Author(s): Triana Arias Abelaira,Belén Mozo Redondo / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2022

Nowadays, the acquisition of a high level of digital competence has become a real need for professional development in any field. Future graduates in Labour Relations and Human Resources should achieve an advanced level of this skill. The main aim of this research is to determine the level of acquisition of digital competence in Labour Relations and Human Resources students. The second purpose is to check whether there is a link between gender and digital competence achievement. This paper is based on the application of a questionnaire on digital competences which is organized around 5 aspects, and mainly based on the basis of Likert-type scale questions. The data collected belong to 26 undergraduates studying at the third year of Degree in Labour Relations and Human Resources at the University of Extremadura. The results obtained show that a large majority of students (65.4%) have an advanced level of digital competence, nevertheless, it would be advisable for the rest to achieve the same level before they graduate and exercise their profession. The second important conclusion is that the level of acquisition of digital competence is not conditioned by gender aspects.

The unregulated legal status of the speech and language therapy profession and speech and language therapy as an independent scientific discipline are reasons for significant differences in the way SLTs are educated in Poland. In order to find out the opinions of students and graduates of SLT studies (working in the profession) on academic education, the survey was conducted with 87 participants. Conducting the survey in the conditions of a pandemic situation also made it possible to assess distance forms of teaching and revealed disproportions in the level of satisfaction with practical and theoretical courses conducted in this form. The collected opinions form the basis for the reflections undertaken in the article on SLT and the possible and necessary changes in the system of training future SLTs.

Z czasem nawiązano jednak kontakty międzynarodowe wykraczające poza oficjalne porozumienia, często na bazie współpracy z okresu międzywojennego, a niekiedy dzięki wspólnym zainteresowaniom uczonych z obu krajów.

Public sector salary policy aims at making the salary system more transparent and keeping it at the same level in different public authorities and services. In practice, governing bodies use salary policy to demonstrate their priorities in managing the entire public sector. Such an approach frequently carries particular discriminatory features. The paper aims at presenting the system of determining the salaries of employees in public authorities and public services and giving an overview of the currently applicable legal framework in this regard. Considering the size of the public sector, a salary analysis was made on a sample of the salaries of university teaching personnel, doctors and judges. The criteria for selecting the jobs in question in the sample are the features common to each profession: independence in decision-making and work as set by the legal framework, a clear hierarchy of advancement in the profession, budget financed salaries and external evaluation related to potential advancement within the system. For each group of the aforesaid categories of employees, the similarities and differences in the salary determination system are shown. Accordingly, the extent to which the principle of equal pay for equal work is respected as stipulated by the provisions of the Labour Law, as well as potentially discriminatory elements in the determining salaries system within the public sector are established.

Социально-психологическая адаптация студентов – представителей коренных малочисленных народов Севера, Сибири и Дальнего Востока к колледжу в новой социокультурной среде: теоретическая модель

Author(s): Anastasiya Vladimirovna Miklyaeva,Julia S. Pezhemskaya,Valeriya V. Khoroshih,Irina A. Baeva / Language(s): Russian Issue: 6/2022

Introduction. The study examines the psychological, academic, social and cultural adaptation of indigenous students to a vocational school environment with a focus on representatives of indigenous peoples from the North, Siberia and the Far East. The purpose of the research is to model the processes of students’ socio-psychological adaptation to vocational college in a new socio-cultural environment. Materials and Methods. The systematic scholarly literature review was conducted in 2022 using the following search engines and electronic bibliographic databases: Google Scholar, Scopus, RSCI, and ERIC. The analysis included Russian and English language articles published between 2000 and 2022 reporting the results of the original empirical research on the problem of student adjustment to college in a changing socio-cultural environment. Of the 975 articles selected for systematic analysis, 68 sources met the search criteria. Results. A systematic literature review enabled us to identify two groups of social psychological resources for student adaptation to college in the new sociocultural environment: individual resources (individual psychological and academic) and environmental resources (including educational environment within the college and system of interpersonal relations). Based on the results of the systematic review, a theoretical model of the socio-psychological adjustment of the students (representatives of indigenous minorities of the North, Siberia and the Far East) to the vocational education institution in the new socio-cultural environment, which describes the procedural and structural elements of the adjustment process, as well as the interplay of personal, meso- and macro-environmental adaptation resources is proposed. Conclusions. The theoretical adaptation model of Students from Indigenous Minorities of the North, Siberia students, created on the basis of a systematic analysis of the literature, makes it possible to develop on its basis the technology for assessing the adaptation resources of the students of the CIS and DV and the measures of psychological, educational and social support for students belonging to the risk group, to the development of programs to prevent academic mismatch and student dropout. The prospects of the study include empirical verification of the proposed model.

Author(s): Iryna Viktorovna Boiko / Language(s): Russian Issue: 41/2022

The Russian emigration in Manchuria at the beginning of the 20th century represents a very special history. The destinies of the Russian emigrants reflected the harsh circumstances of the civil war and collectivization, Japanese occupation of Manchuria in 1931, followed by the Japanese capitulation, which ended the WWII. The article is aimed on the analysis of the Russian emigrants societal position in Machukuo, specified for the Russian students of the Japanese university Kenkoku. The article highlights several waves of the Russian emigration to Manchukuo, each as distinctive by its reasons and social composition. Pursuing the multicultural composition of the new state Manchukuo, the Japanese policy was just loyal towards the Russian immigrants, which provided them the equal rights with the other nationalities at the access to higher education. The “National Building University” — Kenkoky, which was founded in 1938 and aimed on training the higher state administrative personnel, was open for the various nationalities, including Russians. The destinies of the Russian alumni of the Kenkoku university when they returned to the motherland after the Japanese capitulation was not an easy. Substantial reminiscences of the witnesses, Russian and non-Russian historic publications, personal archived documents are the basis for the given research. The Manchukuo short history in general and the history of the higher education there in particular have been occupying an increasing research interest all over the world. Distinctively, this issue remains unexplored in Russia. The article outcomes and materials are useful for the historians, engaged into the study of the Russian emigration to Manchuria and residence of the emigrants during the Manchukuo history. (How) Can Machine Learning Support Teaching Staff in a Virtual Collaborative Learning Environment?

Author(s): Arne Böhmer,Hannes Schubert,Maximilian Musch,Sebastian Schmidt / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

Purpose: Supervising roles within virtual collaborative learning (VCL) environments face many different challenges and are often having difficulties keeping an eye on everything and comprehending every participant’s or group’s workflow. To help supervisors with problems like that we developed a software prototype to support their daily workflow and overcome the mentioned challenges. Study design/methodology/approach: This study used a design science research approach to investigate how learning analytics might be able to support teaching staff in VCL settings. Previous studies demonstrated that this approach is very well suited to derive design guidelines for such software artifacts. Initially, a qualitative interview series with four experienced tutors was carried out to get an in-depth understanding of the challenges and tasks teaching staff typically faces in VCL environments. The interview material was systematically analysed to acquire the underlying software requirements. These were then combined with existing knowledge about support software of similar use cases to create a first prototype, primarily based on a supervised machine learning model that classifies online messages sent within the teams. Findings: The software tool we have developed has shown that machine learning processes can indeed be used to support teaching staff in VCL environments. The tool achieves satisfactory classification performance in categorizing chat messages. It could therefore be demonstrated that it is possible to classify chat messages using a software tool. The interviews conducted revealed a particular interest in the statistical evaluations of group activities in Microsoft Teams. This was said to save a lot of time in the subsequent evaluation of the groups. The interviewed eTutors also expressed an interest in receiving private information on the development of possible conflicts within groups. The interest of the interviewed supervisors was very high and additional interviews could lead to further possible feature ideas. In general, the evaluative interviews resulted in positive feedback regarding how our prototype supported eTutors during their work. Originality/value: In current times, spatially distributed and asynchronous education plays a bigger role than ever before. VCL environments are useful tools to overcome these challenges of time and space. However, unlike research on conversational agents or automated feedback systems, the focus of this work is not on the communication interface between software and users or the exclusively quantitative analysis of messages. The goal is to evaluate the content of sent messages within VCL environments using the six defined categories to gain a better qualitative understanding of the teams’ collaboration and its workflow.

Challenges of University-Industry Cooperation in Albania

Author(s): Ketrina Mijo Çabiri,Ermira Qosja / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

Purpose: Albanian universities have a rigid experience, especially in their effort to become competitive and respond to market demands. Today, it is a necessity for Albanian universities to become dynamic academic units, to go on an entrepreneurial path and to affect innovation in the region. This paper aims to measure the perception of university management staff regarding the challenges and barriers that appear in university-industry cooperation. It sheds light on the identification of factors that motivate the academic staff toward such cooperation Study design/methodology/approach: This paper implies a qualitative-based methodology and relies on the methods used by the ERASMUS + CBHE ‘KALCEA’ project. Questionnaires used on KALCEA Project collect data from universities, businesses and research centres. The questionnaires pose a set of standard questions as well as a set of tailored questions for each of the three categories. The high management staff of universities completed the questionnaire in June-July 2022. From 39 universities and higher education colleges established in Albania, the questionnaire was sent to 22 institutions and received answers from 16. Respondents are positions of rector/vice-rector/dean. Findings: One of the significant challenges of the current high education system is demonstrating the capacity to adapt to societal changes and its emerging economic demands. Nowadays, in higher education institutions in Albania, the biggest challenges are internationalisation, connection with industry, commercialisation of knowledge and academic entrepreneurship. Originality/value: Findings of the paper have interest for universities, industry, and politicians in Albania. They go in line and add value to the new Albanian law on HEIs (2015), which provides more autonomy to Departments and poses a challenge for them to cooperate with industry and act entrepreneurially.

‘ascendere a sommi gradi … cumular infinite ricchezze’/ ‘ascending to great heights ... cumulating infinite riches’. Legal education and professional careers in the State of Milan (16th–18th century)

Author(s): Daniela Buccomino / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

The proposed contribution aims to fill some historiographical gaps on the legal formation of the 'power elite' of the State of Milan in the Modern Age in light of the changing cultural and institutional context. The main focus of the research, which is part of broader research on the history of the University, is the relationship between the training of Milanese graduates in law at the Alma Ticinensis Universitas and the careers they pursued within the magistracies and judicial institutions at the territorial level. This is also in consideration of the role played by jurists in Lombard society (16th-18th centuries). Through a series of concrete cases of ruling families, an attempt will be made to answer specific questions, such as the value of the doctoratus obtained at the Studium Publicum of the State of Milan and the role of the social class for the conferment of certain public offices and the performance of specific professions.

The purpose of this research is to indicate pre-service primary school teachers’ competence related to science and pseudoscience distinction and to determine whether it differs in terms of gender and class level variables. In this research, the scanning model, one of the quantitative research models was utilized. The sampling of the research consisted of 230 pre-service primary teachers enrolled at the department of Primary Education in the Faculty of Education at a state university in the Black Sea region of Turkey in 2019-2020 academic year. “The Science-Pseudoscience Distinction Scale”, which was adapted to Turkish by Kirman Çetinkaya, Laçin Şimşek, and Çalışkan was utilized to gather data. Because data were not normally distributed, they were analyzed in terms of both sub-dimension and overall scale by using Mann Whitney U Test for the comparisons of a different group and the Kruskal Wallis H Test for more than two groups. According to the findings of the research, it was detected that pre-service primary teachers had a high level of competence in making a distinction between science and pseudoscience. There was a significant difference in favor of men between pre-service primary teachers’ gender variable and science-pseudoscience distinction. Besides, there was a significant difference in favor of the 2nd grades between pre-service primary teachers’ class level variable and science-pseudoscience distinction. Especially, 2nd grades in the making a distinction between science and pseudoscience had higher averages than the other grade levels.
