Pohybové aktivity a všímavosť u mladých ľudí

Author(s): Silvester Sawicki / Language(s): Slovak Issue: 4/2014

The paper deals with research the level of physical activities and mindfulness and their cross correlation of high school and of university students. Mindfulness is defined as a specific mental state and competency with broad-spectrum positive impact. The results showed that young people are not sufficiently physical activity and have underdeveloped competence of mindfulness. In this research variable we found a statistically significant difference between the sexes, wherein the boys have more physical activities than girls, and they have a higher score of mindfulness. We found that there are a statistically significant relationship between mindfulness and physical activities, too. We think that these research findings may be related to a lack of institutional education.

Author(s): Dagmar Faastová,František Baumgartner / Language(s): Slovak Issue: 3/2015

Exploring the value orientation may contribute to an understanding of why certain people participate in volunteer work whereas others do not. The aim of this paper is to describe the value orientation of Czech volunteers and explore if and how it differs from a representative sample of general Czech population. Value orientation was measured by Portrait Values Questionnaire (PVQ). The results of this empirical study showed that: (1) the most preferred value types among volunteers are self-direction, benevolence, and universalism; and (2) the higher-order value types preferred by volunteers significantly differ from the representative sample of general Czech population.

Socio-psychological and health-related factors behind plans of university students going abroad

Socio-psychological and health-related factors behind plans of university students going abroad

Author(s): Marta Kulanová,Oľga Orosová / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2016

Background: According to the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic the educational status of Slovak emigrants is most frequently at the level of secondary school, followed by those with university education. It is estimated that about a third of university graduates leave Slovakia every year. Many findings show that people with a high quality education have a tendency to leave their country to go to different European countries or countries outside Europe for reasons of work or a higher quality of life. This is the reason why countries which are experiencing problems with the brain drain phenomenon are very interested in its exploration. The relationship between economic motives and plans to leave the country of origin has been relatively well examined. However, the relationship between motives and plans to leave abroad and socio-psychosocial and health-related factors has not been sufficiently explored. The factors which affect this decision-making process and intention formation can be different and vary extensively. Relevant factors include social relationships and other social variables which influence migration intentions and behaviour. It has been shown that there are certain personal dispositions which seem to predispose a person to manifest a higher desire to leave or show more effort to leave. The findings showed that migrating persons differ from non-migrants in characteristics which include personality factors, personal attitudes as well as health-related behaviour and risk behaviour. Regarding risk behaviour among migrating people, there was a significantly higher level of regular smokers and a higher level of alcohol use than among non-migrating people. While respecting the findings that economic reasons are the strongest explanatory factors of migration in general, we were interested whether selected socio-psychological factors, as well as health- related factors, can help to understand why young people leave abroad. Objectives: The goal of this work is to explore the strength of a proposed model and explore the contribution of social support, health related behaviour, and personality factors in the planning of going abroad among university students. In other words, to examine whether perceived social support, depressive symptoms, health-related behaviour and personality factors are related to the plans among university students to leave their countries. Method: This study is based on the data obtained in the study SLiCE (Student Life Cohort in Europe) conducted online and it presents the analysis of data from the first wave of data collection in 2011 in cooperation with the universities in five European countries. The sample consisted of 2051 university students, of which 343 (16.6%) was from the Czech Republic, 862 (41.7%) from Lithuania, 114 (5.5%) from Hungary, 264 (12.8%) from Germany and 482 (23.3%) from Slovakia. Most of the students in the sample (85%) were students in the first year of university study and 70.2% of the sample were women. The mean age of the respondents was 20.67 with a standard deviation of 2.71. An online questionnaire was used to measure the variables. Plans to go abroad were identified by a single item measure assessing whether students had a plan to leave for abroad in the period of the following two years, social support was measured by MSPSS (The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support), depression was measured by the M-BDI (Modified version of the Beck Depression Inventory), alcohol use was measured by a screening tool for alcohol use AUDIT (The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test), smoking was measured by a question about the number of days during the previous month in which respondents smoked cigarettes and, finally, personality factors were measures by a shortened version of the Big Five questionnaire, the TIPI (Ten Item Personality measure). Due to the binary nature of the dependent variable, a binary logistic regression was used to explore the factors influencing plans to go abroad and allowed adjusting for country and gender. Results: Having a plan to leave abroad in the following two years was reported by 15.3% of respondents. The regression model in the first step included variables of social support, depression, risk behaviour (alcohol use and frequency of smoking) and explained 19.2% of variance in planning to leave abroad. In the next step, personality factors extraversion, openness to experience, conscientiousness, emotional lability and agreeableness were added. The model significantly improved in prediction effectiveness and this final regression model explained 21.5% of the variance in planning to leave abroad. The final regression model classified correctly 85.4% of cases. Perceived social support was found to be significantly related to whether students have or do not have a plan for going abroad. Social support from the family supports the plan not to go abroad, while social support from friends has the opposite effect and works as a factor which supports the plan to go abroad. Experiencing depressive symptoms is related to a higher probability that students plan to go abroad. Certain forms of risk behaviour can be related to planning to go abroad and our study showed that a higher use of alcohol or hazardous drinking is related to a higher probability of planning to go abroad, while alcohol dependence was related to the opposite phenomenon i.e. the probability of not planning to leave. Personality traits contributed to the explained variance in planning to go abroad, while in our sample a positive relationship between openness to experience and probability of planning to leave was found. Conclusion: The model has proven to be significant and relevant for explaining the variance in planning among university students to go abroad.. The explored socio-psychological factors, as well as health-related factors, were found to contribute to the explained variance in this. The findings indicate that socio-psychological and health-related factors are related to the plans to go abroad. In summary, students who perceive to have less support from their family, more support from their friends, experience more depressive symptoms, are more open to new experiences and report higher consumption of alcohol, but not alcohol dependence are more likely to have a plan to leave for abroad within a short timeframe. This research has several limitations, which have been acknowledged and discussed. Our findings and the effort to eliminate the limitations open relevant topics for further research.

Involuntary first admissions to a tertiary psychiatric hospital in cape town: a five year review of family referrals to psychology

Involuntary first admissions to a tertiary psychiatric hospital in cape town: a five year review of family referrals to psychology

Author(s): HB Thornton,D Thornton,S Baumann / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2015

Background: Valkenberg Hospital is one of three tertiary psychiatric hospitals in Cape Town – and has a catchment area population of over one million. It is an acute admissions hospital for adults (18-59years). Objectives: This article aimed to determine the psychosocial history of male patients involuntarily admitted to a high care psychiatric unit for the first time, and the needs and concerns of their families, to allow for the development of more appropriate services. Method: The psychology family clerking interviews (June 2007 – June 2012) of the Male High Care Unit (MHCU) of Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital’s first admission families (FAF) were reviewed. All of the patients in the chart review were severely psychotic and had not been able to be managed at a secondary hospital level, which had necessitated their referral to Valkenberg. Each clerking interview with the family lasted 1.5 to 2 hours, and was conducted by the Intern Clinical Psychologist placed at Male Admissions. All 225 available folders were reviewed and coded. Results: The majority of the patients were young (mode = 21), still living at home (80%), single (90%) and unemployed (65%).More than 80% of the men were given a working diagnosis of either Substance Induced Psychotic Disorder (SIPD: 46%), Schizophrenia (27%) or Bipolar (11%). There was a strong family history of severe mental illness (SMI: 49 %), psychiatric admissions (30%), depression (26%), suicide (18%), substance use (SUD in parent/s: 45%, siblings: 36%) and domestic violence (30%). Most families suspected that the patient had used drugs and police had had to be involved in at least 40% of the admissions. Despite nearly half of the patients expressing regret at their substance use, more than half the families reported that the patient had become aggressive and that at some stage they had feared them. The families most identified the patients’ admission as their greatest stressor. The second most identified greatest stressor was finances, with 40% of the families being in debt and more than a third of the families being either unable to or financially struggling to visit the patient while he was admitted. Conclusion: For many patients and their families, the times before and during the admission had been long and traumatic. Family intervention was necessary to provide more effective help-seeking methods, and to provide services that simultaneously looked at co-morbid substance use, depression and anxiety, suicidal thinking, social isolation and domestic violence, often in the background of poverty. It was highly recommended that the development of services aimed at treating dual diagnosis (severe mental illness or the risk thereof, and substance use disorder) be developed and prioritised.

Efficacy of group CBT Vs group information and support in relapse and recurrence of depression in adults

Efficacy of group CBT Vs group information and support in relapse and recurrence of depression in adults

Author(s): Aleksandra Kelly,Tony Cassidy / Language(s): English Issue: 5/2016

This study aimed to analyse the rates and length of time to relapse and/or recurrence of depression in individuals who attended either Group CBT or Group Information and Support in an adult secondary mental health setting in Ireland. The present study centred on the analysis of previously collected data from groups running between 2005 and 2010 and on the retrospective file review. It formed part of a larger scale research study conducted by the Principal Clinical Psychologist evaluating the effectiveness of CBT for depression and bipolar disorder. The study was quantitative in nature and incorporated qualitative elements (i.e. Clients’ and Practitioners’ description of the severity of the depressive episodes) which were converted into quantifiable categories. Participants comprised of two groups: Treatment I (Group CBT) including participants who attended 8 or 12 sessions of manualised Group CBT and a comparison sample: Treatment II (Group Information and Support) comprised of participants who attended 12 sessions of group information and support. Based on survival analysis, no significant difference was found in effectiveness for Group CBT and Group Information and Support in preventing and/or decreasing the number and the length of time to relapse and/or recurrence of depression in this client group. Findings, clinical implications, methodological limitations and future research directions were also discussed.

The drug problem: ten suggestions from a psychiatrist in prison

The drug problem: ten suggestions from a psychiatrist in prison

Author(s): Samuel A. Nigro / Language(s): English Issue: Sp. Iss. 1/2015

Drugs and crime are destroying America. There are over two million incarcerated young men and women (more than in the military). Almost all of their crimes are related to drug abuse beginning about 13 years of age. The epidemic of drug abuse at early ages is based on the failure of families, schools and the communication industry to immunize youths against the contagion of drug abuse and the related rage against our culture which created them. There is one drug abuse arrest every 20 seconds. The growing acceptance of marihuana seems counterproductive. Basically, people want to escape from the ragecreating trends of life. Alcohol and drugs, including marihuana, are easy, but ineffective, ways of doing so. A major overlooked question is “Why? What is our culture doing to make people, beginning in their early puberty, to want to “turn off” rather than eagerly engage in a productive life?” Even those who are well off? And what can we do about it?

Author(s): Fuad Imširović / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 10/2024

FROM PSYCHOPATHY TO EXPEDIENCY: UNRAVELLING THE MEDIATING ROLES OF ORGANISATIONAL CYNICISM AND MORAL DISENGAGEMENT IN LEADERSHIP DYNAMICS

FROM PSYCHOPATHY TO EXPEDIENCY: UNRAVELLING THE MEDIATING ROLES OF ORGANISATIONAL CYNICISM AND MORAL DISENGAGEMENT IN LEADERSHIP DYNAMICS

Author(s): Aneu Yulianeu,Faizal Wihuda,Arief Adhy Kurniawan / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2024

The research conducted is grounded on the principles of social exchange (SET), social cognitive theory (SCT), and conservation of resources theories (COR). These theories enabled us to comprehend the indirect correlation between leader psychopathy and employee expediency. To validate our research, we surveyed three waves, collecting information from 282 hotel employees in Indonesia. The PLS-SEM technique was used to test the hypotheses. The results demonstrated evidence that leader psychopathy had a positive direct and indirect effect on employee expediency through organisational cynicism and moral disengagement. We make novel theoretical, empirical, and practical contributions by explaining why leader psychopathy affects employee expediency. This study is one of the first to integrate leader psychopathy, organisational cynicism, moral disengagement, and employee expediency into a single theoretical model.

Mental health issues, needs, and challenges faced by children and adolescents during public health emergencies: a study based on the perspective of educators

Mental health issues, needs, and challenges faced by children and adolescents during public health emergencies: a study based on the perspective of educators

Author(s): Renata Glavak Tkalić,Marina Kotrla Topić / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

Public health emergencies, including catastrophic events such as pandemics and natural disasters, as well as the rise of diseases caused by high-threat pathogens result in specific and often critically threatening situations (WHO, 2023). This study aimed to examine the perception of educators (e.g., teachers and trainers) in Croatia regarding the mental health issues, needs, and challenges faced by children and adolescents during public health emergencies, as well as the risk and protective factors associated with mental health issues. Data was collected using two focus groups that included a total of 12 educators (e.g., teachers, sports trainers, kindergarten teachers, and so on) who work with children and adolescents. The results were analysed using thematic analyses and showed that the symptoms observed most often in children were fear, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, sleep problems, behavioural problems, and concentration problems. Educators also provided insights into the broader context in which these symptoms were evident and highlighted their personal need for additional support and education. Furthermore, they listed various protective and risk factors that, in their opinion, could influence the coping abilities of children faced with a crisis. These findings are important for the creation of programmes that aim to protect the mental health of children during and after public emergencies, as well as to train those working with children in order to help them recognise the needs of children and adolescents and find ways of providing help.

Sindrom sagorijevanja kod studenata nastavničkih studija u STEM područjima

Sindrom sagorijevanja kod studenata nastavničkih studija u STEM područjima

Author(s): Branimir Čorić,Anna Alajbeg / Language(s): English,Croatian Issue: 2/2024

The aim of the study was to investigate the occurrence of burnout syndrome in student teachers in STEM subjects at the Faculty of Science in Split. The study sample consisted of 85 students from different teacher education programmes, of which 59 were female and 26 male. The research instrument used was a questionnaire containing the Maslach Burnout Inventory - Student Survey (MBI-SS) scale, which uses 16 items to examine the occurrence of burnout syndrome in students. A high level of burnout was observed in 25% of the respondents on the Emotional Exhaustion subscale, as well as in 19% of the respondents on the Cynicism subscale and in 27% of the respondents on the Academic Self-Efficacy subscale. Statistical analysis showed that there were no significant differences in the occurrence of burnout in relation to gender and type of study, while for certain items, there was a statistically significant difference in relation to the year of study. Considering the Academic Self-Efficacy subscale, statistically significant differences were observed between the biology-chemistry and computer science, as well as biologychemistry and computer science-technics degree programmes. The study found that student teachers at the Faculty of Science in Split have a moderate level of burnout, indicating the need to introduce preventive programmes to improve the psychological well-being of these students to better equip them for their future careers in the teaching profession.

An end-of-life frontier. Palliative care, ‘good accompaniment’ and doctor-patient relationship in light of a dialogical (and restorative) perspective

Author(s): Federico Reggio / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

The essay proposes a philosophical-legal reflection dedicated to the end of life, with particular reference to the theme of palliative care and the so-called ‘accompaniment to death’, inscribed within the doctor-patient relationship, and its further possible articulations. This profile of investigation is read, in particular, through the gaze of the perspectives and methodologies of the search for consensual solutions and their singularity as instruments aimed at fostering an authentic dialogue between the parties. The considerations that follow have matured, in this regard, in the context of a discussion with medical personnel working in the oncological field and with oncological patients. Their underlying ethical perspective assumes a dialogical character, informed also by restorative ethics.

L’ applicazione delle Prospettive Temporali di Philip Zimbardo e John Boyd nel Processo Negoziale

L’ applicazione delle Prospettive Temporali di Philip Zimbardo e John Boyd nel Processo Negoziale

Author(s): Massimo Antonazzi / Language(s): Italian Issue: 1/2023

With this contribution we try to analyze the influence that modern scientific results in the field of psychology of the time can determine in negotiation strategies. Starting from the assumption that the evolutionary process of the negotiation tool has always been characterized by the element of interdisciplinarity, with this paper we propose to use the results of the studies of Philip Zimbardo and John Boyd in the strategic phase of the negotiation process as a support for the construction of negotiating profiles of our partners with particular attention to the choice of whether or not to use certain temporal tactics. In the first part of the work, we will analyze how the science of negotiation usually applies the scientific results of other disciplines to remain current and performing and then move on to the analysis of the work of Zimbardo and Boyd in relation to temporal perspectives.

W zwierciadle wygnania, czyli Ja z jednej i Ja z drugiej strony naprawdę strasznej wody

Author(s): Adam Lipszyc / Language(s): Polish Issue: 4/2024

This article deals with derangement of identity caused by the experience of migration. First, the author proposes a number of psychoanalytical conceptions (the uncanny, the mirror self-reflection, the doppelgänger) that could constitute a point of departure for a suitable argument. Next, he focuses on an analysis of four films (“House of Sand and Fog”, “Incendies”, “His House”, “The Babysitter”), which depict the migration experience from various angles. In doing so, he extracts recurring motifs of mirror reflections and the aquatic element, which turn out to be a key to the image of identity split by dislocation and capable of communication with itself and the surrounding only under the condition of recognising the fundamental aporias of its conditio. The author devotes particularly vast attention to the manner in which this derangement is manifested in parent-child relations.

BETWEEN LIKES AND ANXIETY: UNDERSTANDING INSTAGRAM ADDICTION'S ROLE IN APPEARANCE CONCERNS

Author(s): Marius Marici,Remus Runcan / Language(s): English Issue: 21/2024

Intense use of Instagram and comparable social media networks can have adverse effects on an individual's psychological health and overall wellness. This research aimed to explore the mediating role of addiction to Instagram in the relationship between the duration of Instagram use and anxiety over physical appearance. A total of 203 young adults, hailing from Suceava County in Romania and aged between 19 and 23 years old (mean age = 20.7, standard deviation = 0.86), responded to an online self-report questionnaire. The study utilized the Physical Appearance State and Traits Anxiety Scale, Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale, along with specific scales for Instagram Feed Addiction (IFA) and Instagram Stories Addiction (ISA). Using mediation in Jamovi, findings revealed that addiction to Instagram and to its Feed feature act as mediators in the link between average daily time spent on Instagram and anxiety related to physical appearance traits. However, addiction to Instagram Stories did not show a significant mediating effect. This research highlights the connection between Instagram addiction and concerns over appearance, underscoring the importance of management of screen time and the role of parental guidance in early education for prevention.

THE IMPACT OF GROUP STATUS ON SELF-IMAGE AND ANXIETY IN PREADOLESCENCE

Author(s): Svetlana Tolstaia,Crina-Florica Crețu / Language(s): English Issue: 6/2023

During preadolescence years, the needs of socialization and affiliation are as strong as the needs for self-esteem and social status. The social group provides valuable opportunities for preadolescents to better know themselves, efficient management of their emotions, and control their behavior. However, the challenges in this stage are many. Physical and psychological changes amplify their sense of being different from others, even inadequate. Anxiety in this period is a frequent emotional state, having consequences on multiple levels: cognitive, social, academic. As they interact with others, they improve their perspective on themselves, the world, and life in general.
