Analysis of the liquids composition by the sound produced by their heating

Author(s): Assen Pashov,Grigori Matein / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2021

When a liquid is heated and the power of the heater is high enough (about 1MW/m2), bubbles are formed at the surface of the heater. Their expansion and collapse are the source of a specific sound, known to everybody who uses a kettle to prepare water for tea or coffee. The main goal of this study is to investigate whether it is possible to judge about the composition of the heated liquid by this sound. A specialized experimental set up is assembled and a systematic study of all known factors, influencing the sound is carried out. It is found out that the most crucial parts of the set up are the container for the liquids and the heater. They are discussed in detail and considerations for further improvements are given. It is demonstrated that with the present apparatus it is possible to detect changes in the sound spectrum when changing the composition of the liquid. For example, one can distinguish between pure water and water with less than 0.1% of ethanol. Along with admixtures of different alcohols, experiments with a soap solution in water and carbonated water are performed.

Calculation Method for Determining the Gas Flow Rate Needed for Liquid Removal from the Bottom of the Wellbore

Author(s): Miel Hofmann,Sudad Al-Obaidi,Ivan P. Kamensky / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2021

As a result of flooding and accumulations of liquid at the bottom holes, the operating conditions of gas wells become complicated, so that they end up self-squeezing and losing of gas production. A method is proposed for determining the technological parameters of operation of the gas wells with the purpose of removing liquid from the bottom of the wells. Data from the gas dynamics and special studies were used to develop this method, which has been tested on one of the oil and gas condensate fields. It offers the possibility to increase the accuracy of the information provided by the fund and to ensure that the production wells are operated as efficiently as possible with the use of this method. In the case of liquid accumulation in the well that is insignificant, or when water is present in the well, the technique is beneficial in that it allows determining the technological parameters of well operation and ensuring the removal of the liquid from the bottom of the well.

Advanced Formatting of Delimited Big Data with Python

Advanced Formatting of Delimited Big Data with Python

Author(s): Ivan Drankov,Yassen Gorbounov / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2020

With the growing demand for big data applications, the requirements for data processing tools are constantly increasing. Most of the problems associated with big data are size, inaccurate data, irrelevant data fields, inconsistent formatting, duplicate data, etc., and most of the conventional tools are not designed for big workloads. Formatting large amounts of data can lead to lots of problems while processing it. Although this data is usually delimited, the large volume makes the use of visual software inapplicable to run on limited data. On the other hand, the use of regular expressions inherent to many programming languages such as Perl or tools like grep (global regular expression print) is characterized by certain complexity and requires in-depth knowledge, thus limiting the scope of their application. This article offers a method for working with large amounts of data, developed using the Python programming language. The considered method has very good flexibility allowing easy configuration via XML file and achieving a high degree of automation.

Teaching Database Design and the Importance of Integrity

Teaching Database Design and the Importance of Integrity

Author(s): Peter Peinl / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2020

The costs to correct mistakes made in the early phases of database projects often rise exponentially with the number of phases between detection and correction. Therefore an adequate preparation of beginners as part of their university education, practically and conceptually, is able to avoid many mistakes. This paper outlines a systematic classroom approach to guide through the design of a database including faithful, rule based translation into an equivalent relational schema and its implementation using the SQL language. Experiences from teaching that course in a real classroom are compared to those made in spring/summer 2020, when the course had to be taught in a virtual classroom because of the Corona pandemic.

A heuristic algorithm based on hydrophobic amino acids sequences in HP protein folding problem

Author(s): Metodi Traykov,Slav Angelov / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2020

The protein structure prediction is of massive significance because the properties of the proteins are critically determined by their structures. The protein structure prediction problem (Protein Folding Problem) is to predict the compact three-dimensional structure of a protein based on its amino acid sequence. Therefore, the protein folding problem is a computationally challenging problem. In this article, we will study the behavior of heuristic algorithm for protein folding problem, above sequences of hydrophobic amino acids only. The article is for educational purposes.

Interactive Cultural Heritage Presentation in AR

Interactive Cultural Heritage Presentation in AR

Author(s): Zlatka Uzunova,Angel Pashev,Pavlena Yordanova,Alexander Dedelyanov,Stoyan Maleshkov / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2020

The passive presentation of cultural heritage using Augmented Reality (AR) alone is impressive but does not take full advantage of the great potential provided by this technology. Providing the user with the ability to also interact with the virtual objects retains the user’s attention for a longer period of time. In this way allowing more knowledge about the artifact to be gained, while at the same time creating a lasting impression of the experience. This paper presents our approach to creating rich interactive experiences with quality content, through which cultural heritage artifacts can be explored so that the user can learn more about them in an engaging way.

Data Quality Assessment of Medical Insurance Claims

Data Quality Assessment of Medical Insurance Claims

Author(s): Prachiti Aras,Guanglan Zhang,Reza Rawassizadeh,Irena Vodenska,Lou Chitkushev / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2020

High quality data lay a solid foundation for downstream research. Data quality assessment (DQA) is a necessary yet challenging step in data analytics projects involving coded administrative health data. Eight rules were established based on the presence of age and gender incompatible diagnosis. Using a rule-based method, we assessed data quality of a large medical insurance claim database, the Truven Health Analytics MarketScan Database. DQA results were reported based on nine years of inpatient claim data (Y2006-2014) and three years of outpatient data (Y2006, 2010, and 2014). In both inpatient and outpatient data, the most prevalent data issues are related to newborn conditions. Among the over 2.8 million inpatient records with newborn specific conditions, more than 22% belong to patients who are not newborn. The corresponding error rate in outpatient data is around 2%. Among the over 4 million inpatient maternal records, around 6% contain newborn specific codes. It was observed that the error rates are lower in outpatient data across the board and different patterns of data quality issues are associated with inpatient vs. outpatient records. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that systematically assesses the data quality of MarketScan databases.

JGRAMS: Just-in-time Grading for Effective Feedback

JGRAMS: Just-in-time Grading for Effective Feedback

Author(s): Eric Braude,Nicole Tebaldi,Pedro Valeriev Cartaxo Brussarski,Sumesh Poduval,Kathleen Park / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2020

JGRAMS (Just-in-time Grading Messages) is a system designed to promote quality in student papers and reports, and to improve efficiency in grading. It does this by providing students with a Word template for the assignment, which contains rubrics as structured comments called JGRAMs, located with specific sections of the template. The idea is to make grading rubrics very evident to the student, who is thus more likely to pay attention to the qualities desired. Global JGRAMs are used as well. The instructor inserts as many such comment-rubrics into the document template as they wish, at any location, with whatever weight they desire. Once the student submits the paper, the grader provides feedback and grades within each JGRAM. Grading is easier and less time-consuming because each rubric, the student's corresponding work, the grade for that rubric, and the feedback are co-located. JGRAMS handles everything else automatically, including weight rationalization and summation.

Teaching Data Science By History: Kepler's Laws of Planetary Motion and Generalized Linear Models

Teaching Data Science By History: Kepler's Laws of Planetary Motion and Generalized Linear Models

Author(s): Eugene Pinsky / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2020

Teaching data science is challenging: it is a multi- disciplinary subject that requires solid mathematical background. There are many models and approaches to consider. It is important, in our view, to present a unified approach to teaching this subject. We believe that one of the most effective ways to do so is to present historical examples. An interesting historical example that explains Generalized Linear Models in prediction is the quest by the German astronomer, Johann Kepler, at the beginning of the 17-th century to and a unifying law explaining the motion of the planets in our Solar system.

Bitcoin Price Prediction using Transfer Learning on Financial Micro-blogs

Author(s): Jovan Davchev,Kostadin Mishev,Irena Vodenska,Lubomir Chitkushev,Dimitar Trajanov / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2020

We present a methodology for predicting the price of Bitcoin using Twitter data and historical Bitcoin prices. Bitcoin is the largest cryptocurrency that, in terms of market capitalization, represents over 110 billion dollars. The news volume is rapidly growing, and Twitter is increasingly used as a news source influencing purchase decisions by informing users of the currency and its popularity. Using modern Natural Language Processing models for transfer learning, we analyze tweets’ meaning and calculate sentiment using the NLP transformers. We combine the daily historical Bitcoin price data with the daily sentiment and predict the next day’s price using auto-regressive models for time-series forecasting. The results show that modern approaches for sentiment analysis, time-series forecasting, and transfer-learning are applicable for predicting Bitcoin price when we include sentiment extracted from financial micro-blogs as input. The results show improvement when compared to the old approaches using only historical price data. Additionally, we show that the NLP models based on transfer-learning methodologies improve the efficiency in sentiment extraction in financial micro-blogs compared to standard sentiment extraction methods.

Представяне на понятието конично сечение с компютър

Author(s): Petya Asenova,Marin Marinov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 4/2021

The article discusses the problem of introducing and constructing mathematical concepts using a computer. The Wolfram Mathematica 12 symbolic calculation system is used at each stage of the complex spiral process to form the notion of conic section and the related concepts of focus, directrix and eccentricity. The nature of these notions implies the use of appropriate animations, 3D graphics and symbolic calculations. Our vision of the process of formation of mathematical concepts is presented. The notions ellipse, parabola and hyperbola are defined as the intersection of a conical surface with a plane not containing the vertex of the conical surface. The conical section is represented as a geometric location of points on the plane for which the ratio of the distance to the focus to the distance to the directrix is a constant value. The lines of hyperbola and ellipse are determined by their foci. The equivalence of different definitions for conical sections is commented.

Learning Analytics Tool for Bulgarian School Education

Author(s): Silvia Gaftandzhieva,Rositsa Doneva,George Pashev,Mariya Docheva / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2021

Nowadays, schools use many information systems to automate their activities for different stakeholders’ groups – learning management systems, student diary, library systems, digital repositories, financial management and accounting systems, document processing systems, etc. The huge amount of data generated by the users of these systems, led to increased interest in the collection and analysis of data to encourage students to achieve higher results, teachers to provide personalized support and school managers to make data-driven decisions at all levels of school, and stimulates research into the application of Learning Analytics (LA) in schools. The paper presents a LA model and a software prototype of the LA tool designed for the needs of Bulgarian school education from the perspective of different stakeholder groups (students, teachers, class teachers, parents, school managers, inspectors from evaluation agencies),aiming to improve school methods of approaching and analyzing learning data. The tool allows stakeholders to track data for students’ learning or training for different purposes, e.g. monitoring, analysis, forecast, intervention, recommendations, etc., but finally to improve the quality of learning and teaching processes. Research and experiments with the model and the LA tool under consideration are conducted based on the information infrastructure of a typical Bulgarian school.

За природата на математиката и за математиката в природата –една приказка за симетрията с продължение за малки и големи

Author(s): Cvetelin Andreev / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 4/2021

The paper describes activities for developing the notion of symmetries. The activities were performed by a group of children between the ages of 5 and 9and a parent of two of them. Through play and active work the group explores symmetries in sports, architecture, biology, language, music and mathematics. The activities were carried out outdoors in nature. Ideas for complementary activities with computers are presented. As a result the children demonstrate the ability to recognize symmetries in areas and situations different from the ones set in the activities they performed. This proves the main thesis of the paper: the nature of mathematics can be captured successfully in an informal environment at any age.
