Eesti keelest pikas perspektiivis - Keele- ja identiteedipoliitiline analüüs

Author(s): Martin Ehala / Language(s): Estonian Issue: 1-2/2019

The main trends over the last couple of decades indicate that language ecological conditions have changed radically in Estonia. After a long period of being a country of emigration, Estonia has become attractive to immigration again. Many are returnees, but the second largest group of immigrants comes from Russia and Ukraine. As Estonia needs immigration due to low birth rates and an ageing population, the new immigrants set a new challenge to Estonia’s ability to integrate its Russian-speaking minority, not to mention others from very different backgrounds. To cope with this challenge, the Estonian language and identity politics need first to reject the ultra-liberal ideology that celebrates diversity to the extent that no pressure to integrate with the host society is put on the immigrants. Second, to avoid further segregation of the Russian-speaking minority, the historically parallel Estonian and Russian language school systems need to be integrated into one with Estonian as the language of instruction, but with a wide support for Russian speaking students, including the use of Russian to teach their mother tongue, literature and cultural history. Further, Estonian identity politics should aim to promote the understanding that a person may successfully have two or even more linguistic identities without one necessarily replacing another. As to the internationalisation of higher education, Estonian universities need to find a working balance between using Estonian and English in teaching and research. As Estonia needs smart immigration, the best way to promote this is to provide international students with a working knowledge of the Estonian language and society by their graduation with a possibility to stay and work in Estonia.

FACTEURS FAMILIAUX ET « DEVENIR » DES ADOLESCENT-E-S DESCOLARISE-E-S : ÉTAT DES LIEUX ET DÉTERMINANTS DANS LA COMMUNE DE TCHAOUROU (BÉNIN)

Author(s): Lucien Médard DAHOUE,Judicaël Alladatin / Language(s): French Issue: 1/2022

The situation of unschooled teenagers in the labor market seems particularly worrisome. This study is related to concerns about the social integration of adolescents and aims to identify the determinants of the future of out-of-school adolescents in the commune of Tchaourou. It specifically addresses, through a nested multinomial logit regression, two aspects of the “future” of adolescents out of-school: economic activity and future plans. The results show that the size of the household of residence and the financial support granted by parents/guardians are the key factors in the exercise of an income-generating activity by out-of-school adolescents. The future of adolescents out-of-school are significantly influenced by the relationship with the head of the household, the standard of living of the household and the type of household.

A Review of Mortality Analyses and Life Safety in an Indian Context

Author(s): B.H.S. Thimmappa / Language(s): English Issue: 6/2022

This discussion paper on death presents an analysis of the causes of irretrievable mortality in the Indian context. It traces the local-to-global connection by depicting the current scenario and future perspectives. It deals with various aspects of death to provide a broader overview and outlines the various actions required to improve it. Analysis of the mortality data illustrates the inadequacy of present efforts to address the problem of death due to avoidable causes. A better understanding of the relationship between a vast number of unnatural deaths and the personal safety and healthcare precautions as they are practiced will lead us to conclude that different activities performed with a better presence of mind can extend the span of human existence in general. Analyses through intensive scientific research and careful examination through cross-pollination of inspiring ideas, proper perspectives, and a positive orientation to imagine a better future will enable people to fulfill what they want and need in their diverse contexts. The retrospective analysis of the data indicates that the mortality rate can be reduced by simple safety measures while traveling through the changing political landscape and achieving long-term sustainable development. Living a healthy lifestyle and following standard operating procedures during a pandemic like COVID-19 could make a difference in the lives of millions as health and safety remain primary concerns.

Aggression is one of those qualities. The studied students answered two questionnaires, one containing 75 questions and the other 28. The analysis of the data shows that most of the students do not feel respected enough and consider that their rights are violated, but they tend not to respect and/or circumvent the rules, to “maneuver” and tolerate irresponsible behavior. A large number of students have aggressive attitudes and tend to hide them, but in general they are tense, unbalanced.
