W. G. Sebald czuje. Melancholiczny zawrót głowy

Author(s): Sławomir Masłoń / Language(s): Polish Issue: 5/2016

In this article on W. G. Sebald’s writerly strategies Masłoń mainly draws on Walter Benjamin’s theory of tragic drama. His goal is to show the ways in which the reader, caught in melancholy discourse, is subjected to narrative manipulation; thanks to this manipulation the traumatic void (written about in order to be commemorated) is transformed into the aesthetic completeness of empathising with the writer’s ‘authentic’ sensitivity. Sebald’s writing is, therefore, sentimental in terms of both content and form: the procedures intended to suggest traces of trauma in the narrative – such as the characters’ depsychologisation or the fragmentation of the narrative – fail to make us question the possibility of representation. Instead, these procedures are overcome and absorbed in the author’s potentially infinite knowledge and erudition.

C. G. Jung a Hermann Hesse: Umìní, terapie a zdroje tvorby

C. G. Jung a Hermann Hesse: Umìní, terapie a zdroje tvorby

Author(s): Pavel Kalina / Language(s): Czech Issue: 3/2015

An intimate relationship of Hermann Hesse to analytical psychology, based on his personal contact with C. G. Jung and his disciple J. B. Lang, belongs to the well-known topics from the history both of literature and of psychotherapy of the past century. The foregoing studies were, however, writte in the time when Jung´s pivotal work, The Red Book, was not available to the public. The Book was written as a medieval manuscript where an important role is played not only by words but also by pictures which were painted by Jung himself. In this article I deal with the question how far it is possible to use Hesse´s texts, especially his novel Demian, for better understanding of Jung´s ideas, in particular his approach to images in the framework of the therapeutic process at the time when The Red Book was written. Besides, I will analyze the hypothetical pictorial sources which could have been used by Jung when writing The Red Book. These sources could have been the works of the Beuron school which could be known to Jung either from his own experience or from photos and postcards. The extensive visual culture of the time of the “print capitalism” could supply the visual inspiration both to Jung, and to Hesse.

Neuroscientist, Eric Kandel, features aims for psychoanalysis, which are unvoidable for integration into neuroscience.

An attempt is made to analyze the common and distinctive features of the coats of arms of football clubs of different countries. Modern football is an ethno-cultural phenomenon. Attributes and symbols become an element of globalization and identification. Undoubtedly, the main element of football symbols is the emblem or emblem of the club. Football in the modern world forms a separate culture that needs to be studied and researched. The purpose of this article is to trace and analyze the transformation of football heraldry and ethno-cultural features of football emblems. The historiography of the study of football and football paraphernalia in particular is quite specific and diverse. The aim of the study was to determine the frequency of sexual harassment perpetrated by coaches in youth sports activities and to examine the association of those experiences with depression, anxiety, and stress in later life. Study participants were young men and women (n = 501; Mage = 20,86, SD = 1,81) who participated in sports before they turned 18 years old. The results showed that 25 % of participants experienced some form of sexual harassment by coaches while they were minors. Participants who had this kind of experience obtained higher results on depression, anxiety, and stress scales. The results indicate the need to undertake measures aimed at preventing and stopping sexual harassment in youth sport.

Jhumpa Lahiri and Psychological Dislocation in “Interpreter of Maladies”

Jhumpa Lahiri and Psychological Dislocation in “Interpreter of Maladies”

Author(s): Smaranda Ștefanovici / Language(s): English Issue: 18/2015

As a postcolonial female writer, J. Lahiri’s favorite themes spin around nostalgic lament for her Indian origins, psychological dislocation, cultural disjunction and the trauma of self-transformation through immigration. The inability to see the world clearly points to the characters’ impossibility of communicating due to unspoken truths that deform reality and hence hinder interpretation and understanding of feelings. In Interpreter of Maladies, Lahiri advocates for a second generation immigrant character, whose hybrid condition allows him to communicate across gender, linguistic, and cross-cultural borders. Unfortunately, her characters fail to translate and interpret this liminal space. Despite Lahiri’s search as a lonely child and later as a writer, she has not found a remedy for this chronic, spiritual malady of this breakdown of communication yet. Her message in the short story “Interpreter of Maladies” is that you can be a foreigner in a new land or even within one’s family.

Discursul cognitiv al antropologiei lingvistice – Sursă pentru potenţarea cunoaşterii

Discursul cognitiv al antropologiei lingvistice – Sursă pentru potenţarea cunoaşterii

Author(s): Violeta Negrea / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 19/2015

The article outlines the capacity of anthropological exploration of language enabling cross domains knowledge through the reconstruction of ideologies, beliefs, habits, traditions specific to the culture of social communities. The research opportunities opened by contextualized linguistic information are supported by communication functionality and non-neutral relationship between linguistic sign representing the world, the world itself and references. The language samples analyzed anthropologically bring forward the social and cultural nature of the linguistic information. The understanding and acknowledgement of the language accumulation of cultural values target the improvement and responsibility of the social behaviour (Hudson, 1980:2-4) expressed in the material nature of word.

Lawrence

Author(s): Florentina Marin / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 4/2019

The following article is a study on different hypostases of the subconscious mind, present in the novels of Andrei Bely and D.H. Lawrence. Its objective is to examine the importance of this theme for Modernist prose and also to discuss the main similarities and differences in the writers’ approach of this phenomenon. Although there are several major differences in their approach, generated by the social, political and traditional background, both authors seem to consider the subconscious a dark, hidden side of the human psyche, which preserves the suppressed instincts and desires. Their description corresponds to the Freudian concept of the Id and the general message in both novels is that the repressed emotions and the inner conflicts can become important risk factors which cause social violence and self-destructive behaviour. At the same time, given their affinity to Symbolism, the writers use several symbols, with the help of which they make an interesting description of their characters’ inner tension. All these allow them to create complex characters and to study the discrepancies in their personalities.

Anne Kimliğine Kuramsal Bir Bakış (2000-2020)

Anne Kimliğine Kuramsal Bir Bakış (2000-2020)

Author(s): Özlem Kale / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 1/2022

It has been determined twenty seven stories and novels titled with 'mother' in Turkish literature between 2000 and 2020. These works are thematically classified and those selected by stratified sampling were analysed with psychoanalysis or logotherapy method. Some specific outcomes are achieved with psychoanalysis of the mother characters in these works. In the majority of the works, it is represented as if motherhood and individual existence can not be all together. In small number of the stories, the women are criticized for not participating in social life and being housewives despite being educated. In the works highlighting the harms of gender discrimination, it is underlined that women should be first treated as "person" instead of "spouse and mother". Given the big effect of literature on public opinion, it is obvious that this should be emphasized in more works in order to make the right woman perspective become widespread. The woman has the ability to provide the continuation of the generation by nature. However, motherhood is not a genetic specification of woman but a social structure. The societies are adopted with the rule of the child needing a mother for living. As the economical production values the child, the motherhood is valued in the society and the ideal motherhood is shaped in these conditions. Our work will be eye-opening in terms of emphasizing the importance of this ideal by mass communication and literature too.

Reprezentări ale realului în opera lui Viktor Pelevin

Reprezentări ale realului în opera lui Viktor Pelevin

Author(s): Florentina Marin / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 2/2012

The present article is an analysis of the mental representations of reality in Viktor Pelevin’s short story Nika and the novel Buddha's Little Finger. The writer demonstrates the purely subjective manner in which humans perceive and interpret the surrounding world and the events that happen in their lives. The subjectivity of their interpretations is due to some particular factors: on the one hand, the natural or innate factor present in each individual, which consists of the perceptive abilities and the human archetypes which exist in the collective unconsciousness. On the other hand, this subjectivity is closely related to the social background of the individual and consists of beliefs, traditions, mentality, social rules, ideology etc. As revealed from Pelevin’s writings, the mental representations of reality arise from the conjunction of these two factors. The individual is often surrounded by his false/incorrect interpretations which eventually become simulacra that change and reshape his “universe of representations”. The writer points at the heroes’ superficial and illusionary representations by ironically denying the existence of any reality, as shown in the novel Buddha's Little Finger. Once more we have to point out that the writer does not deny reality as an external condition of his characters, but the false conceptions and misinterpretations which govern people’s lives.

Fabricating Remembrance and Perpetuating Repression: Nation-Building and the “Romanian Soul”

Fabricating Remembrance and Perpetuating Repression: Nation-Building and the “Romanian Soul”

Author(s): Lucian Țion / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2022

Using the playtext of the theatrical performance Romanian History Abridged, which premiered in Cluj in 2021, I investigate the way in which Lacanian psychoanalysis relates to the repression of historical facts, and the perpetuation of a mythicized version of Romanian history. This state-sponsored practice favors the preservation of the ongoing Romanian identity crisis, which, I argue, describes national culture. In the article I also explain the way in which the play deconstructs the dominant nationalist discourse through various theatrical devices such as the Verfremdungseffekt, and the employment of satire and irony, which are used to question, reposition and decontextualize such founding myths as the Daco-Roman ethnogenesis thesis, and the treatment of fascist figures like Corneliu Zelea Codreanu and Ion Antonescu in current Romanian historical narratives.

Des instances de la répétition

Des instances de la répétition

Author(s): Mihaela Țurcanu Lazarov / Language(s): French Issue: 1/2022

The theme of this symposium is precise and yet it opens onto a dizzying multitude of hypostases of repetition in cinematographic and theatrical works, not without psychoanalysis, over time. Since it is precisely a matter of the subject's time and modalities of dealing with the drive. While each subject is, de facto, subject to time, the time he has, an unpredictable datum with accuracy, par excellence.

Sprawcy agresji i przemocy wobec zwierząt. Od czynników osobowościowych i sytuacyjno-społecznych do psychopatii i antyspołecznego zaburzenia osobowości

Author(s): Ewa Czerwińska-Jakimiuk / Language(s): Polish Issue: 9/2022

Ewa Czerwińska-Jakimiuk’s aim in this article is to discuss selected aspects of human aggression and violence against animals. She presents definitions of aggression and violence, a description of these phenomena, and the results of selected empirical studies. These studies take into account the socio-demographic characteristics of the perpetrators of violence against animals, the most common personality disorders, criminal behavior, legal actions taken against them, and – in the case of children and adolescents using violence against animals – the causes and correlates of the phenomenon, motivational background and effects. Further in the article, Czerwińska-Jakimiuk analyzes the factors most often correlating with aggression and violence as a personality trait (e.g., aggressiveness, fear, self-control, and empathy) and as a situational-social phenomenon (e.g., frustration, relative deprivation, and social learning) as well as psychopathy and antisocial personality disorder.

Prawda podstawową wartością w nauce

Prawda podstawową wartością w nauce

Author(s): Eunice Hempolińska-Nowik / Language(s): Polish Issue: 3/2021

The author argues that truth is the basic value in all sciences including psychology. Respecting this value requires understanding different theories of truth, including the Aristotelian classical theory, Russell’s correspondence theory, and Tarski’s semantic theory. This is further presented and discussed in the first part of the article. In the second part, the author discusses different epistemological approaches to the correspondence between perceptual experience and reality and identifies the one favouring understanding in the science of psychology. The author further discusses and emphasises the dangers of confusing beliefs and truth in science. In the next part of the article the consequences and dangers of relativizing truth and of multiplying its subjective types are discussed. The author then refers to an approach which proposes a break with ideals in the assessment of the adequacy of assertions made by social sciences. The author outlines the difference between the concepts of idea and ideal and their roles in psychology. Finally, the author discusses and opposes irrationalism in science, outlining the importance of safeguarding the value of truth in order to achieve the goals set by psychology.

Poetika traume ili prepričavanje nemogućeg. Književne strategije posttraumatskih narativa u romanima i kratkim pričama Bekima Sejranovića

Poetika traume ili prepričavanje nemogućeg. Književne strategije posttraumatskih narativa u romanima i kratkim pričama Bekima Sejranovića

Author(s): Agata Jawoszek-Goździk / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 19/2021

In this paper I analyze Bekim Serjanović’s novels From Nowhere to Nowhere (Nigdje, niotkuda), The Prettier End (Ljepši kraj) and A Nomad’s Diary (Dnevnik jednog nomada). I also mention two short stories: Miss Misery on Susak (Miss Misery na otoku Susku) and Sleepless for One Hundred and Thirty Hours (Sto trideset sati bez sna) as examples of the author’s strategy of retelling the trauma of non-belonging and the traumatic experience of immigration. Since the prose created by Sejranović is a combination of fictional and factual, but with a strong autobiographical dimension, in the analysis I start from Freud`s psychoanalytic theory of trauma interpreted by Cathy Caruth and the concept of cultural trauma caused by great social changes. Then I proceed to argue which literary and narrative strategies Sejranović used to express his traumatic experiences.
