Dostoevsky on immortality of the soul
and unearthly Paradise

Dostoevsky on immortality of the soul and unearthly Paradise

Author(s): Grzegorz Przebinda / Language(s): English,Polish Issue: 1/2018

Dostojewski o nieśmiertelności duszy i raju pozaziemskim Artykuł stanowi próbę opisu światopoglądu rosyjskiego pisarza i myśliciela Fiodora Michajłowicza Dostojewskiego (1821–1881) w kontekście rozumienia przez niego nieśmiertelności duszy ludzkiej oraz raju pozaziemskiego w opozycji do ateistycznych i antyteistycznych ideologii Rosji drugiej połowy XIX wieku, w tym przede wszystkim „bezbożnego socjalizmu”. Ukazuje fundamentalne różnice pomiędzy cząstkami ideowo-fabularnymi powieści Bracia Karamazow – Przewrót geologiczny, Legenda o raju i Wielki Inkwizytor – w kontekście rozważań pisarza o osobowej nieśmiertelności człowieka i jego istnieniu w „raju pozaziemskim”.

Author(s): Kazimierz Sikora / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2018

The author deals with the issue of rural motifs in the contemporary discourse on localism, (so called ‘little homelands’). Professor Stanisław Pigoń, who was an outstanding scholar and thinker, is an excellent liaison with the rural tradition and axiology, which still play a role in maintaining a sense of identity and rooting as well as the consciousness of local communities. The text places the above mentioned issues against the historical background, relating them to the formation of a new national and social identity as well as the political and cultural revival taking place in the 19th century villages. It presents both the role of great historical events (e.g. emerging of the great legend of Tadeusz Kosciuszko as a peasant leader) and great leaders of the people’s movement (e.g. Wincenty Witos and Maciej Rataj) in the spreading of the civic and patriotic attitudes. Owing to that, the Polish peasant became a Pole. The author also narrates the great changes in the culture and rural consciousness in the interwar period and after WWII. He draws attention to the timeless validity of Stanisław Pigoń’s message that the rural background, local culture, rural dialect and tradition are a great value and important element of the sense of local and national identity.

Język i liturgia słowiańska u zarania chrystianizacji Polski – dawne i nowsze fakty, hipotezy, dyskusje

Author(s): Stanisław Koziara / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2018

This paper attempts to look synthetically at the current state of research concerning the contentious issue of the presence of Slavonic language and liturgy in the early period of the Christianization of the Polish lands. Most of the attention has been paid to philological and historical arguments which have been provided so far in the course of this discussion. The author has classified a variety of old and recent opinions and hypotheses concerning this topic into three categories of attitudes: confirming, negating, or referring to the issue by way of compromise. The final part of the paper deals with those attitudes which tend towards redirecting the discussion on the presence and range of Slavonic language and liturgy in Poland to a broader context of religious and cultural heritage of the mission carried out by Saints Cyril and Methodius, the Apostles of the Slavs.

Kilka uwag na temat znaczenia Chrztu Polski w historii języka polskiego

Author(s): Kazimierz Sikora / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2019

The Author – as a linguist and language historian – tries to present various consequences of the adoption of Christianity by the young state of Mieszko I in 966. He focuses on the issues of the linguistic-cultural and European identity of Poles, emphasizing that a universalist vision of European countries would not have been possible without the integrating influence of the community of faith and values. In his opinion, the difficult questions of the present day (e.g. about the future of Poland and Europe) find a current answer in the heritage of the past, especially in the deposits of knowledge and tradition preserved in the language.

Ulotne obrazy słowem malowane. Tłumaczenia jueju Tang Yinga 唐英 (1682–1756) autorstwa studentów trzeciego roku sinologii Uniwersytetu Gdańskiego

Author(s): Amelia Macioszek / Language(s): Polish Issue: 23/2023

This article aims at introducing Tang Ying (1682–1756), who is better known as the manager of the Jingdezhen manufacture than as a poet. Some of his short and expressive poems known in Chinese literature under the name of jueju 絕句 were translated by my students during our classical Chinese club sessions. Each translation is different not only because of the fact that each poem is different, but also because each of the students has his/her unique way of looking at the poems and understanding them. Poetry translation is one of the hardest tasks, as it requires not only knowledge of the language from which it is being translated, but also a unique skill in grasping a poem’s essence. Even though little is known about where and how jueju developed, the dominant theories speculate that they have their source during the Tang dynasty. They are known for their brevity and their poignant nature, which enchanted not only professional poets, but also “laymen” in this regard such as Tang Ying.

Wojenna retoryka przemocy w konflikcie rosyjsko-ukraińskim

Wojenna retoryka przemocy w konflikcie rosyjsko-ukraińskim

Author(s): Marek Kochan / Language(s): Polish Issue: 3/2023

The topic of the article are the media reports from the Russo-Ukrainian war, focused on the issue of the violence. Violence could be the act of communication, used to dominate the victims, as a ritual integrating community and the act of self-presentation of the aggressor. Rhetoric of violence refers to a certain way to describe the acts of violence, to utterances accompanying violence or being violence, instigating to it or legitimizing it. After discussing the concept, the war rhetoric of violence in the Russo-Ukrainian war is described in the article, in its linguistic dimension and content (analysis cover headlines of the publications, terms used to name the aggressors and their actions, elements stressing their brutality, mass character of violence, its systemic nature and support given by some citizens of the Russian Federation). Following the idea of rhetoric of violence’s legitimization, the author proposes the term rhetoric of violence’s de-legitimization, including 1. the rhetoric of brutality, 2. the rhetoric of breaking the civilizational rules, 3. the rhetoric of mass and systemic nature and common support, 4. the rhetoric of senseless violence. The conclusion of the article is that this rhetoric might affect the image of the Russian Federation, its soldiers and citizens, and lead to excluding them from the community of civilized countries and societies, at the same time empowering the support for Ukrainian victims and their struggle, being the effective defensive weapon in Russo-Ukrainian war.

Wymysiöejer łod – czyli stan badań nad skrzyniami malowanymi z Wilamowic

Wymysiöejer łod – czyli stan badań nad skrzyniami malowanymi z Wilamowic

Author(s): Justyna Majerska-Sznajder / Language(s): Polish Issue: 10/2022

Wilamowice is a cultural phenomenon on the ethnographic map of Po¬land. Settled in the 13th century by settlers from Western Europe, it has maintained their separate identity for years. From the beginning of the scientific world’s interest in Wilamowice, the main objects of researchers were costumes, customs and language. Although the first attempts to docu-ment the painted Vilamovicean chests were made at the beginning of the 20th century as part of the Sprachinsel Fälschung project, this topic was overshadowed by a more “ideologically meaningful” local costumes or language. Apart from Roman Rainfuss, no one has published issues related to the subject of the Vilamovicean chests phenomenon – wymysiöeryś łóda – until modern times. The ongoing cultural revitalization, focused on the emic perspective, allowed us to look at this phenomenon in a broad, in¬terdisciplinary scope. In addition to an attempt at formal characterization, determining the types and manufacturers, the state of research to date and the preserved specimens, it is possible to grasp a broader cultural con¬text. What was the ancient meaning of painted chests? What were their functions? What beliefs were associated with this piece of furniture? What caused such a small number of surviving copies? How are they stored to¬day? How do they currently function in the culture of Wilamowice? The content of the article attempts to answer these and other interdisciplinary questions, taking into account the narrative of this micro ethnic minority.

Popularyzacja dziedzictwa kulturowo-językowego pogranicza polsko-czeskiego na przykładzie Międzynarodowego Konkursu Gwary Laskiej „Morawske rzadzyni selske hospodyni”

Author(s): Marcela Szymańska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 6/2018

The article presents an example of good practice in the field of regional education, which is the organization of the cyclical International Lendian Dialect Contest called „Moravian stories of a farmer’s wife” (Moravian dialect: „Morawske rzadzyni selske hospodyni”) in the Primary School in Krzanowice (continuously since 2007).The overriding goal of this initiative is to popularize the cultural and linguistic heritage of the Polish-Czech borderland, a specific and unique region due to the cross-influence of four cultures and state and political changes that have taken place over the centuries. The contest fulfills an educational, social and cultural function. In adult recipients, it shapes and strengthens ties with the environment, creates a sense of regional community and stimulates social activity. Whereas, in the young generation, itarouses interest in the problems of history, sensitizes them to the richness and specificity of the Moravian heritage, and in the wider perspective enables shaping and developing the need for attachment to the homeland and respect for the legacy of ancestors.

This thesis discusses the basic options of work in an application Transkribus, about its benefits, pitfalls and innovations that we presented in the selected sample of archival documents with the topic of citizen complaints during the governance of the Communist party in Czechoslovakia in the 1948-1989. Gradually we have documented the process of working with historical sources in Transkribus, preparation, transcription and the results. Because we focused on typewritten documents only, we compared the results with other ways and options of transcription, we evaluated their usability, which leads to interesting conclusions and results. The thesis is also supported by statistical indicators and pictorial schedules on the basis of which we have did specific conclusions. In the thesis we also present the issue of citizen complaints as a topic of historical research.

OUR DEATH IS OUR STRONGEST SURVIVING TRADITION: A Guest Essay by the Artist of Our Cover Image

Author(s): Ukjese van Kampen / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

In Canada, Yukon First Nations are politically powerful and, when viewed by an outsider, everything appears to be progressing well. But the adoption of the Western political model has a downside. We have generally sacrificed our culture for that political power. The loss of our culture has resulted in many social problems and this essay discusses what has resulted from those problems, specifically our high death rate. Ironically, our death ritual, the Potlatch, is one of the strongest surviving cultural traditions we still exercise, while our languages, laws, art, lifestyle, and spirituality are almost all forgotten.

«D’occulte terre altro emispero»: viaggio e conqista nell’epica secentesca

Author(s): Giulia Dell’Aquila / Language(s): Italian Issue: 2/2023

Between the late Sixteenth century and the first half of the Seventeenth century, an epic production dedicated to the narrative of the discovery and conquest of America became widespread. The customs and traditions of the native peoples and the fascinating nature of those places, untouched by civilization, are made known to European readers through a series of oceanic poems, which correspond to the desire for knowledge and exoticism typical of the 17th century. For these reasons, the American epic, while collaborating in consolidating stereotypes related to ethnicity, well represents the seventeenth-century spirit, animated by a broad and bold project of revolution in every field of knowledge.

This review deals with the most recent novel written by Italian journalist and former editor-in-chief of la Repubblica Ezio Mauro, Lo scrittore senza nome: processo alla letteratura (2021). The plot revolves around the events that precede and follow the arrest and trial of Russian authors Andrei Sinyavsky and Yuli Daniel. However, from the very beginning, the reader is made aware of the character around whom the story is centered: Yuli Daniel. To tell this story, the author writes a journalistic novel, which is a variation of the traditional literary genres combining fictional and non-fictional elements.
