Computational analysis of the messenger RNA variants encoding two isoforms of the high-mobility group box 1 protein

Author(s): Luchezar Karagyozov,Jordana Todorova / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2021

High-mobility group box 1 protein (HMGB1) is a multifunctional nonhistone chromosomal protein. This widespread nuclear protein has a dual function-in the nucleus - it binds DNA and participates in practically all DNA-dependent processes. On the other hand, the protein plays an important role in the extracellular matrix as an “alarmin”, which interacts with certain receptors and stimulates biochemical pathways, associated with carcinogenesis and metastasis. HMGB1 is a critical damage-associated molecular pattern molecule, has been implicated in several inflammatory diseases and cancer types. This universality makes it an attractive target for innovative therapeutic strategies in the treatment of various diseases. The updated database for the HMGB1 gene, encoding the high-mobility group box 1 protein, was used for computational analysis of the annotated mRNA splice variants. Results showed that five of the splice variants encode an HMGB1 protein, containing 215 amino acid residues. However, two of the splice variants encode a shorter HMGB1 protein with 158 residues. Presently, the existence of a shorter HMGB1 protein is not registered in the protein databanks. This inconsistency is not yet resolved.

Author(s): Anteneh Tefera,Mulugeta Atnafu,Michael Kassa / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2021

The general objective of this study was to examine the professional disposition (attitude and self-efficacy) of pre-service teachers hold at the end of teacher education programs in terms of gender and modality. To do this, we used a quantitative research approach. The source of data was 3rd-year mathematics pre-service teachers who have graduated in the 2018/19 academic year. The study used self-reported questionnaires. Thus, 536 (309 male and 227 female) third-year pre-service mathematics teachers from the three sampled institutions (Kotebe metropolitan university, Hawassa college of teacher education, and Arba Minch college of teacher education) and trained under three modalities (generalist, specialist, or linear) have participated. The result showed that the ongoing teacher education program helps them to have a strong attitude and self-efficacy towards mathematics and mathematics teaching without gender difference. However, variations were observed in attitudes and self-efficacy across modalities. In general, it can be concluded that the teacher education program helps pre-service mathematics teachers to develop a strong attitude and self-efficacy towards mathematics and teaching mathematics. Therefore, it is recommended that further qualitative and detailed analysis should be conducted in order to find which part of the education system or educational inputs help pre-service mathematics teachers in colleges of teacher education to develop positive attitude and self-efficacy towards mathematics and teaching mathematics and should be shared to other universities and colleges.

Author(s): Karolina Łabowicz-Dymanus / Language(s): English Issue: 01+02/2021

The Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw served as a unique distributor of Western visual and performative arts research during the Cold War. From its foundation in 1949 until the late 1960s, the institute enjoyed a hegemonic position that allowed it to dominate intellectual exchanges in the arts between Polish and Western scholars. The institute’s library provides information concerning the circulation of art theories at that time. Through extensive private contacts, the institute collected the latest texts on artistic phenomena and theories that authorities perceived as ‘unofficial’. Analysis of the collection allows for a reconstruction of the distribution of knowledge.

Intellectual Property in the Context of Global Ethics

Intellectual Property in the Context of Global Ethics

Author(s): Cristina LAZARIUC,Ecaterina Lozovanu / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2021

Today we are the subjects and witnesses of the continuous development and transformation of society, which has made rapid leaps from modern to the informational and knowledge-based society. In this sense, in order to ensure technological, economic and social progress, Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) must become the only key element for protecting ideas, stimulating innovation and creativity, designing and contributing to the creation of technology. In this article the authors emphasize the need to address IPR in the context of global ethics, because IPR is also the social responsibility and moral duty of every global citizen, whether creative or consumer, to respect the cultural and intellectual heritage of humanity and to contribute to its diversification and to overcome the challenges of the contemporary world in the digital age. In the current context of the globalization of economic, social and even spiritual life, the need for morality of people is becoming more and more pressing, on which we will continue to focus our concerns, because any new issue addressed includes a component of global ethics.

Критерии за оценка на ЕМС и защита от смущения на основни радиослужби в съответствие с препоръките на ITU-R

Author(s): Anushka Stancheva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 7/2020

The effect of unwanted energy due to one or a combination of several desired and unwanted emissions upon reception in a radio communication system results in performance degradation, misinterpretation or loss of information. Multiple sources of interference may affect the receiver input: services of the same type or other operating in the same frequency band, services operating in adjacent frequency bands, sources generating continuous or short term interferences, fixed or mobile sources, etc. To prevent such interfering situations, a key element is the standardization of appropriate criteria for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and interference protection (IPC). The purpose of the studies and analyzes in this article is to systematize the criteria for electromagnetic compatibility for basic radio services based on the Publications of ITU-R. Criteria for four important areas of radio communications covering fixed, fixed satellite, broadcasting and mobile radio services are compared. Contributions are the categorization of the criteria according to the type of interfering signal and the results of the analyses, which show that the regulatory requirements and practical methods for interference protection and EMC for different radio services differ. Detailed criteria for predicting the probability of interference being standardized only for some radio services.

Произходът на института на процесуалната субстанция в българското право

Author(s): Todor Kolarov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 3/2020

The article strives to analyse the origin of the institute of procedural substitution (for the lack of a better term) in Bulgaria through historic overview, starting with the law of Ancient Rome, going through ius commune and finishing with the contemporary legal regime. From a procedural standpoint, the conclusion is that the institute came into being at the end of the XIX and beginning of the XX century. While manifestations of procedural substitution can be found in the Roman law, this is not an indication of a formulation of the legal institute itself.
