On a Series of Marginally Productive Patterns. English <en> Verbs

Author(s): Georgi Georgiev / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2016

This paper reflects on the <en> verbs of English with respect to their word-formation, their morphological and syntactic properties, their motivation, and their status. The verbs are divided into several groups on the basis of a set of criteria, the central criterion being their word-formation pattern. The influence of the interplay of several categories – phrasality, transitivity, perfectivity, inchoativness, the ergative element and causality – on the verbs is discussed. In analyzing the categories, significant attention is paid to the role that grammatical context plays in motivating the appearance of these lexical items. Thus, symmetry is introduced where such has hitherto been lacking.

Коннектор раз… то и модели его перевода на французский язык: между условием, причиной и следствием

Author(s): Vitaliy Nuriev / Language(s): Russian Issue: 4/2017

The paper takes a closer look at the semantics of the Russian two-place connective raz… to [if; once; since]. This connective is commonly thought to be a mere variant of the conjunction raz, with the same meanings assigned to it. We attempt to show that the main difference between the two connectives lies in the semantic charge of the element to as it serves to emphasize the implicative relation conveyed by raz. To that end, we employ a contrastive approach and use data from Russian and French. For this pair of languages, raz… to is found to be language-specific.

Europos Sąjungos kibernetinio saugumo terminai su dėmeniu kibernetinis, (-ė): reikšmės, kilmė, sinonimija ir variantai

Author(s): Robertas Stunžinas / Language(s): Lithuanian Issue: 24/2017

This article discusses the meanings, origin, synonymy and variations of EU cyber security terms with compound kibernetinis, (-ė) (cyber). The analysis shows that cyber security terms in most cases denote harmful actions and harmful activities or defence actions or defence measures: kibernetinė vagystė (cybertheft), kibernetinis terorizmas(cyberterrorism), kibernetinė gynyba (cyber defence), kibernetinių incidentų pratybos(cyber incident exercises), kibernetinis išteklius (cyber assets). Relatively rarely terms are used to denote persons and their characteristics: kibernetikos ekspertas (cyber expert), kibernetinis šnipas (cyberspy), kibernetinio saugumo įgūdžiai (cybersecurity skills). From the point of view of its origin, cybersecurity terminology is heterogenous. It can be concluded that the majority of cyber security terms are borrowed from warfare and forensics: kibernetinis karas (cyber war), kibernetinė kriminalistika (cyber forensics).Fewer terms are taken from ecology, health, physics, politics, economics, technology, computer science, geography, pedagogy and law: kibernetinė ekosistema (cyber ecosystem),kibernetinė higiena (cyber hygiene), kibernetinio saugumo atsparumas (cyber securityresilience), kibernetinė diplomatija (cyber diplomacy), kibernetinis išteklius (cyber assets),kibernetinio saugumo subjektas (cybersecurity entity), kibernetiniai gebėjimai (cyber skills). The majority of Lithuanian cyber security terms can be considered as calques – qualitative characteristics of more than a half of the Lithuanian terms analyzed completely match with the characteristics of English terms: kibernetinė politika – cyber policy, kibernetinė rizika – cyber risk, kibernetinio saugumo sistema – cyber security systems. Not matching terms have differences in number and meaning of components: dialogaskibernetikos klausimais – cyber dialogue, atkūrimas po kibernetinio incidento – cyber recovery, kibernetinis išteklius – cyber assets. In Lithuanian cybersecurity terminology clarity is the principal consideration therefore longer and non-metaphorical equivalents compared to English terms are used: atkūrimaspo kibernetinio incidento – cyber recovery, kibernetinio saugumo priemonės irtechnologijos – cybersecurity capabilities, grėsmių kibernetiniam saugumui kitimas – cybersecuritythreat landscape. Half of the analyzed terms have synonyms: elektroninė diplomatija– kibernetinė diplomatija – skaitmeninė diplomatija (cyber diplomacy, e-diplomacy,digital diplomacy), kibernetinis nusikaltėlis – kibernetinis užpuolikas (cyber attacker).Synonymy of cyber security terminology is characterized by variety and synonyms could have been caused different time of usage or by aim for the intention to createan appropriate form of expression. Cyber security terminology is a new terminology and is characterized by variety ofexpression. Quite a lot other cyber security terms are used in on-line publications. Inon-line publications instead of borrowed or mixed terms Lithuanian terms are used:kibernetinis puolimas, kibernetinis žvalgas, kibernetinis įvykis. Some cyber security terms have non-typical structure and are used with component kiber(-): kiberginklas, kiberveiksmas, kiber ataka.

Англицизми у спортском регистру – семантичка екстензија и оправданост

Англицизми у спортском регистру – семантичка екстензија и оправданост

Author(s): Jovana D. Tomić / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 18/2018

This paper discusses the influence of English on the Serbian language in sports newspaper discourse, starting from theoretical assumptions of contact linguistics, sociolinguistics theory of stratification of language, changing of codes and linguistic borrowing, which raises the question of the existence of the Angloserbian language as a variety of the Serbian language, formed under the influence of English. As can be observed, the use of foreign words of English origin – Anglicisms will be the subject of our paper. In this regard, this paper should answer two questions: whether those Anglicisms are justified or not, what is their status in the language and the level of their semantic adaptation. Starting from the fact that Anglicisms can be classified into several groups: quite justified, through to justified and unjustified and totally unjustified, the paper looks into the justifiability of recent Anglicisms in the Serbian language and its semantic extension. The corpus will be limited to the electronic version of the news magazine, two Serbian dailies (Novosti and Blic) from 2017/18. As an auxiliary corpus in the survey we used dictionaries of new words. Adaptation of anglicisms at the semantic level comprises various changes of meaning that occur at the process of borrowing. Three types of semantic changes have been analysed in this paper, changes in semantic extension: zero extension, expansion of meaning and narrowing of meaning. A considerable number of loanwords undergo zero semantic extension; they preserve their original meaning. Expansion of meaning is a secondary change since loanwords in the borrowing language acquire new meanings unknown in the source language. The narrowing of meaning is a frequent semantic change. Today’s presence of Anglicisms in the Serbian language is, given the high levels of exposure of Serbian speakers to English, an inevitable and expected phenomenon. Some Serbian linguists fear that Anglicisms are slowly supplanting Serbian words, which might eventually lead to forgetting who we are. The cause of this is frequently seen in the lack of adequate and institutionalised care of the Serbian language, marked by a lack of a centrally controlled language policy and consistent language planning, and by an easily observable disregard for Serbian in public communication. Furthermore, they regret the lack of an active relationship with English loanwords, that is, the activation of the Serbian language’s own linguistic potential also allowing the creation of native equivalents to Anglicisms. Today’s presence of Anglicisms in Serbian is rarely seen as the wealth, or conversely, the detriment of the Serbian language. It is rather perceived to imply or indicate: that first, Serbia(n) is ensuing the globalisation of the modern world and the influence of English as a global language; and second the subsequent missing role of the media in the popularisation of Serbian equivalents to Anglicisms. To sum up, the parallel use of Anglicisms and their native equivalents creates space for the semantic and stylistic diversification of language and for a freedom of linguistic choice.

Author(s): Sonja Špadijer / Language(s): Bosnian,Croatian,Serbian Issue: 25/2018

Author(s): Milan Todorović / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 14/2016

In this paper we studied the influence of the English language on the discourse of people in the area of video games. In the first part of the paper we introduced the lexicological and sociolinguistic terminology, which is necessary to understand and fully appreciate the characteristics of the gamer discourse. Additionally, we scrutinised the status of the English language as a lingua franca. We gathered the corpus by observing a group of gamers who communicate with each other over Facebook. Furthermore, we gave a survey to the aforementioned group. Results indicate an overwhelmingly positive attitude towards the use of the English language in combination with Serbian when the subject of video games is raised.

Giant, Devil or Death? The Finnish Koljo in Mythology, Toponyms, Folklore and Archaeology

Giant, Devil or Death? The Finnish Koljo in Mythology, Toponyms, Folklore and Archaeology

Author(s): Juha Ruohonen / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2011

In the classic work Mythologia Fennica, published in 1789, the author Christfrid Ganander (1742–1790) tells a story based on oral tradition about two giants called Koljo and Kiljo, living in Rantsila in Osthrobothnia. When engaged in fighting, they hurled large stones at each other, and now the stones are found in the River Siikajoki, half a kilometre away, known later as Koljonkivi (gen. + kivi ‘stone’) and Kiljon - kivi. The still waters between the rocks have been called Koljonsuvanto, and in the vicinity there are also other places named after the same tradition (Ganander, 1789, 42). Even today, on the west bank of the River Siikajoki there stands a farmhouse called Koljo, while Kiljo’s farm stands on the east bank. [...]

THE IMPACT OF ENGLISH ON CUBAN SPANISH: A GLOSSARY-BASED ANALYSIS OF MORPHOLOGICAL ADAPTATIONS (PART 1)

Author(s): José Antonio Sánchez Fajardo / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2019

This article is intended to explore the linguistic means of anglicization in Cuban Spanish. Thus, a corpus-driven database or glossary of this variant of Spanish has been elaborated to examine these English-induced units quantitatively and qualitatively, entailing a morpho-syntactic and semantic analysis of the anglicization process. This research study is based on two major stages: data collection and data processing of the lemmas compiled. The resulting glossary is used in this part of the study to unravel the morphological and syntactic features of the English-induced units, in particular those of gender and number. A compilation of these Cuban-Spanish units allows for a better understanding of morphological changes and lexical creativity, in keeping with the historical socioeconomic conditions of the island.

The Role of Phonotactic Information in the Processing and Production of Inflectional Morphology

The Role of Phonotactic Information in the Processing and Production of Inflectional Morphology

Author(s): Strahinja Dimitrijević / Language(s): English Issue: 19/2019

In two separate studies, it was examined to what extent in languages with rich inflectional morphology, such as Serbian, in the tasks of automatic perception and word production we can rely on phonotactic information, i.e. permitted combinations of phonemes/graphemes. In the first study, with the help of support vector machines, word classes discrimination was carried out based on bigrams and trigrams generated at the morphosyntactic category level. In the second study, the production of inflected forms was explored, with the help of memory-based learning, relying on phonotactic information from the last four syllables of lemmas. Maximum discrimination accuracy of inflected word classes was obtained on the basis of bigrams reaching about 93% of accuracy. Similarly, in the task of inflectional production on all inflected word classes taken together, around 92% of the inflected forms were generated correctly. This confirms that phonotactic information in the perception and production of morphologically complex words plays an important role. Therefore, this information should be taken into account when considering the emergence of larger language units and patterns. The results show that functional connections between orthography/phonology and semantics lead to successful lexical learning, but at the same time they call into question the need for positing the existence of mental lexicon in which mental representations of various language characteristics are stored.

Преводни еквиваленти италијанизама у Граматици италијанској Викентија Љуштине (1794)

Author(s): Slavica Pantić / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 50/2019

The research topic of this paper was the analysis of the translation equivalents found in the dictionary part of The Italian Grammar by Vikentije Ljuština (1794). The aim of the analysis was to determine the origin of the translation equivalents and the degree of usage of the Russian recension of Church Slavonic in the abovementioned book published at the end of the 18th century and dedicated to the Illyrian youth. Since the dictionary is divided into thematic sections, the lexemes from each section were first classified according to their semantics fields. Each semantic field was subsequently analyzed. The special focus of this research was given to the analysis of the adequacy of the translation equivalents.

Речник фитонима у лекаруши Kосте Rадовића (1830)

Author(s): Nikolina P. Tutuš / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 50/2019

This paper presents a healing book with a prayer book written by Kosta Radović in 1830, which is kept in the Rarities department of Matica Srpska under the signature RR II 62. The aim of the research is to look at pre-standard language expression at the lexical level and to compose the dictionary of phytonyms represented in this manuscript. As a result, a systematic review of the herbs used for healing is obtained, as well as an overview of the language fund related to their naming. Comparison with older, medieval, medical books, such as the Hodoški zbornik and the Hilandarski tipik, seeks to shed light on the potential association of this manuscript with works of a similar purpose in the earlier period, using as criteria the organization of the text, the number and identity of the plant species, their names and medicinal actions attributed to them.

Блискозначне именице 'основа' и 'темељ' и методе њихове семантичке диференцијације

Author(s): Jelena Perišić / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 50/2019

The ability of individual lexemes to appear in different contexts, providing variable semantic realization, is often a result of their insufficiently specified semantics, and for this reason they are called semantic underspecified lexemes. Given the fact that the meaning of underspecified lexemes is determined based on the immediate environment in which they appear, collocations are a worthy minimal context to explore their meaning. In this paper we will examine the examples of collocations with lexemes ‘osnova’ and ‘temelj’, in order to determine their meaning, the degree of matching of their semantics and a conceptualization of terms denoted by these nouns. Before proceeding to the study, we will present the results of earlier research on this topic – research of Milka Ivić on semantic underspecification of lexeme thing and the research of Rajna Dragićević of lexeme ‘osnova’. Unlike the Rajna Dragićević who examined semantic underspecification of lexeme ‘osnova’ using a conceptual analysis, in this research we will primarily use collocation method, which is developed in Serbian linguistics by Boris Hlebec. A basic hypothesis is that the results of the use of these methods will coincide to a large extent, and that is an assumption which R. Dragićević states in her study. Corpus research represent collocation with lexemes ‘osnova’ and ‘temelj’, registered in the Corpus of Contemporary Serbian language made at the Faculty of Mathematics in Belgrade.

Антонимија придева просторних односа

Author(s): Marija S. Milosavljević / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 20/2019

This paper analyses the antonymy of spatial adjectives. The aim is to verify the extent to which the frequency of occurrence of certain associations is related with the meaning of adjectives and the degree of opposition among members of adjectival antonymic pairs. Adjective antonyms were analysed on the basis of the Associative Dictionary and verbal associations, which were obtained through a survey with associative tests. Based on the material from the dictionary, it was concluded that in adjectives that have regular antonyms, in most cases the antonym appears as the first association. However, the survey has shown that with adjectives that have an antonym, the antonym does not necessarily appear as the most frequent association.
