Stari pokrajinski katalog ili Katalog provincija Opće Crkve

Author(s): Ante Škegro / Language(s): Croatian

Provinciale vetus sive Ecclesiae universae provinciarum notitia is a complex source in which one of the oldest catalogues of the Catholic bishoprics can be found. The source was dated in the period of Charlemagne (768-814) and grouped together with documents and codexes from his era, inspite the fact that some data are from the later centuries. It is evident that content and structure of this source is very complex, including the data form different periods: we can identify several authors and redactors of the source. Also, we can compare this source with the Liber censum Romanae Ecclesiae, a list of the bishoprics, abbeys, chapters and some lay institutions subjected to the Roman Church, which had the financial and other obligations towards it. This document was written in 1192 by papal chamberlain Sabellus Cencius. Provinciale vetus sive Ecclesiae universae provinciarum notitia is rich with data form early-medieval Christian history. The analysis of its content shows that this source contains documents from different periods. It is evident that already in the early-medieval period the author who was not really a connoisseur of religious and political history revised it. This conclusion was made already by an editor who published Medieval sources in the mid-19th century. The publication was equipped with rich critical apparatus, but remains unclear why the source Provinciale vetus sive Ecclesiae universae provinciarum notitia, containing documents from later periods, was published together with the documents and codexes from the period of Charles the Great. Some authors have been ignoring this source, or have used its information in a negative sense. This source, however, should be used by researches of the Late Antiquity and Early medieval History in comparison with other sources and using critical methodology .

Smrt na Kosovu polju

Author(s): Ivan Čolović / Language(s): Serbian

“The subject of my interest in this book are the ideological and political functions of memories of the Battle of Kosovo, from the first stories about them to the present day. I have displayed the documents that make up the examples of animating this story, and I have also organized them according to geopolitical criteria. I have divided the oldest documents on this theme into three groups: first, the documents of the Serbian church about Kosovo, then Ottoman, Byzantine, Italian and Western European documents, as well as documents from Dubrovnik. I have grouped the documents related to Kosovo from the 19th and 20th centuries according to the same principle, with unique presentations of Serbian, Montenegrin, Croatian, Slovenian, Bosnian, Yugoslav and Albanian examples. The panorama that is produced of political references to the Battle of Kosovo and the ideological messages contained in these stories demonstrate for how long, and with what intensity, the memory of Kosovo is present in the history of several Balkan nations and states, when and why it has operated in the function of their rapproachment and unity, and when and why it has served for their division and for the encouragement of mutual hatred and conflict (…)The Kosovo myth first appears in its fully developed form in the 19th century, when old stories about the Battle of Kosovo are revised and expanded in order to put into the service of the principal political-religious cult of the time, the cult of the nation, which will be the object of evocation of Kosovo in the 20th century and the first decades of the 21st century. That means that the examples of the Kosovo narrative from before the 19th century, that is before the appearance of nationalism, are different from the later ones and belong to the prehistory of the Kosovo myth. But since I have not been able to identify with precision the moment when that prehistory ends and history begins – just as historians of nationalism are not certain when it begins – I have not divided this book into two parts, prehistorical and historical, but have rather left it to the readers to use the examples I have analysed to follow the process of constituting nationalistic mythic narratives about Kosovo on the first half of the 19th century and their reactivation and political use after that.” (from the Introduction)

Az emberi testtől az óraműig. Az állam metaforái és formaváltozásai a nyugati keresztény kultúrkörben 1300–1800

Author(s): Endre Sashalmi / Language(s): Hungarian

The use of metaphors for the state is closely related to the problem already expounded by Kant, namely that the state is beyond the organs of human perception, therefore, it can only be imagined symbolically. Indeed, as Michael Walzer plausibly stated, the state cannot be perceived physically by the subjects/citizens as it cannot be seen or touched: “The state is invisible; it must be personified before it can be seen, symbolized before it can be loved, imagined before it can be conceived.” Our everyday phrases used with regard to the state clearly confirm his statement. We routinely speak of the organs of the state, or the operation of the machinery of the state without being aware of the fact that in the first case the state is conceived as a living organism, while in the latter we treat it an artificial creature. This phenomenon is none other than the living imprint of those successive metaphors in our language which once were used to imagine the state in the medieval and the early modern period. The other main topic of the book is the survey on the historical development of the state, presenting the specific features of the successive phases of its development through examples taken mainly from the history of Western European countries. Besides concentrating on the classical monarchies of Western Europe, the survey lays a great emphasis on territories which are generally much less known, namely the Scandinavian region. One of the main reasons for its inclusion into the analysis is the fact that in the 17th -18th centuries Denmark was the country in Europe which can be labelled as the model of absolute monarchy.

This collection of essays constitutes a mosaic. Romans were fond of mosaics, for instance, at the entrance of their houses. The numerous little tiles could make up a skeleton, for instance, but that did not imply that one should ”flee this place for this is the dwelling place of Death”, but rather that ”Death, you do not belong here”. Let us attempt to read this book in this spirit.

An attempt to reconstruct the sources and describe the spirituality profile of selected Polish religious communities in the European context. It consists of dissertations presenting the basic determinants of the value of Polish pre-Tridentine culture in terms of spirituality and piety. In subsequent articles, the authors describe selected values (religious, political, ethical, aesthetic), referring to new, unique sources, not yet analyzed at all or considered from a research perspective other than that adopted by the authors. Eucharistia, Exegesis, Pietas, Devotio, Penitentia, Indulgentia, Paideia, Paupertas, Memoria - these are selected concepts on the basis of which the authors try to show the central idea of the entire project on the culture of the First Republic in dialogue with Europe and hermeneutics of values: scope, directions and methods the mutual flow of reflection in Polish and European culture - here in relation to the pre-Tridentine era and in the face of the emerging challenges of humanism during the Renaissance. The 12-volume series of monographs Kultura First Rzeczpospolitej in dialogue with Europe. The Hermeneutics of Values ”presents the cultural heritage of the 15th and 18th centuries as an integral but original part of European culture. The research goal is to identify the ways and forms of the mutual transmission of aesthetic, political and religious values and to present in a broad, multilateral comparative context the axiological structure of the Polish culture of old times. Cultural texts are examined from an internal perspective as records of acts aimed at understanding values, and from an external perspective as statements that join European literary-aesthetic, political and religious discussions. In an intense dialogue, the culture of the Republic of Poland shows not only a receptivity to new ideas, but also creativity and dynamism in operating in Europe.

Mapping Ptolemaic Dacia

Author(s): Şerban George Paul Drugaş / Language(s): English

This volume is a contribution to the decipherment of Ptolemy’s universal map, with focus on the territory known as Dacia. The information provided by Ptolemy was translated into modern data considering local features and complying with certain general principles. The difficulty of this task consisted in the way the ancient manuscripts transmitted the original location coordinates, as well as in the way Ptolemy patched together information from ancient itineraries and other sources. The author of this volume conceived a general formula for mapping Dacia based on the information found in the two oldest sources he used. Furthermore, he determined local patterns with the help of the other sources – therefore, defining locations resulted in a better determination of the surrounding relative positions. This information, as well as the correlation of the Ptolemaic locations with archaeological findings, provides an increased recognition of Ptolemaic Dacia, while also contributing to exposing the Ptolemaic universal map.
