This paper considers the European rules governing the posting of workers in particular in the light of recent legislative initiatives and provides an empirical analysis of posting of workers.

GENERIC REPRESENTATIONS IN CHILDREN’S DRAWINGS

GENERIC REPRESENTATIONS IN CHILDREN’S DRAWINGS

Author(s): Aaro Toomela / Language(s): English / Issue: 4/2006

Keywords: children’s drawings; colouring task; coloured cube drawing; generic representations; stages of drawing development

To investigate drawing development, kindergarten (N = 213; age range 2;0–3;9- and Grade 1 (N = 183; age range 6;11–8;9) children performed Moore’s (1986) colouring task. It was found that young children’s drawings of a cube represent generalizations rather than particular models. An intermediate stage of differentiation between scribbles and representational drawings, closed forms, was identified. It was discovered that very young children often do not co-ordinate outline drawings with colouring. Outline drawing stage was correlated with colour use and co-ordination of colouring. Seven categories of ways how children colour in the single square that was drawn to represent the model cube were discovered.

GEOGRAPHIES, SPATIAL CONCEPTS AND MEDIATING IMAGINATIONS: ON JUSTIFICATION OF TRANSLATION IN EX-CENTRIC HUMAN GEOGRAPHY

GEOGRAPHIES, SPATIAL CONCEPTS AND MEDIATING IMAGINATIONS: ON JUSTIFICATION OF TRANSLATION IN EX-CENTRIC HUMAN GEOGRAPHY

Author(s): Veiko Sepp / Language(s): English / Issue: 4/2006

Keywords: conceptual translation; human spatiality; imagination; geographical practice; Davidson

In this paper I examine the consequences of the idea that geography is situated in social contexts. My aim is to determine the rational conditions of using conceptual resources of the central Anglophone tradition in the geographical studies of peripheral societal worlds. The problem of conceptual translation derives from three different but related assumptions: (1) geographies are social theories within other social practices, (2) geographical tradition is plural and its theories are underdetermined by the world events and objects, (3) geography matters to the practices of geographical conceptualisations. Following Donald Davidson’s theory of truth I argue that geographical translation is justified in case the different geographical communities in the same causal circumstances can openly share the belief in the truth of conceptual sentences concerning their spatial properties. Due to the lack of common external social events and objects in the communication between different societies, the paper suggests to imagine a list of simple spatial abstractions as a tool for creating common causal situation for central and peripheral geographical communities.

THE CHANGES IN ATTITUDES TOWARDS JUSTICE IN ESTONIAN SOCIETY DURING THE PERIOD OF 1991–2005

THE CHANGES IN ATTITUDES TOWARDS JUSTICE IN ESTONIAN SOCIETY DURING THE PERIOD OF 1991–2005

Author(s): Marii Paškov / Language(s): English / Issue: 4/2006

Keywords: egalitarianism; inegalitarianism; transition period; dominant ideology; individual factors; “split-consciousness” thesis

This paper will analyse the changes in attitudes towards justice in Estonian society during the period from 1991 to 2005. The aim of this paper is to examine whether the recent changes in Estonian society have had any impact on people’s value judgements, especially attitudes towards egalitarian and inegalitarian justice principles. The impact of a person’s social position on attitudes towards social justice has been observed in addition to general tendencies. The results of the analyses are contradictory to the assumptions made at first. Although there has been a shift from socialist to market system in Estonian society, the support for inegalitarian principles has decreased and the support for egalitarian principles has increased. There were significant differences between groups in attitudes towards market and egalitarian principles in 1991. In 2005 people with different social positions had various opinions only about egalitarian principles. The most remarkable result of this paper is the fact that the two justice principles were seen as more adversative in 1991, whereas in 2005 people tended to support market and egalitarian principles simultaneously. The results give cause to doubt whether market and egalitarian principles are opposed to each other and whether it is at all necessary or possible to contrast them.
