Author(s): Jan Mikołaj Wolski / Language(s): Polish

The life of the monks was entirely attuned to one goal – the salvation of the soul. The desire to be saved and the idea of how it could be achieved shaped the foundations of monastic culture. Of all the Christians who declared the same overarching objective, the monks were distinguished by the fortitude of their resolve, which determined their characteristic radicalism. The greatest masters of Eastern Christian spirituality: Saint Basil the Great, Dorotheus of Gaza, Saint Isaac the Syrian and Saint John Climacus, would instruct those wanting eternal glory to never neglect the issue of their salvation. Ascetic life was thought to give a better chance of achieving salvation, as opposed to living “in the world”. In this work, monastic culture has been shown as a totality of symbolic means used by the monks to fulfil their life purpose. The dissertation is based on varied sources, primarily including what would be read by the monks in those days (selective choice), texts describing their lives (i.e., the lives of saints) and regulating them, and texts conveying the opinions of the monasteries and their inhabitants, written by the people living at the time (donation deeds of the then rulers, monks’ own writing).

The book presents the synthesis of the environmental and archaeological approaches which can answer a principally historical questions related to the uprise of the high mediaeval settlement structure but also of the beginnings of the gold and silver exploitation in the project base area. The book offers structured data to the mediaeval development in the region which is still lacking direct archaelogical evidence in many areas. A low and sometimes difficult detectability of early deforestation, settlement and a whole spectre of the mining activities is compensated by archaeoenvironmental, geochemical and archaeometallurgical analytics of the alluvial sediments in this territory.

English Literature Advancing Through History 1. Old English (Anglo-Saxon) and Medieval Periods

Author(s): Petru Golban / Language(s): English

It appears that literary work possesses eternal temporal validity due to its autonomous aesthetic value, whereas criticism provides points of view having temporary and transitory significance. Despite such claims, the vector of methodology in our series of books, dealing with the history of English literature, relies on Viktor Shklovsky, T. S. Eliot, Mikhail Bakhtin, and especially Yuri Tynyanov, whose main reasoning would be that literature is a system of dominant, central and peripheral, marginalized elements – to us, “tradition” (centre) versus “innovation” (margin) engaged in a “battle” for supremacy, demarginalization, and the right to form a new literary system – and the development or historical advancement of literature is the substitution of systems. Roman Jakobson and French structuralism, on the whole, later Linda Hutcheon, with her “system” and “constant”, and Bran Nicol with the “dominant”, to say nothing about Itamar Even-Zohar and his theory of polysystem, to a certain extent Julia Kristeva, and even Homi Bhabha – as well as our humble contribution, by means of the books in the present series, we would like to believe – maintain Tynyanov’s line of thinking and concepts alive, which have developed and emerged nowadays more like a kind of “neo-formalism”. Die Juden in Deutschland während des Mittelalters in politischer, socialer und rechtlicher Beziehung

Author(s): Otto Stobbe / Language(s): German

THE BOOK IS READYBLE ONLY BY READERS BEING FAMILIAR WITH GERMAN FRAKTURA CHARACTERS !! ... "I would solve my task in a very imperfect way if I content myself with only describing the position and circumstances of the Jews in general. Just as the history of the German people and German law only comes to life through the detail, just as rarely the same is true of the south as of the north, of the cities as of the flat country, so the Jews as well in different places found very different destiny. Everywhere they were considered to be in need of protection, but in one place they were really granted protection, in the other they were completely abandoned to arbitrariness. So it is not enough to give a general description, not even to communicate the laws and privileges enacted for them; it is rather to show how far these legal rules have been realized in life. And I hoped to do this best by collecting as much detail as possible about the history of the most important communities, even at the risk of repeating myself here and there." (from the author’s introduction)

Practical Horsemanship in Medieval Arthurian Romance

Author(s): Anastasija Ropa / Language(s): English

The figure of a knight on horseback is the emblem of medieval chivalry. Much has been written on the ideology and practicalities of knighthood as portrayed in medieval romance, especially Arthurian romance, and it is surprising that so little attention was hitherto granted to the knight’s closest companion, the horse. This study examines the horse as a social indicator, as the knight’s animal alter ego in his spiritual peregrinations and earthly adventures, the ups and downs of chivalric adventure, as well as the relations between the lady and her palfrey in romance. Both medieval authors and their audiences knew more about the symbolism and practice of horsemanship than most readers do today. By providing the background to the descriptions of horses and horsemanship in Arthurian romance, this study deepens the readers’ appreciation of these texts. At the same time, critical reading of romance supplies information about the ideology and daily practice of horsemanship in the Middle Ages that is otherwise impossible to obtain from other sources, be it archaeology, chronicles or administrative documentation.

Mary, the Apostles, and the Last Judgment. Apocryphal Representations from Late Antiquity to the Middle Ages

Author(s): / Language(s): English

This volume presents a timely contribution to the growing body of scholarship on the apocryphal writings and their reception in the Middle Ages, especially in connection with visual representation. It aims to bridge what often remains disconnected, the visual art and the written text, the early Christian roots and medieval reception, the East and the West, as well as methodologies of various disciplines. The studies in this volume firstly investigate issues related to the Virgin Mary, and through them, also the status, function, and identity of women. Mary and the female element thus represent significant models and/or background figures in fields pertaining to theology, religious studies, textual studies, manuscript studies, and art history in a trans-disciplinary perspective. Secondly, the studies focus on the apostles and the Last Judgment, their visual representations and the use of apocryphal sources. The volume is divided in two parts according to two major topics: Part I dealing with Mary in the Apocrypha, and Part II focusing on the Apostles and the Last Judgment.

Хърватското житие на св. Екатерина, александрийската девица и мъченица

Author(s): Simeon Stefanov / Language(s): Bulgarian,Croatian

This book offers a new edition with a transliteration and a detailed analysis of the linguistic peculiarities of a little-known in science and hitherto unexplored Medieval Croatian manuscript. This is the vita of St. Catherine “Legenda sv. Katarine divice” according to manuscript I c 6 from the Archives of HAZU. The text was created for the nuns from the Franciscan monastery “St. Ekaterina” in Zadar, was kept in the virgin Benedictine monastery “St. Maria” in Zadar, later became part of the rich book collection of Ivan Kukuljevic, and since 1869 it has been among the manuscripts of the library of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts. It was written in the vernacular from the region of Central and Northern Dalmatia from the period XIV-XV centuries. The writing, spelling, morphology, vocabulary of the selected manuscript are described and analyzed in detail. A special emphasis in the study is placed on the style of Croatian vita. Stylistic analysis overlaps each of the linguistic levels listed above. A supposed Latin prothograph, on which the Croatian translation was probably made, has also been recovered. The results of the textual analysis show that the style of the Croatian vita is unique, rarely influenced by the Latin text and is a testimony rather to the skills and experience of the translator/compiler in the translation/compilation activity.

Цар Симеон Велики (893–927)

Author(s): Rasho Rashev / Language(s): Bulgarian

Rasho Rashev’s book does not have a monolithic character. It does not comprehensively reveal the time and activities of King Simeon the Great, but consists of several studies, which the author himself defines as “touches to his personality and work”. In them a very interesting and largely successful attempt has been made to seek answers to questions that have remained outside the attention of previous researchers or have been little addressed by them. Among the themes he discusses are: the notion of the king as a “vassal peacemaker”, a “new Moses”, a “new David”; Simeon’s nature as the “last proto-Bulgarian”; his activities as a historian and his attitude to the Name Book of the Bulgarian Khans and to the pagan past of his ancestors. Rasho Rashev’s interpretation is not only original and attracts with its new ideas, but also predisposes to reflection. It greatly enriches the image of the great Bulgarian king.

A Historical, Liturgical and Musical Exploration of Kondakarnoie Pienie. The Deciphering of a Medieval Slavic Enigma

A Historical, Liturgical and Musical Exploration of Kondakarnoie Pienie. The Deciphering of a Medieval Slavic Enigma

Author(s): Gregory Myers / Language(s): English

Kondakarnoie pienie is one of medieval music's enduring mysteries. The nature of its repertory and the deciphering of its musical script are beset with complex problems. The key to the direct transcription of Kondakarian musical notation has not survived, had it ever existed in the first place; an exact rendering of the Kondakarian neumes into modern staff notation is for now impossible owing to the peculiar nature of the signs. Aside from the contrasting cultural climates of the Byzantine Greeks and Medieval Slavs, local customs produce variants within a common manuscript tradition, and the considerable chronological differences separating the surviving corpus of manuscripts further complicates the situation. While those who have examined the Kondakar have universally acknowledged the Byzantine origins of its notation, the absence of a transcribable Byzantine intermediary has kept the decoding of the enigmatic script elusive, with the result that the bulk of its richest repertory, i.e., the kontakia, has remained indecipherable.

Początki obrządku szkieletowego na ziemiach polskich w okresie wczesnego średniowiecza

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

The collection of articles explores the issue of the beginnings of inhumation in Poland perceived as a testimony to the adoption of Christianity. The discussion focuses on determining at whichmoment in our history the use of skeletal funeral rite begins: around 966, after the baptism of Mieszko I, in the second half of the 10th century, or during the times of Mieszko’s successor, Bolesław Chrobry in the 11th century? This is crucial for dating the beginnings of Christianity in Poland, the medieval skeletal cemeteries and the progress of Christianization of Polish lands.

Oblicza Wojny, t. 9, Narzędzia wojny

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

Oblicza Wojny is a series published by the Lodz University Press since 2020, dedicated to military conflicts throughout the centuries. The ninth volume of this series is titled Tools of War. When thinking about tools used during wars, various types of weaponry and armament come to mind, and this is precisely the subject matter of the texts published in this volume. The discussions include fortifications in the Battle of Dyrrachium in 48 BCE, the armament of knights from the royal retinues of Polish kings in the second half of the 15th century, and the weaponry amassed in the arsenals of Krakow in the 17th century. Subsequent articles concern the 20th century, highlighting the use of armored trains in the Polish-Bolshevik War of 1919-1921, the fate of the Polish 1st Tank Regiment at the end of World War I, Irish guerrilla warfare in the years 1919-1921, armament production in Poland before 1939, and aircraft used during World War II. The volume also includes an article on a rarely discussed topic by historians, which is the equipment of the Polish military from 1945 to 1989. The volume concludes with an article dedicated to attempts to create an army of the League of Arab States in 21st century. The authors are professional historians, and their texts are based on thorough analysis of sources.
