suburbanization. The conclusions of the study indicate that the administrative border of the city is polarized in terms of a household economic profile. Residents of both regions express their needs for amenities and suburban residents generally estimate their value higher. While firms from both areas are not interested in improvements, the administrative border of the city does not really differentiate businesses (size, employment, wages).

Author(s): Fatih Kandemir / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 3/2018

The effects of heredity and the environment on the development of human being, which is a multidimensional being, have been discussed for many years. Studies on the religious development of man were also influenced by these discussions. In this context, in order to better understand the nature of religious development, some theories such as behavioral, cognitive or stage theories have emerged. In a sense, these theories have also identified the direction of religious development. However, many of these theories did not address their religious development as a whole. This restricted the understanding of religious development. Therefore, this article has two main purposes. First, to bring the ecological theory which is the human development model proposed by Bronfenbrenner, which considers human development as a whole with the environment and events in which it lives, to the literature of our country's religion psychology. The second aim is that to contribute to a better understanding of the psychological foundations of religious development through the use of this theory. In this article where qualitative research method has been used, some quantitative study data have been used. In the article, the ecosystem, ecosystem, macrosystem, and the effect of each of the chronosystem on religious development is discussed. In this article, it is concluded that approach to religious development in the context of ecological theory can be useful.
