Author(s): Andreea Apostu / Language(s): French / Issue: 1/2012

This paper aims to retrace the manifold, often contradictory meanings underlying the works of the Nabis – an almost esoteric group of French artists which emerged near the end of the 19th century. Their primary sources of inspiration were, following in Baudelaire’s footsteps, remote in both space (Japanese art) and time (Medieval art). I shall attempt to analyse the manner in which several artists of this group use the medieval ambivalence of the forest in their paintings, as well as try to determine whether any major semantic shifts ensue in their treatment of this widespread imaginary topos. The paper’s main thesis is that this ambivalence is adapted to the intrinsic modernist tension between a feeling of despair, coupled with the anxiety of being faced with the positivist, essentially rationalistic explanation of existence, and an enormous desire to transform the world, so that it no longer opposes the Self.

"Svatovska groblja” - problemi istraživanja

Author(s): Vlajko Palavestra / Language(s): Bosnian / Issue: 30/1997

The term “Wedding party cemeteries” in oral tales and epic from Bosnia and Herzegovina describes deserted, unknown old cemeteries or certain tomb stones, mainly stone ones, for which people do not remember the time of their erection nor the deceased which were buried there. The oral tales about ’’wedding party cemeteries” tell that those are graves of Wedding party participants who met there a long time ago, and according to the old custom, fought with each other and lost their lives. In reality, in most cases these are medieval necropolis from 14th - 15th century, or some small Muslim village cemeteries from different periods of the Ottoman Empire. ’’Wedding party cemeteries” and oral tales about them can be found in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as other territories in Montenegro, Kosovo, Macedonia and some parts of Croatia.

"Viri fideles". Methodological Aspects of a Medieval Personal Network

(Pseudo-)Basilian Rules for Monks in Late Medieval Bulgaria. A Few Remarks on a Bulgarian Nomocanon from the End of the 14th Century

Author(s): Jan Mikołaj Wolski / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2012

The object of research is a manuscript № 1160, stored in the Church-Historical and Archival Institute in Sofia. Written at the end of the 14th century, it contains texts by ecclesiastical and secular law and didactic stories, among them works of (Pseudo-) Basil of Caesarea: excerpts from letters to Amphilochius, penances from Epitimias in monachos deliquentes and Epitimias in canonicas, and others, a fragment of the Constitutiones asceticae and two short parenetic texts for monks. Some of the texts signed with the name of Cappadocia saint still have no original Greek or Slavic parallels. The legacy of (pseudo) Basil of Caesarea in medieval Bulgaria requires further research.

100 godina Franjevačke teologije u Sarajevu 1909.-2009.

Author(s): / Language(s): Bosnian,Croatian / Publication Year: 2012

Franjevačka teologija je u povodu stotinu godina svoga postojanja i djelovanja u Sarajevu (1909-2009) organizirala znanstveni skup i proslavu pod naslovom 100 godina Franjevačke teologije u Sarajevu: 1909.-2009. Tom vizijom i njezinim prakticiranjem u svom životu Franjo Asiški je ponudio alternativu svijetu mržnje i nasilja, u kojem i danas živimo.

500-letnia rocznica unii horodelskiej 1413 roku. Między kulturą polityczną a pamięcią historyczną

Author(s): Jūratė Kiaupienė / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 2/2014

The authoress of the present article has embarked on the task of presenting the different views with regard to the Union of Horodlo of 1413, as presented in the Polish and Lithuanian press articles on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of this union. Moreover she has tried to find an answer to a few fundamental questions concerning the formation of the historical memory of the Poles and Lithuanians at the threshold of the restoration of their statehood. The questions concern, among others, the reasons for the differences in the evaluation of the Union of Horodlo between the Poles and Lithuanians, the moment when the memory of the Union began to take on a different shape and the links between historical memory and political culture. On the basis of examples derived from the Polish and Lithuanian press of 1913, the authoress proves that despite the many years of the Polish-Lithuanian union, a real rapprochement between the two states and societies did not take place, neither in the 15th century, not later, until the very end of the existence of the Commonwealth of Both Nations. The Polish interpretation of the union which was negotiated in Horodło in 1413 was unacceptable to a modern Lithuanian nation. Both sides, that is the representatives of the Polish and the Lithuanian nations had used the celebrations associated with the 500th anniversary of the Union of Horodło to formulate and propagate their most important goal – that is to restore their statehood and in order to achieve this goal, they were ready to subordinate their historical memory. But it is important not to forget that we are dealing with a specific kind of historical memory which is targeted and focused above all on the future.

568 – A HISTORICAL DATE AND ITS ARCHAEOLOGICAL CONSEQUENCES

Author(s): István Koncz / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2015

Written sources reveal that a political power shift and an excessive change of population took place in Pannonia in 568. Archaeological data suggest, however, coexsistence between communities different origins despite the community level realignment of society. The author would like to highlight some neglected examples that could provide details of vital importance for the topic and connect it to well known sites, all too often having complex and unclear interpretations. Continuity is analysed through the last phase of Langobard Period cemeteries, presuming that they were still in use during the last third of the 6th century, and through the early phase of Avar Period cemeteries, as their connection networks are the same: an intensive interaction with the western Merovingian and the Mediterranean world. This connection is evident in certain arte fact types (belts, weapons, brooches) and in attireas a whole as well.

A "LIMOGES" MOUNT IN EASTERN CROATIA?

Author(s): Anita Rapan Papesa / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2015

Archaeologists are often surprised by things that come to light out of the earth, showing us that people in the past lived a life that was much more intense than we could ever imagine. Unusual finds that step out of frames limited by our imagination often make us search more and dig deeper. Such a find was recently donated to the Vinkovci Municipal Museum (Eastern Croatia). On an unexplored field in the village of Karadžićevo little less than 200 medieval coins and an anthropomorphic mount were found by a local metal detector operator. Coins were easily identified as nominals of the Hungarian kingdom, dated to early 15th century. After examining the mount most similar objects to our item are described as products of medieval manufactures in Limoges, France. During High Middle Ages workshops there produced, in the service of the church, numerous religious objects. What such an object, of prestige for this part of Europe, is doing in Croatia and whether it is a Limoges Mount will be discussed in this paper.

A 15th CENTURY DEPOSIT OF OTTOMAN COINS DISCOVERED IN CRIMEA

Author(s): Vitaliy Romankevich,Dmitriy Yanov / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2019

The article deals with a deposit discovered in late 2012 in the foothills of the Crimean Mountains by a private person. The deposit contains 44 Ottoman silver coins (akches). 1 akche was minted in the last year of Murad II’s first reign (1444), while the others – during Mehmed II’s second reign (1451– 1481). These coins are dated AH 855 (5 pcs.) and 865 (38 pcs.) and were issued during 1451–1460 and 1460–1470 respectively. The majority of coins from the deposit were minted at Rumelian mints – Edirne, Novar and Serez (84.09%), while the share of Anatolian mints – Amasya, Ayasluk and Bursa, is substantially lower (13.64%), since most of the Ottoman silver mines of that time were located in Rumelia. A proportion of mints among the AH 865 akches, which are the youngest coins in the composition of the deposit under consideration, and its comparison with the similar hoards from the Romanian lands (Schinetea, Piua Petrii) allowed to assume that its lost or concealment was in the second half of the 1460s – early 1470s. During this period an influx of Ottoman coins to Crimea, as well as an activity of Ottoman merchants in this region has probably increased as a result of the Ottoman conquest of the largest commercial centers in Southern Black Sea region (Amastris, Sinop and Trebizond) and weakening of Genoese trade. One can not state with confidence that the deposit under consideration might be associated with the Ottoman campaign on the Genoese Gazaria and Principality of Theodoro in 1475, since in its composition the AH 875 akches, issued in 1470–1480, are absent.

A 16th CENTURY “STYRIAN” RIDING SWORD IN THE COLLECTIONS OF THE HISTORY MUSEUM OF MOLDAVIA IN IASI

Author(s): Cătălin Iulian Hriban / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2014

One of the exhibits of Moldavia’s History Museum is an Early Modern/Late Medieval sword that has been until recently known and labeled as “Prince Vasile Lupu’s Sword”. Our investigation demonstrates, by means of typology analysis and analogy, that the item is an ordonance weapon in the category of “riding swords” dated at the end of 16th or the in the beginning of the 17th century, used to equipp the light cavalry or to be worn as side-weapon by travelers. The type of weapon is known as Styrian Sword, as the largest group of preserved items is located in the Styrian Arsenal Museum in Graz, Austria.
