Author(s): Małgorzata Klimasz / Language(s): Polish Issue: 8/2018

Author(s): Yusuf Soylu,Fatih Atik,Mehmet Öçalan / Language(s): Turkish Issue: S1/2017

This research was carried out on 335 students (170 males and 165 females) in Anatolian High School, Science High School and Sports High School in Kırıkkale. The aim of the study was to compare the social appearance anxiety levels according to gender, age, school and sporting / non-sporting variables of adolescents who did and did not perform sports. The research method was the Social Appearance Anxiety Scale (SSI) scale. Hart et al. (2008) developed a self-report style measure designed to measure the emotional, cognitive, and behavioral anxieties experienced by an individual about appearance. The Turkish adaptation study of the scale was carried out by Doğan (2010). The Social Appearance Anxiety Scale is a measure of 16 items. High scores from the social anxiety scale, which measures social anxiety in one dimension, indicate that the anxiety of appearance is high. The Cronbach Alpha coefficient of your scale was .86 In the study, it was determined that the social appearance anxiety levels of adolescents did not show any significant difference according to age variable. It is seen that there is a significant difference according to the variables of the adolescents, gender, school and sporting/not doing.

The Portraiture of Stockholm Syndrome: Cultural Dislocation in Phillis Wheatley’s Poetry Collection and Selected African American Texts

The Portraiture of Stockholm Syndrome: Cultural Dislocation in Phillis Wheatley’s Poetry Collection and Selected African American Texts

Author(s): Emmanuel Adeniyi / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2018

One of the tropes that have often been glossed over in African American literature is the concept of Stockholm Syndrome. The syndrome emphasizes irrationality and abnormal psychological or mental disposition of Stockholm Syndrome sufferers towards individuals responsible for their pitiable conditions. This article examines the conception and its nexus with slavery and the use of religion (Christianity) as an ideological tool for the indoctrination or brainwashing of African slaves and their descendants in the United States of America. I argue that the syndrome, though conceived as a correlate of Freudian ego-defence mechanism, operates like a psychedelic or hallucinogenic drug which, according to Karl Marx, dulls the reasoning capacity and cerebration of the sufferers and prevents them from thinking rationally. Besides, it alters their perception of reality forcing them to accept abnormality as normality in a bid to create an escapist route for their fears, hurt feelings and pent-up wounds.

Female 'Weight' in the Nigerian Fiction: Iyayi's ‘Violence’ and Ibezute's ‘Dance of Horror’

Female 'Weight' in the Nigerian Fiction: Iyayi's ‘Violence’ and Ibezute's ‘Dance of Horror’

Author(s): Emmanuel Okereke / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2018

This article is a masculinist examination of Festus Iyayi’s Violence and Chukwuma Ibezute’s Dance of Horror. The article despises the ideological stance of some feminists – that women are unfairly treated in society and in literature by men. It explores women’s relationship with men and contends that every woman is in control of her man and society around her. The article shows how women use marriage, love, sex, their body, social status, kitchen and cradle influence to hold men to ransom. The article, however, recommends that men should not act on their women’s unverifiable and manipulative claims. In all, the article concludes that women are oppressive and exploitative to men.

The Deep State between the (Un)Warranted Conspiracy Theory and Structural Element of Political Regimes?

Author(s): Nebojša Blanuša / Language(s): English Issue: 49/2018

This paper tries to address a more general issue of conspiracy theories as knowledge, its (mis)treatments, selective and biased use, as well as specific features and outcomes of different epistemic approaches to conspiracy theories important for further clarification of this field of research. Following that, the author tries to explain why the ‘deep state’ is a good candidate for such a research of conspiratorial knowledge as a field of contesting interpretations. Conceptually speaking, the ‘deep state’ is considered as a sort of systemic, political arch-conspiracy, or the parapolitical structure organized for permanent conspiratorial enterprises. In that sense, it functions as a metaphorical umbrella for state conspiracies and includes many contested singular conspiracy theories. Furthermore, it will be shown, through the analysis of the current scholarly literature on the ‘deep state’, how the knowledge produced by those scholars who believe in its existence can be contested and compared with (non) conspiratorial public interpretations, and other experts’ arguments who are not ‘enchanted’ by this concept. The purpose of such research would be to explore differences in argumentation, providing a basis for evidence-building and alternative explanations between these various groups of social agents. Based on this information, further more rigorous social science research should enable us to build the criteria for differentiation between warranted and unwarranted conspiratorial scepticism.

Metafora konsumpcji. Sposób opisu zmian kulturowych i społecznych w Ameryce lat 80. i 90. XX wieku w filmie Co gryzie Gilberta Grape’a Lassego Hallströma

Author(s): Małgorzata Bogunia- Borowska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 02/2018

The purpose of the paper is to present an image of American society presented in the movie What is eating Gilbert Grape by Lasse Hallström. It is the film that not only represents a consumer society, but promises the coming crises as a result of such social idea. This somewhat forgotten film is a penetrating analysis of consumer society. It points to the traps of the social and cultural model of consumption, which came to life after the Second World War an idea - a valve of security for Western societies, and which was to unload tensions and eliminate problems. The author of the movie uses food perfectly as a literal implementation of the next American dream about the ideal society and ideal citizens-consumers. Noting the risks and threats associated with it and anticipating the crisis of long-term implementation of the consumer society model.

Zdolność do bycia w dialogu jako kompetencja komunikacyjna w kontekście dozoru kuratorskiego

Author(s): Łukasz Storch / Language(s): Polish Issue: 3/2017

The pedagogy correctional probation as part of the curatorial supervision depends on the choice of the type of interaction and forms, and success in their important role played by probation officers. The interactions between probation officer and the ward reveals a dialogical space that relationship. It has many forms, among which we can mention, among others, “meeting” and “dialogue”. This fits in with the philosophy and existential dialogue presented by Martin Buber, according to which a real conversation, thus fulfilling the relationship between human beings constitutes acceptance of otherness. “Humanity and humanity become real meetings. People need and can also confirm each other in their individual being”. The process of rehabilitation requires dialogical proceedings against ward. Dialog fact closer to the people by its openness and reciprocity. According to Stanislaw Sławiński, “dialogue is a conversation free from all adulteration, and so the caller must see each other in person, to be honest, and at the same time what they say must coincide with the real facts. Th ey need to talk to each other about something they believe is important, what makes really want to give something back and something from the other side to hear”. You can refer to the nature of the phenomena associated with the activities of probation, in which special significance is dialogic aspect.

Mit racjonalnego łotra. Statystyka i psychologia kontra ekonomiczna analiza prawa

Mit racjonalnego łotra. Statystyka i psychologia kontra ekonomiczna analiza prawa

Author(s): Radosław Zyzik / Language(s): Polish Issue: 29/2018

The aim of the paper is to critically assess the economic decision making model in criminal law from the perspective of empirical legal studies and behavioral analysis of law. In the second half of the XX century the economic theory of punishment had dominant influence on criminal law policy in US. At the beginning of XXI century numerous statistical studies have shown limited effectiveness of the economic approach and harmful effects of the large number of prisoners currently being incarcerated. Therefore the new model of decision-making in criminal law was needed. Psychologists, behavioral economists and proponents of behavioral analysis of law were able to identify factors influencing decisions of criminals including hyperbolic discounting, optimism bias and affective forecasting.

Dlaczego respondenci wybierają odpowiedź „nie mam zdania” w badaniach konsumenckich

Dlaczego respondenci wybierają odpowiedź „nie mam zdania” w badaniach konsumenckich

Author(s): Anna Matel,Tomasz Poskrobko / Language(s): English Issue: 29/2018

In surveys, which are a commonly accepted research method in social sciences, we always observe a certain percentage of respondents giving no-opinion responses such as “no opinion” or “hard to say”. In this study, we treat no-opinion responses as a motivated decision to refuse to respond. The aim of the study was to determine what factors involved in the organisation of a study increase the percentage of respondents who opt for no-opinion responses. The factors on which we focused include in particular the significance of the difficulty of questions; the order of questionnaire questions; motivating respondents through rewards, and the research technique. In the first part of the study, 575 students were divided into 5 groups. Each group was surveyed about environmental consumer attitudes in different survey conditions. In addition, the respondents were asked to rank the difficulty of individual questions in the survey. Findings: The study showed that the percentage of no-opinion responses increases as the questions become more difficult. The respondents were more likely to avoid stating their opinion on those unecological behaviors that they exhibited more frequently. The change of the research technique from a questionnaire to a direct interview caused a decrease in the percentage of no opinion responses. The respondents opted for a “no opinion” response less frequently when the interview was conducted by a lecturer than when it was conducted by a student. Changing the order of questions also affected the percentage of no-opinion responses; however, that was only true for questions that the respondents recognized as easy. Conclusions: The study showed that the choice of a research technique intended to reduce the percentage of no-opinion responses depends on the quality of questions. If they are difficult and require the respondents to engage cognitive resources, a better solution is to employ the direct interview method. However, if the questions are sensitive and the respondent may feel pressure to give a response that conforms to social norms, a better solution is to ensure them anonymity, e.g. by employing the questionnaire technique.

Integracja, emancypacja czy afirmacja? Tożsamości osób z niepełnosprawnościami we współczesnej Polsce

Integracja, emancypacja czy afirmacja? Tożsamości osób z niepełnosprawnościami we współczesnej Polsce

Author(s): Dorota Żuchowska-Skiba / Language(s): Polish Issue: 3/2018

The situation of people with disabilities has been fundamentally transformed in the last decades. Changes in the environment of people with disabilities contribute to this. People with disabilities are actively involved in fighting for their rights. This is also due to the widespread social model of defining disability. This creates conditions in which the identity of persons with disabilities may be redefined. This is particularly true for those who are actively involved in the development of people with disabilities. Their identity is constructed on the basis of new social roles that involve engaging in activities aimed at changing the position of persons with disabilities in society. The main aim of the article is to show how active people working for the environment of people with disabilities develop positive identities based on the affirmation of diversity, and to what extent they still perceive disability as a stigma, causing the exclusion of persons with disabilities from society. The study was based on narrative interviews with people actively working for the environment of people with disabilities to see what their identity orientation is.

To Feel the Thinking: Affective Procedures of History and Criticism (Today)

Author(s): Katarzyna Bojarska / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2017

The author traces the genealogy of contemporary humanities’ interest in the affect theory, pointing to the multiplicity of trends and kinds, and thus the impossibility and pointlessness of reducing this variety to one, clearly defined theory or a turn. She also mentions most basic assumptions of this methodology, its cognitive and aesthetic as well as political stakes, and problems encountered when this discourse had entered the sphere of the humanities.

Shadows in a Petrifying City

Author(s): Paweł Mościcki / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2017

The article is an attempt to analyze Michelangelo Antonioni’s Eclipse from the perspective of the construction of the affect. It aims at showing that modern cinema is no longer concentrated on the emotions of protagonists expressed through acting, but it rather constructs affects in all dimensions of cinematographic work and thus creates the more general vision of the affective .state of the world. The author tries to demonstrate it through the notions of the void, fossilization, gaze frustration, the eclipse of the affect and last but not least the relation Antonioni is establishing between contemporary petrification of emotions and capitalism.

SOCIODEMOGRAFSKI I DRUGI KORELATI TERMINALNIH VRIJEDNOSTI STUDENATA SOCIJALNE PEDAGOGIJE

SOCIODEMOGRAFSKI I DRUGI KORELATI TERMINALNIH VRIJEDNOSTI STUDENATA SOCIJALNE PEDAGOGIJE

Author(s): Amila Kadić,Mersiha Jusić / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 16/2018

The research included a suitable sample of students at the Department of Social Pedagogy in Zenica (N= 81), who completed a short socio-demographic survey and a Rokeach's Terminal Values Survey. Terminal values represent the goals of human existence, among which the following values might be distinguished: individual, collective, humane, and altruistic. Bearing in mind practical implications of knowing the values as such, the values which represent sources and guides for attitudes and behavior, and which have been shown to correlate significantly with numerous variables (cognitive functioning, free time, risk behavior, addiction), we considered it important to examine the most prominent terminal values among our students, and compare the results to the results of the available studies involving comparable groups of participants. Based on the findings, we derived six subscales of grouped terminal values: social harmony, self-actualization, personal gratification, security, love and affection, and personal satisfaction. Only the personal gratification variable showed normal distribution, while all other were negatively asymmetric, indicating, thus, an insufficient discrimination of Rokeach’s Terminal Values Scale. Generally, the participants deemed all terminal values significant. In the overall sample, the lowest ranked individual terminal values were exciting life, the world of beauty and money, while the highest ranked were family security, self-esteem, and personal happiness. The gender variable was statistically significantly correlated with the subscale of personal gratification. A Mann-Whitney’s test showed that personal gratification, measured by the items of comfortable life, exciting life, satisfaction and social recognition, statistically significantly correlated with the gender variable (U=237, p<0.01), so that the female participants considered these items more important (median 4.2) than the male participants (3.8). The birthplace was significantly positively correlated with wisdom evaluation (U=556; p<0.05), as well as the evaluation of freedom in non-cigarette consumers compared to their colleagues who consumed them regularly or occasionally (χ2=8.77, p=0.012).

Management of Change in the Changing School

Management of Change in the Changing School

Author(s): Gabriela Diana Niculescu,Florina Dorina Voicu / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2018

"Let us have the serenity of accepting what cannot be changed, the courage to change what can be changed, and especially the wisdom to make the difference between the two possibilities" Marc Aureliu. Since ancient times man as a social being has lived with other people. It goes without saying that human education has a paramount importance when it comes to its integration into society. Reflecting, but also actively contributing to the society’s evolution, the schools are in the permanent process of change. They both support and promote the change as a way for continuous modernization of economic and social life. In order to qualify for quality education, there is a need for schools in order to have an appropriate change management in educational field that will lead to a quality education for the pupils and will increase their chances to become well integrated in the society.

Organizational Conditioning of Job Satisfaction. A Model of Job Satisfaction

Organizational Conditioning of Job Satisfaction. A Model of Job Satisfaction

Author(s): Marcin Wnuk / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2017

Job satisfaction is an important predictor of job switching. Knowledge of the predictors of job satisfaction offers business owners and management staff the ability to shape the work environment so that the most valuable, loyal, and experienced employees can be retained in the company. The objective of this project is to test a model of job satisfaction based on person-organization fit (P-O fit), perceived organizational support (POS), and perceived supervisor support (PSS). The study examines whether PSS directly relates to employee job satisfaction or whether P-O fit or POS mediate in this relationship. Additionally, it is examined whether POS is a moderating variable between P-O fit and job satisfaction. The study was conducted using a sample 484 employees of a company in the IT sector. It turns out that POS, and P-O fit to the organization are variables that act as partial mediator between PSS and job satisfaction. The relationship between PSS and POS is both direct and indirect. P-O fit is a partial mediator of this relationship, while POS is both a partial mediator and a moderator between P-O fit and job satisfaction. Among employees who POS to be high, consistency between an employee’s and the organization’s values is indirectly connected with job satisfaction, whereas among employees who POS to be low, this relationship is both direct and indirect. In their operations, employers should focus on shaping managers’ attitudes towards their subordinates in an appropriate direction, as managers significantly influence employees’ perceived organizational support and job satisfaction.

Author(s): Đenita Tuce,Indira Fako,Enedina Hasanbegović-Anić,Sabina Alispahić / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 1/2018

The aim of this paper was to examine the potential mediation effect of perceived family adaptability and cohesion on the relationship between personality traits and satisfaction with life in adolescents. The research sample consisted of 425 participants (200 female and 225 male, with average age M=18 (SD=.72). The following instruments were applied: Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale, Big Five Personality Factors Self-reported Scale and Satisfaction with Life Scale. The results of regression analyses indicated that personality traits and family adaptability and cohesion account for 48% of total variance of satisfaction with life in adolescents. It was found that neuroticism, extraversion, agreeableness, openness to experience and perception of family adaptability and cohesion are significant predictors of satisfaction with life. A significant predictor of satisfaction with life is also conscientiousness, but only in the model without mediator. Conducted mediation analyses indicate that extraversion and openness to experience affect the satisfaction with life only directly, and conscientiousness only indirectly, through family adaptability and cohesion. For the dimensions neuroticism and agreeableness, however, both direct and indirect effects were significant. The results of this study clearly indicate the importance of perceived family interactions in explaining effects of big five personality traits on satisfaction with life in adolescents and considerably expand the existing empirical data in this area of research.

UTJECAJ VISOKOG OBRAZOVANJA NA SOCIOPOLITIČKU ORIJENTACIJU MLADIH

Author(s): Saša Drače,Aida Muheljić / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 1/2018

In an attempt to identify the social factors that are responsible for differences in people’s attitudes and behavior, research has found that higher education leads to liberalisation in students sociopolitical orientations, and a careful review of the literature also points to specific college-related effects. It turns out that social science students are more liberal at the end of their studies than engineering or hard science students. Research showing no significant differences in prejudice among first year students enrolled in different academic majors provide strong support for the socialisation hypothesis, and represents an important challenge for the disposition model according to which students choose those disciplines that best match their current views. This paper provides a synthesis of relevant research which tested the effects of university socialisation and the mechanisms that could explain why students’ attitudes change differently depending on their academic major. We also point out some limitations of previous research and give some recommendations for future work in this area

Sustainability—differently

Sustainability—differently

Author(s): Mirek Dymitrow,Keith Halfacree / Language(s): English Issue: 40/2018

It is increasingly appreciated how all societies contain many ‘wicked problems’ or socio-cultural challenges that are multidimensional, hard to pindown and consequently extremely challenging to solve. Obtaining functional and inclusive societal organisation is not a simple matter of ‘doing it’ by subscribing to winning formulae as there are, for example, many choices to be made in the process. Moreover, given that conceptual frameworks always guide thoughts, judgments and actions, how we relate to ‘sustainability’ specifically becomes relevant if we aim to achieve a more liveable society. This journal issue expressly engages with the consequent need to recognise this complexity. It assembles a set of ‘brave’ takes on far-advanced problems bedevilling conventionally conceptualised paths towards sustainability. Arguing against oversimplification that comes from domination of polarising concepts and unquestioned practices and rhetorics, the aim is to foster explorations into new territories from which we may learn. Ultimately, the desire to deconstruct pernicious divisions and create new hybrid syntheses can progress sustainability
